I vote we outlaw the use of the term "bigger" in dino docs, especially if we are going for the lazy Rex comparison. Instead, it should specify longer, taller, and/or heftier. Then there is no confusion over what "bigger" means.
I believe it usually means mass, so T rex is infact the biggest.
@@Tyrannosaurus_rex. Mass wise, absolutely. However, the word can refer to other things. For instance, a beach ball is bigger than a dumbbell in terms of dimensions, but not in terms of mass.
@@Ahalaya yes, but for animals, generally things that have bigger dimensions are heavier. A blue whale is alot more chunky than a lion mane jellyfish so it looks heavier.
@@Tyrannosaurus_rex. The point still remains that "bigger" does not necessarily mean "heavier". A giraffe is taller than an elephant. Spinosaurus was longer than T Rex.
@@Ahalaya but it's still obivious that an elephant is heavier, it is wider.
Spinosaurus is an excellent evidence that one article is not all, science works with peer review and response articles correcting other scientists, so when some ground breaking article make headsline on a totally new thing for a dinosaur, we should keep in mind that it will probably change several times, before a consensus is found ^^
Yet the general consensus can be seen over the last 7 years or so. Spinosaurus is clearly not the animal it was portrayed before.
The only reason why there is so much discourse is due to lack of research.
@@Deform-2024 can you elaborate?
@@diegopugaquintanilla4344 The 'neotype' specimen has yet to receive a full biomechanic analysis and no one knows when it will get one. There are so many questions on it's anatomy that cannot be determined with confidence. Or at in a way that everyone can agree with.
@@Deform-2024 thank you, I didn't know that about the most recent spinosaurus reconstruction
No wins for accurate behaviour, despite a focus on hunting and fighting? Fine, I'll do it myself:
1. One of the two Carchars retreats after losing the territorial battle
2. The Spino decides not to mess with the Sarcho that's claimed a water hole
3. The Carchar backs off after the Spino slaps it a couple of times
4. The Epidexes don't go at each other's throats when contesting over prey, they just wiggle their tail feathers
5. The Saurornithoides doesn't chase after the Oviraptor, which is is a lost cause for it
6. The two Gigantoraptors don't tear each other to pieces during a mating rights battle
7. The Sinornithosaurus gives up chasing the Microraptor after a while instead of brutally pursuing it
8. The Sinornithosaurus decides not to directly attack the bigger Jehelo alone and instead gets the jump on it with friends
9. The Chasmosaurus is presented as a formidable opponent to the Daspletos, despite its frill and horns not being very useful protection wise. Only when other Daspletos show up does it panic and run
10. You mentioned in your previous review that the Daspletos charging into the Centro herd was suicidal. However, in one brief shot, you can see them running amongst smaller Centros, indicating they were targeting weaker juveniles. They were also NOT credited as the ones that massacred the herd, but the weather
11. You also mentioned that the Majunga targeting the other Majunga was suicidal. However, it was desperate, it had threatened her baby, and it KNEW the dangers, as it snuck up on it instead of directly attacking it
12. Am surprised there were no wins for the Stegos and Camptos symbiotic relationship
13. You already presented this as a win: Stego not being cannon fodder
14. Allo doesn't chase after the Stegos like a bloodthirsty killer after being injured
15. Allo retreats after the Saurophaganax claims its kill with a warning bite to the face
16. Predator X only tries to attack the Kimmerosaurus group after the tide rises, giving it room
17. Skorpio GTFOs after seeing an Argentino
18. Mapus take a couple of snacks and then leave after one of their pals is crushed
19. Sarco gives up after Carchar wins the tug of war instead of trying to pursue it
20. Carchar also GTFOs after the Paralatitan gang up on it for attacking their baby
21. Skorpios wait until the Mapus leave the carcass for their turn instead of swarming it like a mob
22. The Hatzegopteryx only target juvenile Magys instead of pecking the adults to death
23. The Alectro flees after the Gigantoraptor pair square up to it
24. The Alectro pair flee after one Gigantoraptor bullies them from its nest
25. The "Zunityrannus" backs off after it's slapped by the Nothro. A group shows up thinking they can do better but they retreat too after being outmatched
26. The Bradychneme is obviously scared by the Hatzegopteryx
Also, no wins for that gorgeous and accurate Allosaurus design? The hatchet theory might be out there, but Carnotaurus having bright blue signalling arms also is. I wouldn't call it ridiculous, at least for the time.
Thank you good peep, did a good service for us all today.
Yeah, when watching this show, the last thing that came into my mind was, “This show is focused way too much on unrealistic combat and violence.”
@@gojitsar7505 I just made a list showing that the overused combat and hunting WERE realistic.
@@starzilla624 he means that the LAST thing that came to mind was that, as to say, they agree with you
@@diegopugaquintanilla4344 oh okay, oops.
Personally, seeing Planet Dinosaur for the first time was part of what got me into paleontology, so it's my favorite dino documentary
This documentary is actually the one that got me interested in dinosaurs as animals of the past rather than just cool beasts of destruction so it definitely holds a special place in my heart and he's still one of my favorite documentaries on dinosaurs. Despite being outdated, obviously but it's still really awesome. Can't wait to see how Prehistoric Planet updates the depictions of these amazing animals.
Fun fact, the narrator is actually John Hurt, you may recognize him from some movies such as Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and Lord of the Rings. IMO, his voice just makes this doc all the more memorable. Like John Goodman and WDRA.
And Alien. He’s Kane, the first victim of the xenomorphs.
John Hurt also voiced the Horned King in Disney’s adaptation called “The Black Cauldron”.
He also voiced Sailor John in the Thomas the Tank Engine movie, Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure.
RIP John Hurt, the War Doctor.
@@joshuaW5621 Dude, I was literally about to bring that up, too. John did a great voice acting job in that film.
Absolutely love these reviews. The most entertaining ones are the outdated documentaries you tear open with a quick fact check 😂
Honestly, I thought planet dinosaur would not get a straight A.
On one hand there are a lot of accuracies and accurate design choices for the time but in the other hand you have a lot of weird inaccuracies or somewhat funky designs.
There is also a lot of healthy speculation that makes a lot of sense as well. Overall I think it does get a well-deserved B+ but not a straight A.
Sure enough, it gets the B!
Prehistoric Planet is coming and I can't wait for your review on it and looking back at that Allosaurus bite force theory is hilarious thank you for correcting my childhood
That little Markiplier clip of the very first Tiny Box Tim reference actually made me chuckle a bit and just absolutely made my day dude! Thanks 😅
Awesome video too btw my dude!😉👍
Been binge watching these all Ramadan, love this series 💙
Your Muslim? I'm Muslim too!
@@NormalMuslim7 yup!
This was the first dinosaur documentary I’ve seen and I would have gave it an A.
I hope to one day see you cover Prehistoric Planet when it comes out. Based on the trailers alone, I'm giving it an A+
I love your videos raptor, your sense of humor and of course subject matter are great. I would like to note that it was cool how you humbled yourself in this video and didn’t shy away from the fact that you’re not the end all be all
Have you considered reviewing Dinosaur Britain? It’s a fun documentary and I think that it portrays its dinosaurs very well, especially the Baryonyx.
It's on the list ;)
I love the show not only talks about and shows fossil evidence for what happens in the episodes, the lighting edit and effects all together makes the animals & environments feel so real.
Can't wait for your (possible) 3 part review for Prehistoric Planet 2022
Can’t wait for the Prehistoric Planet Dino Doc review, when it’s out
I think the 2018 BBC series "Deadly Dinosaurs with Steve Backshall" would answer many of the questions you've had about "Planet Dinosaur". Just imagine a series that reuses footage from "Walking with", "The Truth About Killer Dinosaurs" and "Planet Dinosaur" together with its own "experiments". While it addresses a couple of wrong and outdated points from those, most are still repeated.
Speaking of experiments, "Planet Dinosaur" had a companion series for younger audience "Planet Dinosaur Files", which was done in a similar format.
By the way, there's a whole documentary "Predator X" about the animal and its discovery.
And an unrelated question - do you have any plans to return to skipped older documentaries, like "Paleoworld" (every episode review would probably be one big "Outdated" section) or "When Dinosaurs Ruled"? There are so many paleodocs left to cover.
This is the documentary to go to when you want to learn how dinosaurs interacted with eachother, that’s the entire point of it. That ends up being a lot of predator prey relationships, but not entirely. And they definitely treat their subject matter with respect
when I was younger I used to watch this documentary over and over because it felt the most real out of all of them, still one of my favorites to this day
Damn, its so good to see you cover this documentary, and Im really glad you didnt go with the popular opinion of this being the best one out there, and judged it accordingly, seems like Sea Monsters is staying ontop for a while.
However, I do have one question to ask you, and its something im really intrigued on, what your opinion on the whole Allosaurus/Epanterias/Saurophaganax thing? I think its really interesting to see at it, and I was expecting to see you cover it due to Saurophaganax making a small cameo in this documentary, but, this video is still amazing regardless, Great Content man!
One other great thing about the extinction event is unlike probably every other dino documentary has it be in hell creek featuring t rex triceratops edmontosaurus and so on instead focused on the hastsag island and the dinosaurs since they lived at the same time
That was a legendary decision.
R.I.P the narrator John Hurt
I love your videos and I want to thank you for using the metric system in your videos! It's so much easy to follow that way.
18:37 Now that is hilarious!
After part 1 ive been really excited for this!
Hey Red Raptor, I'm from Germany and I think your videos are great. Especially those you discuss documentation. Very educational. I look forward to more. I recently stumbled across a documentary on UA-cam called Amazing Dinoworld. There are two episodes (on UA-cam) and it shows a Mosasaurus chasing down and killing a Spinosaurus and later a T-Rex. I think that's a bit exaggerated. Maybe that would be something for you.
Love to see you review Amazing Dinoworld
Solid review in two parts Red Raptor, I honestly can see the positives and acknowledgement to paleontology study of the time, I may have to rewatch it with a new look to the series. Looking forward to what comes next, could you possibly do Prehistoric America soon, I'd be intrigued to hear your review for that series. Until then, stay safe, stay amazing and have a great day.
THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH FOR USING AN ARMY OF DARKNESS CLIP FOR T. REX!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES FOR MY FAVORITE DINOSAUR!! 🦖
Great video as always! :D
Red Raptor Writes: Finally the most requested documentary is done.
Prehistoric Planet: Ok
The BBC released a documentary about the last day of the dinosaurs, presented by David Attenborough, and I think it would be worth reviewing
I can't wait for the Amazing Dinoworld ranking
Just the content I needed today
Looking forward to the amazing dino world review.
Yyyyeeeeeesss let’s go but I think next should you should do prehistoric 2009
Good review as always! I was wondering, with new dino docs coming out just about now (Dinosaurs: The final Day and Prehistoric Planet) will you do a different kind of review, since they *should* be up to date with the most recent discoveries, or we'll just habe to wait some time to know what you think of them?
Surprised saurophaganax wasn't brought up. Also if you want to see an old dino doc I would recommend Dinosaur! narrated by Christopher Reeve
Fun fact: the narrator John Hurt was in the greatest Thomas the Tank Engine movie, Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure.
I hope you do a review of prehistoric planet when it comes out, that series looks spectacular, and if you did a review on it, that would be great
From what I've seen of it so far it looks like it's an easy S+ Tier
@@binnsy6879 agreed
Finally part 2
One of my favourite parts of this Dino doc is the music, it slaps so hard
So far, Planet Dinosaur has the best pliosaur representations so far
No kidding, everything else is just a copy paste of the infamous 25-meter liopleurodon from WWD. (5 times longer than the real animal)
Seriously, how did Tim Haines fuck up so badly? HOW!?
@@maxrichards3881 true, sea monsters did em dirty by giving plios like 3 seconds of screen time 😭😭😭 and chased by sea monsters just recycled the liopleurodon from WWD😭😭
Everybody be doing Pliosaurs dirty, i will forever wait for the day a documentary gives this clade of unique marine predators some spotlight
@@EndreaiYT
To be fair to NatGeo's Sea Monsters, Pliosaurs were very rare in the Campanian stage of the late cretaceous.
I love the 2007 Sea Monsters so much because it was the first dino documentary I ever watched. I saw it on release day at the end of my very first trip to the Boston Museum of Science as a 6 year old.
I did watch Prehistoric Park earlier that year, but that's more of an entertainment-based show.
@@maxrichards3881 hopefully if Prehistoric Planet ever does a segment on the Jurassic (which they probably will do) they will give Pliosaurs some justice
@@EndreaiYT
I hope they cover my homeland of Massachuetts for the early Jurassic. It would cover a lesser known formation; the Connecticut river valley. I want to see Dilophosaurus, Anchisaurus, and Podokesaurus (the state dinosaur) roaming my home 195 mya.
19:16 this argument can be used for the ”flesh grazing” hypothesis too. Herbivores aren’t just walking meat bags, they where probably capable of defending itself
And it does in a later clip
Yeah, that’s why the Mapusaurus ambushed an unwary individual.
Something I feel is important to understand about the 2021 paper is that it refutes the subaqueous pursuit model of hunting for Spino. Not the ambush model which is gaining traction now. Spino’s aquatic hunting probably was more like the hunting style of alligator snapping turtles or certain river dwelling snakes. They ambushed prey over chasing prey.
The problem with the 2021 paper involvement in your claim is that it doesn’t refute the subaqueous ambush model for spino.
Again, pursuit style hunting is different from ambush style hunting.
Subaqueous ambushing doesn’t make sense either. The position of the nostrils only makes sense if he held his head above the surface, dipping the tip of the snout into the water. If he waited subaqueous, he would have needed to stick almost the entire head out of the water.
@@erikhamann if you mean surfacing the top of the skull like that sure. But it doesn’t conclusive debunk the ambush model especially if spino could have hold their breath for a long time or hunted in areas where it could take breaths with little notice, especially smaller spinos. And again, doesn’t mean it couldn’t do both. The nostrils may be so high up the snout to allow for a mix of hunting behaviours. Especially during times or areas where an ambush model doesn’t work. Although yes, it would make the position of the nostrils odd in this case.
But it definitely has more weight to it than the pursuit model and doesn’t contradict the wading model. Especially if it was done by certain age ranges of spinos more frequently than others. But we can’t say much on that part anyhow.
@@erikhamann So? Birds have retracted nostrils too, and so did pliosaurs.
Loved watching your review.
Allosaurus is one of my favorite Dinosaurs (I like Ceratosaurus to, don't ask me wich one would win), and the theory of ramming his head into an other Dinosaur sounds hilarious.
I imagine it more like (but that should be easy to correct or state it as true, if looking on the neck muscles and the movement range) a slower snake bite without ramming the upper jaw into it's victim, moving his head really fast to get a swift bite on it's prey.
The combination of the teeth and bite force, as they are more suitable for slicing meat as for grabbing and braking bones, should be a good idea.
I imagine Allosaurus as a relatively slender and agile Hunter for various types of prey.
And the loose pack theory is highly likely, even if I like the idea of a some sort of stable group with some kind of hierarchy more.
But this is just a wish.
In the previous part, I claimed that Spinosaurus could weigh up to 10 tons. Clearly I was letting nostalgia get in the way of what we know about my favorite dinosaur. As somebody pointed out to me, Spinosaurus weighed 7 tons; possibly weighing up to 8.
Basically the same
Given the rate at which Spinosaurus keeps changing, I am not surprised that its supposed maximum weight estimates have been all over the place, across the years.
Do you plan to review "Amazing Dino World"? it's only 2 episodes but it's the first dino doc I've seen with a modern reconstruction of deinocheirus.
YUP
You forgot a detail with every single documentary you scene that dinosaurs couldn't Roar
I mention it sometimes but I won't repeat myself for every documentary.
We currently have 0 evidence that's supports the over-glorified idea that dinosaurs can roar. The closest thing to dinosaurs roaring is a loud squawk or bellow.
Oh yes I’m so glad you liked the mapusaurus it was what everyone was crossing their fingers about. Mapusaurus is so beautiful in this series it’s my favourite dinosaur due to this series existing.
Easily my favorite charcharodontosaurian.
Not my favorite carnosaur, though. That’s Spino.
@@maxrichards3881 carcharodontosaurid, not -saurian.
@@azhdarchidae66 That's on Red Raptor for mixing up the terminology in his segment on the "Tyrannosaur" title.
I was hoping you would make a video with the accuracy of Planet Dinosaur. Thanks for granting me my wish.
I am honestly scared about the upcoming Walking With Dinosaurs (2013) review lol
I still remember RickRaptor105’s review of that film:
“Okay, you know what? I will continue to use the names they use in this movie, so everyone understands which animals of this movie I am talking about. This is Edmontosaurus. This is Gorgosaurus. This is Troodon…”

With Spinosaurus: I think both papers from 2021 and 2022 give valid information. I believe that Spino might hunt with the shoreline feeding method, but it was capeable to swim in the rivers just to move around its enviroment to find new feeding spots and stuff.
Beeing a decend swimmer might be pretty important in a such wet enviroment if the water contains your main feeding sources, but that doesn't mean that you have to be a such good swimmer that you catch them while swimming and went for another hunting strategy.
Yeah, it is like saying alligator snapping turtles have to be adapt swimmers, they just need to be good enough. Spinosaur could have multiple hunting methods especially for different areas of the region and different seasons.
Maybe if it was buoyant enough it could swim on the surface of the water in a duck like manner and strike any fish from above? Or maybe it was so dense that it walked on the bottom of the river and striked from below? There are so many possibilities.
@@fabricreative1930 spino had quite dense bones, so it probably walked on the river bottom like a hippo.
Yes I was waiting for ages
I personally think that as Allo's jaws are a very narrow V shape it'd be maximising cutting power. Sharks use side to side thrashing to work their teeth and the serrations(denticles) on their teeth to cut through meat like a bone saw, shark's jaws are very wide and they maximise lateral cutting power, Allo could its neck and body to power fowards and backwards actions to work their teeth through meat. Their high arched skull would absorb and dissipate stress and strain the process would put on the tooth row. Same for carcharodontosaurids, although with less emphasis on neck movement.
THE ALMIGHTY VIDEO IS HERE!
The hilarious thing was that this depiction of Hatzegopteryx, which is considerably less terrifying than the actual thing, is still the scariest thing in the entire program.
Oh, hell yes. Aasdarkids (I hope I’m spelling that right) have terrified me since I saw Clash of the Dinosaurs (RIP 9 year old me’s intelligence).
It’s a real shame that clash is the best Quetzalcoatlus portrayal in any dinosaur documentary I know of.
@@maxrichards3881 Quetz has had better portrayals elsewhere.
@@bkjeong4302
Like March of the dinosaurs, where it’s shown as an obligate scavenger? I think not.
My opinion the reason allosaurus had strong neck muscles is when it bit you, it would use it's neck to rip out large pieces of meat.
Let’s also remember that Allosaurus has relatively large hands and claws for a Large Theropod, so it could’ve used them when killing as well.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Saurophaganax and the debate over whether or not he's a valid species.
Let me guess.
It’s possibly a junior synonym of Torvosaurus?
@@maxrichards3881 Actually, no. Some scientists think it's actually an ALLOSAURUS and should be renamed Allosaurus Maxiumus.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the strange bit about botulism. Don't get me wrong it makes sense that given how unpicky dinosaurs were that occasionally, even if they had digestive systems like vultures, somehow killer diseases would spread. But it's implied that because there were mass graves of theropods that somehow that was the most likely reason for it. Floods, watering holes during droughts, or predator traps don't even get mentioned.

Fun Fact: the spinosaurus was worked on partly by a site called everything dinosaur. It is a site that sell dinosaur models toys and games they are stationed in the Uk.
Spinosaurus is also in Amazing Dino World (excited for that one) and eventually Prehistoric Planet when we get there!
Just out of curiosity, are you planning to do an episode on Animal Armageddon? That came out in 2009. It’s got some VERY inaccurate dinosaur depictions, but I enjoy it nonetheless.
Tysm for that the batman clip, noone would ever want to not see that

Mapusaurus is my second favourite Dinosaur ever everything about it is just cool this is the documentary that makes me love this Charcharadontosaur
How Allosaurus killed prey has been answered: it wields a gun!
Will u review NHKs amazing dinoworld in the future?
Technically because of the outdated spino we can’t even get an accurate documentary, spinosaurus was built like a swordfish wearing a floatation device, it would spend most of it’s day relaxing, floating at the surface, basking using it’s sail and probably sleep in calmer safe areas, and for hunting it would sort of dive down and dash like a swordfish, using it’s sail, tail and back legs to propel itself forward and steer (since if it slowed down it would be floated back up to the surface) and use it’s jaws and arms to quickly snap up and stab fish with it’s thumbs before running out of energy and floating back up, and that was the main reason it spent most of it’s time floating and basking to warm up and get energy, and it would just constantly float and let itself be pushed by the waves like modern crocs do nowadays to spare energy, another thing to note is that it couldn’t stand up on land, it’s legs were too small and brittle and it’s sail would tip it over, and since it’s so big and heavy crawling was just not an option, so seriously this dude did nothing but float around reevaluating it’s life choices and wondering why it went from such a powerful predator like megalosaurus and megaraptor into this thing that just does nothing but float, occasionally diving down to catch fish since there was barely nothing at the surface
In reference to the beginning. Damn you Spinosaurus for being so confusing.
For real though, there's a reason it's my favorite.
I hope you also do the curiosity stream dino docummemtary
There are so many Prehistoric docs like the Amazing Dinoworld but there has never never been The Most Hyped Doc (expect for Prehistoric Planet) Than Planet Dinosaur Aka PD

I thought this was going to be a C or D because of the issues that were in part 1.
I wonder what’s next for documentary reviews, plus… can you please do a review of Walking With Dinosaurs 3D. It comes in 2013.
Yeah, part 2 is A- material, and fixes many issues that part 1 had. The reason the problem section lasted so long here is because a lot of what Red Raptor said was new, so he had to go more in depth with it. The Hatchet bite section lasted 2 whole minutes.
Have you done a video with the accuracy of Walking with Cavemen?
I know you’ve probably already been asked this, but is it possible to do a review on the new Prehistoric Planet?

This is going to sound odd, seeing as it isn't a documentary (but it is educational), have you ever thought of reviewing the episode of the Magic School Bus TV Series; The Busasaurus?
You gotta admit, seeing an Allo get owned by a stegosaurus is always a treat
I’m a little late, but I wanted ask if was possible that you could review all the dinosaurs from Dinosaur Ming in terms of accuracy
I know I may be late for the upload, but what in the case of Mapusaurus actually being that of Giganotosaurus? Both are in the same family group.
