Arch is the whole reason I got interested in 40k and later Warhammer fantasy. I stumbled onto one of his early videos - either the one on Titans or the Imperial Guard was my first - knowingly absolutely zero about the lore with my knowledge limited to what I had seen in a few missions of DoW2. Since then I've enjoyed lots of Warhammer-related videos on youtube by lots of different creators, but none hit the spot quite as well as Arch's stuff. That's why after several years he's still my favorite.
He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright, He checked all his equipment and made sure his pack was tight; He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar, "You ain't gonna jump no more!" (CHORUS) Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, He ain't gonna jump no more! "Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant looking up, Our Hero feebly answered "Yes," and then they stood him up; He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock, He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop, The silk from his reserves spilled out, and wrapped around his legs, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The risers swung around his neck, connectors cracked his dome, Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones; The canopy became his shroud; he hurtled to the ground. He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The days he'd lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind, He thought about the girl back home, the one he'd left behind; He thought about the medic corps, and wondered what they'd find, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild, The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they rolled their sleeves and smiled, For it had been a week or more since last a 'Chute had failed, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) He hit the ground, the sound was "SPLAT", his blood went spurting high; His comrades, then were heard to say "A hell of a way to die!" He lay there, rolling 'round in the welter of his gore, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) (slowly, solemnly; about half the speed of the other verses) There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the chute, Intestines were a-dangling from his paratroopers suit, He was a mess, they picked him up, and poured him from his boots, He ain't gonna jump no more. This reminds me of the first time I've read reference about them (Quote form Shoggy's All Guardsmen Party): > Grav-whats? - Chutes > What-shoots? - Grav-Chutes! > What-whats? - You're guardsmen, you must know what Grav-Chutes are! You know: small, backpack-size anti-gravitic devices that allow Imperial troops to float safely to the ground on a column of anti-gravitic force from any height in a world's gravity well, including sub-orbital heights. > Ohhhh you mean screamy-fally-deaf-packs. Yea we're familiar wif dose. Whatchu doin with em? Cause I know a guy who knows a guy... - They're for you to deploy from the shuttle with. You just said you're familiar with them, surely I don't need to draw you a picture. >What? Are you mental? When I say "familiar" I mean we've pulled a buncha dem off deaders. None of us 'ave ever used one; you can tell, 'cause we're not pancake-shaped. - That's unfortunate, you have two hours to learn how to operate one. I'll assist in your training, is there a nearby cargo bay or lift shaft we can use? >Sahhhhge, the baby Space Marine is tryin ta kill us Sahge. Why's everyone always trying ta kills us Sahge?
Surely a bullpup design for a las weapon, taking into account the barrel length would actually be the same as the long las rifles, would be a great option considering how common urban, mechanized and tunnel fighting is in 40K and that isn't mentioning good boarding actions. Also, the Elysian pattern looks awesome.
I had an Elysian guardsman as my character in a tabletop P&P game. The fact that I survived the campaign is one of my personal proudest gaming achievements lol. Drop in, under equipped and without backup, then accomplish the mission by any means. Then watch GW forget you exist. The life of an Elysian.
We already did the jokes about Catachan literally eating daemons alive with zero human involvement and now I kind of wish there was a novel featuring a greenskin infested space hulk popping into the Elysium system. On every other planet this happened to the Guard would scoff at how the PDF is no use at all, this time they would probably have cleaned the thing out before the Terminators arrived.
Arch, you are one of the few content creators on UA-cam I’d trust to advance 40ks story line or to do a tv show. Very few people understand the “feel” and “soul” of warhammer as you do. Any nobody can read of the lexicanum page, only someone with some talent and passion can take any topic of this giant convoluted universe and make it entertaining and actually informative. I’m sorry the mode r internet is too sensitive for you, GW could use you as a consultant, slurs and all.
I've gone down a bit of a Heavy Drop regiment rabbithole the last few years with Harakoni Warhawks, making any army which I am absolutelty sure is utterly illegal to deploy in a game but contains equipment, weapons and units that make sense for their role, Scout Snipers, Rapier Laser Destroyers, Heavy lift Valkyries modeled on Chinooka (if I ever get it finished) and K-9's as a standing for an Imperial Ground scanner unit.
Ah yes, conscription is a hypothetical possibility... When the Imperial Guard has worked through all the volunteers that they already have to turn away because everyone wants to join the elite formation that's doing similar things to what they are already experienced at doing, but in settings conducive to more war stories that can be traded for free amasec if you survive.
I was given orders to cross the Euphrates and into sadr city. I was told I’ll be there for 4 days of operations. I packed for 3 days. I was there for 66 days during the battle of sadr city.
The Drop Troopers have a special place in my heart. My first 40k novel, ever, was Dark Apostle. Not knowing a whole lot about 40k at the time, I thought they were so damn cool. And then I found Forge World and their Elysian range, and I was over the moon. Only, by the time I had money (and I was seriously considering doing them as an army), the range was long extinct :(
One of the coolest sets I seen from Forgeworld and it sucks they stop making them. I did not know much about them so thank you for the lore video Arch.
A friend of mine bought an army of them waaay back when they were still making them, complete with drop-sentinels and Tauros. I'm jelly every time he puts them on the tabletop 😂
There's some 3rd party Elysians I found at Wargames Exclusive I think. I would just grab them and some Cadians. Run them as Cadians and just say they're dropping into the deployment zone. Not as great as official rules but close enough. :/
Ya, I’d say just run a very dressed-up Scion army with some Sentinels ,hellhounds, Devildogs and/or Banewolfs thrown in. Maybe some heavy weapon’s squads sprinkled here or there.
The _Tirpitz_ was an extremely effective unit, despite never actually engaging any enemy warships. Her mere presence required the Royal Navy to commit battleships to escort every convoy going to Russia, forcing the RN to burn way more in the way of fuel, people, and maintenance costs than that Panzer division ever would have. The concept of the fleet-in-being is a powerful one.
IRL bullpup rifles have some drawbacks compared to conventional layouts, but power isn't one of them. Since you still have a full-length barrel, the propellant still has just as much time and space to accelerate the bullet. Bullpups have other drawbacks, like being a bit more awkward to change magazines, being more expensive/complex to make, and a few others that get into the more subtle side of combat shooting, like somewhat mushy triggers and the center of gravity shifting as you empty the magazine, but shot for shot they're just as powerful as any other rifle with the same cartridge and barrel length. And they look cool, which helps even things out.
I dont get it, why do people hate arches videos so much? He seems to be the most the most generally knowledgeable about 40k in my eyes Entertaining too
The Bismarck and Tirpitz at least served to bind some attention and enemy forces with their mere existence. And Crete . . . 42k defenders, beaten by 20k attackers. Attackers lose 25% and end up with 15k Men and the Defenders are basically at 0k effective combat str . . this may be a bit of a stalinian outlook on things but to me that is an outcome that is way worth the investment especially for such an important tactical position . . .
The Luftwaffe, already in trouble, was mortally wounded in crete; pretty much their entire logistic/transport aviation arm got smacked; though it hadn't recovered from a pretty nasty wounding it got in the fall of france.
So Arch one correction I have concerning bullpups. The barrel length will still be the same as an average rifle. The Tavor has a 16in barrel like an M4 but most of the Tavor's barrel is hidden by the rifles housing. Still great video
The assault on Eben Emaul is high on your history video lists I take it Arch. That goes without question. Everything... Retrorocket gliders, flammenwerfen, shaped charges, along with a few other cutting edge toys all applied with precision timing and conducted with elan and daring. Magnificent action from conception to recon/intelligence to planning to research and development for everything to come together as it did during the operation.. Sonderlehrgang z.b.V. "Oranienburg" *Brandenberg* would be a great subject as well.
my favorite guard regiment, reminds me of ODST's. I love this regiment that I have started to print some for tabletop, also love how they work with RGT which are my favorite chapter
Always thought for an imperial commander I would want the Elysian drop troops for dropping and and holding objectives with Murodian iron guard to relive and hold those positions along with Elysian for shock assaults supported by the death core to capitalise of the shock assault and provide the mass troops heavy armour etc to really push deep into enemy lines after the fronts lines have been cracked by the shock assault, I think it would be interesting for u to do a video on how some of these specialised formations could work best with each other to really play off of each other’s strengths
I love that it's currently 6:30 in the morning where I live and I'm marching from some low life Entertainment Establishment towards my current housing and I'm listening to storys far beyond what my life could ever portray. I'm fine consuming Hummus while intensly inebriated and enjoying the soothing voice of Arch.
This. This is why I’ve been subscribed so long. I used to save some of your playlists when I was on deployment. It provided good entertainment, audio and background noise when the thrum of the ship’s engine and scream of aircraft engines got a little bit stale.
It’s not uncommon for 10-20% of their landing forces to expire *on the way down* you then typically then have these guys behind enemy lines, so now what? Do you have them break out? Do you have them make a beach head and goal for a assault? Do you try to pick them up somehow? There’s a reason the guys the Germans picked were considered a very special type of crazy. The Germans saw their attrition rate and said no more of that. The Americans saw that and copied it. The Soviets saw that and tried to do it without the cloth to slow them down. The Americans though? They turned jumping out of a plane into a art in ww2. There’s a film that shows just how incredible it was, I’ll try to dig up the name and there was a German high ranking commentary on this art that I’ll try to dig up as well.
Don’t forget that just because they’ve got the fanciest of equipment doesn’t mean that they are allowed some slack and the imperium ever so generous is always looking to get as much bang for their buck as possible, ie deploying them in some of the most brutal and most hazardous environments only a kriegsman might jump at the prospect of, again it’s not fighting humans in a fair and eqaual situation or even hoards of battle droids or an angry Klingon, where some requirements may require them jumping head long into the middle of ork held territory, with a flashlight and light equipment
Arch, can you make a video on the future of Warhammer Fantasy and AoS? Looks to me like GW is slowly starting to transition back into the good old days, though some things like the Idoneth Deepkin look interesting (granted, we'd get into the same problem WoW has ie. too many Elves). Same with Kharadron Overlords. Hell, when they make the Hobgoblins, they can use the Kruleboyz as a basis. We could always have some Orkoids that prefer cunning over brutality.
Just finished listening to the book Scions of Elysia weird that I just yesterday listened to it then arch puts out a lore video bout them kinda cool in a weird way.
Man I love Arch’s videos if not for the information then how it is presented with fancy verbs and the like, speaking of Information Arch could the next video be about Cthulhutech?
I always feel like the people who write battles in 40K forget that there are space ships, and an orbital bombardment would effectively win the battle with few losses in 90% of cases.
this reminds me of when i was playing a 2v2. 8k point total game and brought. 3 infiltrator squads. 1 intercessor squad. 2 predators. and 2 storm talon gunships. those gunships had 12 S6 heavy attacks 6 S5 heavy attacks on top of being hard as hell to hit because i was the only one fielding air so no one had an dedicated anti air very much a vraks moment
WH40k doesn't understand bullpups if that's the official lore on that specific lasgun. Bullpups have the same length of barrel, the starting point is just moved further back into the stock instead of infront of the trigger.
Whats often left out regarding the drop troops is that they have a much higher number of storm troopers which are likely their own kind of drop boys plus much like the Cadian Kasrkin. There is artwork on google of what they might look like and theres even a drop troop regiment called the Harkon warhawks (spelling) that look like airborn Kasrkin or in otherwords bloody bad ass
bit off topic but something to keep in mind about the Tirpitz, is consider how many resources the allies used against it, so it did still serve a purpose for germany.
To be fair, the Tirpitz did, by just sitting in her fjord cause the brittish a lot of headache. Ships that could otherwise be used to better effects in other theaters had to stay close by, if she were to venture out. And a ridiculous amount of time and resources were spent in order to put her out of commission. Churchill was absolutely obsessed with her for years. So i have to say, that even if she didn't exactly do what she was built to do. She still did a great job. When it came to Bismarck. The ship she sunk was THE Hood! The pride of the royal navy, and in a way that the brittish thought impossible after the lessons learned, and precautions taken since jutland. This shook both the population and admiralty of brittain to its core. She also crippled The Prince of Wales badly enough to force her to flee into dry dock. So in conclusion. The sisters were expensive gambits, as all big machines of war is. And even if they didn't actually fulfilled their roles as intended, they still had some success. Bismarck, even in defeat shook the britts to their core. Of course she would have been even more successfull if she would have been able to clear the denmark straight and prey on the convoys providing brittain with necessities. But she wasn't a complete failure. And the same can be said about Tirpitz. Binding up a lot of naval power that were desperately needed elsewhere for years. And yes. I know german warships should be called "He". But old habbits die hard. 😅
1:12 Chimeras are too heavy for a Sky Talon, weighing in at 38 tons (...approximately. With so many Forge Worlds you're going to have some deviation. Just like how I'm between 5'4" and 6'5" depending on what convenience store I walk out of and how much they cared to measure and correctly place the "Suspect Height" sticker on the door frame.) It can "only" transport 14 tons or so. That said, there's a small APC (and I do mean small) called the Centaur that is basically the size of a Bren carrier (or even smaller) that you can somehow jam 5 people into if you don't care about crew comfort. And that weighs only 6.2 tons. I have *_no idea_* how it has almost twice the hull thickness of a Sentinel and is somehow lighter, however.
And a derivative of their lasgun's design is basically a las-FAMAS in Darktide, and is one of my favorites in that game, though it does annoy me that the only lasguns that are actually full auto in Darktide are relatives of a design that is explicitly stated to be semi-auto only in the lore. Granted, it would be the perfect weapon for the Elysian PDF troopers and all of their boarding actions, which might be where they got the idea. Introduce several novel variants of the pattern, particularly the Mark VI as a las-FAMAS that would excel for shorter duration high intensity engagements. The Mark VI shown in Darktide would probably be the winner of the lot. The Mark IV, which is absent from the game but would behave like the Kantrael pattern lasguns in game, would be what gets issued to the guard regiments for more conventional paratrooper work. Very little cross-training would be needed, and spare parts would be interchangeable to the extent that Mechanicus orthodoxy allows for it.

One of my favorite regements. Thanks Arch!
This. This is why I’ve been subscribed so long. I used to save some of your playlists when I was on deployment. It provided good entertainment, audio and background noise when the thrum of the ship’s engine and scream of aircraft engines got a little bit stale.
23:47 an underbarrel grenade launcher for a guardsmen? Yes!
Agreed for me it’s as entertaining as an audio story plus as a massive military buff I enjoy comparing other sci fi universes and ours against 40K
Crete also wiped out a huge chunk of what remained of the Luftwaffes transport arm after the mauling it got in France '40.
The only regiment that can match if not have higher fatality rate then the Death Korps of Kerge.
"you might ask why you would want automatic mortar?"
no barch, question should be "why wouldnt you want automatic mortar?"
A girl asks for an angel to come down from the heavens to save her family
Elysian Drop Troopers: ETA is 3 minutes
I have waited for literlly 6 years for this
The scariest thing about an orbital drop onto Rophanon is the threat of rophanidosis.
Keep an eye on your six, troopers.
I love the Elysians. Very sad that they've been lost to the "streamline".
Recently listened to the three chapter audiobook for the Elysians, was pretty neat
I love your lectures on Imperial guard regiments, they are the reason I became a fan of 40 K recently
Great video and the Elysian drop troops and Harkoni Warhawks are my favorite style Guardsmen. Along with the Tanith First and Only.
TOW is gonna be a Forge World game, so it's pretty much DOA until they make plastic kits.
Just finished listening to the book Scions of Elysia weird that I just yesterday listened to it then arch puts out a lore video bout them kinda cool in a weird way.
Arch u were my gateway drug into warhammer. No one does it better mate.🎉❤
Man I love Arch’s videos if not for the information then how it is presented with fancy verbs and the like, speaking of Information Arch could the next video be about Cthulhutech?
I always feel like the people who write battles in 40K forget that there are space ships, and an orbital bombardment would effectively win the battle with few losses in 90% of cases.
can't forget the Funny Taurus ATV, the utterly goofy super electric Jeep, with mounted duel lascannons zooming around at high speed.
Love these long videos thanks Arch and praise the Emperor ✊
A highly skilled elite formation, not to be thrown away willy nilly, i give you the Iron Hands in the novel "wrath of iron"
this reminds me of when i was playing a 2v2. 8k point total game and brought. 3 infiltrator squads. 1 intercessor squad. 2 predators. and 2 storm talon gunships.
those gunships had
12 S6 heavy attacks
6 S5 heavy attacks
on top of being hard as hell to hit because i was the only one fielding air so no one had an dedicated anti air
very much a vraks moment
This man speaks English as a second or third language better than the vast majority of Americans, myself included.
My absolute favorite, Epic, onepagerules, i have multiple armies in multiple scales because they are just too cool
WH40k doesn't understand bullpups if that's the official lore on that specific lasgun. Bullpups have the same length of barrel, the starting point is just moved further back into the stock instead of infront of the trigger.
I like the Elysian just because of the bulpup lasrifles. Need more of that.
So many historical references please Arch do a history video I would absolutely love and appreciate it
I said "Uuuuhhhh droptroops" out while clicking the thumbnail. This better be a good one to justify my verbalized excitement!
Making a Russian themed version of these guys even found a hind Valkyrie 3D model
Probably my favorite regiment, mainly because they have bullpup lasguns 😂
My long-lost love of Imperial guard
Arch deliverying Lore gold as usual. Keep it up man.
Thanks for the video, Arch, always love watching
FLYING red shirts!
3:20 - As in "WAAAGGH!!!"
52:00 - Ah, you speak of a pyrrhic victory.
Another interesting guard unit that no longer has models GW at its finest
bit off topic but something to keep in mind about the Tirpitz, is consider how many resources the allies used against it, so it did still serve a purpose for germany.
The "Hold My Beer" regiment. Always a great story.
FOR THE ALGORITHM!
THE EMPEROR DEMANDS!
blood upon the risers intensifies
The Elysians are a scalpel. The Death Korps of Krieg is a hammer. Gotcha
Loved it. Thanks a bunch for the effort and the video. You the man Arch.
man i was just thinking about how this video hadn't been made yet
I just noticed that this was released only 3 days ago... IM HERE NOW
To be fair, the Tirpitz did, by just sitting in her fjord cause the brittish a lot of headache.
When the imperial guard is so lethal that they have to nerf themselves into fighting as regiments
About time. Lol Been waiting years for this one. Glad you still do these videos, Arch
Orbital Drop Shock Baneblade
Arch is really the best. No drama just relaxing fun. Thanks man !!
Loving the degree of historical context.
Thanks, waited for this one for sooo long!
Love the historical examples. Keep up the good work
We need more of these longer videos!
a what if series about what if vraks was handled by the Elysian drop troopers would be nice. and probly long enough to be profitable
Been waiting for this video ever since the astra militarum lore video some 6 years ago
Nice dive all around. Good Job.

Chimeras are too heavy for a Sky Talon, weighing in at 38 tons (...approximately.
The Elysian Drop Troopers are most likely modeled form French paratrooper with there bullpup rifle resembling the FAMAS.
