    Never heard of this car. Thanks for another badass lesson. THIS is history. Definitely better than history class

      Saw this Engine at a Museum in San Marcos TX last month and was very confused about a 6 cylinder Flat Engine, Reminded me of Subaru's XT6's Engines. thanks to this video, now i know what i was looking at it, wish i would have appreciated it more but it was an Engine that had no description board infront of it.

      You never heard of this car? Where have you been hiding?

  • @richdiscoveries

    I'm definitely going to have to watch this a little later when I have time. Preston Tucker was an absolute genius!!! He would have been very famous and very rich, but the big three shut him down and stole all his safety Innovations. Integrated roll cage, safety glass, pop out glass, padded dashboards those were all his Innovations and now most of those features are in every car you see on the roads. It even came with a cover for the center headlight for states that didn't allow 3 headlights.. also if I remember correctly, all the body panels were made out of recycled metal from junkyard cars as well.
    Such an amazing story turned tragic because of money, politics and greed

      RICH DISCOVERIES I agree with all of these points. From an engineering stand point both the Tucker and Tatra should have paved the way for the modern automobile and stuck around.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries 6 років тому +14

      @@deedler5687 I became obsessed with this car back in the 90s when the movie came out. I've done a lot of reading on them since. The car had doors that opened up into the roof so you can get in and out without crouching or taking your hat off. And the seats were interchangeable so that you can swap them around every year to keep the wear on the seats even!! Lol So many innovations that I can't even remember them all.
      He definitely bit off more than he can chew, and a company most likely would have never made it without Financial backing and support from bigger companies. They say the big three had nothing to do with him going bankrupt, but I have my doubts about that. But who knows, starting an entire car company all by yourself it's nearly impossible, even in today's world

      สุราณี พยุงเกษม I’d say showing respect and sharing a piece of car history that not many people know about is what they’re doing. That is what Up To Speed is meant to be for. Yeah they’ve done popular cars but doing a video on Tucker doesn’t mean they’re running out of ideas, it means they have a real love for ALL automotive history.

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries 6 років тому +6

      @@SLVRGTP absolutely!! They want to showcase all cars and there is so many to choose from. Plus don't they do these based on subscriber feedback?? They're always asking people what they want the episode to be about, so I'm sure enough people must have suggested this in order for them to do it. There is definitely an interest in these vehicles. I'm only 40 and I have been researching them myself over the years so I'm sure other people my age or even younger have as well

I first learned about tucker when I was a kid I went to napa valley with my family and we visited the Francis Coppola(Director of The Godfather and the tucker film) winery. There is a section in the winery dedicated to all his previous films filled with props, and he had a tucker car on display there with the whole story of tucker and explaining all the revolutionary features of the car. The next day I watched the movie, and I fell in love with the car and the story. I've made it a personal goal of mine to one day own one of these cars.

    In the mid 80s, I was visiting my father for the weekend. I accompanied him as he made a brief visit at a funeral home to pay respects to a friend. I waited in Dad's car. While waiting, i noticed the funeral home had a large garage attached with multiple doors. I peaked in a window and saw what at first I thought was a late 40s Studebaker. I was shocked to see that it actually was a Trucker. There was no doubt. What I had thought was the central chrome nose of a Studebaker was actually a 3rd headlight. The Tucker was painted, as I recall, in a medium blue. I was given permission to go into the garage. Also in there were two or three Deusenbergs. It's a 35 year old memory so I'm not clear on the pacticulars, but it seems that one of the Duesenbergs was sans the body. A complete chassis. I was, as now, a car freak. I didnt know much about Tuckers or Doozies, but I knew enough to recognize them. As I recall this funeral home was located in Franklin, Indiana.

    The Cord transmission proof to be one of the key in Tucker's trial. Apparently they scoured all over US to find used Cord transmission and it was submitted as an "evidence" to say that Tucker didn't have a mass produce cars and made his from leftover junkyard parts.
    They forget to mention that it was common to used leftover and junkyard parts at making prototypes, including the big three.

      Also, by the time of the trial, most (if not all) Tucker cars remaining at the factory had been converted to Y-1's which were 100% manufactured at the Chicago Plant. The only parts that interchange between a Cord transaxle and a Y-1 is the Solenoid Pack and some of the vacuum-actuator parts. Tucker engineers even redesigned the Oil pump within the transmission for more consistent oil pressure.

      Not exactly. If I recall correctly, they had 5 or 6 real cars for the movie, plus Francis Ford Coppola's two Tuckers (The Maroon one and the Silver one). Many were fiberglass replicas and the stunt car that was rolled was cobbled together from a late 40's Studebaker.

      Okay, that actually makes more sense. I do recall reading the scrolling text at the end of the film - before the ending credits - the number of Tuckers produced and still roadworthy. On the DVD, one of the bonus tracks had an interview with Francis Ford Coppola, and he mentioned the Tuckers he owns. There is another individual associated with the movie who also owns one Tucker. All I remember is Coppola saying there were a total of three Tuckers personally owned by film's key people. It may have been the producer.

    Pumphrey, I'm a big fan of these shows but I have to edumacate you on a couple things in this episode. First, Ypsilanti is pronounced "ipsa-lantee". It's an eclectic little town of retired factory workers with a good mix of hipsters. Most people live here because they can't afford Ann Arbor. Second, you missed the little known Porsche connection with Tucker that I only learned about at the Porsche Effect exhibit at the Petersen museum earlier this year. Apparently Porsche wanted to sell a sedan version of their car in the US and teamed up with Tucker. Porsche did a lot of the design work but ultimately decided there wasn't a good business case for them. Porsche also had some involvement with the Corvair that also didn't pan out. Lesser known fun facts I thought I would share. Keep up the good work.

    Going to AACA in Hershey next week because I'm a little obsessed with these. The Cammack collection there has a whole workshop of Tucker goodness that I've never seen, soooo, it's time! I'm trying to see as many as I can before I shed this veil and enter the void. I've seen the one in this video, one at the Smithsonian and one at the LaPorte Indiana Historical society. Just the neatest bit of kit, each and every one.

    Tucker even had a convertible under development. A company that bought several crates of equipment also bought the convertible parts. They later put it together. It is a thing of beauty.

      Its only the french bastardization of an algonquin word, its not that complicated.
      Try: Dowagiac, Charlevoix, Kitch-iti-kipi, Gratiot, Ocqueoc, Tahquamenon, Naubinway, Les Cheneaux, Gogebic, Mackinac, and Tittabawassee.
      None of those are pronounced how they sound.

    Do a video on the car company Geo

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 6 років тому +3

      Geo was just a GM sub brand inside of Chevy dealers to sell small cars made by other marques, like Suzuki, Isuzu and even Toyota (the Prizm at today's Tesla factory in Fremont, CA). The brand didn't even had their own separate lots / sections like Toyota did w/Scion...
      Saturn, OTOH, started as an independent brand within GM with their own cars and dealer lots, even their own way (no-haggling set price) of marketing, which was different from the rest of GM back then.
