  • What you think you know about keto and ketones might be wrong. Keto can be great for weight loss, but there’s a better way to do it by focusing on more diverse plant food, protecting your mitochondria through mitochondrial uncoupling, and focusing on fiber.

    Great talk. First a comment on protons. As they are actually Hydrogen ions, it is very likely that they participate in the "uncoupling" by forming water (H2O) which will carry the excess heat away cooling the mitochondria preventing their overheating. BTW I've 45 years as a biomedical engineer. Next I started a "Gundry Diet" 30 months ago. In the 2nd day of the diet my GERD of 39+ years went away and has not returned. Nine months later my sore throat healed. A few months later I no longer had eye "floaters" bothering my vision: usually showed up every few weeks. And finally I believe my left hip is about to completely heal after being ok-ed for a hip replacement since MRI and Xrays had shown no cartilage in the hip socket or head of femur 5 years ago. Thank you Dr. Gundry!

    It is really frustrating trying to discover the truth in nutrition "science". It seems like every doctor cherry picks and formulates their hypotheses to fit their biases. When I heard of his background at Loma Linda, I immediately knew it was going to be a vegetarian leaning pitch. You can just as easily find an authority you like that pitches carnivore.

    • @thereligionofrationality8257
      @thereligionofrationality8257 2 роки тому +14

      Although, from an evolutionary and physiological perspective, the carnivores seem to be standing on firmer ground.

    • @markveen1373
      @markveen1373 2 роки тому +5

      Why is it frustrating? Nutrition is entirely individual. There is no (truth)perfect diet that will work for everyone. If people had enough body intuition, they would exactly know what to eat. Simple rule is good digestion. After a meal do you feel energized, alert, happy or down? Just experiment and see which foods work for you. Most likely, local whole food that your ancestors would recognize works best for you.
      That being said, all the longevity data points to a mediterranean(polyphenols) diet being superior. Carnivore is mostly a elemination diet for people that are obese, sick(autoimmune, leaky gut) or have microbiome issues. Unfortunately, alot of plant foods in the US are poisoned with pesticides, insecticides and herbicides. Roundup(glyphosate) is a big mistake. Bio organic is the way.

      You won't find a pure meat and chicken pork beef fat diet that works to burn fat and stop cravings and stop inflammation. You still need the minerals directly found in underground vegetables as Dr Gundry has mentioned the purple sweet potato. Perhaps you can have a beef soup with green onion and carrot and stop the craving for sugars and salts. Also he supports the mediterranean diet where people eat salty foods like sardines and green olives in vinegar. They get polyphenols from unblended olive oils.

      @@markveen1373 Some individuals do not know how to research, and rely on anecdotes offered by these people with no citations or empirical evidence. Omega 6 is a signaling molecule but doesn't make energy. A ketone can make energy and is basically a hybrid of a carb. and fat.
    I believe the liver is good at making and getting ketones into the blood and the individual cell needs to upgrade to use ketones better over time.
    The body makes sugar and the muscles store enough for a rough situation. My brain loves ketones and so does my body. I also believe ketosis should be cycled by weeks or months on and off.
    Loved the talk!

    I just dont get the statement at 21:45 that if you're in ketosis 24/7 your body thinks you must be starving to death. The presence of ketones indicates your dominant fuel source, nothing more. The presence of ketones does not imply calorie deficit. What IS he talking about?? 'Protect the mitochondria by taking the muscles out'?

    Dr. Gundry. The point is less with keto about weight loss than bringing down insulin spikes. Nobody on Keto is consuming twice the number of calories a day. You set up a little straw man there so you could knock it down. No, you consume 1600 to 1800 calories for a woman and the point of the high fat is to control hunger. Fasting in the keto world is not consuming carbs or protein so you begin the day with some MCT oil. Ketones keep you from feeling hungry so you can master yourself. Carbohydrates causes glucose and insulin spikes and soon after you are starving again. That hamburger will only last you a few hours til your insulin stores as much of that glucose as fat as it can and then your blood glucose drops and you are hungry again.

    Right the adaptations to starvation can't be a mode that's long term beneficial, whether we artificially induce it via keto or not.
    28:30 birds live long compared to their metabolic rate. So the parrots live longest. They eat fruit for calories. Fruit is the food lowest in iron. Why don't other frugivore birds live as long as the parrots? They are smaller. With increasing diameter of intestines, ratio of volume of bacteria relative to intestinal area increases, so gut bacteria grab a bigger slice of available iron, further slowing iron accumulation of the bird.
    Less iron longer life.
    35:31 polyphenols chelate metals (including iron) and that is probably another main reason why plants have polyphenols, especially since top soil contains 1-5% iron.
    Regarding uncoupling mitochondria I'm not buying this yet. The highly cited 2000 paper
    'Uncoupling to survive? The role of mitochondrial inefficiency in ageing'
    concludes saying there is yet no direct evidence that it decreases ROS or increases lifespan.
    I have seen nothing in more recent studies since that would reaffirm the initial beliefs that it lowers ROS or manages lifespan.
    Here we go: '...suggesting that uncoupling is a mitochondrial protective mechanism against acute iron overload'. From
    'Uncoupling and oxidative stress in liver mitochondria isolated from rats with acute iron overload', 2009
    37:08 actually what changes at higher altitudes is there is more iron in soil (hence more polyphenols imo): '...We found that total iron content significantly decreases (R2=0.966) at lower altitudes.'
    From
    Differences in total iron content at various altitudes of Amazonian Andes soil in Ecuador, 2020

    The research on biomicrome is not definitive yet. We really don't know what our microbiome should be and the fact there are healthy vegans and carnivores tells me that our microbiome is just based on what we eat, and healthy gut bacteria is what prefers nonprocessed foodds.
