I really appreciate this video! The socks perfectly explained the bag sizes. I have a GR1 but it’s a bit long for me so was debating the GR2 26L and now I’m sold. Thanks for answering my question about size
Brother, one of the better reviewers out here👍🏼👍🏼. Yes that is a double thumbs up. Clear, quick, logical and usable information. I have a GR2 34l (will check to see if you review it against it’s 26l sibling) and I am looking for a second EDC bag, two bag pair to fill all-bag needs for moving overseas. This definately helps me see the value of the GR2 26l, but makes me question if I should have my 34l since it is less likely to also stand in as an EDC one overseas. Cheers
Glad to hear you liked the video! As the primary difference between the 26l gr2 and the 34l gr2 is height, I'd say that not only is the way it looks a factor but also the way it feels. For me, the larger sized goruck bags aren't as comfortable on my back as the smaller ones, so I tend to stick with the 26l gr2. If you're a taller person, it might be that the 34l gr2 works great. In general, whether or not they're too big for EDC is likely a factor of depth, and in that regard, I prefer a gr1 for edc, though the gr2 works when I really need to haul a lot.
Edit- please ignore as I saw your other video packing out various bags, including the GR1 21. -- Hi Andy, have you done a video packing out a 21L GR1? Would love to see how the load out compares to what you show here? Thanks so much! Scott
This video (comparing these bags using the peak design packing cubes) is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thanks. Do you find the GR1's thinner profile to not be that noticable of a difference wherever you travel?
Hey Andy, nice reviews and really enjoying your videos. Just wondering what you think of doing a comparison between the gr2 26l vs the Evade 1.5 full (or cobra)? They seem like competitors.
For me, I find the A19 Evade bags are my preference for edc since that's when I like things a bit more organized, while the gr2 works better for situations when I'm using a lot of pouches like travel. I actually thought you were asking about the gr1 when I first read the comment.
This was exactly what I was looking for! Out of curiosity, how does the small peak design packing cube fit in the 21L GR1? Is it big enough to fit 2 small packing cubes or only 1?
Hello and thank you for the video comparison! I am trying to decide between these two GR1 and GR2 26L bags, however I have a question for you if I may. Which of these two bags do you feel would be a better size for a personal size item for airplane travel? I believe most airlines seem to have an average personal item size limit of 18x14x8, do you think one of these bags may be a better option than the other?
Awesome comparison video, very useful. Would you say the depth of the GR2 is too much? Their website says it's 7.25 inches, but fully packed out I just can't believe (from seeing videos and pics) that it is only 7.25 inches!
Especially if you pack heavy and really utilize the front compartment, it can start to pull away and feel uncomfortable. I ended up sending mine back because I wanted it for daily carry and it was just too clunky and poorly distributing weight. For travel it should be fine in terms of the depth.
Thank you! So would you purchase the GR2 26L again if you already have a GR1 or be tempted to go up to the 34L? I have a GR126L and don't like that its so packed out I can't access anything during travel (I just use a medium peak design cube and a dopp kitt).
Great review! I would have liked to see the GR1 21L compared to the GR2 26L as they are both the same length (18"). The GR1 26L is too long for my torso (20")...I wish they made a GR1 in 22, 23L but kept it at 18.5-19" long...I guess you can't have everything...Very hard to find a travel backpack in the shorter length (my Tom Bihn Synik 22 and Evergoods CPL 24 V2 are a little tight for 3 to 4-day jaunts...but I'm also a lousy packer.
the only differences between the 21l gr1 and the 26l gr2 is that the gr2 has the extra front area, so just consider the 21l gr1 as the main compartment of the gr2 as shown here.
Curious for your thoughts...I just noticed that on the GR2 26L I bought, the Molle webbing is not lined up exactly on the front and sides. It's making me a little nuts. Is this a defect? Typical?
I haven't worn the bags in situations where the abrasiveness is likely to be tested, but the 500d is definitely smoother. It's also a lighter material, so overall weight should go down. If you have an option to get them at the same price, I might recommend the 500d, but if the 1000d is at a discount, unless you're always wearing nice clothing you worry about damaging, I'd get the less expensive option.
@@AndyModellBackpacks I think all the GR2 26L are already sold out. Don't know if they will have more in stock. Really want to try out the 500D version.
@@AndyModellBackpacks I actually got the chance to purchase a pre-order back in the summer and had been waiting for a long time the 500D gr2 26L. I had a GR1 21l slick version but feel a 500D would be easier to use without feeling too stiff. Ended up finding that it is a 1000D. Have to say it is a little disappointed.
If you’re the sort of person who prefers a 21l gr1 tot he 26l and still wants the gr2 or wants to use a gr2 for edc , I’d say it’s likely worth the cost. Otherwise, I don’t know if it’s that much _better_ than the 34l

This was super useful, thanks for going into detail about actual packing. Using the Peak Design cubes as a reference was especially helpful!
Glad to hear it helped!
I appreciate the properly calibrated sock measurements. And also the video itself, since I'm currently eyeing up a GR Something 26L!
Hopefully this helped you make your decision!
I think the socks are genius and in fact a very scientific measure because its easily comparable.
Searched for a while to find out the differences between the 26L bags, thanks for this!
Glad I could help!
This is AWESOME! Please, compare gr2 34L vs 26L and how the look on your back. Thanks!
I’ll think about it. Thanks for the suggestion

So helpful because I also have the PD cubes. Thanks.
I really like them. Glad to help!
Thanks for a very informative video. Now, instead of GR1 26l, I'm thinking to get the GR2 34l.
The gr2 is great. 34l is great, especially for travel

Hey Andy, nice reviews and really enjoying your videos.
Just wondering what you think of doing a comparison between the gr2 26l vs the Evade 1.5 full (or cobra)?

While they occupy similar spaces, I do think they’re very different bags. I might still do that comparison in the future

Gr1 21l fits perfectly in a Spirit airlines sizer, with maybe a little more room. I think a gr2 26l would likely fit into more than a gr1 26l would.

One small and one medium, or one medium and other stuff
Is that a 500D GR2? Doe is stand straight up by itself when packed or does it fall forward?
It is, depends on the specific weight distribution, but usually mine stands okay
This is a great comparison video! I'd still prefer the slimmer profile, of the GR1, even though it doesn't hold as much.
The GR1 is definitely a more preferable bag from the style sense for sure.
