    TES2 Daggerfall was named after the capital of the province it was set in, so technically it is named after a location.

    • @TKS_Adam
      @TKS_Adam 7 років тому +6

      you mean the province of daggerfall? The one that shares it's name with the capital. Just like the other 2 main kingdoms in the area Sentinel and Wayrest.

    • @mortelli7
      @mortelli7 7 років тому +6

      Bruh, High Rock at this time was divided into several warring kingdoms who basically just paid taxes to the emperor, so calling them separate provinces isn't too far off.

    • @HQ_Default

      It's also worth mentioning that "Arena" was a nickname for Tamriel, because I guess there was a lot of dangerous fighting going on in the empire.

    • @scelonferdi
      @scelonferdi 6 років тому

      No the province really is High Rock Daggerfall, Wayrest and the other kingdoms are part of said province. The title province refers to the imperial organisation whilst the kingdoms are detemined by local politics.

      Haha yes, i love the creepy ones too. Specially fucking Glarthir. Who turned the game into a survival horror game. But for real, some quests had so much detail. If you went into Glarthir's house for an example (which wasn't a part of the quest anyway) you could find details of his insanity. A battleaxe next to his bed, books piled all around the house, notes of his paranoia in his basement and so on.

      It makes the whole world and the people feel alive. Like you're inside a society of some sort. Which is a really cozy immersion to walk into a city and feel like it is alive. Even if some dialogue is copy pasted. I like them having alot of different things to say. While in Skyrim their dialogue is minimal.

      1. *MANY SAY* that Oblivion is even better than Morrowind. But is it true? Or Morrowind is actually better than Oblivion? 2. People say that Skyrim is worse than Oblivion and Morrowind, but is it better than Daggerfall? Some say that Daggerfall is better than Skyrim.

    My unpopular opinion is that the Morrowind combat system wasn't "flawed"... in ways i actually think its the best combat system in TES. The problem with the combat system is the lack of animation to make you understand what is actually going on. IF they had actually animated a Miss animation, or a dodge animation to show what actually happens, the combat would be a lot better and the combat would be a lot more fast passed and epic to look at imo... I love that the game takes so many things into account. Stamina matters, skill matters...
    It makes sense that your a lvl 1 prisoner cant go up with your knife... hell even with a sword and swing it at a knight and expect
    to hit him... your untrained swings will be parried or dodge, and he will cut you open in 1-3 moves.. he has trained in his armor and
    weapons his whole life... IT also makes it possible for you to wear lesser tier armor and weapons and still win.. if your skill is
    high enough, as a blocked attack means no damage, and high enough agility and luck makes you dodge enemy attacks.
    I wish the future TES games would take back the Morrowind combat system... Add in parry and dodge animations to better visible relay what your "dice roll" (as the system is more in line with d&d than the "sword hits hitbox" mechanics) visible.

    The thing I have come to notice about The Elder Scrolls games is that each one excels in a different way. All you can say is "I like so this one more than that one" It comes down to a preference in style, gameplay and presentation. You can certainly say an element of one of the games is bad, but you can't say the entire game is terrible as a whole, and why people are so split about which one they like most.

    One thing I liked about Oblivion was the companions. They were all somewhat hidden and there was only like 5 so getting a good one felt really special. I remember rocking the adoring fan for a long time just so I could have someone help me out until I found the ex-blades guy and sealed the adoring fan in oblivion.

    One thing that people nowadays forget about Morrowind is that it didn't have scaling enemies, it had location based enemies. If you ventured into the wrong place, you'd get torn to pieces. This was removed in Oblivion and replaced by enemies that scale based on your level. It was also present in Skyrim. And in my opinion, it was a change for worse.
    All the awe and danger of adventuring was removed by having enemies that scale. No matter where you go in Skyrim, you'll never encounter anything that will completely annihilate you. And pretty much same is true for Oblivion.
    I remember when Morrowind came, and we picked it up with a friend of mine. He decided to "screw these quests, lets just go exploring" and so he went for a trip around the island, following the shoreline. Soon he encountered enemies that he could barely hit, taking dozens if not hundreds of hits to kill. He ran out of food and potions, and all his armor and weapons broke. He had to scrounge anything and everything just to survive. He had to run away from most encounters, because he just couldn't win. Any town, village or hut he found was a sorely needed sanctuary for rest and trade, and a place where he could breathe freely.
    Occasionally, he would find a cave or ruin that had some extremely powerful monsters, and he would sneak around them, run away from them or use all his might to kill them, and see what treasures these locations held. In some of the caves and ruins he found a few coins, some rusted swords and worn armor - nothing special - but in one of them... on some barely noticeable ledge that was just out of reach, there was a glimmer. My friend had to use that special levitation scroll he had been saving to be able to reach that ledge, and there he found a sword that was like no other.
    With that sword, and his harsh training, my friend was finally able to slay the powerful monsters that were tormenting him. The prey had become the predator. It still took a lot of work, and without adequate armor, it was still very dangerous, but now he didn't have to run away from every encounter anymore. Being able to hold his own on this harsh island, he was better suited to explore more dangerous places, with even better items in them. On his adventures he had become more shrewd and cunning, and in towns he could sweet talk the vendors to part with more gold. He was selling rarer and more expensive items, which meant he could buy better equipment. Even the climate had changed to an ashen wasteland, as if to mirror the tempered and weary mind of his character.
    Eventually, the land changed again, to a more friendly swamp, or some hearty forest, the enemies became easier and easier and even the townspeople were friendlier again. The journey was nearing its end. And when my friend finally reached the location where he had started his adventure, he came to a realization: nothing there could oppose his might. This journey had made him immensely strong. He had found weapons and armor others could only dream of. Unique, one of a kind items that no one else in this world had. He had honed his skills to their absolute best. He could swim as fast as others ran, he could jump on top of buildings, and he could cut beasts in half with one hit; beasts that not even five or ten men could kill.
    ...and this, kids, is the experience that Oblivion and Skyrim will never offer. It may be an experience that no game will offer ever again. And that is why Morrowind is the best Elder Scrolls game ever made.

      Too bad, first Fallout is quite a ride. But i do agree its a little hardcore to a new player. I still remember how i constantly kept dying in first few minutes of the game, getting literally slaughtered by radscorpions... It took me a couple deaths before i realized im not supposed to fight them, i just have to run and try to survive... That was a shocker. And thats what made fallout so exceptional. It was a gamd about survival in harsh, cruel and unforgiving world. The second Fallout was casual, the third one was a joke. I havent played new vegas yet though.

    • @MrKosobi
      @MrKosobi 6 років тому +3

      Tbh each of them have their pros and cons. Guilds were best in oblivion, immersion was the strongest in morrowind (it had its flaws though), and Skyrim has dragons. Also, Oblivion had dumb dialouges, Morrowind's world felt creepily dead, and Skyrim got rid of spell creation, which was the serie greatest strength. It's about what matters to you the most in gaming.

    • @MemoryDealer

      Possumlove, fair point, but shooting fire is the least fun you could have with spell creation in these games ;) My favorite spell to create was causing my target to flee for 5 seconds, and adding 100 speed and 100 athletics to them. Imagine fighting something, then casting this spell, and watching them run away in faster-than-light-cartoonish manner.
      Paralyze effect was also crazy fun in oblivion, due to hilarious rag-doll.
      Or imagine creating a fireball... the size of half of the city, causing every object with implemented physics engine fly in the sky. FUN
      That's what the spell creation was about - unrestricted, creative fun.

    11:00 This criticism about frozen conversations seems odd considering how fucked the unfrozen ones in Fallout 4 are - the latest Bethesda game that came out year before this review. Skyrim was ok and they somehow managed to downgrade it by giving player freedom to walk out of the conversation and making NPCs trigger relationship/quest-related dialogues few feet from the enemy. You don't even know how many times some important stuff has been interrupted for me, because of that. And it's not immersive and sometimes even gamebreaking. It's only fun in stupid reddit gifs or funny video compilations. I'd rather see NPCs frozen in the background.

      I agree with this, I much prefer having the game stop while I get important dialogue out of the way before fighting the dragon that's attack, rather than being like "conversation conversation conversati-" fight dragon, miss half the dialogue "do you want to help me with this quest?" "Oh I'm sorry I missed what you said due to a dragon".

    I disagree with time stopping when you speak being a bad thing.
    It helps to create a closed system to let triggers happen without outside interference. It also helped eliminate noise.
    And I notice you compared it to Fallout 4, rather than Skyrim, which showcased just why it needed to be stopped.
    In Skyrim, an NPC could initiate conversation with you, mid battle, getting you hacked to death by bandits as you fumble to stop the conversation.
    Also, sometimes you think about what to say next, not because your character's wondering, but you're wondering which response is in-character. I don't need for time to pass as the PLAYER is thinking. I also don't need to hear those damn idle lines either.
    I'd rather have a mediocre dialogue in stopped time with working triggers. Over a dialogue I can barely hear due to the car we shot while fighting ghouls just exploded, being interrupted by more ghouls, meaning the conversation stops, and then having to do it again, and THEN find out I haven't initiated the trigger, meaning I have to talk again or worst case scenario, use console commands.
    The problem with live dialogue, is that Bethesda RPGs aren't reliable enough.
    I use subtitles, not because I have trouble understanding English, but because I can't hear what they're saying over the battle music that's still playing full volume.

    • @TracinyaLachance
      @TracinyaLachance 7 років тому +6

      People complain that it ruins the immersion when time freezes, but yeah, it ruins the immersion just as much when dialogue is just paused mid-sentence, only for the NPC to start all over again as if you'd met for the first time all over again. So yes, I preferred Oblivion's way of doing it.

    • @Shushkin
      @Shushkin 3 роки тому

      But in Oblivion the main quest, albeit the main storyline, is just a small part of the game. You can never do it and still do so much more, or you can do it and do so much more after it. Compared to all dungeons, caves, ruins, Fighters Guild, Mage Guild, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, the Arena, and side quests (like all the shrines, for example), the main quest is nothing.

  • @equilibrium9829

    please, you have to ackknowledge the flawed progression-system, which was the core of Oblivions problem not the level scaling. most of the default classes were not suitable and if you don´t know the details of the level-skill system and played accordingly, it was very likely you end up getting weaker compared to your enemies. because you can level up with skills like lockpicking, barter or alchemy, which makes you higher level but not better in combat. especially endurance is very important to max out as early and quickly as you can ,because it determines the amount of HP you get.without that, you won´t last long in later game , and that´s especially difficult for mage and stealth-players.

Sure, it looks sort of surreal, but it's much better than, say, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., where I couldn't talk to a man properly cause we were out in the woods and effing mutant dogs just kept raiding us and I had to restart the dialog for like 5 times.

    My biggest complaint with Oblivion was the lack of cohesion between factions and characters. Every Guild and Quest is cut off from the rest of the game. Each guild has its own mini story, which is cool but Bethesda didn't bother to make any connections. For instance: The Mages guild are the experts on Daedra, but they are not even consulted in the main quest. Why doesn't Martin send you to Archmage Traven for help with the Mysterium Xarxes? Or if you are the Archmage why does he not consult you? Why can't the player Archmage call on his or her mages to help with Oblivion portals? This is just one of the many ways the game is completely disconnected. Morrowind did this much better, every faction had a purpose, and were connected to each other in some way.

    I enjoyed your take on the game! I could never get into this one because role-playing wise you really couldn't ignore the main quest which felt like such a chore with all the oblivion portals, but I enjoyed Morrowind and Skyrim.
    One bit I thought was ironic however was at around 8:15 when you mentioned Morrowind's combat not being interesting but the video is simply you chasing around people with the left click held. At least Morrowind's combat required a bit of strategy lol

      You could completely ignore it. Or shut the first and only one and save Kvatch and NEVER talk to Martin. No gates spring open after that as long as you don't talk to Martin at the refugee camp. Cyrodiil is completely safe and you get referred to as the Hero of Kvatch. You never ever need to do the main quest line and a lot of people never do it or don't on replays.

    Honestly, I love TES games for pure story/background lore. The games can be fun when questing or just exploring, but that doesn't work so much as you go back in time through the series. I feel like I would see TES universe as more of a storybook if not for its modding community, who work very hard, yet enthusiastically to improve the game in ways that the devs should have. (I.e. making combat more enjoyable, and adding more story that is not canon, yet is all lore friendly and would fit)

    Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game, but after playing it to the point where there was little else left to do, I still wanted new adventures and bought Oblivion for dirt cheap. Best $11 I ever invested, because I played it equally as much as Skyrim. It took some getting used to going backwards in a series, but I agree, the game felt much better in a lot of ways. Funny you mention the outdoors scenery of Oblivion as sub par compared to Morrowind, but even though the graphics weren't as refined as Skyrim, I thought Oblivion with it's Cyrodil map offered more types of scenery than Skyrim. Skyrim felt like an epic Norse quest whereas Oblivion felt more like the Lord of the Rings. I felt Skyrim's main quest was good, especially traveling to Sovngarde, but the battle of Mehrunes seemed more urgent, like it really mattered. When you finish the main quest in Skyrim NPCs are like "meh" to you, but after finishing the main quest in Oblivion, NPCs call you the Champion of Cyrodil, etc. Like you actually did something. Plus, you close all the gates up in Oblivion, whereas in Skyrim, dragons still pop up wherever they want even after the quest.

  • @stewb1409
    @stewb1409 7 років тому +4

    Firstly - I loved Morrowind/Oblivion and Skyrim, but I do disagree with you on the combat in Oblivion. For me it felt backwards - At low level everything is easy (Saving all the guards in Kvatch at level 1 is far easier than Level 40, mainly because the guards had static levels and the daedra levelled with you) and when you get high level, then every single enemy become nothing but a HP tank. The opposite is true in Morrowind - you start off weak and easy to be killed by even a mudcrab, but by the end you become so overpowered that practically nothing kills you (Unless you allow yourself to get surround and stun locked :P). Just my own personal opinion though - I prefer starting weak and training my skills to become strong rather than Oblivion's "Oh hey, did you level up? Let's double all the enemy HP!".. Yeah o.k that an exaggeration, but it gets t he point across :P

    • @SarahAndreaRoycesChannel
      @SarahAndreaRoycesChannel 7 років тому +2

      And in Skyrim you have to be careful what you do. Concentrate on very few things (like only bow, sneaking and light armour) and you're overpowered pretty fast, but try everything you can get your hand on, and your enemies will be the overpowered ones, because they seem to count agains the sum of your experience.
      First Bethesda game I played that had a fun experience system was Fallout 4, but don't tell the purists.

    The whole experience of Morrowind to me is just much more fun than the other two,
    Also it feels like Morrowind has just a lot more to offer, almost feels like I am playing multiple games because of how different some aspects and areas feel compared to each other, while I skyrim and Oblivion everything sort of feels (and looks) the same.

    I’m a huge fan of Morrowind, Oblivion AND Skyrim. I think each game did something better than the other two, and of course something not quite as well as the others.
    Morrowind had the best item diversity (weapons, potions, spells, etc.). Oblivion had the best quests (IMO). Skyrim had the best user interface, and probably the most balanced encounters in terms of loot/enemy level relative to your own, too.
    This is to name only a few things; there are obviously many more things that each game did better than the other installments.

    My problem with all the Elder Scrolls games (and indeed Fallout since Bethesda took over) is that if you feel the need to put in a fast travel system into your game so the player doesn't get bored travelling the map, then there isn't enough interesting stuff in the map.
