      What are the power requirements of the new camera? Would be interesting to compare it to miniLF and Alexa35

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar 9 місяців тому +1

      @@DollyRanch the regular V-Raptor VV uses 65-75 Watts, and I imagine the new one will be similar, as most of the hardware is simply ported over from the original model. This is also similar to the Alexa Mini LF, each operates at around 65-75 Watts. The Alexa 35 uses at least 50% more power, and can even peak at 135 Watts according to ARRI. Note that the Alexa 35 also requires 24v batteries. Mini LF works with 14v or 24v, and V-Raptor uses 14v.

      @@nick_salazar if they've really got it running at the same power level as the original, that's some feat!

      @@DollyRanch I imagine that EH mode increases the power draw compared to normal shooting, but I can't imagine it's a huge difference. The camera is still built to run off 14v batteries after all.

    14:26 as a current owner/operator of an array of systems, including the Monstro 8K VV, Ranger Gemini, Arri Amira, Alexa Plus 4:3, Sony CineAlta F55, FX6 and FX3, I would argue that Red is guilty of this too. They’ve been pumping out DSMC3 bodies, and variations, as quickly as the next top manufacturer (minus Arri, with their Alexa 35 camera being their newest camera in like forever). But RED has released at least 9 camera variations (Komodo, Komodo-X, V-Raptor S35 Rhino Edition, V-Raptor S35, V-Raptor S35 XL, V-Raptor, V-Raptor-X, V-Raptor XL, and V-Raptor XL-X… and this is not including the stormtrooper editions of the aforementioned, which I’m not going to include in this count) over the course of the last couple of years. I’d say they’re neck and neck with Sony, if not more aggressive on their release cycles. And they definitely take the crown on releases for dedicated cinema cameras. Additionally, RED UA-cam influencers are always, and I mean always, praising the next iteration, with most of them not hesitating to upgrade to the latest release. So if Sony expects that of users as you claim here, then I’d say the RED team definitely expects the same result with their user base. ;-)
    Don’t get me wrong, more options and the latest tech is always great for us consumers, as it forces innovation; but it’s hard to invest further into a system where it depreciates in value faster than any other camera manufacturer out there. I’d be a bit peeved if I purchased a V-Raptor in December, and now have to shell out another $12.5k for a sensor and body upgrade (when the two cams differ by $5k; sure, toss the service team another $2k or so for their time and some profit for the swap / labor; but $12.5k for upgrading your existing system is wild). And don’t get me started on charging $1200+ for DSMC3 EVF bracket.
    That’s why I’m sticking with my DSMC2 Monstro and Ranger Gemini, as I won’t toss any further $$ into the DSMC3 money pit.
    Outside of that, the V-Raptor-X is an incredible piece of tech / innovation for sure, and great for the small and niche market of virtual production!

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  9 місяців тому

      DSMC2 has a lot to offer and MONSTRO is still one of my all time favorite sensors.

    • @SchroederPeanuts
      @SchroederPeanuts 9 місяців тому

      That’s why I think owner/operators should get the camera that best fits their needs and rent everything else as needed. However, I am concerned about hanging on to the DSMC2 generation for too long as support wanes considering all the proprietary components required for operation.

    • @InfamousStar1
      @InfamousStar1 9 місяців тому

      @@SchroederPeanutsyeah, I’ve considered offloading my Monstro and Ranger Gemini to get out of DSMC2 before RED support expires for them in the next couple of years; but they’re still in immaculate physical and working condition without any issues, and the resale value on them now is horrendous, lol. Like 1/5th the price as they were brand new just a mere couple of years ago (and that’s best case scenario). At that price point, and since they can still easily hang with the overall image quality coming out of the current DSMC3 offerings, I think I’d rather drive them into the ground (so to speak), and keep them as glorified paperweights on a shelf in the office once they no longer work / get retired. ;-)
      It’s just hard to reinvest back into a system that depreciates so shockingly fast, especially with how fast they’re pumping out newer revisions.
      Again, it’s an amazing piece of innovation / tech, and I’ve shot on RED for many years (in addition to ARRI and Sony) - bravo to RED! 👏🏼
      But once I dwindle out of my DSMC2 offerings, I think I’ll rent any REDs, as needed / if requested by clients, going forward.
      On the other hand, I will be adding the Sony Burano to the arsenal, as there will be a ton more client work requesting that type of l system than I’ve had with owning RED systems.

    I'm not about red. Not about about how they lock some of their eco system and how they use their raw patent to limit other camera companies. Crazy that you can patent something like that. But how on earth did they beat sony to this, and apparently with a better implementation? Sony is a much bigger company that produces some of the most advanced sensors. Kudos to them for that! I always wondered why dual gain technology hadn't made it to full frame and photography since c300 and c70. With global shutter and processor improvements, we are due for improved dynamic range. Thanks red for doing it.

    • @definingslawek4731
      @definingslawek4731 9 місяців тому

      Because they didn't beat sony to this. A major silicon company, Forza silicon, did. Red does not make camera sensors, they just implement them, there's nothing wrong with that, nikon, fuji and panasonic mostly do this too. Sensor design and manufacturing is literal space age technology, the CMOS sensor was invented in NASA's JPL for the sole purpose of making cameras in spacecraft smaller.

    Having the option to pay for just the sensor upgrade is great, I agree with you! But I'd add as nuance regarding the sony part, you could just buy the new body from sony like 5 times before you'd get to the price of 1 red, it's not like they're releasing a new 20 thousand dollar cinema camera every few months.

    And now you know why RF 85L or RF 28-70L covers bigger image circle than fullframe ;) BTW hybrid shooting refers to shooting that most people think snd refer to is stills and video. Not different type of video shooting production. Beside that 100% agreed.

    I wonder if Forza silicon (the company that makes red sensors) have an exclusivity agreement with red or what, considering we don't see them on any other player in the market.
    Interesting little tidbit, red lied so much about making their own sensors in house (a weird thing to lie about cause no one would care if they didn't make them,) that the inventor of CMOS sensor technology Dr Fossum (he invented the technology at NASA's JetPropolusionLabratory, to make cameras for spaceships smaller) threw a tiny bit of shade at them saying he never did hear of a sensor designer/ engineer who worked at red.

    • @carlosq00
      @carlosq00  9 місяців тому

      base ISO is how you choose to expose because of R3D, the sensor has it's highlight and dark limits and the ISO shifts the entire exposure within those two points.
      I'll be shooting low light with it this weekend and will follow up.
