Mike, the power of a relay, no pun intended, pretty cool. I've watched your old video on vw wiring many times, keep up the good videos...Dave.

Hi Mike, good explanation of the use of relays. All they are is a gate controlled by a magnet to open and close a circuit. They are important for a couple of reasons. One being a stopping point for wiring mid point on a vehical. Like a junction box. 2nd like a fuse will stop a short by shutting down to prevent wire bundle fires.

If the bulbs only use 2A or so and you have 40A relays, why not just run a wire from each of the four bulbs you want to flash to a central location, tie them together, and just use one relay (plus the blinker can) to flash all 4 of them?

they will feed back. you need separate circuits. 3 relays. 40a relay is not necessary.

this setup is very simple but it would have beem much simpler if you have used 3 big diodes, simply the blinker relay, the switch and the diodes that feed each branch of the circuit so when the switch is OFF, each circuit is independent, when the switch is ON, each circuit is linked and one of the advantages over the simplicity is that when you apply the brales, the front flasher continues to do their job, whish is not the case with the relays.

Yeah that would work pretty good I guess with diodes

Hi Mike, I’m in the process of retiring my Vw, t2a bus. It was imported from the USA. Will I need to do this to have flashers?. It didn’t have them as standard and the wiring loom I got, was from Wolfsburg west direct. Will I just need one due to the wiring?. Many thanks 😊

Mr. What happens when you turn on flashers and hit the brakes

you dont use them both at the same time. and the brake lights will still light up just the front lights may stop flashing while your braking.

Hi Mike, I’m in Oz and have turn signals on all four corners of my kombi, so I guess I would use 4 relays? Thanks Jp

you could do it that way. or you could do it with 2......if your blinkers are on the same circuit for front and rear you only need 2 relays 1 for the right one for the left. Late models have a separate bulb for the blinker. Easier to do. on early ones you need 3 and use your brake lights for the rear circuit.

Will this work on a 6V system?

    • @Mikefngarage

yes just use 6v relays. and 6v flasher. same principle
