Quick Facts:
• 5th Studio Album released on March 9, 1987.
• The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988.
• Sold over 25 million copies worldwide.
• Debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #1 with 235,000 copies sold in its opening week, making it the fastest-selling album in UK history to that point. Was the 1st album to sell one million copies on CD in the US.
• Rolling Stones #27 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time
1. Where The Streets Have No Name - Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on the street on which they lived, particularly in Belfast.
2. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - Rolling Stone ranked #93 of its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Received Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
3. With Or Without You - Rolling Stone #132 on their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Was the group's most successful single at the time, becoming #1 hit in US. Bono wrote the lyrics while struggling to reconcile his responsibilities as both a married man and a musician.
4. Bullet The Blue Sky -Lyrically, the song was inspired by a trip that Bono made to Nicaragua and El Salvador, where he saw firsthand how local peasants were affected by US military intervention in the region.
5. Running To Stand Still - Ballad on piano and guitar, describes a heroin-addicted couple living in Dublin's Ballymun flats; the towers have since become associated with the song.
6. Red Hill Mining Town - The focus of the song is on the National Union of Mineworkers' 1984 strike in Great Britain that occurred in response to the National Coal Board's campaign to close uneconomic mines.
7. In God’s Country - It was developed out of Bono's frustration at trying to get "a bit of rock 'n' roll out of [U2 guitarist] the Edge."
8. Trip Through Your Wires - Has a bluesy rhythm and features lead singer Bono on harmonica. According to The Edge, the song was meant to be heard in the context of another song that never made it on the album, "The Sweetest Thing".
9. One Tree Hill - Was written in memory of Greg Carroll, the band first met in Auckland during the Unforgettable Fire Tour in 1984. Carroll was killed in July 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. Following the funeral in New Zealand, Bono wrote the lyrics in Carroll's memory.
10. Exit - The lyrics, which portray the mind of a serial killer, were inspired by Bono's reading of Norman Mailer's 1980 novel The Executioner's Song, and other related works.
11. Mothers Of The Disappeared - Inspired by Bono's experiences in Nicaragua and El Salvador in July 1986, following U2's participation in the Conspiracy of Hope tour of benefit concerts for Amnesty International.
Favorite Tracks: With Or Without You, Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Running To Stand Still, Exit
Overall Score: 9/10 (Trey), 9.25/10 (Shawn)

Sorry for your loss. RIP Jag.
Listening to U2 is what church ought to be like.
Amen!😊😊😊😊
U2 is my favorite band, followed by the Beatles, so I'm glad you did this review and the Beatles first seven albums. Looking forward to your reviews of the rest of the Beatles albums and hopefully more U2 album reviews.
My favorite track is Red Hill Mining Town. Before the album's release, I remember reading in the U2 fan club magazine that it was going to be their first single and saw pictures of the video. We waited, but it didn't release as a single or video. We learned later that they weren't happy with the video and had problems performing it live during rehearsals for the tours and thus cancelled plans to release it as a single.
Incidentally, prior to release it was rumored that The Joshua Tree was almost a double album, with ten songs being cut because most weren't quite finished. The plan was to release theses ten songs as B-sides, finishing the recording while on tour. With Or Without got two, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For got two and Where The Streets Have No Name got three. For In God's Country, they were supposed to release the final three songs as it's B-side but decided to save those and a fourth song for a planned double album, with one side of studio recordings and three sides of live recordings. That eventually (with additional new songs) became Rattle and Hum.
rager1969 Rattle and Hum is incredible. They should review that too.
I was just recommending a re listened to Red Hill Mining Town to someone on another channel. Moments ago...chills! Ans smiles!!
I’ve heard a lot of albums but this album is just perfect
It is fantastic for sure! Thanks for watching!
Great analysis guys! This album actually helped save my life at a time when I was going though heavy depression. Look forward to you guys doing Acthung Baby which I think is equally great!
Appreciate the comment and so glad this album gave you some light in a dark time! Music is more powerful than most understand for those of us that really love it. Appreciate you watching Jeremy!
Great review. Like hearing all the backstory/meanings to the songs. Such a classic. I drove through Joshua Tree National Park listening to the whole thing for 3 hours straight back in '09. Talk about an epic soundtrack!
Ok that is a GREAT story! Appreciate you sharing and watching!
Well, as discussed with my older sister who now lives in Spain (me still in Canada): she stated that U2 is a special band and i have to agree. I liked this program and will continue to do so. My favorites : In Gods Country, Red Hill, and Streets….
Thanks so much for watching John! Great song choices as well.
Great details and review per usual. I do like the coordinated shirts 😃. Funny how a week or so ago I was congratulating you on going past 700 and now closing in fast in 1000! Keep it up! (Btw- listened to Revolver because of you. Excellent album)
Another great review. Love what you do fellas. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the kind words Randy and really appreciate you watching!
The Joshua Tree is my favorite U2 album, and "I Still haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is my favorite song.
Best band in the world!
Thanks for watching Anna!!!
They began this tour in Phoenix in a 7000 seat arena. They ended it two years later in Phoenix as the biggest band in the world playing two sold out shows for 70,000 a show (as seen in the concert film Rattle and Hum). I was lucky enough to go to both amazing shows. Not so big on any of their post 2000 albums but got to see them a couple years ago when they did their Joshua Tree album tour and it made me fall in love with them again. Great job guys!
Thanks Dan and agree on many things you said. So jealous you got to see them back in the 80's during this peak! Appreciate you watching!
Put Achtung Baby, The Unforgettable Fire, War and Zooropa as other U2 albums to check out.
put on the list.
Oh wow! A lovely review of one of my fave albums by one of my fave bands! My fave tracks are One Tree Hill, In God's Country, Bullet The Blue Sky and Red Hill Mining Town.
But here's something to consider (playing devil's advocate): everybody talks about The Edge's musicality on this where he ramps up his game, with loads of atmospherics, etc, which is great - but if you listen to the backbeat, this is really a drummer's album. Larry Mullen Jr's heavy-hitting beats are really fantastic, with all his snare syncopation and on-the-floor thumps. They lock in brilliantly with Adam Clayton's open bass notes.
You may want to try Achtung Baby, the next step the band took with the "sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree".
Great Points Chris, I think Larry's drums are indeed pivotal to the album and appreciate the perspective and insight! Appreciate you watching!
saw them at NEC Birmingham England. Not a weak song on it. a real classic.
Again, I'm excited that you reviewed a U2 album. This is the album that made me a U2 fan. The song that made me one, "With Or Without You." I still remember that video, OMG. I can't say what song I find weak on here because I don't think there is one. My mom loves "Where The Streets Have No Name." I like that one too. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is what I would call a spiritual song, inspirational in a way because he's still searching. I love "Red Hill Mining Town," "In God's Country," "Trip Through Your Wires" and "One Tree Hill." "Bullet The Blue Sky" is good. I most remember the guitar sounding very warlike and the line about peeling off those dollar bills, slapping them down, one hundred, two hundred, I can see those fighter planes, I can see those fighter planes, across the mud huts and quiet city streets. As I said about Achtung Baby, Bono can sure write a lyric.
So agree and I think With or Without You is still one of my fav 25 songs ever!!
Good work folks
Thanks for watching Stephen O'Regan!
My favourite album of all time!
High praise but it is a great one! Thanks!
One Tree Hill is the song of this album, it is deeper than most people think, it has a very bleak spirit, dark, like a bad warning for us humans.
It is good for sure!
Thanks! Red Hill Mining Town is sooo underrated, love Bonos voice on it... Please also react to All that you cant leave behind, top 3 U2 album for me :)
That one is up next for us with U2, we also already have done Achtung Baby. Thanks for the suggestion and watching!
Oocht! Be still my beating heart!!😊
WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - THE GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME ON THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME BY THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME WITH ZOO TV TOUR 92/93 BEING THE GREATEST TOUR OF ALL TIME MUSICALLY AND VISUALLY. ALSO 360' TOUR IS THE HIGHEST EARNING TOUR OF ALL TIME GROSSING OVER £850 MILLION.
Thanks J
I can still remember buying the album at the midnight release, back in 1987. There was a feeling in the air that this one was going to be special.
And oh dear me, was it ever! Almost every track a stone cold classic, and not a second of filler to be found anywhere. That's rare, indeed.
And unlike a lot of other albums that perhaps lose their appeal over time, The Joshua Tree became lodged in the brain on first listen and then
only got better and better the more you heard it. And I must've heard it a thousand times by now, and I still love it.
I think Achtung Baby is arguably their best album, but they're both different enough to be valid classics in their own right.
It all went downhill after that, mind you. But from 1980-93, U2 released more amazing music than any one band has any right to.
Achtung Baby is probably the next U2 album we will tackle. Thanks for watching!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Looking forward to it. :)
If you don’t count London Calling by The Clash (released Dec 1979 in the UK, Jan 1980 in the US), The Joshua Tree is probably the best album of the 80s. U2 doesn’t get the credit they deserve because of their very poor recent output, but they are one of the greatest bands of all time.
Couldn't agree more Nick. Unfortunately there is always a recency bias unless people go back and explore the back catalog when a band was at their peak, which we learn all the time on this channel! Appreciate you watching!
I still think they do good songs it just doesn't have the same energy. U can say that's coz they are older now, but actung baby was the beginning of them taking a different style
el disco de u2 sin dudas
It is a great one but we feel Achtung Baby is in contention! Thanks!
Please review Achtung Baby. IMO the best album of the 90's and U2's greatest album.
We already have reviewed it and it is up on the channel. Thanks for watching!
My favourite album
I’m not religious but this album makes me want to be
haha that is a great comment. Thanks for watching!
I can't stand WOWY and ISHFWILF, but the rest of this album is absolutely perfect. In God's Country is one of my fave songs ever.
Thanks for watching Sean Moloney!
Excellent review unfortunately you're probably won't get many views because it's too good,, as for my favorites obviously the opening track on side one and an unusual one trip through your wire for me I don't know why but it's my favorite on the album and yet I still don't understand it I'll have to give it a closer listen and maybe even read the lyrics sheet!!!!😎😃✌
Thanks Frederick, appreciate you watching!
I can't be objective on this album, got go 10/10. I listened to it in college, I listen to it now in my middle age, and I'll probably listen to it on my death bed, through my Google brain chip.
haha Chris I am that way on some albums and some songs. Just a 10 for me even though I know it isnt a 10 lol. Thanks for watching!!
U2 kind of gets a bad rap nowadays but this is really a killer album and nothing else U2 ever did comes close. It's a 9.0/10 for me as well. The ending's a bit slow in my opinion, with Exit and Mothers of the Disappeared being two of my three least favorites. Still a great one.
Would be great to see a chart with all albums you have given a 10, 9.75, 9.5, etc.
Great points Josh, and I'll look into making a document or chart and sharing it with everyone as that would be interesting to see how all the ratings compare with each other!
I really hope you will review Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell soon!
It is on our list for some point this year. Appreciate you watching!
With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found" are both biographical songs for me as a closeted (at the time) trans person. I was invested in "pray it away" theology so "I Still" spoke very much to the idea that persuing God didn't solve the issue, and WOWY is, of course, being unable to live with being "her" because of what that would mean in Mississippi in the 80's, and also miserable and unable to live forever in the closet without her.
Wow I can imagine the connection with this then! Really sorry you had to go through that Tammy!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics if you are curious how that story of reading myself into the lyrics of a seemingly unrelated song climaxed, I accepted myself and began my transition in 2008 and that experience transformed "Losing My Religion" from "good song" to "literal story of my life." I wrote briefly about it here:
medium.com/@Tammy_Beth/losing-my-religion-2305cda17f75
Wow that is a great article and so well said. I was a pastor for a few years and my wife and I always talk about the hypocrisy in the so-called church world.
It’s a great album- but it’s a bit top heavy due to the placement of the tracks
Yes hard to follow those top 3. Thanks Eve!
Not among my favorite bands or albums of all time but they still have some solid stuff. 7/10
I feel the same. Not much more I can add.
You Too
Ha-ha. You’re not smart.
A shame Bono became such a shill for the filthy rich banksters :(
BONO WIPED OUT ALL THE DEBT IN THE WORLD'S POOREST 18 COUNTRIES SAVING 100'S OF MILLIONS OF LIVES. YOU'VE done f**k all in you're life #L*ser
boring band most of their stuff sounds the same 3 good songs on this lp and that's it seriously overrated band .
Boring band compared to who? I grew up on Judas Priest, Ozzy, Maiden, AC/DC etc.. U2 arrived on the scene like they were from another planet. Difficult for me to see them as boring.
Lol! What?!?!?!?!?!?!
You have to see it from the perspective of someone listening to u2 when they were only new. No one had heard the guitar sound that the edge had invented before. Their music sounded (and still does) like it came from a completely different planet. Sadly due to a number of bands copying the edges style and sound, the music industry has become oversaturated with the clean dotted 8th delay type sound. This is why it sounds so boring to you and others nowadays
Boring?! I don't think so. Coldplay is boring. Oasis is overrated, seriously overrated. Nirvana, in my opinion, is overrated. U2 has had a pretty solid career w/some pretty solid albums. I own nine of their albums. The only bands I like more are INXS, now they're an underrated band, and Led Zeppelin, who I think are better than The Beatles or The Stones. But hey, that's just my opinion.
