- Family fun in the summer at Slide Rock Rock State Park is fantastic but can you go in the winter? Of course! Today we visit the park to check out the stunning red rock scenery blanketed in snow to see what fun is to be found at Oak Creek.
Slide Rock State Park's flowing waters in Oak Creek Canyon are the main attraction. A small section of Oak Creek features naturally carved slides that welcome families and guests seeking out a cool reprieve from the summer heat.
The property was once owned by the Pendley family - homesteaders who acquired the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. The family planted apple orchards, grew vegetables, and raised livestock. Many of the historic buildings remain there today including the family home, cabins from the 1930s, and the apple packing shed. Guests are welcome to pick the fruit when ripe.

Welcome to the Cactus Atlas! We are Glenn and Amy and invite you to join us as we visit all sorts of locations across the American West. We tour both natural and man-made attractions.
Our base of operations is in the Phoenix, AZ area. We do a lot of hiking, day trips, and campground reviews and hope that we will be a great resource if you are planning a trip to the American West. We also hope to delight you with our exciting adventures!
Gorgeous. Thanks for taking us along. Perfect time to visit.
Our pleasure! And it certainly was a great time to visit. Just majestic! 😊
I bet this place is packed in the summer 😎 I like it better in the winter ❄️ with the snow and light crowds 👍
Oh it can get insane in the summer we imagine just judging from traffic trying to get into the park alone. It's a very popular destination when it gets hot in the Phoenix valley.
Thanks Glenn, great video.
Glad you enjoyed our video! Thanks for watching. 👍
😎💙 Very Cool, Thanx! 💥 👋
Thank you too! 😊
I kept picturing being a kid growing up on that farm, climbing rocks, sliding in the river, and eating apples warm from the sun. Paradise. This was glorious, thank you both!
Indeed! It must have been quite the life at the time to have grown up with those surroundings as a playground. I'm sure a lot of work, but quite the payoff when you had time to yourself. 😊
Of all the years I lived in Arizona- we never visited here- such a great time to visit with that beautiful snow!!!
Totally agree! We never really thought to visit in the winter before but honestly so worth it! 😄
We were there a month ago and had the same amount of snow, we absolutely loved it, Great video!
Thank you! It was completely fun, right? I'm not sure why we never thought to go in previous years when it snows. The contrast between the snow and the red rocks is stunning. Were there snowmen on the grounds as well when you went?
@@CactusAtlas Actually there were a couple. Being from South Florida we didn't expect that much snow, but we saw tons of it especially driving on the 89 to Flagstaff and through to the Grand Canyon. Such a beautiful area and can't wait to go back.
You definitely picked great areas to explore. One can't go wrong with Oak Creek Canyon or the Grand Canyon. 👍 We've had a bit of a wetter season in the state this year - lots more snow and rain than normal so it made for a snowy season up north. It felt like it was hitting us every Thursday for the past couple weeks.
Iv never heard of slide rock it's beautiful gotta stay in cabins
Not entirely sure the cabins are open to the public now. Would be really cool though! 😄
Thank you once again for hitting a place I prob will never get to see. It’s like I was there…and younger. 😁
Our pleasure! It's a fun place to spend time. 😊
That place opened the same month and year my son was born.
I’ve never been in the water but walked around it a few times. Nice place and definitely packed in the summer. Thanks for sharing.
Any time! Winter turns out to be just as interesting there. 😄
I've wanted to check Slide Rock out but every time we've looked into it the crowds are usually the first thing that comes up so we've never been. The area looks incredible covered in snow.
Yes, exactly. That places is usually a madhouse. Even driving on 89 around there is an adventure with people parking up and down on the side of the road for miles. One of my least favorite places in AZ during peak season.
Wow, I had never seen that area under a blanket of snow, but truly beautiful! Not sure that I prefer it to the warmer touristy times when it's all a buzz of people. Either way, it is just a beautiful part of Sedona.
We totally agree! Seeing it blanketed in snow was a completely different experience from the norm. Not sure I'd want to see it lately though with all the snow melt and such - it's been insane looking judging from the video rangers are showing on social media! 😯
I've been there...unless your super FIT it's not great... however, my photographers eye is so jealous night now! Wish I could drive up there!
The summer crowd honestly has just never appealed to us. We've seen so many times when driving in the area, the turn lane coming from the south backed up. But winter crowds with some snow? Perfection! 😄
Hi my friends
Snow we got rain lol how cold is it their
Yeah we got rain here in Phoenix at our house too. I think it was in the 50s at the park when we went.
And yet another place in Sedona that I knew nothing about. The slide…..no thanks. There is another one south of Sequoia National Park that’s not so scary.
It's mind boggling to think of a time without the tourism. Waking up to harvest apples from your orchard and all those views to yourself. Must have been quite the life. 😊
Just found your channel and we are loving it! For Amy, at the end of the video it is to late for me to like and and I have to go back into video and “like”. I don’t know how it all works but because I watch on Roku I’d like a visual clue to like before the end of video. Glen, you are like so many of us Phoenicians who love going out into our desert and explore without all the social crowds. 👍🫶🏻
Awesome! Thank you! I'll see what I can do to add a prompt in videos. Even though all the recommendations for UA-camrs are to push subscribing/liking/etc throughout videos we tend to shy away from it because it isn't our style and makes us a bit uncomfortable. 😅
The like is up above...you have to use your remote
