    I don't think the window lights could ever be that bright at the scale distance of 1/5000. The light rays will scatter so much we probably can't see them, that's why you need the clear plastic to tone the brightness down.

    Great job! I'm in the midst of building the old AMT kit and I was dreading the number of fiber optics I was going to need. Seeing this has me wondering if I can use the same approach for that kit and save myself a lot of heartache.

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому +1

      Don't get me wrong, I think fiber optics look great but I personally don't enjoy using them. Just too much work for me. The mode was designed to be lit without them. Using fiber optics certainly goes the extra mile, just depends on you as to how much that mileage is worth. One way to keep the lights from shining through the windows as I pointed out in the video is to apply canopy glue to help disperse it. Someone suggested that and it makes sense. I think you'll be happy with the model this way. Hope that helps and thank you for watching

      Hello again
      If you have built the Zvesda kit I would be interested in your opinion between the two? I think Bandai has the edge on detail but the Zvesda is nearly double the size and almost half the price - lacks a bit in detail but that can easily be fixed with some work.

      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому

      @@IainHamilton Hey lain....I actually wasn't even aware of the Zvesda until I got into this project but from what I know, it's pretty much what you said. The Bandai is great on details but small in size. The Zvesda obviously is much larger and I've not seen it person to know how it compares. I think it comes down to the space you have for display, at least for me anyway Lol. As much as I think these big models are cool, the Bandai kits have been prefect for me. Fantastic job ISM. The lighting in particular is impressive. By the looks of your footage you got the intensity spot on. Your strategizing of lighting is extremely useful to watch. I really like the way you adapt and simplify everything, yet still get awesome results. I have this kit yet to build (standard version) and at first I thought a wash was a no-brainer, but the more videos I watch it seems to be a key decision. You seem to have got it just right with the diluted grey. I wonder if the Light Grey Vallejo wash would give the same results? I The only thing here I'm not 100% convinced by is the panel painting. Do you think it would be madness (or impossible) to follow the etched lines on the kit when doing this? Another important decision with this kit is the colour. It seems like everyone come up with a different shade of grey. I was thinking of using Tamiya Sky Grey with a touch of white, but you made me think the Model Master grey might be worth a try. Were there other options you considered here? Anyway, this is another first class build from you my friend, thanks for taking the time to share it.

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому

      Hi lain...good to hear from you and thank you for all the nice comments. I was debating between white or gray but decided on going with a compromise of light gray mixed with white. I remember seeing the miniature on tour and recall it not being completely white. As for the paneling, I really didn't even have that in mind to do until I saw it on Model Chlli's channel. I liked the way it looked so I went with it because it adds variation vs being monochromatic. As much as I love SWars I've always thought the Star destroyer was a bit plain looking. You could go along with the etched panel lines, in fact I did that with some of the panels that I painted. As for the wash I'd highly recommend it but I really do prefer it being subtle so the light gray might be a good choice to try. The nice thing about washing is that it really helps to emphasize all that surface detailing. I'm pretty sure you'll like it. Worse comes to worse just paint over it if you don't but it really does add to the model. Hope that helps.

  • @JimPaulJr

    If you research the actual studio model it states that the filming model was painted with different shades of white, and no washes or weathering was done. To keep the lights from shimmering, I applied micro Krystal Kleer to the inside of all the windows.

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому

      Good idea with the krystal Kleer. I assumed the pictures included in the instructions showing the model with paneling was the studio model. The model pictured was white with various shades of gray. Perhaps that wasn't the studio model after all. Thanks for watching Jim, always appreciate it.

    Fantasy Flight Games has released their SSD for the Armada game, and from what I've seen, it looks great, just like pretty much all of their miniatures. (But we know Bandai would simply say: "Hold my sake!") 😁

    Nice work on the lighting, almost every build video I've watched seems to address their concerns of the lighting feature on this model, more the awkwardness of having to remove the top section to merely switch it on and off. You've tackled it very well opting an external power source with the batteries mounted inside the base of the stand.
    I have to agree with the inner light box being the main issue for the top section not wanting to close properly, I wonder if shaving it down a bit so it sat lower in there would fix that?
    Does your SD also suffer from the bow slightly curling upwards? as it's also been mentioned by modelers building this kit.
    Sweet job on the subtle wash and paint work.

      @@InterstellarModeler Cheers, thanks for the reply.
      I just bought the lighted kit version and was studying some references of how builders are addressing some of the kits most talked about issues, mostly being the lighting box preventing the tower structure from closing tightly, the many light leaks and the bowing of the front.
      I personally think some builders naturally went into a comfort zone with Bandai producing all these high quality snap tight Star Wars kits and they weren't prepared or simply didn't expect to do any extra leg work on this particular model.
      I may try building it without the light box and experiment with the rest.
      Glad to hear your model isn't suffering from the upward bow syndrome, hopefully mine wont have a turned up nose when completed lol.
      I practically have all the same kits as you do, (I watched your model collection video) I'm a fan of your work and your approaches with lighting and customizing are just simple logic and very inspiring for my own builds.

      Hi...sorry for the delayed reply...they're all prewired to handle up to 12V. It is best to use shrink tube for protecting and insulating the soldered connection. . Hope that helps

    Heya! As it’s easier to get you here, there is an item on one of the Facebook Sites that you might be interested in especially as you have your own printer. It’s a V-Wing Fighter Kit and it looks really good! Tried to paste the link but it doesn’t work! Check it Out!

    Beautiful work!
    I have this lighting version of the kit. Is the flickering of the engines by your customization or is it already done like that by Bandai for the kit? I haven't tested my LED pack yet so, I have no idea.
    Love your work and tutorials.

      I didn't end up using the lighting kit actually. The engines were lit with prewired 3mm flickering cool whites. Thanks for watching

    Do you have any videos where you go into specific using the Model wash? Does the wash dry before cleaning it off? Would you recommend using this Model wash on the MK II Colonial Viper from Mobieus? Wanting to take my building to the next level using a wash to highlight panels. Love your work

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому

      Hi....thanks for your kind compliment. Doing the wash is pretty much what you see at 14 minutes into the video which is why I didn't go into further detail. The success of the wash really depends on the depth of the panel lines. In short the process is: Apply a gloss coat, once dried apply the wash > allow it to dry > dampen a small section of a towel/old Tshirt with Vallejos Airbrush thinner > gently wipe off. I do think it would go well with the Viper but you may have some challenges. Looking at my own Moebius Viper, the panel lines that run perpendicular to the nose and fuselage are definitely deep enough. The ones you'd have some trouble with are those that run parallel, they're more shallow. It's worth a try. Worse comes to worse just wipe it completely clean off if it doesn't look right. That's assuming you dont want to deepen those panel lines further with a scribing tool. Hope that helps.

    Does this kit have pre drilled holes for the window lights? I may have missed that

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому +1

      Casey Cowsert yep, all pre drilled. I was skeptical the LEDs would light them all but it worked out very well.

      Casey Cowsert i would say get the kit without the lighting which will save $. You can do it LEDs you can buy separately. I do think it’s a great kit

    Can you recommend the best Chrome spray paint in a can please. I am painting brass tubing and it must look like chrome. Thanks.

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  4 роки тому

      Sorry for the late reply. I'm afraid I don't have enough experience with comparing chrome sprays especially since I no do everything with an airbrush. One suggestion would be to go onto Starshipmodeler's or Culttvman's facebook pages. There are tons of modelers there. I'm sure you'll get a plethora of answers if you post the question. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thank you for watching.

    I Love Your Builds as Ever- But Imperial Star Destroyers are Not Completely Grey?! They are, or should I say the Studio Prop is a Multitude of Worn Insignia and Tamiya White, Light, Sea Grey, Warm Grey. The Panel Work is Generally Feathered? Great Model Nevertheless!
