    Louis Armstrong easily has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in the world and it would be difficult to disguise. He should have just nodded and let John Daly do the verbal response to make this set more challenging. Bennet Cerf is too sharp to miss the identity of the person making those grunts.

    At least from what I know, his voice got like that because of several strenuous, frigid seasons of playing on ferry boats and the like. After that, he’d gotten several surgeries to repair his damaged vocal chords, which did all but help. This gave Armstrong the rasp we know him for today

    • @TTFMjock
      @TTFMjock Рік тому

      If so, it was from before his first vocal sessions at age 26, when the rasp was fully formed. New Orleans musicians used to walk all night in the rain to sound like him.

      I think that if his ghost could appear, he would still top the charts and all the groups would carefully listen to discover even more technique, just as they did seventy years ago. No Louis - no Sinatra, Bennett, Clooney, Willie Nelson, and on and on..

    Daly's comments at 3:33 are funny "I wish you could have got higher" followed by Satchmo's comments since he probably is a bit high! Audience didn't get it but I'm surprised the few of them laughed; a bit racy for the 50s.

      Yo sigo sin entenderlo, quizá porque mi conocimiento del inglés es limitado y no he captado el contexto. Pero observo en estos comentarios que a mucha gente le ha hecho mucha gracia esto del "got higher". Incluso hay polémica sobre qué quiso decir. Así que ya veo que no tengo por qué sentirme acomplejado por no captarlo yo.

    I'm white inside

    So in a twisted sort of way you ARE right!

    What stupid posts I'm reading here, trying to make something out of nothing - there's no contempt in the audience, no disrespect, it's not a smattering of weak applause - take it for what it is - early television... people didn't go crazy back then like they're on the Arsenio Hall Show going "whoop whoop whoop" - - they applauded politely!! But putting all that aside - aside from being an amazing talent, I have to say what a SWEET MAN Satchmo was!! So genuine!! He is sorely missed!!
