  • Thanks to Jack for letting me have a spin in his very tidy Mk2 Focus ST, tuned by Collins Performance. It was interesting for me comparing this to my current Focus RS Mk2, and I also had an ST back in the day too :)
    Check out his group - Total Fords on Facebook and Instagram!

    I have the same 2.5 turbo 5 pot engine in my MPV. It pulls my Ford S-max along perfect! The engine is smooth and has character.
    People saying it is weak because only 220hp have to remember how incredibly conservative this is tuned and what basic parts it has as standard. Not even forgetting its FWD intended application and long service interval. How much torque it has from factory is good even for a big MPV. Ford and Volvo people have fully built it with all upgraded parts and bigger turbo. They can get 650-700-800hp all day, not just for the track, not even race fuel. The engine is a classic design. Although by "Modern standards" it my be too thirsty, I get 15 MPG driving around central London where I live, max. I can get 30 MPH on a slow clear road cruse.
    I got the bigger Airtec inter-cooler and Ramair intake. I am thinking about the exhaust but I do not want any silly noise around town.
    The engine makes the S-Max feel light, you always got to remember it is not.
    In comparison to my old 2.2 TDCI powered S-Max the 2.5T S-Max is a dream to drive. Although, the 2.2 TDCI was one of the smoother Diesels with more factory torque than the 2.5T at the end of the day the 2.2 TDCI was agricultural in comparison. The 2.2 never returned me less than 25 MPG so it did have that going for it. Then again it never return much more. It ended up giving me ALL the EGR ,VNT, DPF, Injector and other diesel related maintenance issues. Around town in E1 London the last thing you want is the constant Daggg Dagger of the TDCIs high pressure pistons charging up and down, even if it pulls like a train.

    Actually the standard recirc valve is something you definitely need to upgrade if you remap the car. The oem one is made of plastic and contains a fragile spring which goes bad if you increase the boost.

    My ST 225 Mk2 has 300HP, stage 2 tuned for extra 75hp. Got a nd-tuning Gen2 CAIS Cold Air Induction System, AIRTEC GEN3 INTERCOOLER, massive exhaust - the ends both measure 5" across, the largest I have ever seen on a ST - not sure the make, it came with the car. The Dreamscience map is insane, and the car is a real handful at 300hp, especially in the wet and on the straight - torque steer is a slight problem if your head isn't switched on when you boot it. The boost just keeps going and going, 1.2 all the way up the gears. The sound is amazing, even when idle, but boot it and you need some noise-cancelling headphones. Only paid £3.5k for it, and that is the most fun I've had for such little money.

      @@CarFocused Thanks. It was cheap because of the paintwork. Sun has dulled the driver's side, the bonnet has some lacquer peeling, and there is a slight ding at a rear arch. Apparently, according to the seller, everyone who had interest walked away because of the paintwork - Whereas myself, I'm never too bothered by aesthetics, it's a great car.

    I fitted a 3" downpipe, 3" de cat and a mountune non resonated 3" cat back to mine, like you say, driven normally its just a Focusl' but open the taps and it sounds wicked. They are getting a touch old now but being a manual, you can't beat the experience. Got some Eibach springs and a uprated rear anti roll bar to go on as the next mod.
    Good video, keeping old Fords alive!

      you can beat the experience by having the Italian 5 cylinder turbo that has an actual throttle cable connected to the engine so you can feel exactly what the engines doing that is known to handle big power with better than volvo reliability and less running issues.

    Still love the Mk2 ST and this is a good one. I’d change the recirc before the actuator too see if that cures the boost drop off (though the ST turbo’s boost will drop off at higher revs). An LSD and new front bushes would work wonders. We need a 5 pot Focus meet up 😊

Within 30 mins on a backroad I'd gotten use to it and would never have an ST225 without one. Now I've got a front lower strut brace and sitting on bilsteins so it's even better. Sharper up front and the rear stays flatter. Good combo if money allows mate. But fundamentally the rear anti roll bar is a cheap, great upgrade. I promise 👍

    The standard Ford recirc valves aren't great as soon as you start modifying. Ford themselves have admitted they put the wrong springs in and they only have a plastic housing. You'll notice the difference will hold boost better and give you a slight difference in turbo flutter too.

  • @PhilGuitarsnCars
    @PhilGuitarsnCars 4 роки тому

    The whistle will more than likely be the standard recirc valve. 'The mouse' shows up whenever you put an aftermarket induction kit on them. Same issue is present on the mk2 RS.

    • @PhilGuitarsnCars
      @PhilGuitarsnCars 4 роки тому

      It's definitely worth it 100%. Although the standard part is 'up to the job' an aftermarket, better quality valve is always a no loss upgrade. Have a turbosmart on my mk2 RS running revo 4+ 441hp and it does the job nicely. Also fitted one recently to a mates pfl mk2 St and it got rid of the whistle for him to. He also has a ramair intake on that.

    The mk2 st is a great car my Mrs has a standard 1, it's got a smooth pull all the way through the rev range no sudden turbo boost feel but keeps on pulling, she needs a exhaust thought dont get that 5 pot raw ,I will have to sort that, drives very different to a mk2 rs not tight and direct like the mk2 rs when I took my bluefin map off my mk2 rs it lost that dump of boost like you were saying gary on your mk2 rs, and I find with the st steering you have to to turn the wheel a lot to get round corners or maybe cause mk3 rs is sensitive great vid cheers steve👍😀

Don't imagine you can really compare the two (ST/RS) as they are completely different motors, bonus of a 10yo+ ST is you can thrash it about and not have park miles away from a supermarket entrance. Was parked next to one identical to yours today, was a thing of beauty 👍

    Coming from a MK3 Focus RS and ST I did grow a liking for the ford hatchbacks but I must say that Ford always fails in their interiors and looks to me like they particularly age well either and I don’t mean by touch and feel it just looks overall cheap and outdated. Now I can compare this with a same 2010 VW GTI which are the hatchback benchmarks in interior and age very well both in quality and styling. Love the video overall nice little hatch we never got them
    Here in NorthAmerica like most of the cool variants we get short changed.this side of the pond.

    My mk2 st had a dream science map with decat and the boost does drop considerably after 6k revs. The turbo is just too small. The trade off is full boost very early in the rev range and hardly any lag in between gear changes. For comparison it was a TINY bit slower than a stock mk2 RS. your tuned RS will be a good chunk quicker hence why u described the boost as being more savage in your RS

    Collins CP300. It’s near impossible to get the Mp275 upgrade it’s never in stock, I went for a bluefin remap in my mk3 FL ST, it’s good and bad, it’s got power for sure but I can’t really use it in lower gears, At higher gears say 3rd above it pulls really strong but can feel power power really drop off after about 5000rpm, problem is that it dumps huge torque in the low rpm and spins the wheels far too easily to the point where first gear is hopeless if your going to plant it.
