- We put a lot of trust in cloud storage providers, presuming that they’ll keep our data safe. But what if they're hacked? Or their servers go down? Or what if they decide to just kick us out of our accounts, and we lose all our emails, files, contacts, photos...
There's another big problem with centralizing all our storage on a single platform: it turns out the whole world is doing it. Most of the world's data is stored by just 3 companies: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.
In this video we’re going to talk about how a handful of companies came to control most of the world’s data, how this could put our data in danger and make censorship easier, and we’ll explore the new world of decentralized storage, allowing control of the internet to be distributed back to individuals.

I heard of a story where a dad lost his google account due to photos that were flagged as child porn. The photos were taken at the request of a doctor for a telehealth visit. Even after proving this google did not give his account back. He lost all his photos. Im excited for proton to release their photo app.

Self host with something like photoprism or nextcloud and keep backups, you can even use cost effective cloud services as a backup if you really want to like S3 Glacier or Backblaze. Also keep the original files on your phone, if you need more storage add an SD card if you can. If you can't expand the storage, prioritize storage or expandable storage when you're ready to replace your phone.
Although you are right about why & what happened, he had google's internet/wifi as well- they permanently blacklisted him from using their service; revoked SIM/network access through his phone, , completely deleted both his personal google acct & the one he used to run his business & stole all the $ that was in his business's google wallet. Both local & state police verified after an 8 month investigation that he didn't do anything wrong. Google never apologized & he still isn't allowed to use any of their services. @heinzkitzvelvet Also it wasn't reddit- It was national news covered by Louis Rossman, Steve Lehto , The New York Post, Washington Post, ABC news, Bloomberg news, & CNN, & those are just the ones I know about.

This is such a big, important subject. It's great that you're raising the issues that people just don't think about due to their unfortunate faith in the competence of large corporations. Losing all your email and business documents due to a glitch at Google would not be good and it has already happened to some people. That's a painful lesson.
I am not worried about the "competence" of BigTech. I am worried about their criminality, their obvious bias and their desire for the tyranny that empowers them further.

When you look at your windows 10/12 folders ,this is what you would find :

They already or put you on their cloud and all your data is licking ,synchronized with their cloud .
This is why I always teach others to use the 3-2-1(3) storage. 3 copies 2 different local medias and 1 offsite copy (which is then copied to 3 different cloud storage)

First of all, it's super helpful when people start to have a single backup, where they have multiple, ideally automatically managed recovery points. 3/2/1 is too much for most, they are inclined to not do any backup when they are overwhelmed. Then it's better they have 1/1/0, and that's it.
@user-xk6jw3wi5u what you're saying is much better for most people. I have data on my main drive, backup on another drive (in same computer) and finally on cloud (encrypted for cloud storage using something easy like cryptomator.) No need for anything more IMO for most people.
Plus, it side steps the weirdness of giving an external hard drive for somebody else like a family member to store on your behalf. "What's on this drive?" "Wait, why do you want ME to hold onto it for you?"

The thing is, current decentralized storage solutions achieves decentralization through distribution (network of private computers offering up their own storage space for incentives). So it simply introduces a paradox, because you are just storing your data everywhere, than to keep it from centralized data center operators. What should be done is, people should be hosting a personal file storage themselves. DIY at home. Private, and you totally own it.

Yes, but then you run into the same risks of using floppy disks from before (unless you have great redundancy, which is very pricey). On top of that, events like natural disasters and house fires make losing your data very possible

I keep everything on my own servers, I don't use third-party cloud storage
My first step towards keeping my own data my own is that I have ditched Microsoft Windows completely. I am now using Linux extensively in our home, and my next migration will be to centralize our data. We live in an age where we need to go back to the basics: keeping the personal computer personal.
you mean decentralize ! you mean personal storage. right? centralized means, in the big cloud on THIER servers, under THEIR power.

Exactly why I'm building my own data center, that way even if I do lose my "cloud storage" I still have a locale back up in my self hosted cloud.
Plus I'll also make it so that there isn't just one device that has a copy but several devices.
Be it a server, a USB hard drive and / or a memory stick.
Two is one

I store my important documents on two different computers, a flash drive, and two email accounts, none of which are gmail. I lost an important file once and had to retype all 300+ pages. I don’t really like cloud storage for keeping my important professional documents. When they are on my devices, I feel I can get to them at anytime. Plus there is no way anyone can delete it.

You can set up your own cloud storage with a NAS at home. But the problem is: nobody to pay fees to.

Web 1.0 was the golden age of the internet, hands down. The sound of that dial up modem was similar to an aeroplane taking you away to far away places of freedom. These days you can travel, but you are always being chaperoned around.
@@fairplayer7435 We used to use an old acoustically coupled modem to connect to a PDP 11 at the university. It was in our high school computer lab. A couple of the electronics geeks soldered it together. It was all of 75 baud. It actually modulated and demodulated (mo - dem). The local phone network was still fully analogue. Its hand made cradle held the handset. Old bakelite black plastic. We had a daisy wheel printer. Local side it sounded like a machine gun. Remote side it was very very slowwwwww. No monitor. We had a lotta fun.

i just locked out of my other google account, if you didnt link your google account on one of your phone, tablet, pc, laptop, you will never get in.
A hammer in search of a nail. I still possess stacks of disks stored away with data from my first computers and programs many decades ago. There was little to no problem with storing personal data. I'm afraid that the whole purpose for the internet has been for deleterious power and control all along.
I use a NAS drive that syncs with cloud, that way I have my own local copy.
On my home server I run a back up of my brothers files and he does the same for me. It mightn be the ideal 3,2,1 situation but it does work
Don't store anything with google, cloud storage is not your best method. Store your data on your own drives at home and backup everything new at least twice a week, external drives are so cheap now you can buy massive amounts of storage for a hundred bucks. I have stuff stored at home on drives and you don't need a NAS or complicated stuff, just an external drive and a backup so you have 3 separate methods of storage ( 2 x backup at home and on your device). You're not accessing this data every day, they're just backups!!

What would stop someone....to develop a protocol... decentralized, everyone can host a box. Somewhat like raid,you will need 2gb to store 1gb. One gigabite to your own files,the other for pariry of the network files. Im exchange your files are part of this partity on other people's boxes. If your box goes offline,after a certain amount of time the parity vanishes
I use backblaze and google as a backup solution (Backblaze as archived backup google drive or live sync for files from my phone tablet e.c.t) for my Synology nas which is also backed up locally. Synology can sync with outlook and google drive and perfectly sync no chance of losing any of your precious data if google or microsoft decided to mess things up

:) WELL DONE indeed! THANKS MUCH for sharing as I was stoutly AGAINST the Cloud in Y2K mess, and did not trust the low cost provider schemes, let alone lack of security or encryption at the time. My BIGGEST concerns, were with WHERE IS IT? 3rd world Data Centers OR in China! NO THANK YOU, but LOST to the Bean Counters and was laid off shortly after the fiasco :( Home Nas or storage and backups for now, until we get more choices. ALL the BEST and Cheers! :)

Need to hear downsides of decentralized status quo. For Sia I read a setup page a year ago with a doctorate level explanation on how Sia has gotten worse over time. All providers remunerate in crypto first,then fiat; all corporations with decentralized offerings still hold some degree of control over the nodes. And from me personally, the consumer prices seem higher than for standard storage.
A combo, self stored + any remote storage, works better. Hopefully a well rounded solution will appear.

I'm a computer guy, and I've disagreed with the cloud since I've recently started hearing about it so much. A little easy observation tells you, your stuff is "over there" on some undisclosed server, you can't just go drive and get. Drive space is cheap folks. Store it at home, copied at a friend's house on non connected disk space for example. Tremendous amounts of data can make it to tiny encrypted drives. Travels easy. I've found streaming also overrated. Again drive space is cheap and portable.

Would love to hear your evaluation of self hosted distributed options like a Synology, QNAP, etc…system setup. I guess it’s potentially a more expensive and more complicated setup. Would be curious about your security & privacy evaluation of the manufacturers apps? Steps to best config? Or open source replacements?
I’m all about community and would like to rely on family and friends to host small synology boxes across the country and even globally to back up important documents. Each location has their own local segmented private folder as well.
Schedule times for these backups to take place so the device can be disconnected and powered off (potentially in a faraday cage) for the data to be in a protected state at rest during the time that others are syncing to source.
In theory, short of entire global destruction, this data should persist just about any scenario (I think). Well…. Maybe not a nefarious state sponsored or black hat attack 😅😂
I have two cloud services...my pc and external copy... just don't often back-up the external devices which is often found in the tool shed or some bin in there... (don´t ask) when i see it every now and then, i backup and return it) Used to keep a copy at work as well...but don´t have a office any more (all encrypted of course)

Those services look great to persist public info in a censorship resistant way. But for private data it seems you are better off investing on your own hardware and paying for end to end encrypted backup on one or more clouds, for disaster recovery. It would be great to have something that stores most f the suff locally, yet its UX feels like a regular retail cloud service like from Google or Apple.
Maybe a video focusing on those different use cases would be good.

This actually happened to me and not only are you barred from any of your Google accounts but it also breaks your android phone because guess what it's linked to Google

Not sure how to suggest topics for you. Would you be interested in doing a video on privacy focused alternatives to Discord (preferably one that you can self host... on your own hardware). I've only started looking into alternatives like Teamspeak, Mumble, Element, Revolt, Guilded, ect.. They all seem to have drawbacks and im not sure which one would be the one to go with to get 'discord like' features, but privately (ie the dev doesnt collect/sell your data).

Private, virtualization cloud storage, is how I row. I run my network-attached storage and use it every day. It's my private server and is only controlled by me. Anytime I take a photo, record a video, download a video and pictures, or take a screenshot it will automatically back up on a wifi connection. It's been 95% reliable, as long as I maintain my server maintenance. No one owns my data but me.
Decentralizing the storage is a good 1st step. The next step to overcome is the centralized access. The SCPrime project offers both distributed storage and decentralized access by running a local appliance. Your data is encrypted and sharded by the appliance which then distributes the sharded & encrypted data directly to individuals acting as storage providers (no corporate servers in the middle). Redundant shards are sent out to protect against storage providers being offline. I would be interested to know if there is a better solution and why.

Cryptomator and G Drive work for me
I had that problem when I lost my password due to a computer failure.I was not able login to my email because I forgot the password and for some reason I had the recovery email set to the email I was trying to recover. I also has a NAS but it seems to only allow backups from the cloud.
Google has the habit of randomly blocking your email account "for your safety".
yahoo does that too.

I get the decentralised part. What I don't get about Storj, filecoin etc is the whole crypto currency link. It's all a bit murky.

I don't know, part of me kind of fantasizes about losing all my past data. In a certain way it would be freeing. I used to have an obsession with making sure all my data was organized, accessible, backed up, etc., and I still know people who have their own local storage solutions rather than storing everything in the cloud. And while sure, it's a bit unnerving to think that a data center catastrophe, or a random hack/impersonation/etc. could discard everything you've gathered over even decades, in a way, it's just an example of impermanence. How much of the "data" that our ancestors just 100 or 200 years ago is available somewhere? Obviously they didn't have as much, generally speaking, but that might be a point in itself. Why do we need to hold on to every email, every piece of digital minutiae from 20 or more years ago? It's certainly convenient to be able to access stuff to find out some pertinent piece of information that you've forgotten, but in some way I keep thinking about the fact that humans (at least 99+% of us) forget 80% of what we once knew or had access to, and the other 20% is incredibly diminished (save for a small number of important events and facts) and certainly distorted to various degrees.
I know no one is looking here for a philosophical treatise on impermanence and the value of forgetting, but I just have those thoughts pop up whenever I start thinking about this stuff. Heck, all of our storage could be wiped regardless of where we store it if there's a bad enough EMP or other natural disaster that takes most of the Internet and power grid offline. We'll then have much bigger fish to fry of course, but still, it's worth considering this and maybe letting go of the fact that you will ever ultimately control all your data perfectly. Sure, you can mitigate some risk, but in the end, it's a bit of a crapshoot...

I was going to purchase one until I found out that the only way you could enter settings for the device and set it up for your home network, is to have an account on the sellers website. Then you would have to log into your account on the companies website to change settings. So, how useful is the device going to be should the company go out of business.
Why anyone would purchase any tool, or device that requires an internet connection and login to seller website in order for it to work is beyond my ability to comprehend. There is simply no logic behind it. And when the company fails, the device becomes a paper weight.
Is there a website to buy a safe phone to purchase that's programed already?
It's not just "storage". I run a mile from things like accounting applications which are web-based. Your key data is on someone else's machines, and if you lose Internet connectivity, you're stuffed. In fact all web-based things have these fatal weaknesses. If I have electricity ( dubious in a crazed green world) and some cheap machines I can back it up. Protect against catastrophes? Years ago I had 12platter disk packs taken off site daily. Easier now with flash drives etc.
Then there's those devices that you purchase and don't seem to work if you don't have internet access.
Years ago I seen a video on a metal 3D printer in which the device required a connection to the manufacturer's website.
The manufacturer used that connection to insure that the owner of the device, could not 3D print a gun.
There are many that would think that's a good thing, but here's the problem. The only way the manufacturer can determine whether or not you are printing a gun, is for them to know EVERYTHING you are printing which means you lose the ability to patent any new technology you develop, because someone has access to your print files, they can patent your new invention before you have the chance too.

I had tinkered with making my own, combining Tahoe-LAFS, VirtualBox, "shared folders," and locally mapped drives. It... worked, but Tahoe's distribution scheme was dreadfully slow. As time went on, the world went to Python 3 while Tahoe stayed on 2.7, making it harder to maintain, so I dropped it.
The biggest threat is ransomware which has to be dealt with now.
I stopped my icloud account when I was blocked from downloading photos which I took with my own cameraphone, at my own house, during my own time, featuring my own family. Because they now only existed on the cloud and had been hijacked off my phone.

I can’t recall many things in which my life has become better thanks to the internet and what it offers in terms of services, apps, social media, etc… instead since I opened an Google account and started using smartphones I could think many ways the opposite has happened for example with social media, Google services or Apple they just have make it more complicated and it kinda sucks now that I think about it 🤔 that and living in a very corrupt with many Organized criminals in this God forsaken place it’s a perfect devil formula combination for an catastrophe to everyone that loves to live free.

I like to use pCloud storage in the European region . I also use pClouds crypto for more sensitive stuff.
I remember when I first started hearing the term "cloud storage" it seemed like it was being advertised as a sort of decentralized system hosted by a service where pieces of your data would randomly be segmented, parsed and stored across hundreds or thousands of nodes spread across a variety of types and sizes of storage devices in an encrypted and innately secure way, kind of like how a torrent or even blockchain works. Maybe I wrongly presumed this because to me that kind of model is analogous to what a physical cloud is: billions of particles of water vapour that swirl around the atmosphere and when assembled form drops of rain that deliver the desired payload. The idea of a physical Data Center (a server farm owned by a single corporate entity) is incompatible with the concept of a "Cloud" - it's a bucket (their bucket).
Hahahaha! You had me giggling to myself with the out takes. Lucky no one was watching. Happy to say I've never trusted "the cloud". That may be why I failed science at scool because no teacher could show me the protons electrons and neutrons, just like the question about the physical address of cloud storage. You cannot see it.

I use cloud storage as i use a PC and sometimes a laptop. My documents can mouve between both computer and laptop. I also have a thumb drive to back up my documents and Music and Mods for a game i run. It is important to keep this stuff offline. Not inside a PC. The OS is not big deal as i boot Linux OS of a thumb drive.

I've found git to work pretty well for most of my files (excluding large images and videos), simplifying the synchronization, versioning, and merging vs raw files copies. Now my files are mirrored across 5 different locations - bring on the flooding :b.

Unfortunately people don't know the value of their data, very close people to me just don't care what happens to their data, or where it's stored. It's sad do see such blind trust in big tech.

I know exactly how that feels. I was kicked off of my Google email, which in return kicked me out of my Google drive, and made it so I couldn't access my crypto accounts. Luckily, I was able to get back access to most of it, but I still lost a good amount of crypto.
