When you think about it, a hive city is basically just a massive cave system.
An elevated cave system. 🤣👍
Giant hornet nest specifically
You live in a above ground cave
@@marsfreelander5969Well, "above ground" is...relative.
When you think about it your mom is also a massive cave system
Arch has gone very deep to find this regiment
Ho ho, I see what you did there
Boooooooo...
= )
Take my like and leave...
As a hydroponic farmer (aquaponics & vermiponic hybrid set up) I enjoyed and appreciated Arch's usual deep dive style on a completely different level for this episode lol. Good stuff as always Arch
I learned somening new today. Vermiponics. I never knew you could use the water seepage from worm poop as fertilizer.
@@TheDandyMann nothing beats a vermiculture bed as a bio-filter, let alone a general filter for large particles before the water is pumped to the plants
@@NDA8666 that really cool. In the future maybe I'll make something similar to the setup you work on. What kind of fish do you use for the aquaponics side?
@@NDA8666actually many things are better.
@@TheDandyMannanother poser with a tiny bit of info
Regarding Flamers, that's what the Rebreathers are for, make the most out of your own oxygen supply while denying the enemy their's.
The Skaven of Guard Regiments.
Many hydroponic gardeners these days use aquaponics. Which includes fish farms with the system. Today we would use something like Tilapia, the fish poo acting as food for your tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage. I could only imagine the macro aquariums a hive world could sport to compliment their hydroponic stacks.
With the gargantuan amount of plant material being produced, there would be a huge amount of methane being generated from composting. This would surely be used as fuel to power the facilities. Skyscraper sized containers full of rotting vegetation and highly flammable gas, after another, after another... Also, there would have to be massive stockpiles of nitrates, and bio-char for carbon. So on Athos you have planet spanning complex structures, all sitting on top of nearly equally enormous storehouses and tanks of explosive materials. This situation would have to impact how conflicts are managed. One errant Phosphex round, and you could have a continent sized chain reaction haha!
Good point. But then again, after this happening a couple of times, one could assume that they would decentralise the storage of the most volatile materials. Even more so since the giant tanks you describe literally scream 'light me up in an attempt of sabotage'.
😂 maybe they store those as far from vital function areas as possible and post up gaurd forces along with bribed local gangs to encourage....a wide understanding that such materials are best left alone
Hey arch, I have to teach you a military term I learned from my cousin who is in the army. When soldiers are talking about how they illicitly acquired extra gear they do not say that they stole it, it fell off a truck, or that yoinked that shit; they “tactically acquired” it.
"Liberated"
Strategically

Via the fat electrician, fantastic channel .
Beg borrow steal, tried and true.
We don't say tactically - we just say we acquired it, period... & when a soldier dies on the battlefield, the rest of the squad splits your shyt among the rest of us. Not like you'll need it anymore... 🤷
@@nunyadambusiness6902where, when, mos and rank? Your statement makes me think you werent an Infantryman. We dont do that shit to each other.....everyone else, well....fuck POGs
And the Necrons never returned or looked back at all? Every god in the galaxy must like that world to get blessed like that!
Hey arch, would you be able to do a video on the Volacani Cataphracts? They seem like a super interesting traitor regiment that I’m trying to do my blooded as them for my black legion boys.
A surprise to see you cover one of my favourite regiments in the lore. This will be a real treat.
You should do a video on the beastmen regiments. They're still brought up from time to time and I think as a concept they're pretty interesting since unlike ogren or ratlings they're not hyper specialized and are capable of filling out all the roles of a "standard" guard regiment.
I love the idea of a massive self sufficient underground civilization that uses hydroponics as its primary food source. hope to see some similar stuff arch!
Power ..it like everything is all about power. Making intense sunlight isn't cheap or easy. Compared to...idk...USING THE DAMN SUN
yeah. but generating assloads of power is easy when you have access to advanced tech like the imperium@@autopartsmonkey7992
Average Rimworld Enjoyer.
@@autopartsmonkey7992Depends on how you do it. Using mirrors to bounce large amounts in is pretty damn cheap and something we can and do use even with todays tech for pennys on the dollar. Plus keep in mind MOST plants actully do require some darkness. There have been many expariments that prove 24/7 light is pretty harmful. And even if you have space voodoo that alows 24/7 light asorbing plants.
If you have a space based society, then its fairly cheep to set up a few solar mirrors to bounce light down into collectors on the ground compared to many other options.
Daylight for growing is pretty damn easy to acomplish. Plus if you want to argue how its hard to bounce uv light super deep. Put the plants that need the most light at the top and the ones that need little/none down at the bottom.
Heating and cooling would be your big expenses power wise and even that can be mitigated. Go deep enough and use geothermial, dump heat into plants that like it hot and save the actual cooling for only where its really needed.
When you have a planet sized building, even simple low tech solutions are viable and in many cases better then high tech ones since you do hit a wall between cost, efficency and production.
This seems like the perfect regiment to attach one Commisar Ciaphas Cain to. ^^
Please. If Cain was fully getting back into the fight you KNOW that Valhalla will be the first ones to be chomping at the bit to get him back
@@carsoncasmirri3874 With none other than Lord General Sulla as the military leader of the Valhallan force. Just to make things extra painful for Cain XD
Every day we get closer to the sabbat world crusade
I used to grow my whole houses vegetables needs hydroponically ... it was not cost effective even w/o paying for fertilizer (I used carp) but the lights and pumps added nearly doubled my power bill ..
The necron lord literally just went “aight, imma head out.”
More arch. Best lore tuber by far.
I crave more lore videos on guard regiment's. I find them far more interesting than super soldiers in power armor
Wake up. Realize you got up early. Decide to go and prank your sleeping family. As you leave the house, you stomp through the yard, smashing an anthill on your way to the car. You run over another anthill in your gravel driveway. Ants were busy last night, might have to take care of that when you come home.
*Krieg soldiers* : < Death from the surface ! >
*Elysean soldiers* : < Death from above ! >
*Athonian soldiers* : < Death from beneath ! >
I like that planet wide nerd gardening led to cyberpunk essentialy.
"Tunnel Rats rule!"
...oh wait, wrong franchise
I imagine the tunnel rats must have some rat waifus in their rank.
How about one on the Phyrussian regiments Arch. You know Phyruss as one of the guard worlds of the RT Guard and 40K 2nd edition.
yay ! a new regiment lore video from Arch :D hourraaaa !🎉
Where's our sabat worlds crusade
Think he said it would start coming out this winter.
These guys vs Death Korps Engineers... Who would win?
My money's on the men of Krieg.
Krieg have the equipment and training as well as being fanatics, I can safely put my bets on them.
I would place my bets on the tunnel rats, the engineers would give them a run for their money but they do more than underground fighting while the tunnel rats are specialized for tunnel fighting and have experience, those two combined would give the edge to them I feel.
Well which sounds worse? Bopped with an E-tool or stabbed with a trowel bayonet or power garden fork like it were lightning claws?
Digging deep for a good regiment.
Athonos sounds like a pretty sweet setup for a Necromunda style game.
Reminds me of the relationship between Gangs and Politicians in Jamacia. The winning political party would get all the benefits, and the loser wouldn't. Benefits in Jamacia's case would be access to basic amenities that most western societies take for granted, like say a warehouse that provides jobs, but they only provide it for the local residents, as each town is like its own militia, with Jamacian ganags fully in control of these millitant towns, and each town doesn't allow outsiders, without reprisal of a gunshot at said outsider.
2:41 I already "grow high" here we try to keep it away from the government tho...
Neato torpedo* :p
You forgot shotguns. A good trench gun can mist an entire tunnel with pellets, and that tends to ruin people's whole month. Heavy stubber in the right position can hold down an entire corridor and mulch anything remotely courageous enough to try it.
I know our dearly beloved Death Korps are the go-to boys for dogged trench warfare, but the only difference between a trench and a tunnel is a roof. It seems to me the Athonians would excel rather spectacularly if you used them as trench-sweepers.
@Arch why import nutrients? do what we did in ancient times and still do…night soil and night liquid, use processed bodies such as that of fish or animals , heck the imperium doesn’t exactly shy away from cannibalism use human bodies if need be.
the entirety of a plant is not usually edible, so recycle the parts of the plant you can’t eat.
Imagine how spooked these guys are in open field or a forest
Would love a deep dive into the sabbot worlds crusades, theyre one of my favourite areas of the lore
No because it always devolves into gaunt's ghosts and their obscenely thick plot armor.
The first half of this video is just a horticulture lesson
Dont clear rooms by peaking use grenades .
20:30 The units you don't lose this battle, can be used next battle.
Lets see how many loretuvers do the tunel rats vid now
the water treatment plant working nonstop are the plants ... it is called biofiltration which is better than today decantation uv treatment US use now
i run an aquaculture and my biofiltered water is cleaner than municipal water tap water what is a btch is things like anti depressant ....
The Warhammer 40k version of the Rats of Tobruk! Up the colonials!
So, Skaven. These are just human Skaven.
Would love to see one of these on the Vitrian Dragoons, Love your work Arch!
First I've ever heard of this regiment
This is great content, I would be a fan of more guard regiment breakdowns. It taught a lot on the world and structure, making the imperium more interesting.
Thanks for giving this regiment more love than GW has in decades. Thanks for the video.
Not like you care, but I’m going to give you my two cents. I really like these little 20 to 30 minute videos you do on different units or groups. Not just for mankind but all races in the universe, it’s really cool to hear little synopses about each unit, gear and specialty. I know your deep hatred for GW but I really love your analytic statistic driven brain. I’m exactly the same way. I find it wet interesting how the unit was trained, supplied, and moved to/from the battlefield.
So, I have my own guard regiment that are miners using stuff like pickaxes, and dinamite along side other mining equipment, explosives, and typical guard equipment.
Great work again Arch. Thank you ❤
I like these guys. i bet they and the death corps of Krieg would get along quite well and if combined could be absolutely terrifying and could probably take out forces that would absolutely decimate the average imperial guard regiment
I am not sure about that. When it comes to expertise, combat in extremely confined conditions etc., sure. The _attitude_ of the Death Korps is something the Tunnel Rats would have problems with, though, just as pretty much any other regiment.
Imagine being the Master Blaster running the water treatment plant.
You think food production holds power just imagine growing it with the water that isn't treated.
The Skaven of Guard Regiments.. More arch. Best lore tuber by far..
They would almost love serving with the Deathkorps combat engineers (almost being the key word)
I just can't move on from grow high...
Arch confirmation 420..
Also I made this 123 comments feels like a OG kush
I always imagined athonos as an agri-hive world with massive continent spanning hydroponics gardens with huge sewer systems like you described, but the fertilizer production also necessitated the need for massive factory farms for animals all over the galaxy, and a massive mechanicum presence to maintain all this stuff as well as helping to deal with the legions upon legions of servitors and likely cloning facilities on the world used to create the servitors that work the crops. The Tunnel rats work to fight this worlds versions of hive gangs which unlike typical hive world gangs are actually incredibly well funded and equipped interplanetary drug cartels trying to secretly use this world's massive hydroponics gardens to grow their illegal crops for export and the tunnel rats help patrol the gardens and destroy this stuff acting as this worlds DEA, and even extending these services to aid Adeptes Arbites units on other hive worlds.
Satchel charges and white phosphorus filled satchels would be horrific in a tunnel
5-7 pounds of high explosive or white phosphorus would reduce the habitability of a inclosed place remarkably expecially if there's also a small bomb in the phosphorus to scatter it about a little
I wonder if they have to import water somehow. Unlike Earth, where the water stays on planet and gets reused over and over... this world is actually exporting a significant amount of water through crops. Or if they are just slowly depleting their planet's water
I imagine the Tunnel Rats and the Death Korps engineers being best bros. "You love shotgunning people in the back in tunnels? So do we! Did we just become best friends?"
Man, I love your videos, but the background music is the most annoying thing. It's too loud and incredibly repetitive, and in every single video. It's absolutely maddening, to the point where I barely choose to put these on anymore 😟
Wow that planets would have fresh air and High oxygen
Hey Arch, how about a video on Forge Worlds. It would be an interesting topic, specifically on the actual logistical system one has on a system or sector.
Being ignored by a Necron Overlord... wow!
The entire population of the planet won the lottery all at once and they don't even know it. Amazing!
Subterranean warfare basically encompasses any and all fighting throughout spacecraft, asteroid and moon bases as well as hive cities
How have the Orks not heard about this place :]
or even better The Votann! and The Orks!
*Diggy, diggy hole intensifies*
Plottwist: Athonos is actually growing weed for the nobility and rich people and stuff
Do these guys have models, since they don't look like a starship troopers extra or wannabe/cyborg rambo probably not.
You Can Rat My Tunnel Daddy Arch
Go home Slaanesh.
It was on this day that I remembered English isn't your first language. With the interesting mixing of personal and personnel
Hehe "narrow field" good one there. The Imperium's Dungeon Crawlers, no?
So this presents an interesting thought that this world has no manpower tithe. Just as Kreig is not expected to provide food. I suspect that all of these guys are mercenaries or specially recruited by interested parties.
Couldn’t you mass produce ORKS in one of these hydroponic farms
This is actualy the first RoR which I knew jackshit about before watching Your vid :)
21:30 "Athenos is a Necron Tomb World"
Way to save the best for last XD
Crops would be vegetation and thus needing the most evil of gases, CO2.
Thanks for making a video on my request Arch
Any chance you can release this without the annoying music in the background?
LORE FOR THE LORE GODDDD
Why not do a video on Catachan and the regiments from there?
He did. ua-cam.com/video/3nxhByvuv_0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
See here’s my question. Why don’t you have hydroponics on hive worlds?
They do.
Those nice hive veggies are luxury goods reserved for proper people. Anyone without the money or contacts eats shit.
@@LethargicGM Doesn’t really make too much sense though, since you can just make a fuck ton. And it gives the populous something to do, so less chance of revolt. Idle hands and all that.
Seems like they would be good at clearing space hulks.
"(...) might upset the delicate fee-fees of the greenery" 🤣
Can someone help me out. There's a Gaunts ghost novel where the piper boy goes for gaurd training, and gets sent to a massive engine war while training. Alongside the Grey clad regular gaurd there was a brown clad gaurd regiment of cannon fodder. What was their name?
they didnt have a name, they were emergency regiments made up of conscripted camp followers and guard personnel who either didn't have a regiment or committed a crime. Their regiment names were just numbers like R51
It was a penal regiment... numbers, no names...
I am sure they did. The unnamed were dressed in grey. Can you recall the book name?
It's not the piper, though, if I remember correctly, but the adopted son of Tona Criid and Caffran, Dalin (who was actually the son of Gol Kolea). He was put into Reserve Unit AT 137, but I don't remember the names of any other regiments. Oh, the novel is 'Armour of Contempt'.
@@Doomer1984 The book is 'The Armour of Contempt' and the boy is not Brin Milo, the piper, but Gol Kolea's son, who was adopted be Tona Criid and Caffran. The regiment he was in was Reserve Regiment AT 137, but I can't remember any other regiment names in that book for the life of me and I am too tired right now to look it up.
Oooooh... the grim dark TMNT... cowabanga...😅
Praise the algorithm gods

Athonos be like "Food machine you broke."
Necron lord be like "Incomprehensible, I will depart."
You describe hydroponics in much the same way, as regards advantages, I'd describe Axlotl Tanks.
Especially when one's goal is defeating an Extinction Rate which is the consequence of Honored Matres
Tunnel rats, sounds Skaven to me.
