2 years running and still my favorite band of all time. I love how you can love all of these songs individually on the record but then when you hear Rob jamming on top of them live it still brings a tear to your eyes for how good it is.
l'm a FOH and studio engineer, and they do. Only equals I've heard are on Kurt Vile's Pitchfork jawn Bottle Back. And as much as i love KV & band, they were under rehearsed and even if you wouldn't have noticed but for that fact that he opens the gig by saying, "welcome to your rehearsal, my dudes" or actually think (as i do) that slower looser vibe makes it even better. These folks obviously don't have that problem, wonderful musicianship! ;
I’m late to the party on Widowspeak, having only found them 3-4 months ago. This is the first time seeing them perform these songs live - and wow, this is truly incredible. Her vocals are just ethereal and beautiful, and the guitar work is absolutely fantastic here, truly escalates the already great recording. Need to now catch them actually live. Thank you KEXP!
Yes there really is a wealth of wonderful music out there! It's incredible also to hear each wave of musicians and how others have inspired them, all the different genre's and styles of musicianship have blended to create some really beautiful. But honestly loving the Dream Pop and Shoegaze resurgence from the last couple of years. KEXP really seem to be phenomenal at capturing pure talent and showcasing it in such a way, a national and global gem that's for sure!
@Daniel Drader As someone who has been in community and commercial broadcasting for over 15+ years, I agree about the wealth of musical talent out there and supporting community based radio, with an honest heart I can say that KEXP are one of those very rare and special and stations that are making the best radio, connecting equally with the listeners and guests, allowing the medium of radio to remain relevant while doing wonders for the platform and those indie and more established artists and producers! Engaging, entertaining and captivating, the unique way they capture performances is phenomenal and it's such a great service they provide both from both in front and behind the mic!
What a great performance. Molly's breathy voice, and the sway of amplitude between her rhythm guitar and Robert's lead guitar, the fantastic baselines and fills, and quietly busy drums that drive everything home. Such a talented band. And of course the KEXP engineers, who are otherworldly. This might be my new favorite KEXP studio performance.
A very unrated band, they are super interesting. Love the eclectic images that inspire the lyrics. The meter of their composing is very unique and memorable. Thanks for doing this update Cheryl and staff.
I love both KEXP (especially Cheryl's interviews) and Widowspeak and let out a little squeal when they were going to do a session, specially with the wonderful Cheryl Waters. But this really blew me away and was sonically beyond expectations! So amazing and like others are saying this beautiful blissed out Mazzy Star style vibe is just gorgeous :) It made my week, thank you!
6 months ago or so I had a mandatory class and had to get up at 5 am to take the train. I'm not a morning person so it felt terrible. On the way to the station on an empty road 'everything is simple' came on the car radio. It was pure magic. Didn't knew them. Now it's my favorite album of the year. Lots of love from Belgium! Looking forward to your show @Trix!
Everything is simple 'til it's not Learned to love the ropes when you were caught See they could be braided a different way And sinking into nothing - you learn to stay Singers tend to hide the truth Or you hear it, if it speaks to you But what do you expect, it serves them well To edit anything that's fit to tell I'm no better, and I'm no worse I'm still around but it's a curse And you'll just do the best you can And time will call you a good man And sing your praise, because you would Sing it yourself because you could But what do I expect, it serves you well To edit anything that's fit to tell Everything is simple 'til it's not Learned to love the ropes when you were caught Everything is simple 'til it's not Everything is simple
Molly what a beautiful person you are. I listen to the music of Widowspeak for since I was 15 years old and I never (shame on me) looked up who these people were. Now I know, the music is even more enchanting.
Just listened to the album & have to say that this live performance sounds much better, I’m surprised how subdued the lead guitar is on the recorded album. The band should record the album as a live session imo as a second release, kind of reminds me how hatful of hollow by the Smiths sounded so much better than the studio recordings because the band had gigged & become comfortable with the material enough that it had much more life & vitality. I like the album too though, but it’s a different experience, this was a really great performance & I’m happy to have been introduced to them.
My opinion is quite the same, while I dont really like the sound of their newest album and enjoyed more their earlier ones (especially the albums which they created with Kevin McMahon at his barn in upstate NY), this live video just blows my mind and ears. The drums fits in the sound so much as well. Gotta see them live!
It's surprising how much better this live session sounds compared to the album. Whenever I listen in my car, I listen to this. It sounds even more amazing when I connect using my AUX cord as opposed to Bluetooth. The bass and drums sound insane.
Someone said you had moved to the ocean And now it makes sense I passed the house, but I didn't stop I just felt tired I guess I feel something when I hear your name in passing Clear as a bell When I hear someone singing you or like you Not as well True blue Mm True blue Still talking about you You talked like you'd be remembered When you told me your name You waltzed around meeting strangers But I liked you the same We danced on the weekend 'Cause then we had plans Good people are hard to find I keep them, when I can True blue Mm True blue Still talking about you Do you ever get tired of swimming Are you sleeping more in the west? randomly found this today. Love this and never heard them before and big props to the lead guitar player I checked out his channel and he has some good tunes as well.
been listening to Mazzy Star's Rose Blood on repeat for a few hours before I clicked on this. What a nice treat. A more upbeat but otherwise seamless transition.
Love this band’s sound, the vocals, guitars, drums, bass lyrics (did I miss anything?) Yet another great session and interview by Cheryl. Also, Molly belongs to Tacoma.
Watch the world, it's just turning on Someone left the lights burning all night Someone was up, working in the quiet And now it's broken by their morning song How can I help you, what do you need? Strange days overwhelmed by me I keep my mind on the task at hand Stitches in satin, making plans While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today Walking home, watch the world close Hear a song spilling out from a hole in the wall See the windows glow from across the street See the chain stitches lined up so neat While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait We'll have it done today While you wait
Reminiscent of Mazzy Star and the Pastels, a Scottish band from many years ago. Maybe a little Cowboy Junkies and a dash of the Joy Formidable as well.
2 years running and still my favorite band of all time. I love how you can love all of these songs individually on the record but then when you hear Rob jamming on top of them live it still brings a tear to your eyes for how good it is.
The tone of that guitar is just delicious.
just wanted to write a similar comment. I already loved Rickenbackers, but this one sounds extra beautiful..
its like tasty for the ear holes man....
its very very oh so spicy. top notch
It sounds the same live. Dude’s got a special touch.
Ok this is incredibly good. And I've noticed that KEXP must have the best sound engineers on earth...
So good.
Thats gotta be why this sounds better than the album version
l'm a FOH and studio engineer, and they do. Only equals I've heard are on Kurt Vile's Pitchfork jawn Bottle Back. 9:25 True Blue

thank you. you are the real MVP
wow, the guitarist on the Rickenbacker is beyond good, he could change the atmosphere in a room in two bars with his fingers...cap...doffed!
Robert Earl Thomas (the guitarist) has put out a couple of solo records as well.
@@fishflake1209 thanks for the info. I came to the comments looking for information on this dude.
Man, you're absolutely right. This sound went cold for a long while but it's coming back.
I’m late to the party on Widowspeak, having only found them 3-4 months ago.

you're just in time!!
@@brainflowvideos today for me, and at like 3 minutes in I'm in love with Everything!
I'm 2 months behind you but I'm very glad I found them
True Blue 9:28 is beautiful and sublime. Flat out amazing… There is always good new music out there, you just have to seek it out. ☮️❤️🥁🎸

Great band, love the new album. They should be way bigger... support artists like these!

Such a talented band. And of course the KEXP engineers, who are otherworldly. This might be my new favorite KEXP studio performance.
This was enough to nudge them to the top of my leader board, love the enjoyment and exuberance of this performance!
1st listen: "This is nice"
2nd Listen : "I need this on vinyl" as I play air guitar to the Drive
True Blue is just an absolute treat of a song ❤
You said it brother
really happy to see them come back with such a great album- pretty much takes me back to the early 10's
Got me crying when I should be asleep man… nothing else matters when I hear Widowspeak.
“ Not all who wander are lost “ Stay Golden 🤙🏽
discovered these only a few months ago... fell in love after only one song, and their discography has been on rotation ever since
A dreamscape of sound.
Perfect for sitting on red rock and watching the sun set.
God Bless You, Cheryl. Thank you for continuing to host, and keep on keeping on, while showcasing such great young talent....
Saw them open for Lord Huron in Arkansas bout 7 years ago. Killer band.
A fantastic band.
Just about to go out and see them play live for the 2nd time.
They just get better and better.
KEXP does it again. Glad to have discovered this band.
A very unrated band, they are super interesting. Love the eclectic images that inspire the lyrics. The meter of their composing is very unique and memorable. Thanks for doing this update Cheryl and staff.

The Mazzy Star influence is unmistakable
That doesn't make it bad tho. I like it!
true
Was about to make the same comment and I don't mind at all, nice to see a Mazzy Star reincarnation. :)
Amazing session. Please come and play in Paris! ^^
Mazzy Star, Belly and Cowboy Junkies ya

Truly excellent band. Saw them twice this year, and they are phenomenal live.
Everything is simple 'til it's not
Learned to love the ropes when you were caught
See they could be braided a different way
And sinking into nothing - you learn to stay
Singers tend to hide the truth
Or you hear it, if it speaks to you
But what do you expect, it serves them well
To edit anything that's fit to tell
I'm no better, and I'm no worse
I'm still around but it's a curse
And you'll just do the best you can
And time will call you a good man
And sing your praise, because you would
Sing it yourself because you could
But what do I expect, it serves you well
To edit anything that's fit to tell
Everything is simple 'til it's not
Learned to love the ropes when you were caught
Everything is simple 'til it's not
Everything is simple
Any idea on what it all means? I am clueless. Great song though.
"Breadwinner" from one of their older albums is the BEST SONG
Magical guitar riffs sheesh
Wow this band is awesome. I discover so much great music through KEXP
The vocals and guitar work and style(s) love this group
This Dude is Amazing. Such a cool Giutar Play.
She still takes my breath away 🖤🖤
Love this band!
Her soft spoken voice intertwined with the sublime guitar riffs is really great
So beautiful ..sound,angelical voice like Hope Sandoval,Opal & Others...
Perfecto👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
oh my holy smokes what a voice! beautiful sounding band
Brilliant - see you in Hackney!
Very refreshing to hear something musical
The tone and intention of every sound is perfect.
Im happy youtube just randomly recommended me this. Good music
Widowspeak es una banda infravalorada, no se le da el reconocimiento que se merece. Son auténticas estrellas de rock alternativo.
Molly what a beautiful person you are. I listen to the music of Widowspeak for since I was 15 years old and I never (shame on me) looked up who these people were. Now I know, the music is even more enchanting.

I love that riff (forgive me is my terminology is off) on Everything Is Simple. It's like musical honey.
reminds me of Meet Puppets, from Nirvana's MTV unplugged
Her voice remind me to Hope Sandoval
The vocals and guitar are just superb.
Someone said you had moved to the ocean
And now it makes sense
I passed the house, but I didn't stop
I just felt tired I guess
I feel something when I hear your name in passing
Clear as a bell
When I hear someone singing you or like you
Not as well
True blue
Mm
True blue
Still talking about you
You talked like you'd be remembered
When you told me your name
You waltzed around meeting strangers
But I liked you the same
We danced on the weekend
'Cause then we had plans
Good people are hard to find
I keep them, when I can
True blue
Mm
True blue
Still talking about you
Do you ever get tired of swimming
Are you sleeping more in the west?
Wash your hair with peppermint and lemon
Palomine on your breath
The pull of the tide was too great, I know
You meant as well as you could
Just wanted something to write on a stone
To tell everyone you were good
True blue
Mm
True blue
Still talking about you
True blue

Aplausos👏👏👏👏
Mi banda favorita
Pure, this is pure and clean. I feel the crisp open sound in my Soul. A slight echo of heaven in a speaker.
Can't wait to see these guys in Madrid tonight, very cool band!
KEXP must be protected at all costs.
Absolutely beautiful 🖤
what a great band!
They were so good live on August 19th in Wilmington, DE!

I think only good people appreciate this kind of music
randomly found this today. Love this and never heard them before and big props to the lead guitar player I checked out his channel and he has some good tunes as well.

wow that was good
Really enjoying this. And...she really likes to talk :)
this is great, and I'm still on the 1st song!
Обожаю этот мягкий голос! Занимаюсь ремонтом старого дома под эту музыку)
They have a great sound. Thanks for the intro, KEXP. Hope you're paying your sound guy a whole lot haha
