I love it what he said I'd like to be left alone, have more kids and write more songs. I lost it when he said that. This is a great version live he sang this live when I saw him a few years it was great, I wish he would sing the Carny live but he never does.
"What would you like to aspect in the next ten years and how would you like it to be?" "I'd like to be, ehm... left alone, have more kids, mmm and write more songs..." Awesome.
I really hated the traffic in the background!- it really spoils my fantasy about Nick playing this on top of the world or smthn... but on the other hand, it shows just how great the contrast is between art and the places it can take you, and an everyday crowds with all their phobic traffic jams! Love you Nick!
Her name is Hikaru Nishida. She was a singer in Japan years ago a few Japanese people may know of her. Not that famous. I would say that the comments went largely over her head, while she was trying to translate, but may have started to register toward the end. Leave alone is 'hotte oite' , it always comes across badly, regardless of the context it is put.
Good eye, it's definitely Warren Ellis on violin. He didn't join the band officially until Boatman's Call ('97) but guested from '94 on. Cave played this song for awhile, though, so not that surprising that there's a version with Ellis on it.
Great version, however, there was an even better version (in my opinion) from the 'Primo Maggio' concert in Italy, recorded from Rai Tre, here on UA-cam, and I can't find it any longer! It's a real pity as it was an awesome version. Anyone knows if it's still available, thanks!
I love this video so much. Great version of a great song. But every time I see it I convince myself that Melissa Auf Der Maur is on bass. Can anybody confirm or deny this for me and end my stupid pointless conjecture for me?
Nicks such a ledge, its a point tho hes only there to sing, not to have a cosy chat. I love how unfriendly and unapproachable he is :) it wud be rubbish if he was all nice.
What she said in japanese? ..maybe Nick is big in size and music. I believe her questions were kinda stupid maybe she was nervous but nick managed to make her feel more confortable, planning to play a song about Death Row.
Nick Cave's never been one to suffer fools gladly but on this occasion he can be forgiven as this was filmed shortly after his breakup with PJ Harvey. When viewed in that context the interviewers enquiry into Nick's "personal life" no longer seems quite so innocent nor Nick's request to be "left alone" arrogant. Also explains Nick's unusually sombre, almost sorrowful rendition of Mercy Seat.
I don't agree. There was a marked period of time before splitting up with her and meeting Suzy Bick. And then another period of time after they married and before the twins were born. Check your facts.
@@juliettewilliams4298 Nick had children before meeting Susie Bick. Check your facts. This is 1999, his twins with Susie were born in 2000, so he is referring to his first 2 sons who were both born in 1991 to different mothers. Nothing to do with PJ here though that was just a brief fling in the mid '90s, "when viewed in that context" the original comment here is just nonsense and nothing but a figment of the guy's imagination, apart from the not suffering fools bit obviously. Nick doesn't need to "be forgiven" for his answers in any case.
I'm not sure if he ment they to fuck off by "to be left alone" or if he just ment it in general. I think he seems hungover or jetlagged and was just surprised and taken off guard by the fact that the person was talking in english and asking him questions, but he could have just been in a bad mood. either way, nick rocks
"how's the last ten years been?" lol... "yeah, ok...." such bollocks they have the put up with! Japanese presenters have a particular knack for trivializing everything..
i think he is ironic/ sarcastic :))) i had a few kids and wrote a few songs :))) funny and for the future i want to have more kids and more songs :)))))))
"I like to be left alone".
Badass.
I've had a couple of children & written a few songs. Gold.
The best version of The Mercy Seat I've ever heard, I come back to it a lot. I wish I could find a better version of this video!
I love it what he said I'd like to be left alone, have more kids and write more songs. I lost it when he said that. This is a great version live he sang this live when I saw him a few years it was great, I wish he would sing the Carny live but he never does.
The best interview I've ever seen by a recording artist
That is the single funniest thing I've ever seen on youtube - and a damn good version of the song to boot. Thanks for posting!
awesome song so powerful and deep with emotion.. what else can you ask for
Nick Cave is an interview God!
"Well I would like to have some more kids, write some more songs..."
But beyond the sarcasm, very good clip!
just in the beginning.. still the best version i've heard of this song
I have never seen this before and I knew he was going to say, I would like to be left alone.
Great Version. Nick Cave is truly a first rate artist and poet.
I love the way he checks her out while she translates his replies.
Haha, his responses are fantastic!

There is one good interview with him, when Roy & H.G. had their talk show. This version is amazing, so resigned and desperate.

literally a stoic performance
Oh, man. Oh man, oh man, oh man. I have no words.
These are easily the most efficient responses i've ever heard.
a very efficient interview dodge.
he is just awesome

Yes! she is! I totally forgot about N.C. When she spoke! I am moving to japan!
LOL Excellent performance... Now I would like to be left alone...
GOOD................................
i thought his answers were solid gold....i wouldn't expect anything less
this is a wicked version of the mercy seat
This is a wonderful performance with the absurdest intro I have ever seen.
nice version
too cool for school :P
Nice version
Nick did well to sum up over 20 years and then the next 10 to come.. sheesh .. don;t think i would sum my life up that well and succinctly lol
NIKKU CAVE.
Melissa has different hair.. I love Nick Cave!
The Birthday Party too!!
這是西田光的經典傳譯訪問之一.
她說話速度很快,對於略懂英語的我,很難捉到意思!
我很慚愧....
@rhenfield LOL yes he looks intensely annoyed. He does not hide it well.

Her collar is epic.
The mans a genius
Would they have expected who they would be interviewing :D
I would imagine what he was most irritated at is the fact that the audience wasn't going to understand a single word sung.
The girl is a beautiful counterpoint for Nick! How musical their interaction! Did they go on to do more duets???
На фоне смешной ведущей Ник выглядит особо зловеще :) Хорошее исполнение . Собственно как всегда
'a couple of children, written a couple of songs' lol
nice version.
hah, his answers are priceless
the slow version is cool

Is taht Warren Ellis on violin? What year did Warren start playing with Cave? I thought he joined on The Boatmans Call
Yes this is 1999 but he had known Warren for years before inviting him to join the band officially anyway.
Nick just looks at her and thinks:
"Where the fuck did she came from??"
"I tought I was in london, god dammit"
XD
she is very beautiful
@lvpdesign No, What's on Bass.
dang
What she said in japanese? ..maybe Nick is big in size and music.
I believe her questions were kinda stupid maybe she was nervous but nick managed to make her feel more confortable, planning to play a song about Death Row.
i lold
Lost in translation, anyone ? xD :P
Chazz Durden Haha, thought the same! 🙂
NIKKU KEIBU

caruchaaaaaaaaaaaaan
Gawd damn Warren Ellis was there for that?
Is that Melissa Auf Der Maur on bass?
Nick Cave, Australia's Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen.
Why was she pressing her mike on his face, he had one of his own!And these questions, such a cliqué...
start at 1.50

@barrybrien82
Apologies about the terrible grammar,
sorry westost, but Cash covers Cave...
Very nice, Anybody knows what year this could be?
1998
1999 June 1
what year is this?
He's the exact oposite of Bono. That's why.
she obviously did not deserve to be the one standing there, listening to this amazing performance
@savvy428 Well, the questions were banal and stupid and insincere.
若いー
What's wrong w/Bono??
i think he is ironic/ sarcastic :)))
i had a few kids and wrote a few songs :))) funny and for the future i want to have more kids and more songs :)))))))
Who's on Bass?
is it just me or did nick look like he wanted to slap her right at the start of the interview?
Lulz, is he making chinese eyes when he's asked those questions?
Lulz, no. He looks like he just woke up.
stay away from sharp objects, when listening to this song.
what a brilliant performance. nick cave is one my very favorite. but, who the fuck is that berlinerin1234567 girl, a super woman?:)
nah all about the song champ
i think he was just sleepy...
He does look like he's just woken up lol
and im not afraid to die... :) yeah i bet. did i get it right, finally he is guilty in the song and pretending his innocence was a complete lie?
A beautiful song...much better than the noisy bullshit arty version he originally cut..
How many fucked comments can there be on one video? The "noisy bullshit arty version" !!!!!!!!!!!
you are dead right my friend... you are dead right
We all know good ole' Nick had her bent over the piano once the camera's had stopped rolling! :P
Get a grip
I'm a fan of Nick Cave but I must say that this cover version....not so much.
Cover version? Nick wrote the song!
What year this is??
1999
