Gamestop actually has pretty competitive prices on some of the toys my kids are into. I dont find it desperate that they are searching for additional revenue streams. If anything they are future proofing a bit since the newer generations of gaming consoles are slowly trying to eliminate the resell market.

18:30 *_Bust A Groove_* how good I am at the game series is debatable even with a CRT and original hardware PS1, but I loved the music enough to buy all three OST CD's including the PS2 Japan-only _Dance Summit 2001_
Also, if karaoke counts, I also enjoyed _Karaoke Revolution,_ _SingStar,_ and the _Rock Band/Guitar Hero_ games that featured singing parts

The topic of "western songs that Asia actually likes more than the place the artist came from" is very interesting. Apparently, Little Bitch by The Specials was popular enough in Japan for it to be included in the tiny songlist of the very first Dance Dance Revolution... despite the fact it's a British ska song, about the polar opposite of the rest of the songlist.

To the person who's struggling with retro games, I would recommend playing on a handheld of some kind.
Its possible your tv has a slight lag, that is making things more difficult.
Also, if you play on an emulator, you can rewind the game, and kind of "cheese it" that way.

They said "besides RPG" but honestly - depending on how retro you have to stay (I mean you can get modern games right?). RPG's are expansive! From the Final Fantasy stuff to the original Fallouts which are turn based or X-Com, Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics. Heck Mario and Rabbids on Switch!
But then what about point and click adventures? There are lots of those too like Grim Fandango or i just got Chicken Police and Later Alligator on Switch. Lots of the old Lucas Arts games.
And on a system like Switch there are many games that are slower paced like Animal Crossing and even Luigis Mansion. Ive played some fun fishing games which were pretty laid back. Tons of farming sims like Yonder and Story of Seasons.
And getting into indie games -- there are a couple of action parts but nothing punishing in games like Night in the Woods and Spiritfarer. A fun puzzle game called Inbento which features a cat making sushi.
And this would be very niche -- but if you are into anime -- there are tons of graphic story games like Danganronpa and Steins Gate. Tons of "date a girl and date a boy" games. But that might not be everyones taste.

I felt Gamestop missed the opportunity to fill the market gap left from Toys/Babies R Us going under. I liked that they carrying a lot more merchandise. Investing in that market to make them sort of a KB Toys boutique toy store suits their existing demographic. It might have just not been doable regardless.

Hey, thanks for answering my question! I'm a huge rhythm game player both Japanese and western so it was interesting to hear that Ian is actually a BEMANI player.
And, yes, my screenname is based on the Mega Man character.
EDIT: Oh, yeah, Elite Beat Agents is based on the Osu rhythm games, the most famous of which is free to play on PC. Pat is right in that some of the stories you have to do are really touching, including one song in the story where you're helping a little girl get over the loss of her father, and the game literally refuses to stop if you fail the song. It goes "I will not fail her". That's pretty amazing. Amplitude on PS4 is a very underrated rhythm games that's also story-based, the entire game is a concept album about a girl in a coma, and it's one of the best original soundtracks you'll ever hear in a rhythm game. I highly recommend it.

I don't think a PS2 or XBox Mini will ever happen. That generation was the first one where we really started to see a huge library of multi-platform games shared across consoles, and more often than not those games had no difference between consoles other than graphical performance/resolution. Exclusives are there of course, but the multi-platforms being almost identical takes out a lot of the excitement and identity in a mini console for me.

A few reasons why a mini xbox wouldn't work
    - these mini consoles need to be cheap, sub $100. You can't emulate N64, Xbox, PS2, GC on a box that cheap.
    - Xbox was a very "online" console. Its unlikely that xbox would rebuild xbox online for a mini console.

...so, I literally worked in a shop in Davis where Michael Burry and Gamestop execs came into... in 2017... to a) offer me a job, and b) if I refused the job, which I did, shut down the Davis, CA gamestop... but they spent multiple days watching me in the shop and how our customers went around the store and their takeaway, and dismay... was we sold video games but all of them were in a glass case, in a corner... and PS2, PS3, XBox and 360 used games were the main used game sellers and we just had a back log of those games to replace games as they sold... people just go into game shops to impulse buy crap now. Oh, and having a movie rental section brings in hella foot traffic...
The amount of people who would regularly stop in, while their wives were getting ice cream or food for their kids, and pick up a movie to rent and then impulse buy a retro game, like snes carts too... watch Gamestop locations become Bizarro World in Davis... I won't be surprised if movie rentals return, like physical blu ray disc covers on shelves and racks... with single pokemon cards in glass cases and displays of pops all over the floor.
We just put a wall of pops near a island that is visible as you walk in, gets the children as they walk by...
That owner of the Davis location is insane and Michael Burry was very confused why I'd even work for him and was pissed Gamestop couldn't survive in Davis all the sudden.

How about all the great PS1/PS2 light gun games, those are great. I do know there are a lot of disabled gamers making their own controllers to play games perfectly for themselves. A lot of arcade stick setups in that scene, especially when it comes to amputees. I would look up other gamers with dexterity issues and see what they do.

GameStop doing the merchandise thing never really appealed to me at all and kind of just annoyed me. Any time I ever went to GameStop in the past it was to go buy a specific game and maybe I'll walk out with a second if I find something I like, but that was never a place I went to where I'd buy compulsively. I imagine a lot of people are like that. Just going there to buy a single game they want, not to walk out with a hoodie and a handful of plushies. The reason it annoyed me is that they were always front and center, blocking everything, making it hard to even stand in line or get to where you want to go when there's people in there. It made the place super crowded and annoying to navigate.

I was 10 years old at the time of the festival, my 11th birthday was still 2 months out and I was shocked to hear about what happened there and it was even more shocking to hear about this stuff as a 32 year old 22 years later. There were just so many bad decisions that led to what happened on Sunday night of that festival. and 3.) Man DDR a buddy of mine was really really into that series when we were in High school. @@uhhwhateverdude9463 There isn't a single person that would give the xbox an award for design. It's a black, featureless, shoebox. The others are a work of art compared to MS's basic cuboid. MS probably cannot wait to redesign that plastic block.

@@uhhwhateverdude9463 The Xbox Series X, a.k.a. the best reason to buy an actual PC. Or better yet, a Steam Deck. You can get Gamepass, Steam, PS Now, GOG, EGS... there's no need to buy an increasingly outdated plastic brick that won't have actual exclusives. Good discussion, glad we could agree on this.

I agree that it has been getting a bad reputation lately as the "it didn't age well" community keeps gaining popularity. However, the N64 has a lot more good games that it is given credit for. Every one wants to focus on Superman 64, MK Mythologies, Power Rangers, Carmegeddon. No system has a perfect library for starters. Furthermore, the heavy hitters on the N64 are amazing. What I learned through collecting for it was that there are quite a few less popular titles that are extremely fun games.

Most N64 games are good, it's just that there aren't enough games. The PS1 annihilated it in the eyes of the mainstream and the Saturn was better in the eyes of hardcore players who were willing to look for deep cuts, so it kind of sat in the awkward middle ground no game console really wants to.

You two should watch the new Masters of the Universe on Netflix.
For a nice retro game that doesn't take dexterity and is really fun, Civilization I & II! Also Sim City! Which you can find versions of these games on home consoles if you're unable or unwilling to play them on the PC.
