I just noticed that Ellie and Riley held hands when they agreed to wait it out and it’s just like what Ellie did with Joel before she still stitched him up!
I think the main reason they have scaled back the action sequences is the amount of detail/budget they have dedicated to the visuals of the infected. I think they prioritized having really detailed high quality combined practical and digital effects for the infected in smaller doses over being completely faithful to the games but using lower quality effects. It can feel disappointing episode to episode, but it will greatly contribute to how well the show holds up with time. I think they also were concerned with the audience getting "numb" to how terrifying the infected are (like what happens in the Walking Dead) and have held back to increase the impact when they do have a boss fight or hoard on screen.
Honestly except for the Henry and Sam episode fighting hordes or zombies most of the episodes are just character drama with no name actors so it doesn't cost much.
Joel was willing to die to keep Ellie alive. It took 5 days to get there and 5 days to get to Tommy. No way he would survive 10 days alone. 😢 He was willing to die to keep Ellie safe. I'm not ok. 😭 😭 😭 😭. I was soooo glad Ellie chose to stay and fight for him. We needed to see that.

I like this episode because it ties so much into the story from Ellies perspective. Episode 3 was a good story in and of itself, but it added very little to the story. We learned a bit more about the start of the outbreak, that Frank came up with the idea for different decades of music as an alert system, and that's where Ellie and Joel get the truck and some supplies. I think it would have been more effective storytelling to weave the Bill and Frank story into other episodes. It would have made their deaths more impactful and furthered the story more effectively. Story-wise, the music alert system could have been shown with a few lines of dialog and the truck and supplies could be explained easily as well. I thought this episode gave a great insight into Ellies story and loss and tied to the overall story nicely. Definitely don't give up your day job...singing aint your thing. Keep the vids coming, though :)
This episode works where ep3 doesn't because this is a flashback of the main character lol. Bill and Frank was a nice love story but contributed little to the overall story. This story makes perfect sense, especially in context of the last episode where ellie went on about all the people she cared about being left behind (pun intended)
Pearl Jams' "Future Days" came out 10 years after the outbreak, so my money is on "Thumbing My Way" being THE song. It's from the album "Riot Act" the same one as "All Or None" from this episode. It's an acoustic song about someone recalling all of the good times they had with another person, who isn't around anymore. Lines like "No matter how cold the Winter, there's a Spring time ahead" are used almost like a coping mechanism, and fit perfectly into the show.
To be honest, this was the worst episode ever. Almost an hour of a teenage lesbian love drama. Watching them explore a mall. So boring! @@thatgirlinautumn5995 To be honest, this was the best episode ever. Almost an hour of perfectly acted teenage love story. Watching them explore a mall together was sweet and almost innocent. So hopeful! Congratulations to you HBO for giving us an another hour of something different than most/all other zombie like shows. And to make it better, it's a flashback that fleshes out Ellie's hesitance in getting close to anyone and shows us how unpredictable their lives are in that world. Just really good.
Every time Ellie and Riley were on screen together, I was shouting at it "you two are so adorable together! NAOW KIIIIISH MUAH MUAH MUAH" like I was playing with action figures or something 🤣🤣
Very well done. You knew what was coming through the whole flashback scene, but you never know when. Made the whole thing incredibly tense, much like their lives would be at all times in such a world (well… less so, of course, but you know what I mean). One thing that’s funny about this show is how hooked they are on 80s music despite the world going to crap in 2003. The Cure song on the Merry-Go-Round was haunting.
I was hoping the show would answer a question I've had for years. What happened after Riley turned? Did Marlene find them and kill infected Riley? Did ellie have to shoot her best friend? How did that go down?
This was so poignant as an episode. Two teenage girls hanging out in the mall doing dumb stuff, Ellie getting a peak into her feminity (In front of the lingerie shop), realising their burgeoning attraction, having their first fight, Ellie going back to makeup, followed by their awkward first kiss and then losing it all. A night of firsts and losses; the perfect first date and the worst first date ever.
@@ryan80166 yeah I was thinking the same thing like each episode they introduce a character who then dies. They wasted a whole episode on Bill and Frank but it wasn't a bad episode though.
I think overthrowing FEDRA doesn't necessarily lead to violent chaos. Kathleen's brother, Michael, was the original "revolutionary" was ratted out by Henry and killed, which caused her to be thrust into the role of leader, where she became obsessed with violence and revenge. Maybe if Michael had lived and led the revolution they could have created a peaceful society like Jackson.
I just want to say this: side-by-side means in parallel, or split screen, what you did was in serial, one scene, same scene, 2nd scene, 2nd scene, etc.
Riley makes a command sequence to do Milena's bone dry fatality and that fatality is done pressing high kick for 3 seconds and then releasing it when close. She did probably the sequence for the sai slice one.
Also meant to add, the song "Just like Heaven" that plays hauntingly on the merry-go-round is significant on a number of levels because it is about a dream of escape from reality, and spending time with a loved one in heaven (on the beach in the song, but hey). Ultimately, the singer wakes up in the end, as does Elly to her reality (and no more dream-like flashback either), and realizes they are alone in the world.
Knowing the story so closely, I kind of knew this one was going to drag a whole lot of time into telling a small bit of story so definitely my least favorite episode so far but still excellent. Hey Paul, so quick thing the pun book stuff is still correct I think. While controllering ellie in the dlc she does have volume 1 in her back pack that you can actually look at and later on Riley does give her volume too as a gift. Love all the videos!
Don’t understand your comment on “they introduce new characters just to kill them off” formula as the last episode expressly didn’t do that, but that’s where you felt it flagging. And I fail to see how multiple shows with waves of infected would make the show less repetitive. I get that you lose some of the action element, but we’ve had multiple decades and countless hours of zombie action and I’m glad this show is doing something different. Also, I think we need this Ellie moment to contrast with what happens with David in the next episode.
I think 🎵Take on me🎵 would’ve been better suited for Riley and Ellie because the lyrics go, “I’ll be gone in a day or two” Riley tells Ellie that she will be gone in a day to join the fireflies!
Damn you don't waste any time lol I didn't cry this episode but I definitely felt alot of anxiety as soon as that infected showed up. So can we all agree on something? That was a Stalker right? That would explain why the fungus only covered the right side of its face, took a while to attack after being introduced. And jump-scaring around the corner due to it stalking them. Only brining this up because I see a lot of people confused as to why it took a while for the infected to attack. It being a stalker would make sense for all the reasons I said. Fungus on one side, took a while to attack due to it stalking them, and then jump-scaring them out of know where.

Right!!! I was hoping we’d get that moment
yes I wanted to see this too. instead we got 1 hour of teen drama and walking around a mall...
I am hoping we see this next episode or when Ellie gets to the Fireflies 🙏🏼
Yeah, thought they would’ve added that.
Same thing I was thinking, how and when was Riley killed.
Maybe they'll do another flash back later and show how it all went down.
Insane amount of detail for them to have maybe 5 minutes of total screentime so far? I don’t think so.
Pedro needed to get paid, if anything thats why
Honestly except for the Henry and Sam episode fighting hordes or zombies most of the episodes are just character drama with no name actors so it doesn't cost much.
Joel was willing to die to keep Ellie alive. It took 5 days to get there and 5 days to get to Tommy. No way he would survive 10 days alone. 😢 He was willing to die to keep Ellie safe. I'm not ok. 😭 😭 😭 😭. I was soooo glad Ellie chose to stay and fight for him. We needed to see that.
Well obviously, he was bleeding out
Everyone’s talking about the episode but no one mentioned the sick vocals my man displayed at the end there pouring his heart out for us ❤️
Totally... It was like Grammy level singing!! Haha .. I've ditched all the other recap vlogs for this one.
Ellie Fixing her hair and shirt was adorable. That is all, lol
37:41 respect you just did it. I’m pretty sure a whole lot of us were singing just as amazing as you were here 😂
Really enjoy your breakdown and I’m enjoying the series. I do agree with you at times it feels they’re holding back a bit. I love that they are focusing on the characters but leaves me wishing to see more battles with the infected
This was the worst episode ever. Almost an hour of a teenage lesbian love drama. Watching them explore a mall. So boring! Shame on you HBO for slipping in this hour which is like a totally different show. And to make it worse, it's all just a flashback and predictable what happens. Just really bad.
You should quit trying so hard to like the show, and admit that it's absolutely 100% boring.
@@minafrota6124🤡
@@jeremyzarins4714 Except it really isn’t. Some of you are trying to be different for absolutely no reason lol, I promise no one cares that they’re lesbian cause that the REAL issue most of you have.
too much character development, feels like a book but very drawn out.. kind of boring to be honest. theyre trying too hard to get an emmy lol
Love it. Everything about it. The episode, the breakdown, the acting. Instant classic episode. Best yet.
Lines like "No matter how cold the Winter, there's a Spring time ahead" are used almost like a coping mechanism, and fit perfectly into the show.
i never knew how much i needed this incredible rendition of Take On Me at the end. thank you for blessing us.
Bro you’re doing these in the middle of the nigth! Thank you for your commitment 🥲
Best "Take on me" cover of all time! 😂
The Halloween store sequence was so beautiful. It evokes the same emotions I felt watching the DLC. This show is just hits, no misses!

@@minafrota Could you at least hijack your _own_ comments? Jesus Christ 🙄
So you're saying it's exactly the same as DLC?
The show has tons of misses.
That rendition is now my new ring tone. Bravo sir, brought a gosh damn tear to my eye and I didn't cry when my grandpa was eaten by a Grizzly!
Keep going with your singing man, I can see a bright future for you 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I cried like a baby… again such a great show love the break down
Every time Ellie and Riley were on screen together, I was shouting at it "you two are so adorable together! NAOW KIIIIISH MUAH MUAH MUAH" like I was playing with action figures or something 🤣🤣
This is friendship we can all relate especially if you lived thru the 80s. The arcade and take on me music are all shopping mall of that era. LoL
@@jonfreeman9682 yeah..."friendship" 😉😂
I look forward to two new episodes every Sunday. The latest Last of Us episode, and the video about it from this channel
Your masterful rendition of take on me is now my ringtone, thank you.
Paul is clutch as usual.
This is the Way
Who tf Is Paul?! 😉
Who leaked all the episodes to Heavy Spoilers so he could publish these breakdowns immediately when the episodes end?
HBO
wow, that rendition of "take on me" just stunning
On the carousel they played an instrumental version of “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure with very appropriate lyrics!
Reminds me of that bumper car scene from adventureland
Strongest finish for a video I have seen in a long time!
Great episode. The only thing that worries me is how they’re going to tie up the rest of the story in two episodes without it feeling rushed.
They won’t. We’ll get a cliffhanger.
Damn only 2 episodes left?
There is no way. It’s gonna be trash because they wasted so much time on boring crap
They've got 10 episodes so they're close to the end. It will be epic.
@@ryan80166 yeah I was thinking the same thing like each episode they introduce a character who then dies. They wasted a whole episode on Bill and Frank but it wasn't a bad episode though.
is this show trying to make me cry every week
The “take on me” song and then the phrase “Can you open that?” Really remind me of Dina!
In episode 3 Ellie tells Joel about Mileena’s fatality and we finally see where she would have even seen it
I think overthrowing FEDRA doesn't necessarily lead to violent chaos.
Great job, Paul.
I love re-visiting these episodes with an eye for Easter eggs/etc… makes me want to watch them again & again.
Am I the only one that noticed that the music that is playing on the merry-go-round is a beautiful rendition of just like heaven fro the Cure?!
Ellie not knowing Marlene is an odd change.
I just want to say this: side-by-side means in parallel, or split screen, what you did was in serial, one scene, same scene, 2nd scene, 2nd scene, etc.
Thanks professor.
I look forward to your breakdowns just as much as the actual show! 👏🏻
Riley makes a command sequence to do Milena's bone dry fatality and that fatality is done pressing high kick for 3 seconds and then releasing it when close. She did probably the sequence for the sai slice one.
good catch yeah she pressed several buttons i was like wth?
Fuuuuuuu...k! That hurt but what a great episode!!!!! It's all getting to the eeeeeend!!
That was the best rendition of Take On Me I've ever heard
I understand why they cut a lot of the parts where Ellie is searching for medical supplies because most of it is just gameplay
Each episode has been consistently amazing, such a phenomenal show
It's an ok show but more drama than zombies
3/10 show
@@jonfreeman9682 That's the point. Plenty of dumb action zombie shows if that's what you want.
Knowing the story so closely, I kind of knew this one was going to drag a whole lot of time into telling a small bit of story so definitely my least favorite episode so far but still excellent. They had to put a pause between the Riley story and running into David. Holy hell does the actor nail the creepiness.
That's interesting cause this became my favorite. The DLC was fine but it dragged and I'm happy they made this more emotional and impactful
@@Mrinsomniac Nahhhh, i’ll take panicking while running from the horde in the mall over watching Bella and Storm’s uncomfortable stretches of eye contact.
@@thetruebatman4632 im not really sure what you mean by uncomfortable since it seemed extremely lovely to me 🤔 i was surprised they didnt include the switching between the current timeline and the past though, I suppose that was because it was more of a pure engaging gameplay element + too long (still think it could work out in the series though, to keep the sense of urgency)
I actually always liked David, also pretty sure Joel’s voice actor is David now
@@thetruebatman4632
Honestly, I was disappointed when they revealed 1 Infected looking for them. They said the Mall was shut down because it was over run by infected, yet they struggled against 1 zombie in the whole entire mall!
I expected at least 3 to feel like it was shut down for a reason!
I dunno how you make/edit this videos so damn fast. Must use a vpn to get early access, but regardless you the real mvp. New rockstars takes 2-3 days and a team to get these out. You get this out within 20 minutes of Americans finishing the show
Hey Paul, so quick thing the pun book stuff is still correct I think.
100% captured exactly what I'm thinking while reading some of these comments.
The closing acapela take on me cover was amazing bruv. Reminded me of the actual song...amazing.
And the final moment with Ellie and Riley was definitely sad but kind of beautiful and hopeful, especially when we know what Ellie's blood can do and seeing her trying to patch up Joel.
Good episode. Rest in peace Riley
the singing at the end is why you are my favorite "spoiler"/ movie review recap channel.
Love coming here after every episode, thank you Paul 💯
I feel like your arguments for why the show was weak are the strongest and most rational ones I've seen. Like... doesn't seem like you have any weird biases. I really appreciate that about you.
I adore the show and kinda disagree (probably mostly because i'm gay so i'm really eating this up), but finally subbed. I really appreciated your take.
Damn speedy over here ❤
Even though I knew it was coming 😢still breaks me. So anxious in every wonder.
23:09 Following the stalker in the wall to the 2 dolls is foreshadowing what that stakes will soon be focusing on (Ellie and Riley).
Beautiful 1:1 rendition at the end there, great video as always! :)
Fun fact, in the American Girl Store, Nanea was the doll that you saw right before the infected guy. The thing is, Nanea was released a whole 14 years after outbreak day! Just a little plot hole
Worst episode ever. Almost an hour of a teenage lesbian love drama. Watching them explore a mall. So boring, I thought I was watching a show about post apocalypse zombies and survival. Shame on you HBO for slipping in this hour which is like a totally different show. And to make it worse, it's all just a flashback and predictable what happens. Just really bad.
@@minafrota6124 it was all character development. Many shows do flashback episodes but I do agree it was kind of filler.
@@minafrota6124 you shall be blocked and reported. Just give up mate.
Listening to "take on me" at the end was completely worth it.
Damn, that was pretty quick pal
This man wastes no time lol
32:02 Imagine the horse taking a masive dump on Joel right there lmao
What do you WANT?! A faithful adaptation, a complete revision, or a mix of both? I personally think if they changed much more than they have then people would be up in arms. If they changed nothing, people would be underwhelmed.
The last two episodes weren’t great for you? I really want more on that. I agree with most of your opinions and reviews but listen man, the last two episodes were great and obviously lead up to a big finale, with the intent of giving context and background to make it hit more. Loved the left behind episode right here, before what’s going to happen.
But yeah, I’m just a knob. Would like to know why you didn’t like these past two episodes specifically. You explained a little but I didn’t get it. Hope you care, love you xoxo
LEAVE BRITTANY ALONE!!!!!
Are you a teenage girl? Looks like it.
Absolute perfect rendition of Take On Me, no notes
So sweet and such amazing work by the young actors 💕
The horse carousel 🎠 was playing The Cure 👏🏽
why do you think marleen was keeping an eye on ellie and just using riley to get closer to her? she didnt know ellie was immune right?
She knew ellie's mom didn't she?
When “the choice” played after they got bit, couldn’t have been a better moment to place it. “Way I see it, we got 2 options” Riley made the choice for both of them
Got damn the episodes get better each time! This one gave you every high and low.
One thing nobody seems to talk about but was pretty remarkable to see was how many commercials there were in this episode.
I mean how much money did hbo received from esprit, bodyshop, footlocker, subway and victory secrets.
I see people complain about hbo not have enough budget but i think just looking at the commercials in this episode it should cover a whole season lol
We appreciate the amount of dedication and effort you've invested on this channel. God bless you.
He's doing the Lord's work.
The singing at the end😂Thanks for a good laugh
Waiting for your videos to come out just like each episode
Skeptical as I was those two young actors killed it
Dont forget the song on the carousel was “just like heaven” by the cure. Very cool
I absolutely burst into tears on this episode. There were too many emotional moments that I could not compose myself. Ellie is one bad ass girl, and all the training that Joel has given her will come into play in the next episode. Joel has to survive this, Ellie needs him, and he needs her. They've cemented a bond that is unbreakable, and I know that he won't let her down. Freaking brilliant show all the way. 👏🏿 🙌🏿
LMFAO I love your rendition of Take on Me.
The moment we see Ellie was bitten really hit hard on the show…I was shook.
