  • Yes, it's back in another video! No, not because it broke this time! 700 miles after the engine rebuild (and 800 after the transmission rebuild) we will check on how things are going with the truck.
    This is a small episode and unlike pretty much all of the past ones, there isn't a big project or undertaking happening here. Just an update for you guys on how the truck is doing, and a handful of small things to share about it and to check up on.

    Grew up in these trucks. 1987 and a 1991, that's the way those seats are. Came from the factory that way!

    My 93 s10 truck has many of the same issues with the interior. I also have a body lift and I cut the floor to clearance the 4x4 shifter. The door handles are a extremely common thing. The door locks need thinner lube since it's so cold where you live. The seats are weak. I've replaced mine with a set out of Baja seats out of a wrecked unit I towed some years back. I really want to put a v8 in mine. Maybe one day. But for a all original survivor I can't complain. 300k with original drive train, yes I mean the manual transmission too!

    I have a factory tan 1994 GMC Jimmy STR 4x4 in decent condition that I got for $1400. So far I’ve just had to replace the distributor with cap, ignition coil, door handle spring, idler arm, rear window lift supports, and a fuel pump. I’ve done all of the diagnostics and repairs myself and it’s very satisfying. It’s been fun browsing your videos. I’m happy leaving mine stock. Great work on the documentation. I’m sure turning a wrench is a passion of yours since you’ve made so much work for yourself for zero monetary gain. That oil filter location alone says you love lots of extra work!

    Take advantage of all the clearance under the hood and get a decent 14" filter on that carb. The Engine Masters guys showed that those dinky filters rob HP.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +6

      I have tried, believe me lol. Even a raised base filter hits the distributor (it's a big cap) and the radiator hose. Going to try a phenolic carb spacer on it for heat reasons and then I'll bet I can fit the bigger filter on.

    I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but me and my buds have had the best luck with rebuilt quadrajet carbs. You can usually find them all over and rebuilt kits are dirt cheap. A little time and attention to detail and you walk away with a pretty reliable unit, not to mention how well they work off road on extreme angles. For what it's worth that's been my experience....

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +3

      Funny you should suggest a Quadrajet, I just bought one the other day! Have rebuilt it but not installed it yet, I have always heard they are the best carbs for fuel economy so once I gave up on getting better MPGs out of the one on there I looked around for the right Qjet for a while.

    • @akmudslinger01

      Awesome! Some guys set the secondary's to come in really late, forcing the majority of the usage through the primary's. Makes for not making power until deep into the throttle, but helps with economy. Love the series btw, thanks for sharing this process with us, I'll probably come back and reference some of this for my own projects...

    great stuff man have really enjoyed your projects. BTW, as to your dodgy oil presure guage - check the groud wire for the gauge cluster (see factory wiring diagram) both at the firewall and the back of the cluster - if both are good then you most likely have a "broken" ground connection in the printed circuit on the back of the cluster - a junkyard part but a total hoo-R to retrieve and replace. Good luck and keep the videos coming!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +1

      Sounds like a likely tip, I'll check the connection at the firewall but doubt it's that, most likely it's a circuit board issue. I tried to get to the gauge cluster to lube the speedo cable but gave up when I realized how much has to come off to get the cluster out and how little room there is behind it, so I don't need to know the oil pressure THAT badly right now lol

    #FuzzyDicePimp
    On the Edelbrock carbs, the vacuum secondaries are left a little bit open from the factory, and that usually ends up causing the idle to not lower properly. There's a tab on the passenger side that will lock the secondaries closed until half throttle. Bend that tab so it holds the secondary shaft closed, but not so tight as to cause the throttle to not reset closed.

    I had an 86 Blazer that the 4x4 lever was always hard to move, one day I discovered it had a grease fitting in it. Made it a lot easier to move.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +1

      Yep, I have greased it and it moves nice and easy. Not sure how you're supposed to access that fitting, but the boot under the body was a little torn so I just "adjusted" it and got to it that way. The 4Lo problem is due to misalignment of the linkage from the body lift.

    Sounds like a stuck open thermostat if the heat drops. The thermostat should just close at higher speeds keeping your heat nice and warm. You described cooler water passing through the heater core.. justa thought

    • @DanJLeh
      @DanJLeh 6 років тому

      Integra DIY Or just at highways speed the thermostat isn't making a making a huge impact on keeping the coolant warm due to the large radiator and very cold temps.

    • @IntegraDIY
      @IntegraDIY 6 років тому +2

      SevensGaming “Or just at highways speed the thermostat isn’t making a huge impact on keeping the coolant warm due to a large radiator and very cold temps”
      The thermostat is a valve that opens and closes depending on coolant temp. When the temp drops, the thermostat closes trapping coolant in the engine, the heater core gets coolant straight from the engine.. sounds like a thermostat issue but could be wrong

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +1

      You're right on that, the heater core is connected to the intake manifold so it always has flow regardless of the thermostat. Don't think it's sticking open though, it's more that the flow of cold air over the cab with almost no insulation overpowers the heat and the freezing cold air over the rad is enough that the thermostat is mostly closed, the temperature on the gauge on the highway stays at like 160 in this weather. A 195 thermostat would start (and finish) opening later and that should help out there. My left side (next to the door) gets considerably colder than my right side.

    • @DanJLeh
      @DanJLeh 6 років тому

      FuzzyDicePimp sounds like door seals from lmc truck and some cardboard are in order in cold temps.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +1

      It needs them for sure, the exhaust is a bit loud but the wind noise is much louder than it on the highway. Not in the cards for this winter but if I end up driving it long enough I will have to replace those seals. EDIT: and blocking part of the radiator with cardboard is a good tip, but I'm not THAT bothered by it. Yet.

    On my 86 caprice I had the tc lock up wired to a toggle switch through the ecm signal wire , just flip the switch and it would lock up and if you had to stop the stock brake switch would un lock it as long a you where on the pedal , kind of annoying but better than dropping 100 + on a tci kit

    Try an oil filter adapter from a 92-96 Corvette. It will allow you to use a PF52 oil filter which has a smaller diameter. May help you. Also make sure PCV system is routed correctly which may be causing oil leak at fill cap. Good luck!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +1

      PCV is good to go, just a single hose to the carb base vacuum, and valve is new and checks out, breather on the opposite cover. I have seen a picture of one of those Corvette adapters on a 4wd S10 before, might work but not sure about it with my exhaust routing. Also not sure how to find one for cheap, other than getting lucky at a junkyard.

    The way I would adjust valves if valve covers were easy to remove would be to install rocker stoppers on the oil hole on the rockers to not make a mess, then start the engine and loosen each rocker but just until it would start to click, then I'd tighten until it just stopped, then go a half turn. Then repeat on remaining cylinders.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому

      Yeah, I need to get some rocker stoppers. Somebody else (or was it you?) told me to use them in a comment before, sounds like a great idea to keep from making a big mess.

  • @jamesross4308

    I'm not sure if you have looked into it yet but there is an external oil filter adapter chevy made for trucks and these blazers. I'm almost 100% sure that you can get a housing adapter and relocate the filter to the front driver side of the engine bay. I have one on my 4.3 cpi engine. Hopefully this can help you find a direction for what you're going to do with it. Love the build by the way, I might try a swap with mine later down the road. Thanks for the great content.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +3

      James Ross The 4.3L one won't work, this truck came with one and I had hoped to reuse it but the engine block filter mounting pads are different, so no such luck. Plan to get an aftermarket universal one and modify it to keep the 4.3L relocation parts.

    on the seats there is a lever on the back that goes bad and allowed them to move freely w/o locking into place, If i remember you can replace the hinge assembly that contains both the lever and spring to fix the issue, I had to do this on my old S-10 Durango( i still miss it too).

    Have you considered getting a shop heater? I have the one that mounts on top of a propane tank. They work very well. There is nothing worse than having frozen hands and your wrench slips! OUCH!!!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому

      Agreed! I have a propane tank one, it works in close quarters but isn't enough to warm the three-car garage much. I use an electric space-heater because it's convenient, but even less heat than the propane one. Interested in forced air Kerosene heaters as I have felt the kind of heat they put out, but they're often pretty loud and put off a lot of fumes.

    I installed a 180 degree thermostat on my 86 S10 (2.5 4 cyl) after I saw you installing one on your 350, and I immediately noticed the difference in cabin temperature. But I guess I'll take a cooler cabin over blown head gaskets.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому

      I mostly went for that because the 4.3L radiator seemed small for the V8, and I wanted to stay on the safe side. I don't think you would need one for any reason on a factory setup, though. Engines also run a bit more efficiently with the factory (195) thermostat.

    • @jordanseymour6526
      @jordanseymour6526 6 років тому

      FuzzyDicePimp According to a user on the S10 forums, the 2.5 changes ignition timing to control knock based on engine temperatures. A 180 degree t stat (supposedly) smooths out the idle and stops the ignition control module from jumping timing all over the place.

    The seats should have an inertia lock that keeps them from tilting while decelerating... see if you can move the passenger seatback forward while you brake. IIRC, they're supposed to move like that so back seat passengers can exit easily.

      @kokocostanza2036 6 років тому +5

      I think it'd be a lot cheaper, lighter, and simpler than adding a positive ratchet lock; it's just a swinging pendulum that engages a toothed wheel, similar to how seatbelts lock.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +3

      You nailed it, they are inertia locks. Passenger seat locked up tight when braking hard. I never would have thought of that and nobody else mentioned it, thanks for the info!

    • @NevinWilliams71
      @NevinWilliams71 6 років тому +3

      Well, it might have something to do with your channel demographics for the 45-54 age group: those of us old enough to have first-hand knowledge of those seats when they were current and know they weren't broken, then the fraction of those who'd own a GM of that vintage rather than another make, and then an even smaller fraction who would have owned a two door GM, AND who comment on UA-cam videos.
      I figure it's just me and Koko. :)

    On the seats I do know that my seatbelts did not stay buckled, I would look into reproductions or aftermarkets. There were a couple times where I reached over and the buckle came undone. As for the seat that happens on both my s10 bench seat and my Dodge Shadow, I think the bench seat is supposed to do that, but the shadow is not since passenger side latches.

    Not the same car, but similar era GM car, my 92 Camaro has the same issue with the seats not locking forward (I always thought they were broken some how but maybe that is some weird design). My power locks also do the same thing as yours, sometimes if I press the button enough times it will work the level over but normally it just gets stuck. Let me know if you come up with a fix, I wasn't sure if it was gunked up in there or the solenoids have just gotten weak over time.

    • @jimmy86mustang
      @jimmy86mustang 5 років тому

      The seats are designed with an inertial lock. During an accident, hard braking, or on an incline they will lock. Otherwise they're free to tip forward. The power locks stick because the door latches get gummed up and the lock solenoids aren't strong enough to overcome the old grease and dirt. Also the linkages tend to be sloppy so most of the force of the lock solenoids just goes into pushing the linkage around rather than locking or unlocking the doors.

    The seats could either be a weak spring or some of the pivot points for the seat adjuster needs lubed....third and the least likely would be a worn out notch or broken "peg" that goes into the notch to lock it

      AFR and a less worn-out carb would be really nice, but not in the budget right now and too busy with other things (Would probably pay itself off just from gas savings in the long run though.)

    It's amazing to me how much power you lose when you have an exhaust leak close to the manifold. "They", say back-pressure is BS but there is definitely something going on there.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому +2

      I can't say I've been able to notice my manifold/header leaks causing performance issues, but maybe on a track or something it would be more apparent than everyday driving. This engine ran funny when it had open manifolds, that's for sure, but I can't tell if there is actually a power difference. I would expect that having low/basically no backpressure could have a real effect on some aspects of engine function, but I have no idea how significant that effect could be.

    My 86 blazer has almost all of the issues you listed on yours lol. I think you can chalk it up to it being old and crappy. My blazer has 326,000 on the clock. I was considering doing a V8 swap like you but mine is a Manual 4x4 and the T5 non world class is a little weak for a V8. I'll probably do a 3800 Supercharged swap this summer.

    Are you running a proper pcv system/ valve? that can affect idle quality as well.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому

      Yep, it has a PCV valve in the passenger side valve cover and a breather on the driver's side cover. I'm pretty sure the loose throttle shaft bore is what is causing most of its weird problems, like not consistently being able to set the idle as low as I want it. Looking to get another carb for it anyway, probably a Q-jet, since I can't get it over 12 MPG as-is (still no TC lockup).

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 років тому

      You want the ones from a late 80's very early 90's low power 305 Camaro. The driver's side one I have is for one of those, while the passenger side manifold is from a late 90's Caprice 305. Seems to have a smaller diameter though, so I'd try to stick with a pair from a Camaro.

      That truck probably has more gear (and possibly tire) than this one, and weighs around 1000lbs more on top of that. With this very mild engine and a lockup four speed I should be able to get at least 15 out of it on the highway.
