      Most of the Egyptian planes were lost on the ground during the various surprise attacks conducted by Israel. Simply saying that Egypt lost 452 planes makes it sound like the were lost in dogfights, which is not correct. It's like saying that the US lost 188 planes against the Japanese who lost 29 at Pearl Harbour.

      @showtime112  2 роки тому +10

      Thanks for the comment! Actually, the maneuver made sense. The air base the Mirages were attacking was the most distant one so they were probably low on fuel and couldn't afford a dogfight. The old Soviet missiles were not great and flying low near the desert floor was very likely to defeat the missile's seeker. But unfortunately for the Israeli pilot, the missile worked despite the odds. Just bad luck I guess.

      In combat, pilots often don't engage in a dogfight when in a disadvantageous position but disengage from combat instead. In this case, several factors contribute to that choice. Mirages were attacking Cairo West, which is the most distant airfield attacked so they were probably low on fuel. Also, missiles carried by MiGs were not very reliable, diving to low altitude should have been quite safe. But this time, the missile worked.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  2 роки тому +5

      Actually, Mirages came low not so much to avoid visual detection but to blend with the hot desert floor. Atoll missiles generally had trouble hitting low level targets because they couldn't distinguish their heat well from the ground. But this one could.

    This Trailer looks outstanding wanna see the complete movie. No serious another great historical content by Showtime you can't beat this guy if it comes to create great DCS movies paired with historical content simply outstanding. The History Channel should employ you. If i may ask? I see the Sexy Metal Beauty is not carrying any Shafrir-1s Heat-seeking Missles is this done on purpose or was it that way historically wise? I know at the time of the Six Days War, IDF/AF fighters used either the Matra 530 or the Shafrir I. Both were crap, and neither is credited with any more than a handful of kills during their entire service with the IDF/AF. It wasn't until the introduction of AIM-9s and Shafrir II during subsequent years that any significant amount of missile kills were achieved. And wasn't there no alarm sounding in the Mirage if one is being Locked On ? At the beginning of that mission, there were no four aerial combat kill roundels painted under the canopy windscreen, at the end suddenly there were. Was this because of the MIG-21 ground kills before? I'll prefer the Mirage IIIC anytime over the MIG-21. Why did Mirages do so well? For a number of reasons. Better training and piloting skills is one. Another was that although the Mirage was inferior in many respects to the major Arab fighter at the time, the MiG-21, it had its advantages, which IDF/AF pilots put to good use.Then in August 1966, an Iraqi defector landed a MiG-21 at an Israeli airbase. Thanks to the Iraqi defector Israeli pilots already knew a great deal about the MiG when they encountered it during the war.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  3 роки тому +1

      Oh, thank you once again for so much praise! As for History Channel, I think they mostly do reality shows these days so they would hardly hire me 😂
      As for the missiles, it seems like those Mirages didn't carry them on the mission. Osprey's Six Day War Campaign specifies payload carried by Israeli aircraft for the air base attacks and there's no mention of Shafrirs. Also, in the Mirage III vs MiG-22 Duel book, there's an artistic illustration of this combat and the Mirage is depicted in clean condition.
      Regarding the kill markings on the Mirages, they are not correct. Three different skins are available with different numbers and kill roundels. They are not easy to change and it would be quite hard to track which airframe had a certain number of kills at which date.
      You are right about Mirage's better historical results. A combination of better strategy, training, intelligence and other details were ctucial.

      @ IncoreFirearms Well I read the book "six days of war" from Jeremy Bowen, and I remember he said that it was a cultural thing, the Egyptians trained very little, almost only for parades, the high officials of the armed forces or the high command were people that got there by contacts, not by knowledge, competence or capacity, (like in latin america so sad :( ) while the Israelis on the other hand, trained a lot, they believed they will eventually fight for their contry very existance, and the high command were very profesional and very competent and capable people... All story short, Israelis were very ready, In Israeli collective mind they were so afraid they thought they would loose, so they underestimated their capabilities, they were so stressed that they really worked on their problem... the results speak from themselves, Sun Tsu says that an enemy is more dangerous if he feels trapped, because the enemy will flight harder, very aggresive to the last breath because of the r
      Fear of death, I guess this really happened in the six days war, and I recommend you and everyone that read this that book, if you think an action movie is good... This is better!! You could even tell of how "radio el Cairo" disguised it's own people by telling them they were winnig the war (lies of course, like Mexican or Venezuelan ones), so sure those lies were said, that a few on the Israeli high command were confused, and a few days later, the the ugly truth for the Egyptians and the good facts for the sons of Israel...

    This game is soo badass. Used to play Falcon 3.0 back in the day. DCS is just crazy good. However I looked at the cost.. WOW.. that's a lot of money. Do you have to buy each module via Steam or is there a base game, and a few add ons that would be a good start?

      No need to go through Steam. Just download the basic game here: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/

      Not really an easy shot. It a bit unusual that the missile hit because those R-3S were very ineffective at low level. The Israeli pilot did the most logical thing, he went low because usually, the missile seeker would have trouble telling his plane apart from the warm ground. But it was an exceptionally good missile.

    If more Egyptians were airborne, Israeli casualties would have been far higher - but the Israelis still would have been victorious since their pilots were better trained.
    When the Israelis then turned their attention to Jordan, the Jordanians put up a far better fight for a time because they were trained by the Royal Air Force and flew Hawker Hunters. For example, Flight Lieutenant (who retired as a Group Captain) Saiful Azam, shot down 4 Israelis in 6 days. 3 were confirmed and the 4th crashed enroute to Israeli because his aircraft was hit by Azam but succumbed to its hits. The pilot was killed and this was confirmed by the Israelis.
    Still, the Israelis managed to destroy all Jordanian air bases so the Jordanians operated from Iraq.

      Ooh, my favorite kind of comment!
      Mirages didn't fly straight and steady, they dove for the ground. Why, you say? But fighters never, do that, you say! They always, always dogfight. And you know that because you watched a lot of GS videos, you say.
      Well, for one thing, Inshas air base was one of the most distant bases attacked by Israelis. Which means Mirages didn't have much fuel to spare. Staying for a ten minute dogfight in full afterburner would have been a dumb choice. Especially with the Egyptians having the position of advantage.
      Second, Egyptian MiG-21 was armed only with two very unreliable Atoll missiles which generally had hard time hitting low level targets close to hot desert floor. And in nine cases out of ten, simply flying low would have worked perfectly. Unfortunately for the Israeli pilot, this was one of those ten cases when a crappy missile worked.
