38:17 the university scenes are filmed at two separate schools. Some scenes were filmed at SAIT (as well as a hallway scene for the cold opening in episode 2) and others were filmed at MRU
Agreed, a limited prequel series would be good and would give them a little more time to breathe before the second season. And additional time with Joel before an Ellie-focused S2 would offset some of the quick pacing of this season.
I was gonna say, I’d like season two to include some possible crazy unwritten stories that occurred with Joel, Ellie, Tommy, and Jessie patrolling the outside areas and other Jackson stuff before shit hits the fan.
Another Easter egg is that the dog Buckley is the same one in the beginning of part II Ellie pets calling him "old timer." I believe that sniffer dog is the one playing him.
For real! Just finished ep 6 and came here to see wth went on with this episode bc it was so damn good. Was so shocked to see a vid like this was already out loll
The show has been absolutely amazing. Its doing a great job at mimicking great moments/narratives from the games while also diverting into incredibly interesting story beats. One very very small detail I wish they had kept in was Sarah's picture. Having the moment where Ellie passes it to Joel but he is now much more ready to accept an emotional connection is a very poignant moment in the games I wish they had kept.
I’m so obsessed with this show now. I really love the character development. Joel (Pedro) has definitely shined and became more open. I can’t wait to see what else they go through.
yea felt that too, maybe they coulda made them leaving town the end of the episode? its tough cause they followed so close that they seem like running out of time for the season
Did anyone else notice how 11 people riding 11 respective horses showed up to interrogate Joel and Ellie, and then when they took Joel and Ellie back to the town to meet Tommy, there were still 11 horses that returned to the town, but Joel and Ellie had become 2 of the 11 riders? So 11 citizens of the town left and found Joel and Ellie, but only 9 of the citizens returned with Joel and Ellie. Did two of them just give up their horses for Joel and Ellie and stay behind for some reason?
I don't think what's going on with Joel is any mystery, or hinting at some unknown health condition we have yet to find out about. I think it's pretty obvious that he's suffering panic attacks and developing an anxiety disorder. Even Joel, without using the words "panic attack" or "anxiety" spells it out when he describes it to his brother Tommy. He describes it as "these moments where the fear comes up outta nowhere and my heart feels like it's stopped." He may not have the knowledge to call it a panic attack (he also had no idea where Jakarta was in episode 1, so not the most book-learned man), but he did correctly identify his panic attacks as fear. He also describes his fear to his brother as something that has caused him to freeze in moments where the fear of impending loss got the best of him and he couldn't take action. And then his nightmares. I think as he gets more attached to Ellie, it's forcing him to face the pain that comes with the loss he's suffered in his life, because parts of him that he closed off for years in order to shield himself from his loss are now opening back up. He's returning to his humanity piece by piece, but along with that is coming the grief and pain that he may have never properly dealt with. So now he has an anxiety disorder because his attachment to Ellie is reminding him of his former role as father to Sarah, and thus triggering his PTSD. He's afraid because he now has something else to potentially lose again.

She was, to her surprise, hired on the spot. Insisted her role include authentic Native representation.
Great episode. Wish the school was fleshed out a bit more. Felt a bit rushed with Joel just getting a random stab wound. Either way its a show and they are absolutely nailing this adaptation.
Man what a great one, another 10/10 tbh, loved the changes, loved the things they kept the same. Joel having PTSD for loosing Sarah and now being scared af of losing Ellie, man that convo with Tommy made me emotional. The "you have no idea what loss is" dialogue was executed to PERFECTION, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are fucking killing it, they did exactly the same. Oh yeah, THE TOWN FROM TLOU 2?! HELLO, YES! (Shoutout to Dina also) They way the episode ended... man, had me crying even tho I know what's gonna happen. Pedro Pascal was the MVP this one, such a great episode, not one miss!
One thing to consider with the lack of infected is that they've gone for classic Special Effects Makeup and expensive special effects suits over heavy CGI. Those suits and makeup style take quite a lot of time and resources to execute on shoot days, and may not have worked with the initial budget for the show (since they didn't know if it would be as big of a hit as it is). I believe the bloater suit was almost 500,000 to make and took nearly 8 hours to apply to the actor. Just my theory.
I think Joel had to rethink twice after the argument with Ellie. He didn’t want to lose Ellie but him losing another person would kill him and letting Ellie go wouldn’t make anything easier for him. He couldn’t be there for Sarah. So to make that up by accepting his faith he had to be there for Ellie another chance he doesn’t want to fail. You could tell the bond is growing slowly at the end
Great analysis! One thing to add is that he’s def dealing with panic attacks rather than heart problems. Joel basically says as much during the “ask tommy to take ellie” conversation, the part where he’s talking abt his shitty mental health
I, like a lot of people was a little butt hurt over part 2. But it’s grown on me in a major way. And I think with a lot of other people. Similar to a movie that people love years later, like a cult classic. The little Dina nod and passive intro to her was admittedly super freaking cool
@@spicypizza6116 same if you remember for part two when your on patrol with Dina she talks about how when she first saw Ellie she was gorging herself with food
The actress who plays Maria also starred in True Blood. They did her so dirty in that show when they killed her off screen.. there was drama on set and the directors treated her like shit.
I really hope not. I liked that Abby was this stranger who just showed up out of nowhere. Because Joel moved on and never thought about the people he killed and wether or not they had people who loved them. I mean did anyone expect the daughter of the surgeon to come after his ass kill bill style. It’s a little bad ass in my opinion. The location for the some of the university of Colorado was shot at SAIT polytechnic in Calgary. There are nets to the left of Joel and Ellie in the first shot, and they are soccer nets from the field at sait. The field is built on top of their parking garage and won awards for its design. Just a fun little fact
I was scared it would not happen in this episode when I saw them reach the university with barely 10 min left to the episode. Then they walked outside. I knew he would not fall but I realized right away it was a stab wound instead when Ellie reacted when Joel turned around. It did feel rushed. They should have added an extra 10 min to the episode and do the fall scene. That little wooden stick didn't look like it could have done that much damage. Pulling it out is also stupid since now Joel is bleeding. With the metal bar they had to pull him out.
The fall scene shows Joel take too much damage I think. At 5:09 the metal bar penetrating his spine and out of his stomach. Not to mention galloping on horseback, that's death right there.
@@neddeon7036 in real life the rebar is 100% death, while it didn’t puncture his spine, it did puncture atleast some blood vessels and most likely a kidney. On top of punctured and damaged organs, you also have to deal with the possible risk of infection from bacteria on the rebar, as well as the risk of bleeding out from pulling it out of you. The knife scene was very much rushed in my opinion, but it was far more realistic.
Imo he should of been shot and at-least fell off of some sort of height. Just to have a similar scenario with more believable variables to his injury. Like he’s wrestling over a gun with one of the raiders and they fall, the raider grabs the gun, shoots him somewhere survivable and it’s only one in the chamber so Ellie ends up shooting him from where they fell and it plays out similarly.
Seems like they're only including Infected encounters when it's relevant to the story. They were in the museum because that's where Tess gets bit; they were in the sniper town because that's where Sam gets bit; and they'll probably be (SPOILER) in the next episode in the mall because that's where Riley and Ellie get bit
This is an amazing in depth dive, but someone needs to put the UA-cam CC in check. It's very wrong and at one point theres a reference to Nazis that isn't in the actual dialogue. I only know this because my wife doesn't hear very well and we have to use the CC. It could deter people who can't hear at all.
That shot of them on the horse going away from the camera was beautiful! Can’t remember the last show where it just keeps getting better! We will see the map interrogation again just r-rated version. Also tommy being a father will be the catalyst for season 2. The WLF with Abby will attack Jackson because of the St Mary’s massacre and lay it to waste killing Tommy’s kid. This will set him off to Seattle for revenge where Joel and Ellie will follow to “save” him and help.

Maybe I missed this, but does anyone know when they first bring Joel and Ellie into Jackson, how do they have their own horses to ride on? Did any of the other people double up on horses or did they bring spare horses (which seems unlikely)?
When they are surrounded and interrogated, there was 11 people on 11 horses. When we see them reaching Jackson they were still 11 people on 11 horses including Joel and Ellie so most likely 2 of Jackson's group probably stayed behind.
I asked this too! No one that came back into the fort was doubled up, and I don’t think there were extra horses when they first found Ellie and Joel, so two of them must be coming back on foot. Which is pretty generous to do for two people they just met!

Beautiful shot after Beautiful shot!
I loved this episode. Pedro really sold himself as Joel to me. That scene where he talks to Tommy about his failures as a leader and protector almost brought me to tears.
The only thing was missing from this episode is when Tommy gave Joel Sarah's picture of them together
First thing i do after finishing an episode is refreshing and refreshing your channel to watch your breakdown video
Ey hope you enjoy it
Me to.
Yea same. It’s impressive how fast he is with this stuff
Same lol
Kept refreshing when the episode ended cause I needed this breakdown! While I don't watch the "super spoiler section" I love to hear you say it!
Joel's not having "health problems" really, more like panic attacks
Panic Attacks are very much a health problem ijs.
It's just farts, he can't fart enough because he has to pretend he's all tough in front of Ellie
That's a health problem lmao
Or PTSD. I’ve read that if you get PTSD from farts it’s terrible!
he does explain himself about hearing loss and getting slower due to old age. so he is having health problems
Jackson looks just as Cozy as the games. Tommy having a concerned look that Jackson is literally communist cracked me up😂.
Love it because you can tell that tommy never thought about the fact that he's a communist now.
I'm more surprised Pedro was okay with playing a character thats against communism lol
"Oh shit, I'm a commie, now!?" ~ Thomas Miller
As a new parent I have noticed a lot of TV shows and movies add on kids/losing kids as an accessory for the adult characters and they don't do it very well. But this show is really capturing it so well and just how much you're impactied
38:17 the university scenes are filmed at two separate schools. Some scenes were filmed at SAIT (as well as a hallway scene for the cold opening in episode 2) and others were filmed at MRU
What do those acronyms stand for? I get multiple results in google.
@@Elbert_Heather SAIT is Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. MRU is Mount Royal University.
Bella ,and Pedro need to win a Emmy for this episode alone.
Such a small detail ,but I love the shot when they find the packing list at the university. I wanted to press Square to read it.
This episode was so freaking good, I keep saying recent episodes are my favorite but as soon as a new episode drops my mind changes 😭
This show needs a prequel of Joel surviving those 20 years leading up to season 1 epsiode 1 this show is just to good
Agreed, a limited prequel series would be good and would give them a little more time to breathe before the second season. And additional time with Joel before an Ellie-focused S2 would offset some of the quick pacing of this season.
Kind of like the Wire Season 2! They focused on a different kind of fading industry.
@@joshjones6009 this is a great idea and would allow Bella to age a bit more which would be relevant for the coming story
I was gonna say, I’d like season two to include some possible crazy unwritten stories that occurred with Joel, Ellie, Tommy, and Jessie patrolling the outside areas and other Jackson stuff before shit hits the fan.
@@Elbert_Heather The coming story? Hmmm fill me in
Another Easter egg is that the dog Buckley is the same one in the beginning of part II Ellie pets calling him "old timer." I believe that sniffer dog is the one playing him.
I love it when Kevin does the super spoiler section section and theory time voice 😂
The emotion in Joel’s voice when he called Tommy’s name.
how the hell do you get these out so quickly?? very impressive
was asking myself the same thing

This was a great episode! Thanks for the breakdown!
Loved it!!!!!!! Can't wait for the next chapter!!!
I’m so obsessed with this show now. I really love the character development. Joel (Pedro) has definitely shined and became more open. I can’t wait to see what else they go through.
Ironically or even poetically enough, Elle ends up at a Ranch in the 'Part 2'. Incredible foreshadowing!
The pacing felt really rushed with the university of Colorado
yea felt that too, maybe they coulda made them leaving town the end of the episode? its tough cause they followed so close that they seem like running out of time for the season
@@toddsalisbury3851I just think the season needed 1-2 more episodes. Cause it does feel slightly rushed. But I am really enjoying it
A lot of that section was fighting and finding the way around things so i see why it was cut down so much
That voice crack from bella Is awesome! Shes getting better and better
Only 3 episodes left no!!!!!!

Great episode. Wish the school was fleshed out a bit more. Felt a bit rushed with Joel just getting a random stab wound. Either way its a show and they are absolutely nailing this adaptation.
Dina... Shimmer... so much emotions! Great episode.
Only the Giraffes missing :D

There was a giraffe poster in the room they had the "everyone except you" scene in.

Another amazing episode. I loved the old couple in the beginning of the show. Joel breaking down was so sad.
HELLO, YES! (Shoutout to Dina also)
They way the episode ended... man, had me crying even tho I know what's gonna happen. Pedro Pascal was the MVP this one, such a great episode, not one miss!
I don't know why people hate The Last Of Us without even seeing it
One thing to consider with the lack of infected is that they've gone for classic Special Effects Makeup and expensive special effects suits over heavy CGI.
The 2 old couple we saw in the cabin the guy was the chief in the movie Dances With Wolves. Highly recommend the movie
Also in Wind River. Another great movie
@@DPBida he also voiced Rains Fall in RDR2
Graham Greene, also played Arlen Bitterbuck in the green Mile
Perfect time for Joels injury as the next episode is Left Behind, which is Ellies back story.
*Tera from Trueblood made my day!*
A small moment that made me sad and happy is when Tommy introduced shimmer to Ellie how many people else noticed that fine detail
They are mixing up things from part 1 and 2 !! It's awesome in some way but ....
Great analysis! One thing to add is that he’s def dealing with panic attacks rather than heart problems. Joel basically says as much during the “ask tommy to take ellie” conversation, the part where he’s talking abt his shitty mental health
The Dina Easter egg had me smiling from ear to ear.
I, like a lot of people was a little butt hurt over part 2. But it’s grown on me in a major way. And I think with a lot of other people. Similar to a movie that people love years later, like a cult classic. The little Dina nod and passive intro to her was admittedly super freaking cool
I knew it was Dina immediately. I was watching for her the moment they walked into town. I believe she’s at the movie too.
@@spicypizza6116 same if you remember for part two when your on patrol with Dina she talks about how when she first saw Ellie she was gorging herself with food
@@rayguym33 oh shit really? I totally forgot she said that, that's definitely an easter egg for her
At this point they could have shown abby in the finale lol
The actress who plays Maria also starred in True Blood. They did her so dirty in that show when they killed her off screen.. there was drama on set and the directors treated her like shit.
Really hoping for Abby to make a cameo appearance in the last episode
Me too
hope not
I don’t envy the girl who has to play her, considering how it all played out with Laura Bailey..
If they show Abby it’s just gonna be like okay yeah well now we know who she is and what she’s gonna do
@@lisak8492 it’s so annoying how women are treated for the characters they play. Like Anna gunn for example who played skylar in breaking bad. People would send her hate and death threats for playing a wife taht didn’t want to be involved with her drug dealer husband lol
Shimmer was the horse from part 2. Callous is the horse from part 1.
oh yeah youre right
Awesome video! I agree with so little infected moments.... but the characters and writing is so strong, it doesn't even matter to me. Thanks dude! 😁
The little Hand that slips away when Ellie meets Shimmer for the first time is quite a charming and quirky film-mistake 🤭
The location for the some of the university of Colorado was shot at SAIT polytechnic in Calgary. There are nets to the left of Joel and Ellie in the first shot, and they are soccer nets from the field at sait. The field is built on top of their parking garage and won awards for its design. Just a fun little fact
This show is amazing! Loved the episode!
My only complaint is that Joel's "fall" scene was just so rushed. Otherwise unreal episode
Another phenomenal episode with some amazing character moments. Absolutely loving the show.
What an absolutely Fantastic episode!!
Seems like they're only including Infected encounters when it's relevant to the story. They were in the museum because that's where Tess gets bit; they were in the sniper town because that's where Sam gets bit; and they'll probably be (SPOILER) in the next episode in the mall because that's where Riley and Ellie get bit
did anyone else notice the fake horse at the end of the episode
XD2
XD
Why do you think it was fake?

Marlon's also played by the voice actor for Rains Fall from Red Dead Redemption 2 immediately recognized his voice.
Graham Greene the actor who played the old man is actually also the voice of Chief Rains Fall in Red Dead Redemption 2
He's also from the second twilight movie. He's the one who gets killed by Victoria in New moon.
Ayyy I love the Dina and shimmer cameo🔥
I think Joel had coffee not alcohol because Ellie said "still bad" from when she drank it last time
That shot of them on the horse going away from the camera was beautiful!

Really good dam breakdown, some of the stuff you mentioned were overlooked by me, thanks
