Stevens is the ideal captain, especially for the type of team like the Devils were throughout the 90's and early 00's. Not only did all of his opponents fear him, but he was able to make all of the his teammates play in fear of disappointing him. Many of his teammates have stated that his locker room speeches were some of the most emotional they have heard throughout his career. This man played with such passion and intensity, it was truly an honor to watch him play during my childhood.

I've been to all 4 Devils number retirements and this one was the best, by far. Probably cause it was the 1st one.
And loudest , probably because half the crowd wasnt recording it from their phones in 2006.
    4EVER number 4!

Scott Stevens is the best defenceman to ever play the game. Orr and Lidstrom may be better offensively, but there will never be a defenceman who was better well rounded than Scott Stevens. #4 forever.

+Grigori Rasputin Yeh so you saw Shore and Harvey play. You must be like 80 or 90 years old. They're legends just like Scott. In this era Stevens is surpassed by very few, and not by a wide margin. He's as good a skater on the blue line as there ever was, that's what made him such a devastating hitter, but he owned his own zone in DC and NJ.

Agree 100%. A true legend. There will never be another player like Scott. I saw him play every game in a Caps uniform. He's as good a skater as anyone that ever played on the blueline IMO. He was so much more than hits. Always in the right place at the right time. Positionally flawless.

I would hate going against Stevens, knowing you WILL get nailed and better watch out when in his own zone
