Paul Kariya should be recognized as one of the most skilled and talented players to ever play in NHL history. Unfortunately, he played in the wrong era and paid an exponential price with multiple concussions and dirty hits to the head. Had he played in today's speed and skill era, he would be right up there with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin without any doubt whatsoever. Paul Kariya was the first player I ever idolized. He is definitely one of the pioneers of the game that helped shape the creativity we see in the game today. He wasn't just creative - his execution and timing of that creativity was incredible. Watching him and Teemu together was unbelievable. "The Dynamic Duo." Unstoppable and so many amazing plays. I get very irritated when I hear hockey "fans" criticize the NHL for it's lack of hitting or fighting today. I would much rather see guys like Paul Kariya have long successful careers and a good life after hockey than see dirty late hits like Scott Stevens was known for back then. Think about Crosby or McDavid having their careers cut short 5+ years...it's not right. There is of course still hitting but I'm glad there were rule changes implamented. Wish Kariya was able to play in this era but his legacy speaks for itself. It was just unfortunately cut short by non-hockey plays. He deserved better. And anyone saying he should keep his head up, his head was up the entire time he was hit.

Nothing wrong with looking where you pass if you actually watch hockey. Yes, you want to be aware of your surroundings, but the blindside hit rule was implemented because it's a dangerous hit where the puck carrier cant really see them coming. It was unfortunate Kariya played in an era where that wasn't a rule yet.
@@memoranda1 It's likely he did. As someone who play's hockey actively and has taken some very very hard hits. One's like the Stevens hit, you see the light in most cases. I play Goalie so it's less often guy's like me get his, but I've had a few bull rushes on net that ended with my head getting bounced off the ice and I've also been knee'd in the head as well as taken shoulders to the head. It's never fun and sometimes it's very very bad.
Off the floor, on the board!!! That moment was one of the more electrifying in NHL history, made even better by Gary Thorne’s legendary goal call. Dude was so good he could rip shots top corner like that literally in his sleep. That man deserved a Stanley Cup.

Stevens was dirty. He blind sided people a lot, and you don’t have to be big, tough, or skilled to do that. There’s a BIG difference between hitting a player who’s prepared and braced and one who’s not. But I guess if you suck and want to play with people who don’t that’s what you have to do.

the hit itself was clean, but it was late. if he had still had the puck then yes, good hit. But as i said, it was clearly late, therefore it is a dirty hit.
Paul Kariya was a great talent. Being an east coast guy we didn't get to see alot of his career, except what espn put up on highlights. Back when espn showed hockey! It sucks that his career was stunted. Too many great players have ended their careers prematurely, and I get the feeling the game has missed some major milestones due to this. Sorry I know people love Paul but it's a legal check by the book. 90% of that hit was shoulder to chest before anyone screams head contact. My sister went to a Hockey East school in the mid-90s and I was fortunate enough to see Kariya play when the Black Bears came to town. Definitely one of the most talented guys I’ve ever seen.

The fact that he doesn't remember anything after the hit is really scary. In another video, same interview but longer, he doesn't remember the hit, getting off the ice, locker room, coming back and scoring, Game 7, and 1-2 days later. That's haunting.
I didn’t know much about this guy because he played before I started watching hockey. But now I’m convinced he was one of the most skilled and talented players ever. I love that goal in game 6 and a great call by the announcer “off the floor, on the board”. It’s too bad they didn’t win game seven. Im glad he’s in the hall. I think he would make a great coach if he wanted to. Im not a Ducks fan but it would be epic if he coached the Ducks and took them from being one of the worst teams to winning a Stanley Cup. The vast majority of his hits were clean in the rules of the time. The hit on kariya was a a rare exception where he should have been penalized and fined. This coming from a hard core devils fan

I'm just one hockey fan, but I've never been persuaded by Stevens's response to questions about his hit on PK. So many give him a pass, though, including in the hockey media.
What do you want to be persuaded of? Who are you to hand out or take a pass from anyone? That's a hit you saw all the time in Hockey back then. You still see big hits occasionally. Hockey is a violent contact sport and it always will be. That's the game everybody knows they are playing. You have to know where guys are at all times. Stevens is right. He could of ended Paul's career right there if he would have hit him full force. Stevens was a beast and a hall of famer.

I don't believe for one second Scott Stevens didn't know what he was doing when he hit Kariya and Lindros. He was trying to hit them in the head, and he's too smart not to know the impact those hits could have on the recipients. He WANTED those hits to hurt those players so that they couldn't play and his team would have the advantage. It's no coincidence that it happened to the team's best player each time.

He had some stellar games vs my Detroit Red Wings. He was a blast to watch. I always wanted him to be a Red Wing. He always seemed to be a class act. I hope as his life goes on he doesn't have any problems due to the concussions he received in his playing days.
This was the golden era for me in hockey. I grew up with this brand of hockey and remember those mighty ducks of the 90s with kariya and selanne at the helm. They were a force to be reckon with, as a fan love the big hits on players and liked enforcers like Stevens. But it was sad to see such a great career cut short due to head injuries.

Paul Kariya and Peter Forsberg were very similar players and consequently, two of the most targeted guys in NHL history. PK got his brains knocked around and was constantly slashed and PF had as many concussions and even lost his spleen in a cup final. How these guys continued to keep playing is a superpower I'll never understand.
Really sad that a player as good as Kariya had his hockey career ended that way. I love watching that kind of talent on the ice with the puck making plays it's hard to believe can be made.

Im a huge, diehard Devils fan and I remember the Stevens hit vividly. I have so much respect for Kariya after him scoring a goal five minutes after I thought he had been killed. He stopped breathing for a moment on the ice.
He had one of the best backhands ever. Maybe the best ever. I remember hearing that he was gifted with great personal discipline. I remember Stevens as someone who hit to hurt. He aimed for players' heads. He would bring his shoulder up from under the players jaw resulting is the worst type of concussion possible because the ends of your jawbone are driven up into your brain. Kariya may still have quite a battle to go through to stay healthy but I know there have been good improvements in treating brain damage caused by concussions.
Stevens was a bully, no doubt... He said it himself, a big hit could intimidate your opponent and fire up your teammates. He used his size and strength to shorten other people's careers and benefit his own. It is what it is.

I remember watching this when it was first uploaded and just stumbled across it again. I started watching hockey at the beginning of the 02-03 season. I had no ties to the sport, just became addicted to a hockey game a friend let me borrow on the original Playstation and started watching as soon as the season started. I was 12 years old, I rooted for the Kings because I lived in LA County my whole life up to that point. That first year of watching, Kings were eliminated from playoff contention, Ziggy Palffy was the reason I fell in love with the sport. I watched the entire Ducks run to the final that year and remember “off the floor, on the board.” Paul Kariya cemented my love for the sport and I never looked back. Kariya is one of my all-time favorite players, wish I could have seen the years before that. Despite being a Kings fan, I’ll always be grateful for Kariya helping me get into the sport. I want to show some love for Teemu as well, so much fun to watch over the years. I htes watching the Ducks win the cup in 2007, but I’m glad Selanne was able to get his cup.
I'm a big hockey fan. Kariya was an amazing player to watch. His talent and skill set matched any of the elites. The hit and motionless Kariya were difficult to watch. So sad careers get shorten because of dirty hits. No doubt CTE is part of his life now. Hopefully the damage is limited and Kariya will live a normal life.
Just picture this: Most people who have a concussion their vision becomes blurry. You don’t remember any of that. He probably feels like he needs to throw up. Yet he scores a goal. UNBELIEVEABLE.
Yes. Ive been concussed a couple times, your vision is impaired, and the nausea developes over the next couple days, you feel like you have a server case of the flu. But i also remember those instances where i was knocked out, remember before and after, never had lost my memory.
He was my favorite player, he still is and I think it's too sad how he's carreer ended, that he didn't win the Stanly Cup and he's 11 points away from 1000. He should have been on the top 100 list released by the NHL this year.
Stevens was a great player but when you end the careers of guys like Kariya and Lindros then all you're doing is ruining their lives and hurting the game. Imagine what they could have done for the game if they continued to play and dominate.
Eric Crozier kariya ended his own career. First he cuts to the middle with Scott Stevens on the ice, and on top of that he completely admired his own pass. Jeez it’s like he wants to get flattened. He should’ve learned how to protect himself like other small players do (Kane, geaudreu, Gallagher)
I grew up loving the Mighty Ducks movies so naturally Paul being on the Ducks got me into watching nhl and I haven’t stopped for over 20 years love the sport.

As a disabled Vet, I miss that job every day, and would do it again in a heart beat!! My injury took another passion from my life, hockey, and bothers me every single day. Btw, players like Paul Kariya AND Scott Stevens help make the game what it is...if there was only one type of player or one way to play the game it wouldn't be nearly as exciting, it's the combination of the two skillsets that make it the best team sport on the planet.

Always admired Kariya. I love the beautiful hockey Anaheim played when they had him and Selanne. But somewhere along the lines, Anaheim became more of a bully team (probably when they got Pronger). Now, the Ducks seem to be in between Skill and Brute Force.
How is it hard to justify? Even Kariya said it was legit 20 years ago. He seems to have changed his tune to go with the times, but that isn’t much of an honest opinion then. Here is the thing I don’t get about people commenting about this hit: it was either an illegal hit by infracting the style of play or it was late, right? In terms of style of play the hit was completely legal. There was no elbow, Stevens didn’t leave the ice, etc. So that isn’t an issue. That leaves it being a late hit. I could see this maybe, but you’re cutting a VERY fine line. Stevens hit Kariya 1-2.5 seconds after releasing the puck. I’ve been meaning to time this for years and the UA-cam timer isn’t accurate enough to say for sure. If it is a second or so then there really isn’t an argument. Now at 2 or 2.5 seconds you have a point, but even there it becomes subjective at best. So could it have been a late hit? Okay, maybe. But it is much more likely somewhere between a case of a totally clean hit or maybe pushing the limits between legit and late. But people make Stevens out to be like Tie Domi! That’s just craziness talking. Stevens was a very big, very strong, exceptionally well built guy, and he knew how to use his weight to devastating effect. That doesn’t make him dirty, that makes him good. It would be like people complaining that Chara is dirty because he can outreach everyone else. Well he can because he it built that way. If what Stevens was doing was merely dirty playing then other would have copied the style to the same effect. There are some great hitters, but no one has equaled Stevens because they can’t. That speaks to his build and ability.... you can’t copy that.
The fact he almost played 1000 games with all the concussions is both impressive and scary. Who knows what kind of irreversible damage he has but he will always be a legend. Tough price to pay and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy
With some love from Nashville: Kariya was by far one the most (if not THE most) dynamically skilled players the Preds ever had in their early years. That team ten years ago was loaded...Kariya, Arnott, Sullivan, Dumont, Hartnell, Radulov, P. Forsberg, Legwand, Erat, Timonen, Weber, Suter, Klein, Hamhuis, Zidlicky...and Vokoun in net. Haven't seen that much skill until recent years, and Kariya helped grow this market considerably. Of course, the firesale scare and recession hit soon after...and we had to ship off some players Im sure each of us would've loved to retain for all those years. He's a part of our story...and a favorite among those of us who grew up wanting to be #9 in a nontraditional hockey market. Now we've got yet another #9 doing much of the same and with 150,000 on Broadway. But thank you, Paul, for all of those memories!
Brandon Faun yes sir. Just couldn't hang with the West coast teams and the physical style they play. Lots of role players along with the few skill guys we had. Spent a lot of time at Centennial Sportsplex watching them practice. I've got sticks from Weber, Zidlicky, Adam Hall, Arnott, Smithson, possibly a Kariya Easton shaft, and Mark Eaton. Good times. I was the skate of the union a few years ago and a guy picked up Kariyas helmet he used in Colorado for $20. I about fell over. Lol

I will never understand how that was not a suspension. If it would have been Domi on Kariya it would have been a 50 game suspension and a $60 million dollar fine. Domi probably would have spent 10 years in prison.

Because everything about and around the Stevens hit was more dramatic: the long time Paul was flat on the ice without moving, the moment his visor fogged up and everyone watching let out a sigh of relief, him coming back on the ice to play... and that goal. The goal makes it all the more memorable.
I mean... those are exactly the reasons why it gets more attention. Nowhere in his reply did he say it was "right", that Suter's crosscheck doesn't get talked about.
Possibly one of the toughest hockey players of all time. He didn’t get destroyed often because of how good his balance and core strength was but when he did get lit up, he’d be right back out on the ice. Legend.

Sorry I know people love Paul but it's a legal check by the book. 90% of that hit was shoulder to chest before anyone screams head contact. I'm just one hockey fan, but I've never been persuaded by Stevens's response to questions about his hit on PK. So many give him a pass, though, including in the hockey media.
What do you want to be persuaded of? Who are you to hand out or take a pass from anyone? That's a hit you saw all the time in Hockey back then. You still see big hits occasionally. Hockey is a violent contact sport and it always will be. That's the game everybody knows they are playing. You have to know where guys are at all times. Stevens is right. He could of ended Paul's career right there if he would have hit him full force. Stevens was a beast and a hall of famer.

I don't believe for one second Scott Stevens didn't know what he was doing when he hit Kariya and Lindros. He was trying to hit them in the head, and he's too smart not to know the impact those hits could have on the recipients.
He WANTED those hits to hurt those players so that they couldn't play and his team would have the advantage. It's no coincidence that it happened to the team's best player each time.

He had some stellar games vs my Detroit Red Wings. He was a blast to watch. I always wanted him to be a Red Wing. He always seemed to be a class act. I hope as his life goes on he doesn't have any problems due to the concussions he received in his playing days.

This was the golden era for me in hockey. I grew up with this brand of hockey and remember those mighty ducks of the 90s with kariya and selanne at the helm. They were a force to be reckon with, as a fan love the big hits on players and liked enforcers like Stevens. But it was sad to see such a great career cut short due to head injuries.
SS was a head hunter, so glad that era of play is gone, too bad that some players careers ended because of it.

Paul Kariya and Peter Forsberg were very similar players and consequently, two of the most targeted guys in NHL history.
PK got his brains knocked around and was constantly slashed and PF had as many concussions and even lost his spleen in a cup final.
How these guys continued to keep playing is a superpower I'll never understand.
Really sad that a player as good as Kariya had his hockey career ended that way. I love watching that kind of talent on the ice with the puck making plays it's hard to believe can be made.

Im a huge, diehard Devils fan and I remember the Stevens hit vividly. I have so much respect for Kariya after him scoring a goal five minutes after I thought he had been killed. He stopped breathing for a moment on the ice.
He had one of the best backhands ever. Maybe the best ever. I remember hearing that he was gifted with great personal discipline.
I remember Stevens as someone who hit to hurt. He aimed for players' heads. He would bring his shoulder up from under the players jaw resulting is the worst type of concussion possible because the ends of your jawbone are driven up into your brain.
Kariya may still have quite a battle to go through to stay healthy but I know there have been good improvements in treating brain damage caused by concussions.
Stevens was a bully, no doubt... He said it himself, a big hit could intimidate your opponent and fire up your teammates. He used his size and strength to shorten other people's careers and benefit his own. It is what it is.

I remember watching this when it was first uploaded and just stumbled across it again. I started watching hockey at the beginning of the 02-03 season. I had no ties to the sport, just became addicted to a hockey game a friend let me borrow on the original Playstation and started watching as soon as the season started. I was 12 years old, I rooted for the Kings because I lived in LA County my whole life up to that point. That first year of watching, Kings were eliminated from playoff contention, Ziggy Palffy was the reason I fell in love with the sport. I watched the entire Ducks run to the final that year and remember “off the floor, on the board.” Paul Kariya cemented my love for the sport and I never looked back. Kariya is one of my all-time favorite players, wish I could have seen the years before that. Despite being a Kings fan, I’ll always be grateful for Kariya helping me get into the sport. I want to show some love for Teemu as well, so much fun to watch over the years. I htes watching the Ducks win the cup in 2007, but I’m glad Selanne was able to get his cup.
I'm a big hockey fan. Kariya was an amazing player to watch. His talent and skill set matched any of the elites. The hit and motionless Kariya were difficult to watch. So sad careers get shorten because of dirty hits. No doubt CTE is part of his life now. Hopefully the damage is limited and Kariya will live a normal life.

He was my favorite player, he still is and I think it's too sad how he's carreer ended, that he didn't win the Stanly Cup and he's 11 points away from 1000. He should have been on the top 100 list released by the NHL this year.

Stevens was a great player but when you end the careers of guys like Kariya and Lindros then all you're doing is ruining their lives and hurting the game. Imagine what they could have done for the game if they continued to play and dominate.
Eric Crozier kariya ended his own career. First he cuts to the middle with Scott Stevens on the ice, and on top of that he completely admired his own pass. Jeez it’s like he wants to get flattened. He should’ve learned how to protect himself like other small players do (Kane, geaudreu, Gallagher)

He wanted the cup, he did anything he could I guess. Still, I don't approve.
How is it hard to justify? Even Kariya said it was legit 20 years ago. He seems to have changed his tune to go with the times, but that isn’t much of an honest opinion then.
Here is the thing I don’t get about people commenting about this hit: it was either an illegal hit by infracting the style of play or it was late, right? In terms of style of play the hit was completely legal. There was no elbow, Stevens didn’t leave the ice, etc. So that isn’t an issue. That leaves it being a late hit. I could see this maybe, but you’re cutting a VERY fine line. Stevens hit Kariya 1-2.5 seconds after releasing the puck. I’ve been meaning to time this for years and the UA-cam timer isn’t accurate enough to say for sure. If it is a second or so then there really isn’t an argument. Now at 2 or 2.5 seconds you have a point, but even there it becomes subjective at best.
So could it have been a late hit? Okay, maybe. But it is much more likely somewhere between a case of a totally clean hit or maybe pushing the limits between legit and late. But people make Stevens out to be like Tie Domi! That’s just craziness talking. Stevens was a very big, very strong, exceptionally well built guy, and he knew how to use his weight to devastating effect. That doesn’t make him dirty, that makes him good. It would be like people complaining that Chara is dirty because he can outreach everyone else. Well he can because he it built that way. If what Stevens was doing was merely dirty playing then other would have copied the style to the same effect. There are some great hitters, but no one has equaled Stevens because they can’t. That speaks to his build and ability.... you can’t copy that.
The fact he almost played 1000 games with all the concussions is both impressive and scary. Who knows what kind of irreversible damage he has but he will always be a legend. Tough price to pay and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy

Kariya was by far one the most (if not THE most) dynamically skilled players the Preds ever had in their early years. That team ten years ago was loaded...Kariya, Arnott, Sullivan, Dumont, Hartnell, Radulov, P. Forsberg, Legwand, Erat, Timonen, Weber, Suter, Klein, Hamhuis, Zidlicky...and Vokoun in net. Haven't seen that much skill until recent years, and Kariya helped grow this market considerably. Of course, the firesale scare and recession hit soon after...and we had to ship off some players Im sure each of us would've loved to retain for all those years. He's a part of our story...and a favorite among those of us who grew up wanting to be #9 in a nontraditional hockey market.
Now we've got yet another #9 doing much of the same and with 150,000 on Broadway. But thank you, Paul, for all of those memories!
Brandon Faun yes sir. Just couldn't hang with the West coast teams and the physical style they play. Lots of role players along with the few skill guys we had. Spent a lot of time at Centennial Sportsplex watching them practice. I've got sticks from Weber, Zidlicky, Adam Hall, Arnott, Smithson, possibly a Kariya Easton shaft, and Mark Eaton. Good times. I was the skate of the union a few years ago and a guy picked up Kariyas helmet he used in Colorado for $20. I about fell over. Lol
The only good thing Rot Stevens did for the league was to improve rules that won't allow players to end careers of others like he did.

I will never understand how that was not a suspension. If it would have been Domi on Kariya it would have been a 50 game suspension and a $60 million dollar fine. Domi probably would have spent 10 years in prison.

Because everything about and around the Stevens hit was more dramatic: the long time Paul was flat on the ice without moving, the moment his visor fogged up and everyone watching let out a sigh of relief, him coming back on the ice to play... and that goal. The goal makes it all the more memorable.
