Macintoshmani12. the thing is I dont think it has much to do with them being a foreign manufacturer. Yes Harley handled it well and they certainly had the advantage that their customer base likely gave zero fuks, but even then it would have been a juicy story if the had perhaps responded differently. VWs actions were covered by every automotive rag and blog probably more thoroughly than the main stream media and in that setting VW has long been a favorite brand, from the GTIs of the last 30 years to the air coold machines and the TDIs them selves. I dont think that a bunch of people that have often favored VW over all domestics and often the japanese would be unduly harsh on them out of nationalistic pride all of a sudden. VWs indiscretions became a big deal for the same reason Bill Clintons did, both thought they could bullshit us about it with barely any effort and we collectively took offense.
Same here in the states, really. I sell VWs for a living and nobody really cares. I've heard of friends of customers that complain about it, but honestly VW is a repeat customer business that relies on people that already love VWs. I've actually gotten more complaints from people that were upset that they couldn't get a brand new diesel since their diesel got them from El Paso to San Diego on a single tank of fuel (allegedly). The only reason people are doing the buyback thing, according to all my customers, is because they're getting $15-$20k for base model cars that are up to 5 years old.
EU emissions testing favors diesels, anyhow. Between being easier to drive (torque) when a manual (almost all cars in Europe), more torque per liter of displacement (great for acceleration and low speed, which is almost everywhere over there), and better fuel economy, diesel cars are an easy sell.
Hammer, I know exactly where you're coming from. But I was just speaking on behalf of the majority of my customers and the experiences I have selling them.
I like how if a car fails to meet EPA emission standards, people act like the car pumps out smog like a steel and coal factory from the turn of the century.
When this all came out, I wondered how much crap a Diesel gate VW puts out compared to all the smoke belching Diesel pickup trucks and how many TDIs are on American roads compared to the aforementioned smoke belching Diesel pickup trucks. Seems like there would have been a better solution.
BB2009LZ all modern diesels have to pass emissions it's the law. Any diesel 2006 or older is except from emissions so you can roll coal all you want in a VW or powerstroke.
idontcare80 Sure, but I don't think a car made in 2008 is that much dirtier than a car made in 2015, but we are lead to believe if a car made today doesn't meet 2017 standards it's a coal burning power plant. When it would have been fine 3 years prior. Over regulation of the car safety and pollution standards are killing cars.
Diesels are actually under-regulated, and gasoline vehicles have no trouble meeting current emissions standards. Diesels are so under-regulated that some cites are considering banning them from their roads because those cars are creating such serious smog issues.
Brandon Umagat This is how knowledge is passed. UA-cam .no, Mr. Regular is the head of education. see, we get history, English, science of sorts, partial math, psychology, etc. You get the whole spectrum. Mr. Regular for president
I love my updated 2014 Jetta TDI but I wouldn't describe it as zippy. Compared to my old 2003 it accelerates like a train. Turbo lag so bad you step on the pedal and then go make a pot of coffee. But once it spools up it will actually pull like a train. Honestly it's the first car I've driven that I thought would be better with an automatic :(
Lets not forget GM/chevy death mobiles or the takata bombs. lets just all pick on the foreign car as if its the foreign exchange student with a thick accent as bro joe harley and chevy owners point down on him and laugh at him while BMW and Mercedes diesels stand back not defending him knowing they have the same coming to them soon.
According to an article I read, they didn't crush the cars after all. They reprogrammed the computers to meet correct emissions standards and are now currently reselling them through volkswagen as refurbished cars with new warranties
at9670 More to the point, its ONLY a thing in the USA... And how many terrible, insanely inefficient V8 cars have graced the roads in the USA over the years? Hypocrites.
Si1983h yeah i can't understand sometimes these sort of things. but many nationa have problems. what i don't like about my country is the luxury tax, every car that has more than 185kw is a luxury car for the italian government and you have to pay mad money for it. i mean, a new 60k bmw 730d pays less than an old 5k mazda 6 mps? that's fucked.
You're missing the point--this was about deception. There was even a test by Motor Trend between a 2005 VW Jetta TDI and a Toyota Prius, in which the Jetta won because it got similar MPG, and still almost zero emissions compared to the Prius. Now come to find out that isn't true. That's the issue--the perpetuation of a line that wasn't accurate.
No, coal is used worldwide and America isn't the number one energy producer using coal even as a first world country. That honor goes to Poland at a whopping 83%!! However if you say Poland isn't good enough for you than try Australia, Israel, Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, and South Korea who all use more coal than the US. Denmark, Japan, and the Netherlands are all in the same ballpark as America using between 30-39% of their energy production through coal. Get your facts straight before making unsubstantiated claims based on falsehoods. These figures are from the World Bank.
Demand in the US,China, and some Western Euro countries is declining--in favor of cheaper (for the moment)natural gas. Southeast Asia and India still are big coal users. From International Energy Information Administration.
My dad had a 2013 Jetta TDI. I drove it for just over 6 months and it was a great car. The low end torque was amazing. We ended up selling it back to Volkswagen and getting a 2.5L Beetle (mine) and a 2.3L Mustang (his). Part of the reason for selling it back was that we got more money than the car was worth.
Do people really care about dieselgate? The Golf mk7 was the most sold car here 65% percent got the diesel. I couldn't care less about the dieselgate when I want a good car.
Dieselgate is insane they are abviously just trying to regulate companies to death or china with impossible bullshit rules so obviously everyone cheats on those tests.
People who like to shit on foreign manufacturers for being foreign care about dieselgate. In reality I think it came out later than most diesel car manufacturers can't meet emissions standards in regular driving circumstances.
Insiainutorr T. how is other manufacturers produce vehicles that pass legitimately? no that I dont disagree that the laws are heavy handed and have negatively effected the market, I believe we were very close to diesels become viable in america until DEF became a thing, but it still doesnt change VWs culpability for their actions. the government is not as draconian as you may think. VW could have likely appealed for an acception, this is actually fairly common and they would have had a strong case but they didnt go that route. they also arguably made wrong choices after the story broke.
It has been estimated that the extra emissions from Dieselgate has caused a minimum of 106 deaths in the U.S. www.nytimes.com/2015/09/29/upshot/how-many-deaths-did-volkswagens-deception-cause-in-us.html?_r=0 Worldwide, especially Europe (because of the enormous number of vws here) the numbers are probably higher, I would think. It's an extremely cynical move from VW, especially concidering they willingly did it to save money from R&D
Roman, after the last time i posted about your songs, my approach has cahnged, i really love listening to them now, you are an awesome and whitty writer!
Not really, VW is selling all the fixed cars so there are thousands on the market right now. You can get a great deal on them and they all have extended warranties up to 4 years from the time of fix.
this is the 2.0l TDI not the best engine, specially the ones from the beginning of the production in 2006... The older 1.9l TDI were great engines, and The "TD" were even better, but less powerful.
You don't see a lot of Pig-nose Passats in the States nowadays, so the good old TD is quite irrelevant now. However, those fucking Germans... they've always known their shit, I'll give you that.
Endroo Or even the old 1.6TD(I'm not sure if they had turbo), great engines that run for ever, I've heard that VW is making New 1.6TDi, but I can't really tell anything about it because I haven't drive one of those yet.
Poland Garage The 1.6 TDI is nothing compared to the 1.2 TDI made especially for the Lupo 3L. Ridiculously small and fragile! Downsizing is like the ebola of reliability.
Good thing here in the land of Canada, I can drive my 1996 VW Jetta TDI dumping fuel out of the exhaust like it's no body's business, but my buddy's newer Jetta got recalled. Because it also had mechanical factory defects.
I've watched a bunch of other videos if this is a car I could daily and find reliable for a while. Every other video has just told me what every car review wants to tell you. That everything works great. You seem pretty damn honest and I love it. Keep up the good work.
He won't scrap it. VW will. As part of the agreement they can't resell the cars they're being forced to buy back in other markets where there is less/no emissions standards.
I have a 2010 VW JSW TDI Diesel. I bought it end of 2011. It has 100,000 miles. I had the emission mod done, and collected $1000 in good faith money, $5000 in mod money and $350 from Bosh. PLUS I got 40K and 4 year extended warranty on the drive train and engine systems (fuel, emission). KEEPING IT FOREVER... Launch with the torque will put a smile on your face everything. Fit, finish, amendments, handling are all excellent.
As a proud owner of a 2015 TDI, I have to say it breaks my heart VW is buying it back. It DOES pull when you step on the gas, never gets stuck in the snow and never has anything broken down. With an exception of a lack of an aux jack (you have to use some weird ass proprietary parallel port to connect you devices wired). The thing did truck along consistently no matter what...fuck diesel gate and goddamn EPA bureaucrats. Don't tell me my TDI pollutes more than your fucking 99 Dually Ram lifted with Rockstar rims, detached catalytic converter and NUTS off the hitch. Fucking bullshit
I've got a GTI and from the first day I've wanted you to come out and review it. I love all the videos you make and it just been one of those dreams just to see what your opinion would be on the GTI.
I absolutely love this car. SUPER fuel efficient, and it is super reliable. I get around 300-321 miles PER TANK. I know its not going to possibly die on me by pushing the pedal like some 1990-2000 Toyota Camrys can. Dieselgate was super unfortunate for VW, but they fixed it, and all is well. They make super reliable, good looking, and fun cars to drive.
Fiat did the same in Brazil with the FIASA engine in the early 90s. EFI was just starting over here, so the cheat was in the Electronic ignition box. They recognized the emissions routine and changed timing, this way they didn't have to use cats.
Your channel is right up there with Roadkill and Mighty Car Mods as far as car-related content on UA-cam is concerned. Kudos for using a Radiohead song as well!
I wanted a TDI for the fuel economy, low-end torque and longevity; but settled for a '15 Golf 2.0 TSI. Surprisingly i get upwards of 45MPG on the highway and 35MPG mixed city/hwy. That's good enough for me.
I had a 2013 Jetta TDI with TSW 19" wheels lowered with H&R coil overs. Perfect road trip car and daily driver. Very few visits to fuel up. I miss that car.
Thanks for doing videos like these... seriously i enjoy evert one of them!! You are the only one that says what we all think about cars. LONG LIVE RCR!
Roman! Your best work so far. Outstanding juxtaposition of Radiohead's Di(e)s(el)topian sound with dieselgate causing "all hell to break loose" for VW.
if you want the cash settlement to make up part of the difference of the extra money you payed for the special engine that doesn't work then you have to get your car de-tuned as part of the deal. i don't think local has anything to do with it because the class action lawsuit was a blanket thing. or at least that's what i gathered from the paperwork.
I still don't now what all the problem was with VW, sure, Screw the EPA, The car ran quite efficiently though, Near 50 to the gallon and driveable?, Sounds OK to me.
the issue is the emissions not the mileage. modern engines need to metaphorically hold their breath to make sure that the fuel gets burned clean. this wastes power on clean burning and not pushing your car forward, decreasing mileage. good for the environment... bad for your wallet.
AzuriteT3 True enough, Just another way of cheating the system, Slightly better than the bloody awful exhaust port air injection to dilute the exhaust gasses, seems odd that everyone was cool with that. J.
Got a 2011 sportwagen and a 2015 golf, both manual tdi's, great cars and if you tune them a tick they really do perform pretty well without sacrificing mileage.
I have a '13 Jetta TDi, I love it. It's nice driving it here in CA where the emissions are so strict. The torque is fun and it goes up all the hills with ease. I bought it after my last car crapped out and I needed something with really good mileage since my job is 50% driving. Idgaf about Dieselgate, I'm happier with my Jetta than I ever would be with ANY hybrid/EV.
When I read the title first up until almost the end of the video I thought I´m watching a review of a Golf GTI, which confused me because of the 140 bhp, the very plain look and you not being all that impressed with it. Then it clicked in my mind not just because of all the diesel gate explanation (there is a GTD, which essentially is a diesel GTI). Speaking of which, since the diesel gate has been exposed Mercedes, Peugeot and if I remember correctly also Mitsubishi were accused of similar behavior but somehow as you said only VW received all the heat. At least that´s what I read and a car appraiser told me. Here in Germany they just updated most cars or changed something on the diesel filters, most people who were affected aren´t even getting a refund but there are also lawsuits on the way.
in the UK when dieselgate came out it didn't really make a difference, their tax became like £50 more a year or something. they continued to sell just as many diesels as well.
i own a 2014 passat TDI that was bought back and “fixed” back in 2019. Got it for $10,000 with only 80k miles on it. It’s still fun to drive and i get 45+ mpg on the highway.
Volkswagen cheated and got caught. No arguments from me there. BUT... I find it funny when people who drive gas-guzzling pickups and SUVs or thirsty sports cars (and regularly track them) slam VW and make claims that "VW is and has harmed the environment" with these diesels. Um, really? And your choice of vehicle doesn't? I really want to know what those lawyers and senators drive who are slamming VW. A big fat luxury sedan? A gas-guzzling Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe? Yeah, talk about doing something for the environment... The sad fact of the matter is that all cars pollute. And it's not only the emissions. The whole production process of a car consumes energy and materials - which also create pollution.
Christian W Dieselgate isnt about co2, it's about nox and all the other emissions besides co2 that are poisonous for humans. That's why diesels are getting banned in concentrated areas like cities in Europe.
It doesn't matter that there are cars with bigger engines drinking more fuel, despite this they still don't make as many emmisions as the dieselgate Volkswagens.
VW were at a competitive advantage as rival manufactures were not able to sell small capacity diesel cars in the US *at all* (as it was impossible to do so cost effectively if actually complying with the emissions regulations).
I did hear about other manufacturers skirting emissions regulations. If so many do it, does this mean that the regulations are unrealistic? I have a 2003 Golf TDI. It's pre-dieselgate and exempt from emissions. It's true, after 3k rpm there is nothing left. Only a little more vibration and black smoke.
hell no, gas/petrol cars may produce more co2 but diesel is way worse in other aspects like fine particles (?). electric cars are a different story altogether, if you run them off of renewable sources they don't produce any emmissions (duh). Yet you have to account for manufacturing emmissions as well, the lithium batteries for example are not all that clean in production. I don't have any hard data on the whole internal combustion vs electric thing so I can't say what's worse or how long it would take to a point where the extra pollution from the battery is equal to the pollution produced by day to day use of gas or diesel cars. I can say one thing though, electric cars will have to replace internal combustion eventually, if only because regular fuels become too expensive.
Because there is next to 0 infrastructure for hydrogen, while there is already a very widespread electricity infrastructure. One of the big reasons for phasing out petrol and diesel is city smog. Even if you are using coal to power them you are going to be moving the fume generation somewhere where it impacts less (or no) people. Thus making city air much cleaner and reducing the amount of related health issues.
Had a mk 6 2.0 tdi with stage 1 tune. (186hp and 420nm) Takes 7 seconds to hit 100kph. Pulled like a truck, and with the commonrail-engine and updated dsg, it was reliable, practical and dare i say it fun. One of the Best cars ive had.
I would bet $ that 2.0 tdi is cleaner than half of the big shitty V8 MOTORS that are still sold today. Screw EPA and FORD for pulling this crap. Diesel is the future and for a daily its a perfect combination .
I drive a Golf 7 TDI and I absolutely love it. As a German, Dieselgate left a really sour taste in my mouth cause of the permanent damage it did to out car industry's credibility and the fact that Diesel suddenly became way more expensive. I average about 4.4 liters per 100km on my daily commute and I have enough power to cruise at 180kph on the autobahn for hours on end. I never want to drive anything but a diesel ever again. Sad that that the age of internal combustion is coming to an end
My driving school here in Germany had a 2015 Golf TDI. Its a boring but great car. It is easy to drive, is economic and the build quality is great for a compact. The only thing that pisses me off is that the German government now HELPS Volkswagen instead of giving them a penalty. The politicians want to ban diesel cars from cities as a response to dieselgate. The result will be that people will have to buy new cars. That will show them, amirite?
Tesla was given money by the Gov for being "green." if he was making normal cars he would never get off the ground. Ask Mr.Delorean how that went. He needed drug money and to bum off of Lotus
Sure sounds good in theory, but as soon as you gassed up and drove that wonderful '69 Camaro you'd be putting out a 1000 times more emissions than the Tesla!
I had a Passat TDI when that broke. It was a fun car! Surprisingly quick for a Diesel! They bought it back for more than I owed. It was a sad day. The fuel mileage was amazing, too!
Took a 2012 Jetta TDI from Palm Springs - San Francisco (a bit over 500miles one way) and got ~53mpg going 80-85mph on the I-5. I seriously spent $150 round trip on gas, snacks, and coffee. Also brought 2 friends with me. The drive was fun with of DSG and the endless torque from the TDI. Great car, just sucks that they had compromise emissions for efficiency and power.

I love the 6.9L IDI diesel.
+ add to that the arbitrary deviations from the UNECE recommendations on car regulations that pretty much the rest of the world is conforming to.
Just like the gun laws. Everything fun you could make in a machine shop over the course of 48 hours is illegal. Does fuck-all.

Be serious:))) diesel is for tractors...
How many VW tuners found that inspection loop hole and didnt rat? Thats solidarity.
Half the time tuners are cutting out all the stupid emissions crap anyway especially if they live in a place where they don't inspect vehicles
Probably none. Since the emissions cheating software activates when the rear wheels are turning.. they would have been disappointed with their dyno runs but their street performance would have improved.
@@Bartonovich52 lol. Rear?
The cheat software was buried deep in the code and given a misleading file name.

Millions of cars not meeting emissions standards can pump out smog on par with factories from the turn of the century.
idontcare80 Sure, but I don't think a car made in 2008 is that much dirtier than a car made in 2015, but we are lead to believe if a car made today doesn't meet 2017 standards it's a coal burning power plant.
Your pencil cheating method is amazing
I wish I knew about that one lol

Love my 2015 Golf TDI. It has the software flash for the emissions update. Runs great! 48mpg frequently, zippy, tons of torque. Best car I've owned.

My day was absolutely shit.. You know one of the days that just gets worse and worse. But this brightened up my day. Greetings from Deutschland.
so why is he scrapping the car? How does dieselgate make it less of a daily driver?
VW has to buy the TDIs back from owners. Some tried to scrap their vehicles and then sell it back to VW. Dick move, hasn't worked.
SilverSpade92 He can't get it to pass smog any more
all hail glorious government
diesel cars are exempt from emissions testing in PA. I thought it was because the buyback was greater than the value of the car making it a no-brainer
Yet some how it just makes me want one more.
According to an article I read, they didn't crush the cars after all. They reprogrammed the computers to meet correct emissions standards and are now currently reselling them through volkswagen as refurbished cars with new warranties
isn't running coal a thing in USA?
at9670 More to the point, its ONLY a thing in the USA...
Detroit diesel, freight liner and Cat all cheated as well. Several yrs ago. A few million in fines. And who ever heard about it? Very few
VW could have likely appealed for an acception, this is actually fairly common and they would have had a strong case but they didnt go that route. they also arguably made wrong choices after the story broke.
diesel gate is a direct result of draconian emission laws that favor less efficient gasoline engines over diesels. so no I don't give a shit
It has been estimated that the extra emissions from Dieselgate has caused a minimum of 106 deaths in the U.S. www.nytimes.com/2015/09/29/upshot/how-many-deaths-did-volkswagens-deception-cause-in-us.html?_r=0
Worldwide, especially Europe (because of the enormous number of vws here) the numbers are probably higher, I would think.
It's an extremely cynical move from VW, especially concidering they willingly did it to save money from R&D
finally got around to watching this one and roman closes the tdi obituary with exit music, well done sir.
Roman, after the last time i posted about your songs, my approach has cahnged, i really love listening to them now, you are an awesome and whitty writer!
Got mine to 60 mpg once actually. Had huge fun throwing it around California twisties. Want to keep mine forever too. Nice review.
I love that you made this (comparably) a completely standard review for a completely standard car.
someone needs to keep a tdi. in like 50 years wouldn't these be super rare?

@@_nomote_ that's a stupid idea the market is flooded with buy backs now lol
Nathen M I ended up just getting a mk6 gti.
Not really, VW is selling all the fixed cars so there are thousands on the market right now. You can get a great deal on them and they all have extended warranties up to 4 years from the time of fix.
I am going to, especially as my first car
this is the 2.0l TDI not the best engine, specially the ones from the beginning of the production in 2006...
I had the 2.0 SDI in a caddy.
Worst diesel ever.
Endroo Oh that's right! I completely forgot about the 1.2l In the Lupo... it's a joke...

That Radiohead song parody was pretty good though
I've watched a bunch of other videos if this is a car I could daily and find reliable for a while. Every other video has just told me what every car review wants to tell you. That everything works great. You seem pretty damn honest and I love it. Keep up the good work.
Why would he scrap a perfectly good car? Sure it lied about its emissions but that doesn't make it any less of a capable car.
Paul Hojda It will never pass emissions ever again.
if you don't have the emissions sticker on your plate, you're gonna have a bad time.
He won't scrap it. VW will.
As part of the agreement they can't resell the cars they're being forced to buy back in other markets where there is less/no emissions standards.
yan-Deriction there is an emissions sticker that goes on the license plate? I've never seen these.
ok fair enough
just as i finish watching all of your reviews you upload another one

Late night early regular car reviews baby!
Fucking bullshit
are you being forced to sell it back, dont you have the option to get it retuned at VW's expense, and if so just do that
Thanks for mentioning that.....I'll look into it
Shagadelic Why not just drive it as it is?

AND Radiohead at the end.
Roman killed it on this one. 👌
I find it surprising there are so few. But I am from Germany, and our streets are full of them. (Makes me pretty proud actually.)
Was that exit music (for a film), at the end?
Fiat did the same in Brazil with the FIASA engine in the early 90s. EFI was just starting over here, so the cheat was in the Electronic ignition box. They recognized the emissions routine and changed timing, this way they didn't have to use cats.
Your channel is right up there with Roadkill and Mighty Car Mods as far as car-related content on UA-cam is concerned.
Kudos for using a Radiohead song as well!
I saw one of these yesterday and was like "Mr. Regular should review that." Now I'm convinced that I made this review happen.
As a diehard Radiohead fan, the outro song is on point
I wanted a TDI for the fuel economy, low-end torque and longevity; but settled for a '15 Golf 2.0 TSI. Surprisingly i get upwards of 45MPG on the highway and 35MPG mixed city/hwy.
That's good enough for me.
Nice video, esp. love the ending with the Radiohead "Exit Music (for a film)" parody. Well done!
I had a 2013 Jetta TDI with TSW 19" wheels lowered with H&R coil overs. Perfect road trip car and daily driver. Very few visits to fuel up. I miss that car.
I still want to know if dieselgate is the reason why VW isn't in Forza Horizon 3
We have VW over in Gran Turismo land so that may be why? I don't know
Thanks for doing videos like these... seriously i enjoy evert one of them!! You are the only one that says what we all think about cars.

The best and most haunting Roman song ever at the end. Ever.
it's "Exit Music" from Radiohead
That was classic Radiohead right there
Radical AM Wait till you see when it's used in Black Mirror.

Exit Music (for a car)
Roman! Your best work so far. Outstanding juxtaposition of Radiohead's Di(e)s(el)topian sound with dieselgate causing "all hell to break loose" for VW.
maybe I missed it, but why is it going to be crushed or parted?
because the de-tune that makes the car pass emissions also makes it hot crap.
What if you live in a place that doesn't do emissions tho?
but still why is it being destroyed, is it now worthless? Is VW corp recommending or somehow driving this action?
if you want the cash settlement to make up part of the difference of the extra money you payed for the special engine that doesn't work then you have to get your car de-tuned as part of the deal. i don't think local has anything to do with it because the class action lawsuit was a blanket thing. or at least that's what i gathered from the paperwork.
i'm not sure why he would destroy the car. maybe insurance. parting it out makes more sense to me though since no one wants to buy them... apparently.
Best part about insomnia - 4am Monday mornings with Mr. Regular!
I liked the parody of Radio Head's Exit Music (For a Film)
In Europe, this car is the most regular car you can regular when you regular to regular.
That's the greatest summary of a car I've ever heard in my entire life.
I thought i couldnt love RCR anymore but then you review my dad's DD. And then Exit music (for a film) at the end. Will you marry me?
Got a 2011 sportwagen and a 2015 golf, both manual tdi's, great cars and if you tune them a tick they really do perform pretty well without sacrificing mileage.
110 students found a new way to cheat after this video :)

I think Mr regular just helped me pass my classes
I have a '13 Jetta TDi, I love it. It's nice driving it here in CA where the emissions are so strict. The torque is fun and it goes up all the hills with ease. I bought it after my last car crapped out and I needed something with really good mileage since my job is 50% driving.
Idgaf about Dieselgate, I'm happier with my Jetta than I ever would be with ANY hybrid/EV.
Brilliant Radiohead song choice at the end. I'd love to hear a whole song of it.
It’s still fun to drive and i get 45+ mpg on the highway.
notification squad !
I still have my 2003 Golf TDI and love it. It's the most economical car I will probably ever own and is still fun to drive.
*breathes in*
...
...
...
AMERICAAAAAAAA FUCK YEAH
What does the EPA have against diesel cars anyway? They're much better for the environment than gas and electric cars!
hell no, gas/petrol cars may produce more co2 but diesel is way worse in other aspects like fine particles (?). electric cars are a different story altogether, if you run them off of renewable sources they don't produce any emmissions (duh).
Walther White - Why not have IC engines run on hydrogen? All that would come out of the exhaust is water vapor.
Thus making city air much cleaner and reducing the amount of related health issues.
aljowen - Why not update our infrastructure for hydrogen?
Money, money, money. No one wants to spend on it.

I'd still buy it
This car is like THE student driving car in The Netherlands. Such a great car to learn in.
I would bet $ that 2.0 tdi is cleaner than half of the big shitty V8 MOTORS that are still sold today. Screw EPA and FORD for pulling this crap. Diesel is the future and for a daily its a perfect combination .
What, like the V8s that VW themselves sell in Passat, Phaeton and Touareg (plus Audi models too)? Pot, kettle, black!?

That will show them, amirite?
i really want to buy a diesel golf

walperstyle sadly the government only knows how to do one thing. That's to just be completely disappointed most of the time
You have a better chance of starting your own car company if they were to be electric.
That's exactly why there have absolutely no new car companies in the last few years, right?
Tesla was given money by the Gov for being "green." if he was making normal cars he would never get off the ground. Ask Mr.Delorean how that went. He needed drug money and to bum off of Lotus
Sure sounds good in theory, but as soon as you gassed up and drove that wonderful '69 Camaro you'd be putting out a 1000 times more emissions than the Tesla!
I had a Passat TDI when that broke. It was a fun car! Surprisingly quick for a Diesel! They bought it back for more than I owed. It was a sad day. The fuel mileage was amazing, too!
Fortunately in Europe consumers tend not to bother about Dieselgate.
