      It’s built better than the junky OE filters from Honda and Toyota that people are running 10k miles. An OE Honda or Toyota filter went from being the best quality filter that you could put on your vehicle to absolute overpriced garbage.

      @@josephstarnes8747 I worked for Toyota for a long time beginning in the mid eighties and their maintenance parts like filters were so much better than anything else made by anybody but beginning in the mid nineties they decided that they were going to have to compete with the Iffy Lubes and the way to do it was cut out quality parts and replace them with junk equivalent to what the fast lubes were selling. They even forced technicians to do oil changes for free to compete with the Iffy Lubes. That’s when the great exodus of Toyota and Honda dealer technicians began. Most of the good ones like me went to independent shops or started their own shops.

    I am impressed by that economy filter. I see many filters that show very little or no sludge/ carbon on the media. Possibly due to frequency of oil changes, but this filter was working and doing its intended job. I’m not a fan of the bypass valve, and I agree with many others that more frequent oil changes are a good idea.

    I liked everything about that filter except for the bypass valve. I don't like how they stick it in the leaf spring. But it is well made and looks like it did its job as intended. The nitrile adbv is not a deal breaker though I do prefer silicone. The bypass valve is just cheap and has potential to not sealing well. I would suggest a shorter maintenance interval though.

    I'll start by saying, Ken may or may not know the shorty 6607 is not the Honda spec size filter, the ~.75" longer 7317 is. That said, many quick lube places and lower tier filter listings consolidate to the shorty used here. Also, the 3.5L Honda Pilot/Ridgeline filter is in a terrible location. Right above a control arm/cross member. So tight, can't even use a fitted cap wrench. "Maybe" because 6607 shorter, cap wrench might work, idk. While 9k miles seems like a lot, being done in 4 months I'm going to speculate much of that highway 'type' driving at engine operating temps which would be easiest on oil. Ken also likely paid some attention to the dash MM OLM read out which shows oil % life left. I might shorten the oci a bit, but that's for Ken to consider. As you can see, these ST ecores are no media area leaders, skimpy. The wide nylon core makes for a deceptive look. I would likely use a better higher tier filter. Seems WM has discontinued the Super Tech MP series ecore with silicone adbv. Kirkland , ST Syn, Amazon Basics, all the same. Good oil. Long comment, but I have some knowledge about the 3.5L Honda engine. Thanks for the video.

      @@Sw-so4zj Yes as noted technically the 7317/14610/57356 is the spec size. Having followed, owned and maintained Hondas since 1996. I'm not aware of any Honda vehicle that specs the topic shorty. In~2001 majority Hondas switched to 7317 from the wider but shorter 9688. All that said, many quick lubes and low tier filter look ups (like white ST) do consolidate the 7317 to the 6607. The current Honda OEM A02 is 7317 size.

    @softwaresignals Місяць тому +4

    They put on the wrong sized oil filter for that 2020 Honda Pilot. Should be the ST7317, a bigger oil filter, and the correct one for that application.
    The 6607 used here is a "shorty" version of the 7317 (Fram's part number system, so a TG7317 or XG7317 is the right one). A shorter, smaller one like that resulted in more bypass events on cold starts, high rev transients, you know. A;lso, the higher mass flux on the smaller one is worse filtering performance.

      At some point in the past few months, Walmart switched from showing the ST7313/MP7313 as the correct filter for these engines to instead showing the ST6607/MP6607. I'm not sure on why that is exactly, especially since they ALSO recommend the Mobil 1 M1-110A, for which the MP7313 is the direct replacement, but the 6607 replace the M1-108A. Very strange! I imagine that this person is just using the data that Walmart gave them - but I don't even know why Walmart is doing that. I continue to use the MP7313 on my three Hondas but Walmart states that the MP6607 is the correct filter.

    Yeah, that oil was too dark. Why chance it? Although because of the winter months, I have stretched out changes even a little further, but I use the 20,000 mile Mobile One to hedge my bet.
    Every time that I buy an oil filter for my 2011 Civic [218,000 miles] I have angst over getting a lousy one and saving money, or a better one and waste money.
    Two days ago I bought a cheap filter opener, and yesterday I cut a Supertech MP-7317 which cross-references to the original Honda Filter, but is listed on Walmart's site as not fitting. Even on the filter itself it states it's the same as 3 other filters that fit the Honda.
    The filter is $5.97 and just an inch longer. It was built exactly the same [metal end caps] with 100 square inches of filter media.
    If you have the room to fit a longer filter, I feel that this would be worth the extra $2 or $80 over 10 years.

    • @deezullram726
      @deezullram726 Місяць тому +2

      I respectfully disagree when it comes to the modern GDI engines. They are notorious for diluting the oil with fuel. My '22 Subaru, that I've owned since new is a prime example. Factory recommended oil change is 6,000mi. I do oil analysis every oil change and at 3000 mi, my oil contains 4% fuel! No way I would go 6000mi or more. I change at 3000mi. Oil is cheap in the grand scheme of things. I could see doing longer OCIs with a port injected engine as they are not known for diluting the oil with fuel like the modern GDI engines. Some manufacturers are worse than others. Oil analysis will tell you how far is safe to stretch the OCIs. To each his own though. Not my vehicle...😎

      What is best for an engine doesn't depend on what the EPA wants. Yet motors call for 5w20 instead of 5w30. Crackpots don't want people to change the oil so much because they think it is bad for the environment. They also don't want people driving or running old cars. The manufacturers just want those people off their back. Common sense says cleaner, newer oil wears the engine less, period.

    • @user-tb7rn1il3q

      One drop of fuel will make the oil smell. Fuel dilution is totally overblown. Even port injection will cause a little fuel dilution. An oil filter shouldn’t get dirty at all if the air filter is working properly and the engine is clean inside.

    That filter has been maxed out for quite a while. It's putting dirt back into the engine. Cheap filter like this one should barely go 3k. Only filtering 30 microns, it's letting the 20-30 micron particles past, that would normally be caught by a better filter. Between the lower quality filter and going too far in the service interval, this engine is wearing out fast and is filthy inside. When I change my oil in my 2022 Honda Civic at 3k with a full synthetic filter, My oil comes out still looking gold which means it's trapping all of the dirt. There's no dirt going back into my engine after it hits the filter. Unlike this filter, which is throwing dirt back at the engine because It's been full for a while. The oil might go longer than three or 4,000 mi, but the filters can't hold any more dirt.

I will continue to use the MP7313 - walmart says 6607 now but also recommends the Mobil 1 M110A, which is the 7313 equivalent. You should tell Ken to grab a VCM Tuner - VERY easy install! - and different filters for his Pilot!

    on 5/4/2024 I have a vid where I open up a used ppg4612 precision Parts branded. its supposed to be equivalent to the st6607 and fram 6607. OEM part is 15400-PLM-A02 (Honda). oddly enough the ppg4612 is what the dealer used for my oil change and *NOT* the OEM part. When I opened it up it looked good, just wish I knew the micron ratting for it. I haven't been able to find it. I am assuming its just like the pg4612 (premium guard 5k filter , 96% eff at 20 microns). I would of expected the dealer to use OEM filter or at least a filter that would cover the oil change duration of apx 7k miles.

      Are you saying a "Honda dealer" didn't use a Honda OEM oil filter? Or, some other vehicle dealer? If the former, not much of a Honda dealer, and I'd be pissed. Not because the A02 is such a great filter, it's not. Efficiency not very good. But a Honda dealer should use Honda OEM parts. And to top is off, they didn't even use the longer spec 7317 size. No bueno☹

    I just don't like ANY filter that has a metal to metal contact between the base plate and the bypass valve/spring. It just invites leakage of dirty oil. And I don't have a lot of confidence in the seal of that plastic valve. And that leaf spring doesn't inspire a lot confidence.

      In the cases that either 1) the filter media becomes clogged due to excessive use and oil flow into the engine is impeded or 2) the temperature is so low that the very cold thick oil can't pass through the filter media quickly enough so that the engine is starved for oil, the bypass valve opens to allow unfiltered oil to reach the engine.
