The original was teen-rated and didn't have that censorship, and hardly anyone noticed it was even there in the low-polygon 90s graphics (especially the console version). The remasters are M-rated and still censored. Inexcusable.

I was like "yeah, that makes sense", until it was said it was rated M anyways. "Theoretically" children wouldn't even be playing it to begin with, so... I dunno, just make it an option? I've played some games that give the option of censoring nudity, so I don't know why this couldn't be the case for streaming.

They also changed the meander pattern in one of the Graeco-Roman trim textures to remove the swastika in it (which was a normal, innocuous feature of ancient Graeco-Roman art) but only in the Remastered graphics mode (it's still there if you switch to the original graphics).
The Nazis weren’t even present during those time lines. That’s pretty dumb.

That is irrelevant to the censorship. In some contries the symbol is illegal due to it being Nazi symbolism. Realism and historical context does not matter in these cases, the game will be banned if it has the symbol in it.

The Swastika has never been part of Classical culture. It originated in South Asia and was only imported to the West in the 19th century.

for those that don't know, the M rating is because of the spike death. Impairment gets almost any game a M rating. Since about 05-06.
Which is fine. However, because of the M-rating, it makes no sense to remove the nudity.

@@jlev1028 The "2010s reboot trilogy" AKA the survivor trilogy are all rated M. If you are thinking of the "legend" trilogy. They are rated T and don't have any impalement. Lara just kind of flops on top of the spikes in those games.
Okay, I was wondering; that's interesting. I know the ESRB rates things that used to be below a M harsher these days (SO many Teens from my childhood are Ms now, like Killer Instinct, even with it's lesser fatalities compared to MK) while M gets away with SO much more now - it's a pretty big oxymoron. Plenty of interesting cases, Mega Man X4 (which maybe should have been Teen to begin with the blood in the FMVs), Xenosaga (Teen? Really? Not to be prude, but....) and Wild Arms going from K-A to Everyone 10+ with the remake. The ins and outs of the rating system are pretty interesting.

That could be it. Funny thing is there is actually nudity elsewhere in the games, in certain textures. But many of the new textures appear to have been created by AI upscaling the original textures, so it's possible that the devs didn't even notice those examples.
Some games have a streaming censorship option to avoid any issue.
It's literally two red pixels, it wouldn't even trigger filters on streams.
If you didn’t discuss it her then also censored out the Etruscan swastika designs replacing them with a different kind of Greek key design.
Both are ancient traditional designs found on Greek and Roman architecture.
Modders already fixed this a few days ago with a new texture, even in the new style which is great. Its over on the Nexus.
While its sad they censored this... the old texture was hard to make out what it was even, now its high res and can easily be see... not to mention the camera mode allows you to pause and zoom in on anything. Mod works great though! Sad just a single nipple in a texture would cause an uproar or even a change of the age rating.

My issue is it's apparently an M rated game now so it does make me wonder if this was originally intended to keep the game at a T rating but at some point it just slipped to the higher rating and they went ahead and kept that texture changed.
Why would they bother putting the remaster out there and tamper with the original things? Just leave it alone. They shouldn't have done that to the original or don't make the switch this easy and put it as a menu option.

To be fair, it's not like that was something that could be seen on a CRT TV with PS1 graphics, seems like it was more or less a joke for the devs. They probably wanted to be safe just in case they do release it in other regions
I can understand why they would do it. In 1998 nobody was going to notice this. But today you have data miners and modders and people will hyperfixate on any small detail. You got to be ready to have anything you create be put under the microscope for the entire internet to criticize.

There aren't specific channels I know of that cover censorship like this, but there are gaming channels that will cover the topics like DarkTitanEnterprises, but most in gaming don't bring up censorship or think it's a big issue. You'll run into adult oriented games most time when looking for those that won't censor their games, but I can't think of a specific way to find developers other than finding a game you like and researching who made it. It's easier to find games that have had censorship removed on rom and iso sites.

Dude imma tell you right now if your goal is to avoid censored games, you might as well quit gaming. Don't get me wrong, I hate it to (we most certainly live in a wild ass, oversensitive ass society nowadays), but the problem is that you'll find virtually every game is censored, even the M-rated and gory ones. Dying Light 2, Resident Evil 4 remake, Super Mario RPG remake, Secret of Mana remake(?), etc, the list goes fucking on. That's without mentioning post-launch gaslighting patches that alter details as well, like fucking Skull Girls (crazy they went back to an old game like that to censored shit).

Crystal Dynamics "fixed" this in the Anniversary remake, changing the names from Thor and Neptune to Hephaestus and Poseidon, respectively. However, this didn't really work for Thor because the puzzle room has a lightning-themed obstacle, which fits Thor better.

You should avoid buying the remaster because you're uninterested in it, not because of this minor censorship. I played Tomb Raider 1 a few years ago, and I never even noticed the image. The guy who is chasing you is usually pretty far away, and you're so busy trying to stay alive (because the game is so hard), that what's on his back is the last thing you'll be paying attention to.
The censorship is completely unnecessary, but it's not a deal breaker by any stretch.

Back then, the game was running at very low resolutions, everything was pixelated. And that's on top of everything I mentioned before, Pierre being far away, him only showing up infrequently, Pierre moving quickly, and the player frantically trying to survive. The last thing you'll notice is the image on his back.
This is an incredibly minor thing that no one would notice if it hadn't been pointed out. If you're not getting the remaster, you likely weren't going to get it in the first place.

Standards change over time in regards to ratings. Earthbound used to be rated E and is now rated T, older Pokémon games had their age ratings increased in Europe due to the gambling content, and there's probably many more examples. It's nothing really to be concerned about its just how these boards operate. Standards for ratings change over decades

From looking up online. The Green Medipacks are the large ones, its in Tomb Raider 3 original if you look it up. Assuming you are talking about the remastered graphics on why they decided on that. Minor thing but not a big deal honestly

The initial prohibition was to prevent a red cross on the side or tents or vehicle to prevent anyone thinking it's a red cross encampment or vehicle when it isn't.

The remaster for the most part has been excellent, but I'm sick and tired of this completely unnecessary censorship. The game collection is M-Rated/18 now and as an actual adult I despise being treated as a child when playing and viewing media in gaming. This kinda nonsense doesn't nearly happen as much in say movies, so why should games be any different? Why even have rating boards if its gonna be censored anyway? Also, this isn't 80s or early 90s anymore where it was mostly kids playing games :-)

More proof that Nightdive is objectively the best studio when it comes to ports/remasters, they wouldn't do this kind of shite
I remember in Silent Hill there is actually a pørn magazine on a table where a woman is spreading showing everything. It was so pixelated that it get flagged.
I think some of the reason why so much of this gets flagged is because publishers check their games much better than they use to. Think about how Core Design could kill off Laura Craft in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation simply because they didn’t want to make more TR games. That could never happen today. Publishers have the final say unfortunately.
What im assuming happened was they were aiming for the T rating. Decided to change the asset aiming for that, presented it to the esrb. Got slapped with an M rating essentially being told they wasted their time and just said screw it not worth fixing it and kept developing.
Nexus mods banned mods for this game. That tells me all I need to know that I should not purchase this game.
And the people who say it's no big deal, it seems to have been a big deal for the developers to remove it in the first place. They Bank on people to ignore the things they do so they can get away with doing worse in the future.

The fact that the tomb raider remastered trilogy is now rated m instead of the original teen rating just shows that modern society is way too damn soft. Okay, I'm playing on PS4 and just went back to this part. I used photo mode to look, and I see absolutely nothing censored. It looks exactly the same. I must have missed something, cuz I see no censorship! Hurray!
The original jacket probably got away with it because you very rarely see his back when fighting him as he likes to face you as much as possible, and then he finally does die most people didn't really take a good look at the corpse
So when they added that cringe disclaimer at the beginning that was a lie

I guess players should be wary of this #IndecisiveCompany then as they might do another #BobLiager if they are not careful.
It might seem like a small detail that doesent effect much. While that would be correct, it had obviously hardly any impact on the game, it still goes to show that the developer went in for the trouble to purposely change it to a cencored version.
That does tell you a meriad of things in how they work, what their views are, their whole philosopy in fact.
It perfectly aligns with modern day politics and how it is forced into every medium possible.

Some posters were removed from the game...and then the backlash by the playerbase made Aspyr put it back.
We made Aspyr bend the knee in our favor. I'm sure Crystal Dynamics must be *FUMING* with rage.
I think the more we're avancing into time, the more nudity is censored and violence is accepted. Making any ultra violent game is no longer a problem, like at all, but showing some part of human anatomy is...Funny part is we all have a body while we are not all ultra violent...
To be fair pixelated graphics are already a form of censorship, so a nude with old school graphics is not really considered as a nude, while 2024 graphics could make it as what it is.
And I also like the new design and tend to think it is even more adapted to the concept of pin up models too, as they often adopt a sexy attitude without necessary showing anything...
I think the message at the beginning of the remaster and this jacket are to anticipate a possible woke polemic. People who already existed at the time it was released would understand mentalities were different and couldn't be shocked, but some of the ones who weren't born might not share this opinion...
They can alter it anytime they want, because it's only digital. They can alter any game that's digital. I've seen this coming for a while now. Same with always online games. Hell, Microsoft even gave it a go with the kinect on the Xbox one. Remember.
