Good morning from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. Yesterday afternoon, when I looked out from our living room, I saw many Pacific Swifts and a large Black Kite made a close fly-by right outside our balcony 👍👍👍👍👍

Those are some awesome targets! Minnesota would be a great place to come look for Pileated Woodpecker, Snowy Owl, and Great Gray Owl during winter. I live in Northern Minnesota and found all three this past winter. Just dress for the frigid temperatures

Thanks! I really think I need to come out to Minnesota! I could knock out so many of my wanted birds! Great tips!

For context I'm from the Buffalo, NY area and haven't traveled out of the Northeast much, at least since I've started birding. I am only leaving Snowy Owl off my list because I can realistically get it in my county during an irruption year.
    1. Painted Bunting
    2. Great Gray Owl
    3. Greater Roadrunner
    4. California Condor
    5. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher

I love your list!! I recently found out that some people raise Montezuma Quail as pets - they call them Mearns Quail, but they are rare. I have chickens but not quail but have been tempted to get some because they truly are sooo beautiful. What an amazing experience it would be to find them in the wild!

I've seen a scissor-tailed flycatcher migrate through here in Alabama. I've never seen a great gray owl, but I'd love to, and I want to pretend to be one for this Halloween.

I just saw my first elegant trogon this year after trying to see it for years. If you haven't already, I highly recommend coming down to south eastern Arizona sometime. Although there are better places to see the trogon more reliably, I reallllly love the Madera Canyon area. You can also find the Rivoli there with extreme regularity.

My top 5 (continental) U.S. birds:
    *5 - crested caracara*
It's a cool raptor that I have a random interest in because I first learned of its existence through this old speculative evolution "documentary" called _The Future is Wild,_ in which caracaras are speculated to evolve into essentially terror birds 5 million years from now and that was one of my favorite animals in the show. The fact that Florida's caracara population is an ice age relict is pretty cool too.
    *4 - greater roadrunner*
I was hoping to see one when I visited Arizona a couple years ago (working on a video about that, actually) but apparently the region I was in is just outside of their normal range.
    *3 - great horned owl*
This one is a placeholder for pretty much all owls (particularly snowy, barred, and barn). I chose this one in particular because while it's not rare in my area, seeing one of the local ones seems to be a very sporadic occurrence for anybody who goes looking for them and the timing is never right when I do bother to go to the areas of the city they've been reported.
    *2 - cackling goose*
Technically one I've _probably_ seen already this past winter at my favorite local birding area, but it was a very brief look under suboptimal conditions and I wasn't able to confirm it despite going back multiple times, so it's kinda like a ghost to me.
    *1 - sandhill crane*
They're a rarity in my region but there's a specific 2-3 week interval in mid-late November when they can be seen migrating through, and I've missed them two years in row now even though they've historically been spotted stopping over at sites in or near my neighborhood. (One even stayed all the way through early January a few towns over.) That aside, they're also just big and have cool sounds.

    • @brighteyedbirding
      @brighteyedbirding  Місяць тому

Awesome list, and even better reasoning! My favorite bird is the Greater Roadrunner so I hope you can see one soon. Just note, if you are looking for a Greater Roadrunner you will rarely ever find one, but when you're not looking for it, it will pop up for you haha.
