  • NEW VOLCANO IN MERADALIR. Reykjavík Grapevine editor in chief, Valur Grettisson, is on the scene with a full update of how the eruption is progressing. Read on for more information and links!
A new eruption started today (3rd of August, 2022) on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the location of last year’s volcano. The fissure is about 300 metres long and is estimated to be between 5 - 10 times more powerful than the previous volcano in Geldingadalur. It is located in a valley called Meradalir and is a bit further away from roads and settlements than last year. Read more updates on our website here: grapevine.is/tag/eruption/

What a spectacle ! The lava fountains and flows are absolutely mesmerizing. Thanks so much for the reminders and cautions about hiking in and proper gear. Ppl need to pay attention to the risks. Also the geology students! So cool to hear from them and I hope you will do a follow-up interview to hear what they've learned about this latest volcano. 🌋

Thank you for the unexpected volcanocast! Once again you are able to get crazy close to an erupting volcano. Some of the best footage I’ve ever seen of the early stages of a fissure eruption when there are lots of small vents erupting simultaneously.
