Really enjoyable session. it does sound incredible that a touring classical violinist with years of training says he cannot improvise. I haven't dealt a lot with that level of musicians, but I've had someone who's taken lessons, sight reads music and plays piano really well tell me, "I can't improvise or play by ear, because to me, when I read the music I think of it as a key I press, not a musical note". My jaw sort of dropped because at that time I only played by ear and could just figure out chords and melodies of songs. I couldn't understand how a guy could play Beethoven and Chopin and not figure out stuff by ear. On the other hand, I think Ray can but perhaps because of exclusively classical training 1) he has almost never been asked to improvise and never practiced it and 2) being used to playing the most excellent music ever composed perfectly he thinks whatever he improvises is comparatively so crappy that he says he can't. Anyway, it's an interesting phenomenon.
Actually improvisation is a classical music lost art sadly, most baroque to late classical composers and performers knew how to improvise and some were really good at it. Of course in a different lenguage than what modern jazz and popular music improvisation works but they did nonetheless, the principles are the same, use the music vocabulary you already have to instinctively build a new composition that works, like a conversation. In the romantic period music became more composition focused than ever, but soloists were often asked to improvise, Cadenzas in concertos for instance are meant to be improvised with the material already displayed during the first movement, but even that eventually changed and as is nowdays, great players wrote down cadenza parts and those became famous and the standards, like Jascha Heifetz, Tchaikovsky's concerto cadenza, and no one improvises anymore RIP but as we can see im the video, you can't be deeply familiar with a musical vocabulary and be completely unable to improvise.

Is that so? Classical musicians are not very good at improvising? That explains a lot. My friends are so good at improvising and just having fun with their instruments that I always feel left out like I'm an inferior player, like my musical sense is not very good...but I always somehow win violin competitions over them. This maybe explains it, my friends do like to play anime themes and whatnot very much while I am a full on classical musician. The only reason I'm even watching this video is because I saw Ray Chen's name.
As a general rule, it goes that classical musicians can't improvise worth shit and jazz musician's can, or at least that's said. But frankly, most of what you hear from what sounds like "good improvisation" is not improvised. It's just someone memorizing modes and arpeggios and which chords to put them over, then regurgitating the same overused licks that have been used for the past 50 years. Of course, some people are legitimately improvising, but this is genuinely a very rare thing to do well.
Old master composers like Mozart sure could improvise. Thats what theme and variations style was for. For old concertos, soloists are supposed to improvise the cadenza.
The weird thing about classical music is that all those big composers and piano players improvised a lot like mozart, bach and beethoven etc, but for some reason improvisation aren't really a big thing in classical music today.
@@pathaleyguitar9763 I am obliged to disagree. You can't say that using your knowledge and piecing it together to make something new isn't improv just because it was already used or is widely known. It's like saying you're not a real cook cuz you used an already prepared spice bundle to put in your food. You did create something with your own spin on it and that's what improvisation is
I came here from two set introducing me to Ray Chen and then two months later I did my offline TV drama and now rewatching this from a new perspective.
a lot of classical musicians dont know how to improvise because of the way they are taught and trained but the main reason is they think improvising is hard and challenging but its not as u can see Ray felt the music very quick and adapted to that very quickly so yeah its easier than u think dont make it hard guys! Love you all
In the beginning, Ray is reminding me of a strings student coming back after summer break after not practicing and is like remembering in the middle of a song.
I saw this video for the first time. Amazing. Its amazing how they can harmonize their play. And they are enjoying it. Its just stunishing. Sometimes I forget my passwords, but these guys can memorize hundreds of melodies...
It’s been 5 months since I pulled out my violin, since I was forced to move somewhere where there isn’t orchestra (I hate that they don’t...) so I’ve been pretty sad and haven’t had the time to play since they only have band over here. But after watching this I suddenly got the urge to play and kind of have that spark back when I first started orchestra and my hands would literally shake because I was so excited to play but extremely nervous at the same time. Thanks guys.
For those who wants to know the notes for the improvising , it is: C G Am F for the last note do a c chord on second scale for guitar it is on the 12th string 👍
also i find it absolutely stunning that theyre learning from eachother. ray has his own entire style while the other two have their own as well, and they both get to show off their strengths and weaknesses with music. ray isnt comfortable with improvising, and the others arent as comfortable with the heavy/fast classical. i love everything about this
its so relaxing listening to you guys. i just let it play while doing something else and i love it. much better than whats being played in the radios nowadays.
Ray was probably very much genuine about not knowing how to improvise but when you're so naturally talented as a musician, it comes extremely naturally. More so than they usually expect. Ik so many classically trained pianists and violinist afraid of improvising but after a little bit of trying, they're jamming out like Albert Lily and ray
aight thx i was looking for lilypichu+friends music streams because these are honestly so calming and i got to use this video FINALLY as background music for studying :0
Even though half the time Ray is just fooling around and being clueless when he plays it sounds so BEAUTIFUL. Wow. I can only dream of being that good.
Albert is actually a really good player for how cocky he is. The way he instantly switched gears to harmonizing the melody at 10:56 is an extraordinarily difficult skill to have
I love it when professional classical musicians play something not classical; I love seeing that skill and technique turned to something more casual. I'd love to see some more classical musicians join in on Irish traditional sessions.

but as we can see im the video, you can't be deeply familiar with a musical vocabulary and be completely unable to improvise.
Exactly. That's how how lot of these pieces were able to stay around. By people knowing how they sounded because they could improve
UMMMMMMMM you just threw modern composers out of the window thanks
I can’t improvise for shit
Ray Chen sounds so fucking good when hes playing Rondo Capriccioso and the other classical music. That's his shit
OMG he never heard the Ysaye's Chopin Ballade Arrangement before? This is an absolute masterpiece of a transcription!!!
This is exactly the kind of fun everyone should experience in school as a music major.

Same !!
Love this:
Ray: can't improvise.
SECONDS LATER
*Pulls out a breautiful movie-grade comp*
Ray: See I told you, can't do it
Watched it years ago so many times over. Now it popped up in my feed again. Here we go again
When classical musicians use the word "improvise", they are thinking complex stuff. Who knew it was so easy to improvise "easy" music ;)
Top 10 best anime crossovers
That girl is representing for the violin beginners give her an around of a applause
I luv her cute squeaky high voice!! She's so cute!!❤️❤️❤️
25:47 can we just appreciate Lily releasing her inner jellyfish? It’s fricking adorable!!!
albert having the balls to play in front of ray has me shook hello imagine playing for a world class violinist
@Seancarl Jayme_2240233 i don’t forgive albert for what he did but dragging it on isn’t helping anybody it’s in the past let it stay there
Noelic naturally because classical musicians practice faithfully with music sheets so its very technical and exact.
You did create something with your own spin on it and that's what improvisation is
Can we stop and mention how ADORABLE LILY VOICE IS OMG THAT THREW ME OFF IN THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO
Adorable??==
I came here from two set introducing me to Ray Chen and then two months later I did my offline TV drama and now rewatching this from a new perspective.
This is such a pleasant watch. So chill, and with great tunes!
a lot of classical musicians dont know how to improvise because of the way they are taught and trained but the main reason is they think improvising is hard and challenging but its not as u can see Ray felt the music very quick and adapted to that very quickly so yeah its easier than u think dont make it hard guys! Love you all
In the beginning, Ray is reminding me of a strings student coming back after summer break after not practicing and is like remembering in the middle of a song.
22:58 oh my god when Ray does his little wholesome smile at that final chord omfg i cant get enough of it
I saw this video for the first time.
Amazing. Its amazing how they can harmonize their play. And they are enjoying it. Its just stunishing.
Sometimes I forget my passwords, but these guys can memorize hundreds of melodies...
The beginning was so beautiful wtf?
HOW DID I NOT KNOW OF THIS VIDEO?! This is amazing
So many emotions when they played sadness and sorrow.
For those who wants to know the notes for the improvising , it is:
C G Am F for the last note do a c chord on second scale for guitar it is on the 12th string 👍
When Ray started harmonizing on sadness and sorrow. Wtf that tone selection. incredible
When ray started playing in the start of the video, that double violin music just touched my heart ❤
NOOOO WE GOT SO CLOSE TO RAY IMPROVISING BREATH OF THE WILD
the harmonics in the chords 1:22-1:24 brought a tear to my eye, soooo beautiful
Damn they should make a soundtrack or something it sounds amazing 😮
I think I've watched this about 7 times, it's so good
Ray Chen was so happy when he played A Whole New World
0:47 my soul needs a full song of this
That IU cover was beautiful, I could listen to that for days
also i find it absolutely stunning that theyre learning from eachother. ray has his own entire style while the other two have their own as well, and they both get to show off their strengths and weaknesses with music. ray isnt comfortable with improvising, and the others arent as comfortable with the heavy/fast classical. i love everything about this
also sorry i blanked on their names. albert and lily
aw man the good days
Ray when he heard albert improvise *AMAZING*
as a classical musician, it's so hard to improvise cuz nothing we come up with can ever compare to the masterpieces the og composers did >.
17:16 look at the joy on Ray's face
its so relaxing listening to you guys. i just let it play while doing something else and i love it. much better than whats being played in the radios nowadays.
dudeeee the Awaken part ! WTF he's so goood
We will miss all this jam session, hope we could see more :D
Ray: I don’t improvise
Me: AND I OOP-
Ray Chens face when he plays, the smile, just wonderfull..
oh my gosh cover of through the night-IU was amazing
What a cool thing to see a musician of Ray's lever improvise for the first time!
"I can sight read“ thanks for clarifying.
i love how Ray react to the improvisation.
Such a treat 🥳😭😭😭 quarantine has never been better
This is an awkward recommended by UA-cam video
I'm so torn bc Ray and Lily but on the other hand....
We need ray to come back and play with lily and Michael “boat horn” reeves
@@superiorcalico3587 *BOAT NOISE*
I can imagine michael just straight up firing his tazer in the air while they play
@@tunasandwich8049 I'm imagining a really good sounding piano violin and saxophone xD
aight thx i was looking for lilypichu+friends music streams because these are honestly so calming and i got to use this video FINALLY as background music for studying :0
Even though half the time Ray is just fooling around and being clueless when he plays it sounds so BEAUTIFUL. Wow. I can only dream of being that good.
Albert is actually a really good player for how cocky he is. The way he instantly switched gears to harmonizing the melody at 10:56 is an extraordinarily difficult skill to have
So this is where the good asians went with their music!!! giving my old og youtube vibes. thank you twitch.
While watching this I broke out into a smile without realizing I was so many times.
Jesus this is a skilled room
Any room with Ray is skilled
I love it when professional classical musicians play something not classical; I love seeing that skill and technique turned to something more casual. I'd love to see some more classical musicians join in on Irish traditional sessions.
Ray Chen is coming to give a masterclass at YASP this summer
Damn, inspiring everyone to learn instruments now. It’s contagious...
