The Worst Job I have EVER SEEN! Kit car build.

- Hello all, this is just a quick video about the job we did in June. Possibly the worst bodge job ever! Have a look at how this Kitcar was repaired in the past! It's like a locost or a westfield, the car is an MK INDY.
P.S. I did ask who repaired it but was told “it was a place that does welding” so not a clue of the name.

What I'd say is, name and shame, those of us who have built from scratch or those that build kits put so much care and attention into them for our own pride and self preservation that work like this needs publicising, the company put out of business and the proprietor prosecuting.
F*ck naming and shaming them, just sue their f*cking arses off for creating and selling a deathtrap like that.
OMG that is chronic workmanship. I'm afraid I'd be demanding my money back for that shoddy dangerous work. Name and shame. Great work guys. Sounded ace!
That's a perfect example of why I am always nervous of letting anyone I don't know touching any car I own. Finding someone to trust, basically with your life, is sooo difficult.
Too right! I had a garage I thought I could trust (that I have used for about 40 years) replace a wheel bearing on a Subaru. It only lasted less than 1000 miles before it was making a hell of a din. On looking at it myself it was clear the guy had done the whole reassembly with the air wrench including the axle nut - small wonder it didn't last. Turns out the garage had had a total turnover of staff in the previous few months. So, despite being well past my "sell-by" date for crawling under cars I'm back to doing these jobs myself.
As a Locost kit car builder and driver I would be interested to know what cowboy did that and especially if they are apparently kit car specialists, should be ashamed
Ashamed? They should, and a minimum, close their doors and take up gardening.

I worked with a guy who was going to guild a Locost 7, he bought Ron Chapman's "How to build a car for £250". As you'll know, the build is based on the MK1/Mk2 Escort, however, the guy was an idiot, who thought he knew it all (spent 7yrs rebuilding his motorbike he crashed, took 7 attempts to pass the MOT, lots of loose nuts/bolts and frog lamp for headlamp), he bought a MK3 Granada v6 auto of all things to use as a donor car.
When I asked him how was he going to build it, he said he'd just lengthen the measurements as required. He didn't have a clue about the IRS and when I asked about strengthening, he just said he'd add in extra bits for triangulation, no knowing where it should be placed etc. He left the company while still cutting the metal to length for the chassis (using book measurements), so nothing from the donor car would fit anyway and doubt he ever built it.
Name and shame them, otherwise someone could lose their life in a crash caused by bad workmanship

After 40+ years in the trade I would say that that is pretty standard fayre and,I've seen much worse.Just recently I repaired a fiat based Italian kit that had around 9" of front upper rail missing between the bulkhead and replaced by a very well disguised and skilfully shaped piece of hardwood,fixed in place to the side panel with PU and panhead self tappers,with one Tec screw holding the front engine mounting in place. I have never understood the mentality of such practices,apart from the safety and handling aspects,you spend more time trying to get the components to re fit than you would if you just effected the repair properly in the first place.
How do they stay in business?
Where the hell are you? The republic of Congo? This is not standard fare by any stretch in the USA, or any other civilized country for that matter.
@@nobodynoone2500 In the UK. And yes it is pretty much standard fayre all over the world,the USA included. I spent 12 years in an American specialist body shop and plenty of the 'nice' cars shipped over from the states had 'repairs' that were just as bad as anything I have seen from elsewhere in the world. One car I remember in particular a mercury cougar which despite looking fantastic and having various certificates of appraisal from the US and paperwork pertaining to it's immaculate and pristine condition when put into a brake roller for testing the front cross member and suspension pulled it's self clear of the car in the rollers,it was a big old mess! upon further investigation it seems some one had Seen fit to weld it all together with whats commonly referred to as chicken shit!.I'm not saying it's acceptable but for every garage or shop that does thing correctly there are 3 or 4 ripping the arse out of it,if you don't believe so then you are ignorantly naive.

I worked at a foreign car repair and restoration shop in the early 80s here in the states. In a country that was still trying to break it's addiction to body on frame, rear wheel drive habits the horrors one would see for repairs was incredible.
The first one was a rather nice 356 Porsche. It seemed to drive ok. The fellow that had more money than skill had just paid a bit more than full restoration price because this was the cheapest(!) 356 he could find.
He was an excellent customer though so we agreed to put the car on the lift and check it out. Thankfully the customer let me take him on to work beforehand.
The first clue was the arms of the rack would not clear the bottom of the car. We had our lift inset into the floor because of the low slung exotics we worked on.
Uh-Oh. So ever resourceful I got some wood blocks to get things up a bit. We always used extreme caution when doing that first rims height of lift so slowly and carefully I proceeded up.
Just as the weight started to leave the front wheels there was the unmistakable sound of rust crumbling.
I stopped and got the boss. Spooked by the unpleasant noises we decided to put it on the drive on lift instead.
It took more work than usual to get it on that lift so we were on red alert.
With trepidation we sent it up in the air.
It may be a shocker to you folks in Britain but rust can do evil things to the support structure of a 356.
Ok humor there.
The chassis was pretty much gone. In its place were all sorts of bits of flat bar, angle and plate. Nothing Porsche had left there though.
We were shocked and horrified for our good customer. My boss made the call and had the man come over.
First we tried to get hold of the seller.
Nope.
Then the previous owner.
Nope
Then the title had issues.... Stolen!
Not from the owner but the scrap yard it had been sent to after it went down and embankment because the front axle had separated from the chassis.
Luckily he had paid with a cheque and the bank stopped payment.
To it's credit it ran well and had many parts to give. My boss paid the scrap yard a small portion of what it would have taken to ship it back from Florida to Massachusetts.
We also found our now extremely grateful customer a 356 that had an older restoration. He paid about half for it compared to the rusty stolen mess.
Then there is the Fiat that came from New Jersey.....................

So many people see fresh paint like it's a good thing. It's always a red flag.
As a child I would spend every spear moment along side my father " Bob Rose" pushing pop rivet's into holes and helping my dad to build his triumph herald based home built sports cars, New Zealand in the 80s and early 90s are impressed in my soul . To watch this brought back memories and I thank you for that !!! 48 now , dad has passed away recently and it hurts to see that !!! His passion was ripped away because of new ministry of transport Rules . I'm saddened to the point of sorrow to see this for obvious reasons .
To quote Red Green, "If you take it to someone, you don't know if they did the job wrong. If you do it yourself, you can be certain."
Had something like this myself. Got the car new from dealers. Had short time, had an incident in a car park, not massive damage but plenty of bent things. Dealer repaired, I went back almost weekly, something is wrong with it mate its just wrong, I couldn't be any more specific. After about 6 months, took it to a small garage, up on the lift it went, all the dealer had done is replace some parts, no attempt at straightning or replacing a bent shock, sheered spring (The very first coil was sheered and it was hidden by the mount), bent lower control arm and twisted upper. They did put new calipers on, new bearings and from the witness marks you can see they had tried to brute force something straight.
Got the little man to repair it, and I told him to be unreasonable on the cost, took more than a year and some court action but they main dealer paid out for it all in the end, and I never went back took it to his rivals on the other side of town who have so far touch wood been only to happy to keep me serviced
Should name and shame as that is horrendous! Obviously not repaired by competent engineers, or even someone with mechanical sympathy. Good to see it's all sorted and is back to being a proper toy.

That really does look like the work of an expert. as opposed to somebody that actually knows what they're doing.
Plenty of this sort of stuff went on in New Zealand in the past. However, several years ago the hot rod, sports car, motor caravan and repair industries developed codes of practice to help prevent the Government from bringing down restrictive legislation. Some complain about requirements being too tough, but it keeps this sort of death trap and poor engineering off the road. It never ceases to amaze me what shocking things can still happen in other parts of the world. Hopefully, this thing would never have passed an MOT. It certainly wouldn't pass the NZ equivalent, the Warrant of Fitness.
And if they keep adding strict standards, eventually you won't be able to build cars, just buy. As it is across the ditch we can barely modify cars newer than 25 years old, don't even want to know if you're allowed to build.
Some of the us builds are horrible.. poor engineering and just downright dangerous.

Years ago, I've seen the battery in a 1987 Ford Fiesta, held in place with a glued on piece of tin can. Nothing surprises me afterwards. Unbelievable how some people "fix" cars.
I read a story on an old forum, a lad did this rover metro gti up, looked well rotten, but the next photos the car looked bob on, Anyway he sold it, to another lad on the forum who was going to use it as a Rally/ hill climb car. As soon as him and his pal got stripping it down, they found that the thing was a lethal death trap, seatbelt mounts that were riveted back into place, and the filled over, All came away in the lads hand, with a light tug, that was just the start of things. They just tapped like hell at it, and it was just full of bodge. The lads ended up finding a much better shell and swopped over the GTi stuff. The lad said the seller should have been a shamed of him self, if a family had bought that and had a head on, the poor kid would not have been safe at all, due to the seat belt.
People cut corners on car repairs all the time now. I'm currently fixing a Ford focus ST whose prior owner hit something with the front bumper they had it for painted over but they JB welded the tabs back together and they're not the proper length. Shoddy repairs are out there even with newer cars.
Most people think that the bulk heads job is to only protect from fire, this isn't the case.
My brother had a Mini Clubman Estate back in the mid 90s with a Metro MG Turbo engine bolted in.
He hit a Ford Transit head on only doing 45mph. The engine broke it's mounts, smashed through the firewall (that we found out was rotten) and landed on his lap.
He was extremely lucky to survive, he was even more lucky to not be a paraplegic.

The best advice iv ever heard regarding kit cars is you only want to own one that either you built yourself or one that was built by someone you would trust with your life.
That repair was absolutely shocking. Begs believe if he had, had another accident in it. Good job again chaps, keep up the great work 👍.

How any reputable company could sign that repair off as safe or fit for purpose, I've no idea!
I was 1 of 2 engine builders for the company I worked for in the '90s, but was also built the kit cars, we had an insurance approved body repair workshop in the group, so they did all the repairs, but had made jigs and taken measurements from brand new chassis. We did a mix of road and race car repairs, as that was out business.
Lost count of how many Westfield and Caterham cars I built, most builds were mainly Ford or Rover K series and derivatives, including Cosworth, DBA, Lotus TC and Warrior/Holbay producing up to 300bhp in full race build.
The wildest build, however, was for a Japanese customer, main specs were Caterham chassis, Ex F1 BMW Megatron M12 (700bhp at the flywheel on our in house Superflow 902 dyno), Quaife 6spd sequential gearbox with custom bellhousing and Quaife Cosworth diff. It was also running F1 ceramic brakes (can't imagine much fun of the road). We had to hire Brands Hatch for the day, the other engine builder took on this role, being a racing driver (still racing) and held lap records in several classes at different circuits, including Brands, he was certainly the best person for the task. No idea what happened after the car went to Japan, other than the customer had received and was very happy with it.

The cutout in the chassis for the pedals is insane, imagine if that had another crash. Not good. Makes you wonder how many other unsafe cars there are out there that they have repaired.
Incredible..! Every trade has its fair share of bodgers, but if a decorater gets paint on your carpet, it's not gonna maim the occupier. But the welder behind this job endangered the drivers life! Also, a few thousand for that repair..? About £100 of steel used - tops! What an amazing transformation though; Keiths amazing spray job and Pauls bulkhead are probably my fav bits!
I was mega chuffed with that bulkhead to be fair 😃

I'm reminded of a Hillman Avenger (yes I am a bit old!) a while back that had failed it's MoT for a cracked chassis leg. When I went to weld it for my pal, smoke came pouring out of the end - the previous owner had hammered a fence post up inside it, and covered it up with underseal!!!! If you can't weld, is it so hard to find someone who can? Another one was a Mk 3 Corrina rear bumper bracket needing a weld repair. The wing below the mount exploded - it had been repaired previously, and concrete used as filler!!! Lovely job, mind you, the paint finish was perfect.
Well, that makes me feel so much better about my own kit car. Wow.

I think the repairs actually made the chassis even worse than it was. It IS shocking to think the "bodger" thinks its a good repair! Ditto some of the other comments :- criminal, shocking. But after being in the care of you guys it turns out ......awesome. Well done lads.
Love the video,what a great outcome.I have noticed,the K & N topped oil breather catch tank,the K & N hole,needs to be around 25mm (looks a lot smaller)or greater,as you need low pressure venting,what happens if the hole is too small ,you get oil misting and oil coming out of the K & N,which just messes the surrounding area up with oil deposits.Stay safe lads.
Now that this Lad know the extent of physical nature of the serious and dangerous Repair completed by a repair shop, having dumped a few thousand into same, he should Lawyer up and get at least his money back PLUS whatever costs incurred that's the least he would be looking for... that's IF the Company are still Trading... he's really really lucky that he didn't come to some real grief within that suspect structural Shell, and loose control because the miss alignment within lucking within same... Yup that's shocking, especially from a safety aspect. Great job done right mate
I had a Dutton with a 1750 Alfa engine, gearbox and LSD. I fabricated a 5 link for the rear, but spent ages trying to work out the awful bump steer. Eventually I found the steering rack mountings were different heights and crooked from the factory. After fettling it was awesome, but nigh on impossible to corner in the wet. The LSD just made both wheels spin. Fun in the dry though.
Pre-war Fraser Nash cars had a solid rear axle, no diff, no wheelspin. If you watch some of the videos here on UA-cam of them racing in the wet they are unbeatable.
Bump steer is how you can tell a good design from the rest. Even big manufacturers get it wrong from time to time! (honda, ford, etc.)

That was disgraceful frame repair works and you did the right thing sourcing a usable replacement. What come to mind now is to name and shame the previous repairer from this kind of poor workmanship and to possibly save someones life in the future...
It’s not good when stuff like this happens. Luckily no one was injured. A wee bit of care on a job goes a long way.

This is a case study of why you should always, always have an idea or someone with an idea of what you are asking vs what you are getting. The guys that did that job had the audacity to botch it and ask lots of money for it with reservations less than the ones that would actually make them care for putting another human being in danger.
I was amazed at how bent the chasis was after the butcher job.
That would sound absolutely gorgeous with a 'X' plane R1 donk, the standard straight 4 is ok, but the cross plane is fantastic....

I built a Tiger years ago where the chassis wasnt square from new. Car didnt drive properly. The chassis hadnt been jigged properly, Did not keep it long!

Best piece of bodge I came across.....a friend of mine bought an aged Renault 4.....it ran very nice...for some time...after around a 100mls it was no longer ok....him being a mechanic he opened up the engine...the one HARDWOOD piston had worn out....this happened in Madagascar about 35 years ago....

For the sake of safety in the future , the owner of this car should mention the name of the garage who did the bad and dangerous repair work. This will prevent others from getting work done there and may save their own or someone else’s life.

Measure once cut twice must have been the workshop motto wherever that was built. I'm a bush mechanic and even I can use a tape measure and a square to make something flat and true🤨🤷♂️
🤠🤠 Cowboy repair!! Totally unreal, clearly they had no clue what they were doing!! Very well put together now though, only way you could go with a new chassis! Cut the front off that old one and let the kids use the rear half as a climbing frame 🤣🤣

when you come up behind those lotus 7 type kit cars in a queue, they always remind me of those cheapo un-braked trailers you could buy from catalogues.

I know the Guy that originally designed and built the MK Indy, MK being Martin Keenan. That car looks very much like Danny Keenan's old car, with the side pods on.

felt a bit...wobbly.
the a frame had been cut where it met the main frame, then (bird)butt welded... not a solid A frame stretching to the axle, but a butt joint where a 5 foot high sign and the maximum pivoting stress was taking place. what was holding it (them... was a fleet of five) together?
the handbrake mount. one bolt at each end of a 5mm strip of steel.
every single one had broken, or was holding on the last traces of bird poo.
i understand why we are no longer allowed to do homebuilt trailers here, but these were professionally built. and you see it so damn often.
i also learnt that e-brakes on motorbike trailers is a stupid idea :)

All my life...l have repaired fixed cars motorcycles...scooters built specials....you name it..
But looking at those welds and the finished state of that frame...just makes me laugh..
All done on price...sh.t price..
The truth of the matter is simply they do not know how to re-gig..welds move..with the heat..everything has to be fixed down..and then left to cool..once free you can tweek it here and there..but it's how you weld it.

That's such an impressive job! Impressive that you can do it so badly and expect money for it. I would be paying him a little visit for a chat! My favourite bit is difficult cut outs are mindblowing. As is the amount of awful welding and failure to notice its bent as a 9bob note!

I had a concept of replacing the regular engine with a Corvair one (140hp or turbo 180hp) and mounting the trans-axle in back.
It's a pity it took him so long to bring it to you, as soon as it didn't drive correctly he should have had it checked and sued the person or company for doing dangerous repairs to that car.
1st time viewing and made me chuckle that u were so convenient that bulkhead would fire on feet agreed nice job. But what about the flames pouring over the top 😁great vid well done for finding and sorting👍👍

Hi guys shocking work is 1 thing but the truth is if your mate had a bad crash it could have been really really bad even death how some people could live with themselves knowing that there work could end badly is hard to understand honestly they should go to jail but on the high side once again you boys haved sorted it out well done 👍👍👍

Nice little "30mph" test drive at the end there 😅😅. If I was the customer I would be talking to a lawyer especially as I am guessing this rebuild wasn't cheap.
Looks like they whoever runs the "welding shop" just handed the entire job to the apprentice and let him go at it with zero supervision, then panicked when it came time to refit the pedal box.
I like the subtle juxtaposition of the snot-welds next to the original joints. Proper mint indeed by the end, top work, the owner must be thrilled at the final result. Got their old car back like new. :)

Nice work lads, there are some terrible bodgers out there which is one of the reasons I do as much as I can myself! Oh and my favourite bodge is all of it, truly horrendous!

Horrible. Hindsight is a great thing, but I do think that if i had bent a track/kit car of that type i would strip it then send the spaceframe off for repair. At least then you can get eyeball on exactly where the distortion is. Sending the whole car in and saying 'fix it' can be a dangerous game if you have a specialist vehicle. Not a mistake that's going to be made twice.
I think the owner should of said something 4 years ago. I’m on the owners side but the company can claim it didn’t leave like that.

What a dangerous thing to do to someone. I learnt to weld when we were building the Titanic, that seams to be still going strong.....I think.
As a kit car owner, it does occur to me that I'm driving something that someone built in their garage 30 years ago. Fortunately, I've done enough work on it to know its properly put together (I hope). Funniest bodge on yours? I think it's the bent upright; no way it's going to drive right with that. Most of the others are just plain dangerous/stupid.
It must have driven terrible after that repair, luckily I didn’t test drive it before hand
I have a MEV Exocet now and the chassis is so much more substantial than the Locosts that I have had. I have to admit that I wouldn't have even attempted to have repaired the old chassis. I love 7 type cars but they are not like a modern monocoque. The shock is usually enough to twist the chassis. Replacement is the best course of action.

Firstly you need to name the company to protect us from them.
Second I would be straight off to court to get my money back.
