The smile on Bentley's face pulling into that driveway is about as good life can get right there. Some of my best memories are road tripping with my dad, just two boys, dad, a squarebody chevy with a box camper in the back going across Canada, no plan, just a map and lots of pee breaks.
I lost my father in 1967 when I was 7 years old and grew up without a father figure. To see what you are doing for your family and the boys is just unbelievable . What a great trip Derek, the little guy will remember this for the rest of his life! I am in my mid 40s now and I can still vividly remember the hunting and fishing trips I used to take with my Pops back when I was a kid.
This trip looks like a blast! I would flip the plane tickets online and find another beat up rust free California scoot, find a sponsor, and hobble it back home. Maybe see if those crazy Hoonigans got a ride for cheap. This looks too fun to fly back and end it so quickly. Somebody always knows a guy with something to sell. Little Grip getting a lifetime of stories to tell his buddies and kids about his Ol' man. Love the content!
I agree. Best memories are me pops and gramps in a old Ford econoline van roadtrpping through the desert and going to Bodie in 1973. Wild burros eating my dads cigars, the abandoned town, the huge rattlesnake cruising down the road. We camped down the old road next to a spring fed stream, nothing like the desert sky at night. There is another mining camp that, if I remember right was called San Andreas or something like that. Cool place. Hiking around we found arrow heads, old whiskey bottles and all sorts of cool stuff even an old broke open safe in a gully. We panned and found gold, I swear my pops had the midas touch, he found more gold than anyone. He taught me to always look at the ground and survey your surroundings, you never know what may be there just waiting to be discovered.
I still remember when I first met you at the FF. It was after the first race with viewers. I was working as volunteer medical stand by and You were leaving and stuck in traffic and came out to chat about the backup. My dad used to take my sister and I on long road trips most summers. We drove to California from south Texas one summer. We hit all the cool stuff along the way. Great memories. My dad was diagnosed with dementia about 3 years ago. It advanced super fast. He doesn't remember who my sister and I are anymore, let alone the road trips. But, even if he can't remember these road trips and all the stories, my sister and I can. And I will always cherish those trips.
So sorry for your personal situation, just remember that y'all are not alone. Brother, this is one of the best trips a person could ever embark on, and to take your son along with you is just wonderful! Its almost become a forgotten journey to people-especially young people. I remember taking watching the movie "CARS" with my son Jacob and how much truth the (cartoon movie) displayed about how the old highway has been left behind; the same with Doc Hudson going from Champion to "has been." The only thing that stays the same is change, and the only thing that lasts forever is the Love a person gives! Thats why your son will remember this trip forever and such a wonderful gift to give from you; I think every person should take a cruise down the "mother road" at least once in their lifetime...the shift in perspective from it would be enlightening for anyone who does. If I weren't so slammed with work at the moment I would help you swap that T400 out overnight at my shop "MidnightOils Restoration" so you wouldn't miss a beat, especially since you will be going right by here on your way down route 66 where I live in Claremore, Oklahoma! Keep up the great work and God Bless you! Ryan :)

What a great trip Derek, the little guy will remember this for the rest of his life! I am in my mid 40s now and I can still vividly remember the hunting and fishing trips I used to take with my Pops back when I was a kid.
I'm pumped and ready. A friend mine got me hooked on VGG 2 years ago and wait every Friday for the newest episode. Thanks Derek and family
You can’t really flip airline tickets
Since when is he known as little grip??
@@my95buick He's got his own channel, Little Grip Garage.
He (Derek's son Bentley) has his own youtueb channel called little grips garage. it's really good and you should definitely give it a watch
You are doing something that a lot of us would love to be doing enjoy yourself and have a safe trip especially with your son
Bentley is having the time of his life here. You’re a good man and father.
I still remember when I first met you at the FF. It was after the first race with viewers. I was working as volunteer medical stand by and You were leaving and stuck in traffic and came out to chat about the backup. I didn’t realize it was you because I only watched one video of yours now I watch everyone of them. Thanks for making great content.
Great job Derek. I big smiles on Bentley's face just warms my heart. You are making deposits in the best bank possible...memory bank. God Bless!
You are so right, memories are how we continue to live after life
You're a great dad. That little feller's gonna carry these memories with him until he's an old, old man!
Made 500 miles one time on a terminal transmission cause the replacement was free on the other end . Also had a kid with me- mind you he was 40 at the time but take my word for it , still a kid.
Man I would have gave anything to have memories like this with my old man.. Enjoy these moment kiddo.
I left my O’reilly job. I can now publicly post whatever I want. We really wanted to make the VGG caps part of our uniforms. Lol
Bentley's reaction to where you're staying was absolutely awesome! He's usually so quiet in your videos. Seeing him get so excited was so awesome!
That's a memory he'll never forget, great dad time right there.
makin me miss my daddy Derick.... thank you sir for being an example of how parenting is supposed to look
Respect to the kid for rockin the mullet. I rock one. Takes guts
The memories you and your boy will have from this trip just brings a huge smile to my face. I think I can speak for a lot of folk on here by saying one of the top reasons for being a VGG fan is watching how you get the whole family in on it. Look forward to day 2 of your trip. God bless you and your family Derek!
One on one road trip ! To see the smiles on both of your faces ! That was priceless!
Try and play your Dad some of his fondest music when you can, because they sometimes respond to the "old tunes" from their young days. It's only temporary, but it's a blessing if they respond.
Stay well, stay strong my friend!
@@walter2990 Thank you for the kind words. And you are right about the music. The memory care facility he live in sends up videos of him singing along to all the classic rock songs. Makes me smile everytime.
The recurring theme down below is how much Bentley will remember this, how great it is for him, how special you are, but I guess they don't know it, that you are really doing all this with your son for YOU! I'm thinking you get just as much out of it, if not more, than your son does.
You , Sir, improve my quality of life with yer vidjas, thanks so much.
Them be the kindest words I seen here yet!
Hey from the UK Derek....
Awesome video.....What fantastic memories you're making for you and the little Guy....You set the example for every Father to follow...Kudos to you.
Derek, you are a model for being a great dad, I have the feeling the little-guy will have a UA-cam channel of his own soon enough.
He does. It's called little grip garage.
Greatest roadtrip ever. Regardless of mechanical issues and hot weather, still you and Bentley on the open road.
Your little human is absolutely having himself the best time of his life because he gets to spend it with his dad and it really doesn’t matter what y’all do as long as he’s there with you. I’m 65 years old I lost my dad when I was very young I actually do not even remember anything about him just remember as much fun as he’s having and going to remember this forever hopefully which I know I’m right you will also enjoy and remember forever have a great trip darn shame that transmissions given you fits
Nothing more wholesome than a father and son spending time together working on cars. 👍👍
I remember moving to California in 63 or 64. My parents traveled route 66 from midstate Illinois all the way to California I would’ve been 11 years old. This is something Bradley will remember the rest of his life. You’re a great family man keep it up.
Takes me back to family vacations when I was a kid. I can remember going Baltimore,MD to Green Cove Springs Florida. I'd stay awake just to talk to my dad whole everyone else slept most of the. Those co-pilot memories are priceless.
I could watch this video multiple times just to relive those beautiful memories with Bentley. As Dads, it’s why we do what we do. 😊
The look on the kid face when he realized where they were at was ok priceless, it warm my heart
That smile was brighter than sunshine and sweeter than sugar he's the one. I think will carry on your love of cars your other boys are fabulous to. Awesome parents
Saturday morning Vice Grip has become a thing with me and my little Follette. Thanks for the great content as always.
I have been a member of the vintage car community for 37 years, and what you say is absolutely true. I have helped anyone when I could and other have helped me. It is part of what often renews my faith in the human race.
Derek, the wife and I really like your channel and have watched every episode. We especially love the fact that your content is appropriate for all ages. I also am a auto enthusiast . Don't want this to go too long just giving you a shout out. Thanks for being real!!!
You seen his Vice Grip Lodge Channel? Not my cup of chew spit but maybe it blows down your bib overalls like a cool evening breeze 🤷♂️
Your son will remember and cherish this trip forever
was fantastic to see you and Bentley having so much fun
That young man will remember this trip with his dad forever. Some day he'll be telling his grandkids about it. Thanks for sharing this trip with us.
Old alignments are best when doing the Old Mother Road. The freeway misses so much of the experience. The point is not just to make the distance, it's to discover old timey, small town, 'Murica! I had a blast following the oldest route I could find when I did it in 2015. Outstanding trip!

@@RustyZipper Exactly! Stuff like that really makes the trip so much more interesting.
More of this, Derek! You enjoying time with your son, just doing guy things. There is nothing more wholesome and a simple reminder that God is good.
I really appreciate you sharing the pure joy of your life with us.
Making memories with your son you just can't replace.
Adorable son. I miss the days when my kids were that age.
I love how you are taking Bentley on this trip, he will remember these thing's as he grows up, and can say my dad is the best dad in this world. Awesome that people were kind enough to offer their help, great car community. Bentley smiling at you, and also wanting cowboy bootz like you is cool. Give that little grip garage fella a hug from an old girl in michigan. GOD bless and keep you safe.
Derek the look on your boys face when you pulled up into Little Talladega was awesome. What great memories you are making and it's awesome that you will always have all these videos to look back to. Again thank you for letting us fans into your world.
What a gift to a child! Unforgettable experiences and close bond with his father. How many of us wished we had something remotely similar to this.
Derek doing everything right to a T, according to a "Great Dad" textbook.
THANK YOU for sharing thus trip
Derek, you are a good Dad. I never had that kind of relationship with my Dad. He had a good heart and I guess that was enough.
That boy is having a blast great memories right there driving route 66 is on my bucket list
Great times with your son are priceless, you are a good dad!
This has been a rough week I tell ya what, but when Vice Grip uploads it all goes away. Keep up the great work. And keep that little feller of yours safe, he’s a special one
You hang in there my friend, the weekend is here, enjoy it!
@@RustyZipperThank you, and I think I will. Got plans to sit on the boat with a wobble pop and fish until I can’t no more.
@@perryturpin766 - just don’t fall in and drown 🍻
I think a lot of us were watching the last few minutes through the eyes of our former ten year old self. You're a good dad.
My dad and I were like you two. I had the best childhood ever ! Very very fortunate.
You are the man Derek. The memories you’re building with Bentley on this trip alone are worth a lifetime. Be safe and enjoy each minute of your journey.
The trips with your boys will be your best memories.
My last rode trip I made with my son was taking him to his first duty station at Fort Leninworh Kansas.
His graduation present was a 1972 Buick skylark.
I have the original bumper jack and hub caps in my shed every time I look at them I SMILE.
Enjoy all these times they grow up to fast.
Very cool. Bentley's definitely got the bug to be turning wrenches so I'm glad he got to go with the old man. He'll be telling his grandkids about it in 50-60 years and I'll bet his smile still lights up the same when he tells the story then.
Proud to say Vice Grip lives in my neck of the woods! Welcome to our county!
Derek you live for your kids, great job!
Brings a tear to my eye my dad passed away due to cancer about 2 years ago and one of the last thing we did was we went to the Porsche 922 unveiling at road Atlanta and did a ride along one of my favorite memories and I know he'll have amazing memories of this entire trip! Excited to see more videos!
Sorry for your lost
Youve gotta go down as the best dad in this century. god bless you and yours brother !
Derek you are a hell of a dad. Bentley is a great kid and you have done a great job raising him with jess. Your road trip with the lil human will be something he never forgets. Both your smiles are ear to ear. So cool. Keep it going and keep the rubber down
Derek you rock- a feller wish he had the resources for a father son trip like this- your son loves you
Best dad a kid could ever have no questions asked!!! 😊 🤗 got some lucky kids!!!!
You are a good family man. I love that you include your son in your adventures. Hope the rest of the trip was smoother.
Maybe, the next time you come through here you'll have time to stop in brother. Myself and all the hot rod community appreciate what you're doing I can assure you! Keep up the great work and God Bless you! Ryan :)
Disney's Cars really did hit different after we did a Route 66 road trip! We did the Arizona section and it was honestly the most epic drive I've ever done. We plan on doing the rest of the mother road at some point ❤️
That’s a really cool comment. 💕
Love this video. Some father son time is always awesome! Keep up the fantastic work.
I have never watched a VGG or VGL video and been disappointed. Safe travels Derek.
Thank you
Im about to watch and i already know this will be epic.
