@@jbones7552 that's a very simplistic take. Prince wrote a LOT of songs between 1980 & 1987, and if you've heard his original demo, you can hear why he didn't think much of it. But he also worked really fast, plus, he was a big picture kind of guy, so when he heard THIS version, he most likely also immediately heard inside his head the other elements that he later added to make the finished song. But since he DID work fast, he probably added his parts to it in a day or less, and when it was finished, he knew just where to fit it into his movie, more than anything else.

I heard straight from Brown Mark's mouth on an interview with the Prince Podcast.....that Prince came to the studio at Paisley Park while he was producing Maserati album, with a demo of Kiss and gave it to him and asked what did he think about it, he then told Prince that he didn't like the song and thought it was crap bc it was an acoustic bluesy song along with a slow tempo and that he wanted more up-tempo dance songs on the album. Prince then told him that he could re-work the song and him and Maserati ended up with this version of Kiss. Brown Mark hands this version over to Prince and tells Prince that they were leaving for lunch. He then says that he comes back about 3 or 4 hours later and Prince reworked his instrumentals but it still basically Brown Mark version from the Maserati demo and he changed the vocals to also. Brown Mark tells Prince that he thought he had given them the song and Prince says naw I'll think I will keep it for myself, but promised him writing credits, according to Brown Mark, Prince told him "u know I'm going to take care of u". Well he didn't get co-writer's credit, producer's credit.....no royalties, nada. He went on to say that "that was the stick that broke the camel's back", and cause him to quit.

      .
The Time was Prince -- he was even leasing (paying for) the name. Motown ended up calling Prince for songs because Brown wasn't cutting the mustard. And no self respecting pro musician would 'retire' after a few years in the game -- Mark retired in 1992. Prince's 40 year career speaks for itself.

Well, despite all that you have said, it seems everyone associated with him didn't deserve to be paid. I know Prince was responsible for The Time, but being nasty and not letting them use their original name is a sign of a highly insecure person. And as far as Mark's situation goes, he had personal demons that resulted in him retiring and working at a optic fiber cable company. If he had gotten his credit on Kiss, probably he won't have been broke. Everyone should do their duty and I am sorry to say Prince deprived a lot of people of their dues. This is the same shit that James Brown used to pull on his band mates. But an icon is never wrong. Why? Because he is simply an icon, and icons are not allowed to make mistakes or be nasty. Even if they do, they can do it because they have the power.

No, it's because Prince took the track back before it was developed. This is a DEMO, not a finished version. You can't say with certainty what may or may not have happened with the track because it was never released as a finished Mazarati product. You're correct that Prince wrote the original track, but if you know anything about music you'd know that there are numerous songs songs that are taken from scratch ideas and fully developed for the artist all the way through that become hits for that artist alone. One could argue that Mazarati had the rug pulled out from them before they had a chance to truly make the song their "own." Prince wrote "The Glamorous Life" for Sheila E., BUT she's more well known for the performance of the track because Prince never took the song back.

It's the same basic recording plus bass guitar.
Wiki: Prince decided to finish the song, retaining David Z's unique, funky rhythm and background vocal arrangements by Mazarati's Bruce DeShazer And Marvin Gunn (David Z recounts how the band had expected a song writing credit, and were "pissed" when it did not materialise);[9] he removed the bass line, and added signature guitar and falsetto vocal.

Though Prince made the music and gave it to this band, they arranged the vocals for it which, in my opinion as a songwriter, is the most difficult part . . . and which is probably what gave Prince the inspiration to take this song back. Like many other commenters on this clip, I'm am glad that Prince took this back, but it was kind of a douche bag move on his part.

Brown Mark is inhibited by his own sense of inability to have succeeded as Prince. He is not aware of how that is so prevalent in all his conversations about Prince. Prince put him on the map and that bites. Kiss is an example. The song he worked on was written by Prince and he did some rearranging of the music. This version we are listening to now has no musicality or energy and is flat. The song never be No1. Prince took it back ( it was his) and brought it to life. His video was a winner with his energy and sass to Wendy, putting fun into the song. Sorry Mark but your attitude of being taken down by Prince sucks.

The lyrics are kind of clunky, but Prince had a way of singing around that by making the hops and pauses sound like funky breaks and doing these falsetto leaps where the scansion in the written verse is weak.
Take the line "You don't have to watch 'Dynasty'/to have an attitude.' Here it's flatly delivered, and feels off, maybe because we can hear Prince accelerate and elevate the way he sings the line. Maybe there are a couple syllables too many in the line as written, but when Prince was singing it, who really noticed or cared?
