The duck tape we know today was invented by Charles L Adams, or Lee as he liked to be called. I was his nurse before his passing. Great guy, hell of a sense of humor.
HVAC does not typically use or like Duck Tape because it does not last and it hates sunlight. HVAC uses an aluminum foil or Hardcast to join ducts. They sometimes use a black high grade cloth tape for noncritical joints. Your common Duck Tape does not work well in a hot attic, outside or longer than a few years.
@Migglesworth If you watch the video, you would have learned the original name was DUCK TAPE. Why? It was water proof, like a…DUCK. It was not invented for AC ducts. The darn stuff does not like attic heat or UV. I use a black cloth version or a metal tape or a real sticky stuff with metal backing made by Hardcast.
@@paulkurilecz4209 Don’t know about flamibilty of duct tape because I don’t use Duck tape for ducts because it falls apart in the heat, cold, sunlight and just because no one knows. Bad bad product for ducts. The only place I have used the cloth duct tape is to temporary hold a flex duct to a collar before I put the double zip tie straps on. The tape is in compression and adds a cushion and tightens the flex duct down to the collar. Flex duct is plastic and flammable. This duct need last 50 years. Duck, nada duct, duck tape may last a year maybe more.
@@TexasEngineer Next time that you are at the store, look at the UL standards for HVAC duct tape. Not only is there a flammability requirement but a temperature range requirement for the adhesive. Cloth tapes like DuckTape do not meet these requirements. It is why there is a big difference in price. Like you, I prefer to use the aluminum foil tapes.
You just do not go hiking in the mountains without duck/duct tape. Ideal for fixing loose soles on your hiking boots. Don't forget the cable ties as well.
5:25: It's not just duck tape, it's also WD-40. If it sticks together and shouldn't, use WD-40. If it doesn't stick together and should, use duck tape. I also remember hearing that the name "duck tape" came from cotton duck fabric that was applied over an adhesive (rather than being adhesive tape) in its earliest iterations. Can't say for sure, I'm old, but not that old.
J&J recognized Mrs Stoudt as the inventor but she was never compensated. She had a brilliant idea, it changed her working life but didn't enrich her pockets.
(in an appreciative tone) Ah! Including Gaffer's tape in this presentation was marvelous! When it comes to using tape for permanency, I always use gaffer's tape, as it is a lot more durable and lacks the tell-tale gummy residue that duct tape is notorious for. The downside of gaffer's tape is the cost, nowadays with the current brands selling around three times higher than duct tape. Years ago 3M had the # 6910 gaffer's tape. Wonderful stuff; stays intact for years of outdoor exposures (whereas duct tape disintegrates in less than a year outdoors). But, a 50 yard roll would cost over $40 (US). 3M discontinued it, replacing it will a lower price/quality tape.
Worked at a large candy plant and when a belt broke during production we would use a Harvey 4" wide green color tuff duct tape that appeared to be a lot harder to pull apart. After the run would drag out a,$5,000 vocanising machine to redo the splice.
Duck tape, AKA pusser's tape, in the UK "Pusser" is Royal Navy slang for a purser, a ship's supply officer, now called a Logistics Officer. Or Gaffa tape, why? The precise origin of the name is unknown, one hypothesis is that it is named for the gaffer (chief lighting technician) on a film crew. When cables are taped down on a stage or other surface, either to prevent tripping hazards or conceal them from view of the audience or camera, they are said to be gaffed or gaffered. Gaffer tape was invented in 1959 by Ross Lowell, director, cinematographer, and founder of Lowel-Light. Lowell reworked Johnson & Johnson's Permacel duct tape product by combining the Permacel adhesive with a silver fabric backing to create gaffer tape which could hold a flat metal plate to a window. if you can fix it with Gaffa tape, it can't be fixed
When I was about 6 years old, my dad humorously told me that duck tape was used in zoos to tape duck's bills shut, so they wouldn't eat too much and get fat. At the time, I believed him
In 2010 (2009?), my band was one of the acts entertaining at the International Duck Tape Festival in Avon, Ohio. One of the highlights of my wacky professional music career. lol Duck Tape people are a great audience.
In the book "The Martian" which is much more detailed and amusing than the movie, the main character Mark Watney repaired his spacesuit and the HAB outside on Mars in near vacuum with Duct Tape. Though his comment was left out of the film, his quote in the book was, excuse me if I'm not 100% correct. "Duct Tape works Anywhere, it is Magic and should be Worshiped!!"
I learned something in this video that I did not know. I always thought when people called it Duck tape, that they were pronouncing it wrong.but found out that there is a reason why! "THE MORE YOU KNOW" 🌈
Actually, there are two items that looks similar, but they are not. One is duct tape, and it is used to join and seal air ducting. It meets various requirements such as flammability and adhesive temperature limits. Then there is adhesive cloth tape. It looks the same and costs about 1/3 less than duct tape.
I always understood it was also called Duck Tape because the cloth used was called cotton duck, a well known water resistant strong canvas much used for soft luggage. I still refer to the tape as Duck Tape regardless of other explanations or variations - ! 😅
@mbrownie22 funny when Iwas a child 70 years ago, friends of my grandfather told us grandchildren about them being given gum and ducktape when they boarded the airboats during WWI incase the planes were shot up!
duck tape, now called duct tape was first used for hunting ducks, neutra sweet was used for hunint netria in louisiana, and pussywillow was used for ..... well i'll let you figure it out.
Correct, the tape is named after the cloth used to make it, called “duck” or “doek”. The latter is the Dutch word for fabric or tarp, pronounced “dook”, which is where the name comes from.
Yes.. I aways understood that “duck” was a type of light weight canvas material.. the sort of stuff used for say a painters drop cloth or a machinery / car cover
The duck tape we know today was invented by Charles L Adams, or Lee as he liked to be called. I was his nurse before his passing. Great guy, hell of a sense of humor.
I wonder if Mrs Stoudt was ever compensated for her idea. J&J probably got the patent rights.
Probably not, the man who invented post it notes got screwed by 3m
They probably sent her a free box of J&J Band-Aids.

@Migglesworth "Duck Tape" = trademarked name.

When I was in the Navy, we called it Ordnance Tape, and was camo green. It was used to secure the arming wires on bombs, loaded on carrier aircraft.
In the Royal Netherlands Navy it's called "McGyver tape".

Duck tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side and binds the universe together.
👎🐒👎🐒Are you an insomniac? Do you stay up at night "thinking" up comments like this?
In the military, it is sometimes called "500 mile" or "1000 mile" tape for its ability to withstand very high winds.

Gaffer tape is 10X Better. It is what Adam Savage uses and he hates duct tape
Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs. I've always said "duck tape" was wrong. I've learnt something so I'm happy.
Great Video,Very Informative! Good Job!
When I was about 6 years old, my dad humorously told me that duck tape was used in zoos to tape duck's bills shut, so they wouldn't eat too much and get fat. At the time, I believed him
Serial Killer Credo: "Duct tape is silver, but silence is golden."
Just found this guy not long ago n so far so great
Didn't know it was use in Apollo 13, equate Duct Tape with the Red Green Show.
In 2010 (2009?), my band was one of the acts entertaining at the International Duck Tape Festival in Avon, Ohio. One of the highlights of my wacky professional music career. lol

In the early 2000s the Walmart that sold the most duct tape was in Wasilla, Alaska.
I remember using duck tape to seal my windows to keep dust out of my room when I was living in the desert.
It doesn't work on ductwork. Dries out and comes loose.
Duct tape is like an old woman...
In the early 1980's I worked for a airline and we called duct tape 100 mile an hour tape.
I learned something in this video that I did not know. I always thought when people called
it Duck tape, that they were pronouncing it wrong.but found out that there is a reason why!
"THE MORE YOU KNOW" 🌈
Red Green has entered the chat.
Red green, is a master taper

It meets various requirements such as flammability and adhesive temperature limits. Then there is adhesive cloth tape. It looks the same and costs about 1/3 less than duct tape.
Dad was navy, always called it duck tape if it worked, army tape when it wouldnt work.
She should have named it Stoudt Tape because she earned the notoriety.
Perhaps its greatest contribution to society aside from the life saving uses was its inspiration of the Red Green Show.
How about the history or the Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife?
Make a video on wilt magnet motor patent..
I’ve used duck/duct tape on a great many things. But on duct work and venting I used foil tape.
Just remember, Vesta Stoudt was invented by duct tape in 1943.
Duct tape... if it's all you have. You'll survive and get by.
Duck tape is useless for sealing HVAC ducts. It doesn't stick that well and will dryout from the heat
Can you do a episode on 550 Paracord?
We'll note this on our list. Thank you :)
Hi! We made an episode about this :) You can check the video premiere here. Thank you! ua-cam.com/video/i8dTGcIGBTg/v-deo.html
Could it be used for leaking fuel pipes or fuel tanks?
nope
no. the adhesive would dissolve in fuel
I always understood it was also called Duck Tape because the cloth used was called cotton duck, a well known water resistant strong canvas much used for soft luggage.
I still refer to the tape as Duck Tape regardless of other explanations or variations - ! 😅
👎👎👎 I, I don't care.
B@Migglesworth Nope, that's being technically correct. Misname something and you may well end up with the wrong item. 🙄
Excellent video, but please lose the music, it is unnecessary! Thanks - Phil
you forgot..... " 200 mph tape"
(nascar....)
It is duck tape! It was developed during WWI to patch the air boats. Tape made from canvas Duck. Long before ducts were invented!
WWll
@mbrownie22 funny when Iwas a child 70 years ago, friends of my grandfather told us grandchildren about them being given gum and ducktape when they boarded the airboats during WWI incase the planes were shot up!
Romans used ducts
Wasn't it invented at Oregon University? 😅
Who invented the snap ring, how its made...
Another suggestion..
We'll cover this in our next video. Thank you!
was duct tape ever patented?
Rome wasn’t built in a day, but that’s because they didn’t have duct tape yet…
But they had ducts
duck tape, now called duct tape was first used for hunting ducks, neutra sweet was used for hunint netria in louisiana, and pussywillow was used for ..... well i'll let you figure it out.
It's Duck Tape.
Duck is a thick cotton cloth.
Well, so much for AI.
I had to click when I read this unintelligent title. Cheese n rice.
Gorilla tape is much better. Much more adhesive and lasts longer.
Duck tape CANNOT FIX STUPID but it can shut them up.😊
Duck tape is a brand name. Duck brand duct tape. Dumbest business idea ever, picking such a name.
Duct tape is the WORST thing for ducts. Aluminum foil tape is what is used.
"duct tape"
👎👎👎 I don't like having to do the editing for you. This should have been 3 min. long.
Gaffer tape - Used on film sets - By the Gaffer - The dude fixing cords and wires so nobody trips in Them🤷🏼♂️
Joe Biden needs a Gaffer!!!
IT IS DUCT TAPE USED FOR TAPING THE SEEMS IN DUCTWORK
yeah, but it isn't used in HVAC
How is (TUMS) made. Who invented TUMS?
Thank you! We will cover this in our next video and acknowledge you for your suggestion! :)
Hi! We covered your topic suggestion for our next video. You can check the video premiere here :) ua-cam.com/video/TENFVh-2Tuo/v-deo.html
