Chanel Vamp became super popular in 1994 when Uma Thurman wore it in the classic diner/ dance scene in Pulp fiction. That’s when I got my first bottle of it.
Due to the production time difference between Pulp Fiction and the release of Vamp/rouge noir - It was unlikely to impossible to have been Chanel Rouge noir. Pulp Fiction was released the same year (May) the OGOG Vamp was improvised by a Chanel makeup director Dominique Moncourtois using...black marker over red polish! Considering Pulp Fiction's filming was complete before Dominique was asked to come up with a nail color that would look extra good in black and white film and was using markers around the time Pulp Fiction was released, it couldn't be Vamp. We actually know which lipstick was used (yay!) but the polish was never actually ID'd by the artist. The lipstick was Chanel Rouge Coco Destinee (which...I used to the stump and dug out so all I have left is the case!!!!) so I think that is where the "polish must also be Chanel" comes from! But Mrs Mia Wallace was the reason I hunted down a version of this shade!
Even before Pulp Fiction, Vamp was super-popular. It was popular from the second Chanel showed it on the runway for their (IIRC) fall/winter collection in spring of 1994. The reason it became so popular is that, before Vamp, few mainstream nail colors were so rich and deep in color, but also such a good formula, too. Vamp also opened the door to colors other than reds, wines, pinks, oranges and nudes. It was nearly impossible to find any other colors before Vamp. Not that the traditional manufacturers hadn't tried to introduce them (Revlon had yellow, green, blue and purple nail polish in the 50s!), but they never seemed to take off. The 80s were also much more conservative in some fashion styles than people realize. Nail polish was actually more exciting and doing more interesting things in the 60s and 70s than in the 80s-- the decade when women were entering the work force like never before, and we all thought we needed to be "corporate." Back then, corporate (and even small businesses) frowned on nail polish to begin with, but purple nail polish? Not no but hell no could you wear that if you expected to have a successful career. If you had to wear the stuff, then red, pink, orange, clear. Nothing else. That got...confining. Some of the offices I worked in, they only allowed clear polish. I'm not kidding. Then came Vamp. Some of its success was because women had obtained enough power in the work force that they no longer needed to conform 100% to fit in or move up to have a career. But some of it was that, after all those drudgery years of the same old clear coat, reds, pinks, and oranges on their nails, they were ready for something new and different and daring. Vamp was the right product at the right time.
So true, wearing red was the most daring you could wear in the corporate world. Pulp Fiction really normalized wearing dark colors and brought them into the mainstream and I’ve loved Vamp ever since.
I would like to point out that the wilder colors were plenty popular with high school girls in the eighties. Not everyone was a working girl that decade.
You did an excellent job finding dupes. This ‘vamp’ color reminds of the ‘oxblood’ color everyone was crazy for about 10 years ago. I just got an ILNP ‘black orchid’ which fits into this ‘Vamp’ dupe group except for the ILNP has a subtle holographic effect that is very pretty.❣️
I bought Vamp in 1994 when it came out! I felt very cool wearing it to clubs. Ha ha. It's different from Rouge Noir in that you're right- Vamp has a very subtle shimmer which gives it more depth. Edited to add- when Vamp came out there was nothing else like it out there. Really attracted Chanel to a younger generation.
I also remember when it came out and Uma Thurman wore it in Pulp Fiction (the movie still gives me the chills). You are right, there was nothing like this back then. We quickly forget how limited colors were back then.
It's weird to think about how nuanced beauty products were so hard to find as apposed to now where you can find so many dupes for a color, a formula, or even just the variety of things that exist for every preference out there.
I went through about 5 bottles of Vamp and then switched to Vixen. It was popular as it looked black with the burgundy undertone and had a cool factor.
😂😂😂 I like how she pulled his pinky because he didn’t go alone. That will be me telling my husband “go along Robert” 😂😂😂 love it. Love this couple…you guys are the real deal.
Great video guys! I especially appreciated the view against the black background... I had difficulty discerning differences between the colors until you introduced the black background and then it was immediately obvious and helped tremendously! Tyfs💜
☺️i have OPI Party at Holly's, I got it from TK Maxx in 2019/2020 I got it because I got another polish in the same colour (also from tkmaxx) called Jasper by Mavala, I was in love but was also nervous because the Mavala is a mini 5ml bottle that might run out sooner. I love off black reds!
Thank you for the comparison’s! My daughter had ESSIE Wicked years ago. It was her favorite. She might still have it, but she has hard gels on right now, so doesn’t polish.
Great video, Great comparison. My go to is Essie's Wicked but now that I saw you swatch OPI Party at Holly's I remembered it and purchased it online. Still available. What a great application it has! Thanks!
I remember when Vamp came out. I was a broke college student and couldn't afford it. I had to get a drugstore "dupe" instead (Revlon Vixen if I remember correctly).
Chanel Rouge Noir has always been falsely rumoured to be the polish worn by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction in the diner scenes… 🙊 The makeup artist said she was wearing a now discontinued MAC polish in Dubonnet iirc
I’m too young to remember original Vamp craze, but when Lauren Conrad wore Black Satin on the Hills it made black nail polish HUGE for the first time in a way that wasn’t just goth. I’m sure it was popular before then but for teenage girls that was a big moment haha. She wore a lot of dark shades even in the summer, I think mostly Chanel.
I was going to mention Vixen by Revlon. OPI Black Cherry Chutney is also super dark but has a shimmer. I have them both and love them. Years and years ago, I'm saying 1977 Dior had a very, very dark red like the ones your are watching. It was called Tuberose and it had a matching lipstick. I had both of them. It was the darkest nails and lips around at that time. I was just out of college. Anybody else remember Tuberose?
Hi Martha! Sadly I don't remember Tuberose but the name rings a bell :) Black Cherry Chutney is more purple, I swatched it recently, I love it though and I love the slight shimmer.
Great dupes and video! I have Zoya’s ‘Sam’ and it seems like it would also be a pretty good dupe for Rouge Noir. I knew nothing about this Chanel polish because up until recently I only wore shades of red and pink sheers and didn’t pay any attention to nail polish news. But last summer, I finally ventured out and bought a cyan color polish (my favorite color) and I was surprised how much I loved it. I now have about 75 polishes in a range of colors. Because I’m immunocompromised, I mostly buy online since Covid and your informative videos have helped me so much in deciding what colors to purchase so thank you!
I have been searching for OPI “Party at Holly’s” for years. I am thankful that I do have “I’ll Have A Manhattan” from the same “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” collection.
I had been hunting for a dupe for that Chanel shade too and then found the Sally Hansen gel in Wine Stock. Cabernet with Bae is too burgundy but Wine Stock is more red. I love it, thanks for the video!
This was great because I spend too much money trying to find the right dupe . I have Vamp and rouge noir but the nail tech won’t use them on me because of the brush . I have complimentary wine and 3 bottles of party at Holly’s because I knew it was LE OPI . I love your chemistry and he is HILARIOUS!!!!
Everything is double too though, prices of homes in Canada went up 5 x since the early 90's. That is insanity. Paychecks didn't. PS. Thank you for the compliments 😘
Thanks it was so helpful.. ordered Sally Hansen one coz it was the cheapest one and dupe of expensive ones..thanks keep sharing more videos of more trending nailpaints and lip shades ...esp mauve / lilac lipstick
I’ve worn them all. Nowadays I wear CND shellac oxblood but I get tired of it every now and then… my two favourite nail polishes are rouge noir and midnight in Moscow - their shellac lookalikes are oxblood and dark lava respectively
i really like these vids with you guys. and mr tattoo is just so chill and collaborating and the commentary. it's all so great. also very informative, and the polish going on is very satisfying. idk it's just really awesome. i'm not even suuuper big into nailpolish but found myself watching this 32m vid. bravo! :D
Great video (as always). I was surprised how much the red showed through in daylight compared to indoors, I could definitely see differences but I liked them all. I rarely wear dark colours because it's so difficult to do a good job at home.
I need that color!! They didn't have it at my supplier last time I looked. Thank you for the reminder!! I might make another dupes video with polishes suggested by viewers :)
Boy, MSL was just OOC (Out Of Control) today. Love it, but you're correct, Anna, you are always right. ;o) lol. Darn fluffies, we hate them! I loved MSL's 'Five dollars and some pocket lint." LOL Rouge Noir is still my favorite. Vamp and Vixen ordered and will be in the mail soon. :)
Have you tried Gelish Black Cherry Berry? I don’t know how it stacks up with the original Rouge Noir, but I switched to it from Essie Wicked when I switched from UV to LED light, and I love it.
I love this video, such a classy colour! And you guys were in fine form, lots of fun! By coinkidink, I just watched your CND Shellac Dark Red comparison from 2 years ago. Though Shellac can’t be compared to polishes, I wonder if Vinylux would have the colours Fedora and Oxblood. They looked to be quite “dupish” to Rouge Noir to my eye, but I had to go back and forth between videos. Let me know if I’m way off 🤪
This was so fun! I have a shade from Londontown called Lady Luck that is pretty close to these. I think I'll definitely have to pick up Essie Wicked! Thanks for another great video. Love from freezing Maine, USA.
10:57 actually, that color looks pretty good on him. like black but not. i think depending on your look you could totally wear this as a guy. love it with the tatts honestly.
I think who wrote that article didn't fact check. I heard somewhere that it was not Chanels Vamp/Rouge Noir that Uma wore in PF but MAC's Dubonnet. That the only close dupe available to purchase at beauty counters was Chanels Vamp/Rouge Noir.
I had someone else make the same comment. The Uma Thurman and Vamp connection is all over the internet. I guess fake news, nothing new lol You can’t believe what you read 😎
@@TheSalonLife Another note is that Rouge Noir/Vamp looks black, only in high intense lighting can you see the purplish red shimmer of Vamp. Uma's nails are much lighter in the famous resturant and dance scene of Pulp Fiction. There is no mistaking it as black.
Great question, a quick google search on the topic left us without a definitive answer. What we did find was Essie Ballet Slippers and Chanel's Rouge Noir consistently on many bestsellers lists. This is one of those questions that may require a deeper dive. Thanks so much, Nykka - MSL
I dont get it. HOW to hell can you be such a nail polish nerd and never wear any??? 😅i am dying to know the reason🥰love your channel and i hardly ever wear polish,i wear hard gel or acrylic and / or UV gel but i love colors and collecting all that nail stuff🙈i am a victim. Cant help this addiction😅🤦♀️
I think these shades do look very classy, but for some reason when I put something like that on it doesn’t look right on me. Sally Hansen put out some new insta dri colors with a new rounder brush. I hope they improve them all. I also saw Sally Hansen just put out some pink and purple strengtheners and maybe a ridge filler? I was just looking at Revlon Vixen at CVS but I decided to pick up Valentine instead because Valentine’s Day is coming up….
Oh!!!! That’s interesting! The Instadry from SH wore actually quite well in our test just the brush makes me hate it. I have to keep my eye on the new brushes!
MAN they discontinue stuff fast, it's so annoying!!! how are you supposed to find a favorite and then keep using it??? the opi complementary wine is no more. >: (
Dupe actually means to trick or deceive. So if I wear an $8 polish that makes you THINK I’m wearing a $30 polish, it’s a dupe! 😉🌹 However, there’s no benefit in substituting a $30 polish for another $30 polish! Lol
I always thought that dupe comes from word “duplicate”. So same color, different brand. Sometimes people are willing to substitute $30 polish for $30 polish if the first one is no longer available or difficult to find or non existent in their country 😉
@@TheSalonLife Dupe doesn’t “come from” any word. It IS the root word that the other words are made FROM. just the OPPOSITE of what you were thinking, Anna. So even a “duplicate” is a copy that can pass for the original but it is still NOT the same AS the original. For example: if you need a legal paper with a notary stamp or some stamp from a government office, a photo will will NOT due. You MUST get the embossed stamp. A “dupe” (copy or something “almost as good”) won’t do. Like with a passport!Right?) So DUPE is the base from which duplicate is made. And DUPLICITOUS (someone trying to fool you usually in a bad way.) Okay…YES! I understand about running out of Polish and trying to find another brand. But in reality most folks are trying to find a cheaper Polish because we don’t want to spend $30 for Polish! Like I wouldn’t spend $50 for lipstick! I found a MILANI dupe for Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk lipstick! It isn’t exact but it’s too close to tell apart. CT doesn’t stay on for an hour so MILANI is actually a better product! Go figure! 🥴

Madonna also wore it in the Take a Bow video which was like within a month of Pulp Fictions release.

you could not have made this comparison when Vamp came out, because nothing else existed. Vamp was it, that's why it was so special.

They shouldn’t except the ones without base. They can leave some polish behind if people have very porous nails or damaged nails.
I will do a quick removal video
Nice ❤ ♥️ ❤
MAN they discontinue stuff fast, it's so annoying!!! how are you supposed to find a favorite and then keep using it??? the opi complementary wine is no more. >: (
To su krasne farby😍👍
Did you get your VAMP Polish?
Yes, I had a lovely viewer that sent it to us from USA :))
Rouge noir is better than vamp I think but vamp is good
Hello! Do you think Revlon's Heartbreaker is also a dupe??
Hi Daph! It’s not. I have it and it’s beautiful and very glossy but it has a purple undertone.
@@TheSalonLife thank you so much!
😻😻💅💅
Go figure! 🥴
@@robinholbrook6576 😂 Dude, it's not that serious. It's a nail polish comparison video. In the makeup world, everyone uses the word 'dupe' loosely.
