I've been building this kit as well, about two months into the build, a bit farther along. From research, the nose and cockpit areas were painted a dark green, similar to Brunswick Green. The bomb bay area, per the instructions, was painted NG and the rear fuselage was aluminum. The lack of kit detail in the nose and radio compartment were real deficits. Some oddities- the bulkhead behind the flight deck didn't exist, Hobby Boss added it to cover up the lack of radio detail. Also, you could have saved yourself a great deal of work as the B-24D did not carry a ball turret. I separated the interior segments and fit them individually to make construction easier and I'm glad I did, the interior sections have to be trimmed to close up the fuselage. I'm having fun building the model, good value for money. BTW, very nice work on the Navigator's table.
Hey Jo.. Thank you for the comment. Since starting this project I have been in contact with a few museums and some vets. Depending on when and where the B-24 was built depended on options. The color is your choice. They changed that all the time and color was whatever they got in at the time. The B-24D did carry the ball turret on Later Variants. As for bulkheads I could not get a direct answer for some of today’s bombers that are flying have them and some pictures from WW2 have them and some don’t? I am not about to take them out of the model for structure issues. I will be building the B-24J and I plan to make changes on the outside to make look like it came off a different factory.
@@inclusivemodeldesigns16 Yes, there were interior painting differences although the nose areas stayed dark green- instrument panel was also green, something I did not know about the Lib. Since I'm building a Ploesti ship those did not carry the ball turret. They also did not carry the Norden bombsight on that particular mission- lucky as there is none in the kit. BTW, the nice cover art of Wongo Wongo over Ploesti is entirely fictional- she was the first ship lost, crashed into the Med before ever reaching the target.
@@jota6262 Well, Painting is your call.. From the photos I was given it did change. By the time the "J" was out they did not paint at all, just like the B-17. You can drive yourself nuts with it. You have to decide from the start of where your plane was manufactured really. Now as for the Ploesti raid you are correct. I was given a beautiful book called "INTO THE FIRE" filled with personal pictures and autographs from the mission. Maybe I will share them in a video? If you can find that book it is fantastic! It is a real account of what happened. Why HB chose Wongo I do not know? Honor? The B-24D kit does come with parts for the B-24J kit so that's why you have some extra goodies. Having the Nordon is correct for non PLOESTI versions. Same with Ball Turret etc. Also you could build a post PLOESTI B-24D for some planes went on to other missions and upgrades etc. www.amazon.ca/Into-Fire-Ploesti-Fateful-Mission/dp/1594160775
@@inclusivemodeldesigns16 You probably figured out the secret of this kit by now- it's a "J" with a "D" nose grafted on. From this build I'd definitely do the "J" kit if I had to chose between the two, the nitpicks are much fewer. Me, I've always been a sucker for the "D" so I'm pressing ahead. BTW, there's a bulkhead in the kit that fits under the navigator's table that covers the gaping nose wheel space- it's not mentioned in the instructions and just needs some thinning and it fits fine, plus your excellent "curtain" suggestion to cover the access hole. I'd highly recommend attaching the nose wheel door assemblies first then all the nose structures. I've enjoyed your vids, have picked up some great tips & ideas.
@@jota6262 Thank you for the fit issue tip. I am worried a bit about the fit issues when it come to joining the 2 halves. As for the "Curtain tip" thank you.. It is the one thing I cannot get a real answer on. Kermitt did a video on the "J" interior and showed the interior and it looked to be a "Radio Room"? But that was behind the Cockpit..... So yeah? When building these models a builder should get as much info as they can and then just go with it... If your happy with the end result then it's all good! For me I am trying to compile as much B-24D info as I can and compiling it into one plane. I may end up doing 2 B-24D planes. One for PLOESTI without all the parts and this one. Then a B-24J. It should wrap up the B-24 series? For a bomber that played a critical role it's so hard to get info on it! Sad really... Please though if you notice something let me know. Even though I am getting info from museums and vets, it's nice to get other builders views.
You and builders like you are the exact reason why I go to the extreme with all the details... With your build being "crashed" means the "can" is opened. The viewer will see all the goodies inside. That is why exactly why I put everything into my models seen & unseen. It gives those who watch my videos ideas for their builds.... Thank you my friend..
Inclusive Model Designs Thank you! I’m glad someone realizes Why we put all these extra details! Also, just wondering, are you aware the airfoil incorrect and needs to be changed? ( if you want it historically accurate...) there is a forum about it on Large scale Planes, if you want to. Yep I know that probably made your jaw drop... my plane is undergoing surgery right now
Scale Military Models Yes I am aware of the airfoil. I did take a look at the forum and although it’s a huge oversight on HB behalf, I personally will not attempt a correction. Some things I will just let go. Unless it’s a build like my 1/32 B-25B.
Hi Old Friend a very cool video indeed , your doing very well on it plenty of colour & detail I see , I hope your enjoying your time on the "24' , . Recently I received a full crew for the B17 from AC Models of NZ I can tell you that it is very well detailed & resin cast you can also get a Lancaster crew as well , I thought this would do for the "24" as well if your interested the product code is ACM32012 take a look see what you think all the crew are in individual bags so you know what is what , at the end of the day it's your choice but I think this bomber deserves all that we can give it , I hope you agree.
now you see 2 of the 4 problems with this kit next is the main wing once on the model & fitted then that's it ,it's on for good I hope you have plenty of room for it , lastly is the tail plane & stabilisers they are very frail the slightest knock & off they come .... oh well have fun with it .. oh a shame about wing nut wings would have been a great Lancaster
Well, I see less problems with this than with the HK models... As for the Wing Nuts I kinda had a feeling when it took so long. Maybe that's why the HK LANC is so bad? They felt there was a race?
@@inclusivemodeldesigns16 Don't get me wrong I hope your enjoying the "24" build & I enjoy your video log's so much so I do use them as reference , my only real point is I wish the main wing was detachable same as the "17" , but that's modelling it has it's own build problems as we come across them , I look forward to part 5 of your video log as always keep up the good builds .
Ok , whatever you choose will require a great deal od work" surprise surprise " . 1 . if wheels down ? then the nose area will need a lot of weight which could distort the fuselage extra bulk heads should be installed in this area to compensate for the added weight. 2 if wheels up ? than a strong metal rod through the bom bay into the main wing may be the way to go, being a very heavy plain you need to think 12 months from now , as I said my friend it's up to you ...the 2 of us are building the same plane at the same time I know what your going through .
If wheels down I wont add weight. I will just nail through the front wheel. As for the stand, I will have to drill/cut through lots of plastic.. Either way I will have to decide very soon.
@@inclusivemodeldesigns16 I'm building it now, 300g or over half a pound of weight is a lot to figure out where to place in the nose. I will probably go with a tail stand.
Did you see that one video from WW2 where FLAK or something got in and the plane just fell apart... Sad video, but WOW. Just kinda what your comment speaks of.
That one was a private build and is with it's owner now.. It is something that I would gladly build again though... Was a lot of fun! Also I built that before I had my channel.
Yes and I have a video of this and a few other builds. For some reason it gets half way downloaded and then that's it? I am not sure if the video is to long (which it's not) or if UA-cam is having issues... Upsetting!
Wow, it's great details of interior. No longer, it doesn't looks like a model. Thank you for building !!! : )
When someone says " It no longer looks like a model" It is one of the best things a builder can hear........ Thank you!
Outstanding video and presentation.
Very nice watching it come together. Great work, as always!
Thank you Mike... Glad you are liking it thus far.
