To be fair, Basil Fawlty is one of the greatest sitcom characters ever, maybe the best, so any adaptation is going to be a real challenge. Cleese plays him so intense, even clownish sometimes with the physical stuff, yet he also feels very real. That's very hard to pull off.
I'm one of the very few who really didn't care for it. I didn't find he was realistic at all, it was basically the same as watching Gilligans Island or Three's Company. He was pretty much a cartoon character, who have you EVER met with that kind of manic energy? The abrasive personality maybe, but that abrasive is rare, Cleese himself said that it was a fluke to meet this ACTUAL man who clearly was almost 'one of a kind'. But there was no mention that he was physical like that.
They must have just liked the Inn idea, Newhart pulled it off later, but only with a LOT of side characters and guests who really saved the plot. This looks like its way too insular, but you have to give Bea Aurthur credit, as she said, she certainly was fearless. Ironic that both her and Betty White took a shot at the show.

@@mikearchibald744 I haven't really met anyone like that, no, but it still feels believable enough to me, I think because of the way Cleese portrays the stress and tension building within the character. People in England really do get this worked up about social class. Ok, no one is really likely to curb up and start hopping around, but it feels earned because Basil had an episode of defeat and humiliation to get to that point.
One character who does feel totally real is Mrs Richards, amazing performance, just the living personification of entitlement- the OG Karen really.

@@mankytoes Well, thats how ALL caricature succeeds. Its an overblown reaction that we can find some familiarity with at root. He's certianly a caricature, which is what I find so unfunny. The manuel character I just find cringing and embarassing.
To the point below, americans can certainly do it as well. Cleese is great as a caricature, but people forget that there are just as many horrific british sitcoms as american ones. I've seen ones that are just out and out bizarre. Even most brits now proclaim the US as the sitcome champion, the airwaves are full of them now.

1:46 I imagine that's because they used a live audience like fawlty towers, this means the scripts doesn't have pauses in to wait for the added in laughter. So it's up to the discretion of the actors when or if they have to pause, depending on the audiences reaction. Making it much more free flowing, feeling less intrusive and even adding to the experience.

_Fawlty Towers_ is too British to be adapted to the US...it relies on the extant class system, English reticence and the tortured (passive aggressive, frustrated) masculinity of Basil - it's quite subtle and tragi-comic.
Also, Britain in the 1970s was remarkable in and of itself due to the general feeling of malaise and decline...everything seemed to be getting crappier, and it bled into everything.
I try to tell people this all the time. Adaptations from the UK to the US don't work unless they are so different from the original that the viewer doesn't know they are a remake or they haven't seen the original UK show. That's why Norman Lear's shows worked. So few Americans at the time had seen the original UK shows that it worked.
@do br that's not why Only fools is loved . Same way why Friends is loved by many. The only thing that is overrated is Monty Python and Friends.
Tbf, 1970s American culture also experienced a frustrated societal decline. It's just that Americans used snark and the UK used wit. Lots of overlapping, but execution is what differs.
Bea Arthur as the Central character. I am genuinely interested to see how a Female Basil Fawlty would have been done. Open mind for me.
John Cleese just has that sarcastic voice that makes you cry laughing and makes you curl up in cringe at the same time 😂

Wouldn't have worked for the same reason their versions of Fawlty Towers didn't, it relies on a defined class system being part of the cultural background. Hyacinth is born working class, became middle class and had pretentions of upper class and this is very much a foundation of her character.

@@Googaliemoogalie the class system in Britain wasn't dictated by finances but by breeding and in fact there were many very rich people in the middle class (business owners etc) who would always be consider middle class even compared to a bankrupt upper-class individual. America has been more or a meritocracy based on financial position, sure withing that financial class system there would be people who hold on to additional distinctions but after a couple of generations they were pretty indivisible.
The class system in the UK has very much been lost for the most part but there are still remnants of it about.

I heard once that the aristocratic families that can trace their lineage back to William the Conqueror, etc, regard the Royal Family as being rather middle class, where most people, whether they like them or not, would regard the Royals as the very top of the class system.

If any actor aside from John Cleese can capture Basil Fawlty, Bea Arthur has to be up there to be fair. She had impeccable comic timing and a dry wit.
Thank you for this of course. I have not seen the American version here before, so well done too. I remember Bea Arthur in The Golden Girls series, which used to be shown at one time on Channel 4 here in Britain/the UK on a Friday night at 10.00pm if I remember rightly. Other than that, I agree with you fully so then too.

I just realized I have to rewatch this show.
Bea Arthur was definitely a good pick to lead a US Fawtly Towers. In fact, I struggle to think of anyone, even any male actors, who could do a better job. It's just a shame the scripts weren't up to scratch. I feel like in another universe, we might have had a really iconic piece of television here.
If threes company didn't exist then John Ritter could do it. John Lithgow was almost the same character on Third rock from the sun. Jim Carrey comes to mind, but physical comedians really are rare.
Get rid of the card board cut of a son and his airhead of a wife and put in Don Rickles as female Sybil.
Side note. The above is my usual crack about this remake but now that I've thought about it, it would make sense to split Basil into two here since Amanda is all snark and no fumes. Yes I know sarcasm is Arthur's forte but you just get a kick out of seeing people who are so sure of themselves like Basil go to pieces and have their true lowly selves betray the more presentable personality they pretend to poses in order to get their way.

Joan Sanderson, a wonderful actress with a long and varied career, stage, screen, TV. Remembered for this one character. But my goodness didn't she play it so fantastically well! The manager's a Mr. C. K, Watt aged 40!😂😂😂😂😂
Payne is the only adaptation ive actually watched so Im waiting to see your analysis on that one, Its kind of ironic Cleese was aghast at Amanda's writing the Basil character out cos it's probably the best adaptation in terms of actually trying to do something new and Bea Arthur couldve easily been a female Basil she had the sarcastic gravitas to pull it off so its a shame the material still didnt come close enough to the mark. This is the trouble with Americans though, they treat comedy like drama. Ironic that both the first two adaptations feature Golden Girls when that sitcom became so popular later on in the decade.
Yes, that's true about the Golden Girls' actresses. Then again, the UK remake of the Golden Girls is one of the few failures going from the US to the UK. Brighton Belles was awful.

Americans treat comedy like drama, the UK treats it like tragedy. That's why they both work in their own sphere, and why they rarely cross over.
@@unclenogbad1509 I guess so, its mainly cultural though, Im Australian and we had a comedy called Kath and Kim about two lower class Australians and it was a send up of urban Aussie culture, the Americans tried to do their version of that too and failed because how can you do an American comedy about quintessentially Aussie culture? They dont understand cultural difference. You cant just translate one culture to another the world doesnt work like that.

Speaking generally, it's a ripe theme for comedy - we've had sitcoms in a similar genre, but I don't think a direct adaptation would work - the UK characters would have be delusional, which K&K so aren't. Well, maybe Kim a bit. So, there was a US version? Ho hum.
Bea Arthur and Harvey Corman are both very funny people. But they're not John Cleese. Still, remembering seeing a few episodes back then, and watching this video, "Amanda" could have a few seasons with the right scripts. But it would be one of those comedies that entertained audiences, then was completely forgotten about.
I would agree to say Amanda's is better than the first attempt. Although I don't want to see another remake. Some things are meant to be left as packages of magic and not meant to be remade.
The Americans love making watered down, unfunny versions of British comedies, and that includes the American version of The Office.
Why we other try to copy each other’s sitcoms is baffling - it’s not like the US can’t do sitcoms! The Golden Girls is one of the very best sitcoms ever made - the British tried a remake and it was diabolical!

@@johnfairweather9188 Carell is over the top? I'd say he's louder, sure, but he has some great small acting moments in the US Office. I hate Gervais (as a person/comedian/writer etc.) so I'm obviously bias but even I'd say they're both on the same level. Different characters but I think they're both great performances.

Might as well compare 2001 A Space Odyssey to Cyril and Madge's 8mm film of a day on Skegness Beach. Even by copying lines from Fawlty Towers almost word for word they have made it about as funny as an aeroplane crash.
Looking forward to seeing part 3 with Payne. John Laroquette is a genuinely great comedic actor who could have made an American adaptation of Basil interesting. You should check out episodes of his The John Laroquette Show, especially the quite dark first season.
In my view the only American adaption of a British Comedy that worked was All in the Family ( Till Death Us Do Part the British one) - Reason was they adapted it to a US Audience which was also reflected in the scripts- Didn't copy the British version's scripts as they did for the various American versions of Fawlty Towers (i.e Snavely for instance) - The Comedy and Humour is lost in translation. You can use the concept but need to adapt it to the country that's it's made in. Australia had a version of Till Death Us Do Part called Kingswood Country which was adapted to and for an Australian Audience.
Tony Rosato who played Aldo really was from Toronto. He was in SCTV in the early years.

Arguably, _Newhart_ was the show that finally nailed the translation but an American _Fawlty Towers_ starring Bea Arthur was an inspired concept.

I would like to see a video of American adaptations of British shows that worked and explore why they worked when so many others have failed. The two examples that come to mind are Three's Company and the Office. There may be others, but those are the only two I can think of.

Why is the quality notably worse? Is it because in the UK we had PAL and the US had SECAM? Weird really because if you look back at the greats of the 60s and 70s the image quality was actually better than the 80s and 90s but is that because they wanted to market HD as something new when it already existed just nobody knew it did?
USA used NTSC and looksd like crap. PAL for the win in RGB SCART and no HD didn't come out till about 1993 in Japan but was very expensive and not the mainstream stuff till about 2006 with the PS3 Blue Ray and Sony Bravia TVs

Sometime in the future, after you've finished with part three, I would be interested to see you tackle All in the Family/Till Death Do Us Part. Alf Garnett never really got any airplay in the states, and I don't know if Archie Bunker ever went to the other side of the pond, but I'd be curious to get a Brit's perspective on the differences between the two.
Archie Bunker and Alf Garnet are reasonably similar characters and address similar issues. The cultural references may differ but that's superficial.
We never got more than a few episodes of All in the Family. It struck me that whereas Alf was a towering portrait of a hypocritical 'queen-and-country' bigot, Archie was merely shown as 'misguided'. Almost as though you couldn't have such a thing as a 'bad' American, just a mistaken one. Warren Mitchell, who played Alf, was a committed, Labour Party, Jewish Cockney who relished playing the worst of the 'working-class Tory' trope, a real thing which he hated and threw every bit of vindictive into portraying. I couldn't see anything of the same in Archie, though the actor playing him was clearly really good.
Also, the other obvious difference was Elsie, Alf's wife. In the American version, she seemed a bit simple, and a meek victim of his abuse. Elsie, played by the brilliant Dandy Nichols, was a strong woman who could cut Alf down with a single line. A whole scene would consist of Alf's daughter and son-in-law (the 'Randy Scouse Git of Monkees fame) arguing rightly but completely failing to break Alf's total self-obsession, and then Elsie, with just that single line, could bring him crashing to the ground.
Come to think of it, I don't even remember much about the daughter and son-in-law in 'Family'. I guess the biggest thing missing, as with a lot of US TV in general, is the class element. The Garnets were a working-class family in the East End of London, down by the docks. It was written by a working-class writer, Johnny Speight, and played by working-class actors, so had that feel of grittiness. I feel US TV even today isn't prepared to face the idea of a class divide in the way that UK TV finds so natural. I would actually welcome you to come back on this point, please.
My favourite ever US sitcom is 'Married With Children', which I've always thought is a brilliant evisceration of the American Dream. Again, your comments, please. Love from the UK.

Referring to Edith Bunker as a "simple and meek victim" (in my opinion) fundamentally misrepresents her character. Archie was a racist piece of shit, yes, true. But Edith was the woman who met him when they were both young and optimistic. She forever remembers him as a man full of hopes and dreams and the man who loves her for who she is. Her character, and her devoted love for him, humanizes him and reminds us that he's not just a cartoon character.
I've only seen a few episodes of Till Death Do Us Part, but when I saw how cynical and miserable Else was, I couldn't help but think to myself, "Why should I give a fuck about Alf Garnett?"

Similarly with Else - after a while you'd realise she's not miserable, just very patient and able to put up with him (Alf). She's too old-fashioned to leave him, but given any chance, she'll land him on his pompous arse and be off out to have fun. Ultimately, she knows he needs her far more than she needs him
@@nickstadler1906 Sorry to post again but, damn you, you've set me thinking now. 'Til Death was very working class, as I said. Did the same thing come across in 'Family'?
In the UK, we're still very conscious of class, and it shows in this series. For instance, as East End workers they were poor, and shown as such, living in a cramped terrace house with an outside lavatory. In the 60's, working lives were improving rapidly, but there was still nothing unusual about a young married couple stuck living with their parents/in-laws while working up towards their own place.
And while Alf was a bigot, with racial themes tackled across the series, the main dynamic was between Alf's old imperialist attitudes and the young, progressive, Labour-supporting Rita and Mike. Mike being from Liverpool also adds an extra, rival cities, dimension (though only because Tony Booth was Scouse - did you know he was actually father-in-law to Prime Minister Tony Blair? He was Labour enough to be slightly ashamed).
Occurs to me you may need a quick explanation. Labour is (or was) the political party of the working classes, set up and started by Trades Unions and socialists. In the 60's, this party was very progressive and quite left wing, hence Rita and Mike (and writer Johnny Speight) were all for them. The Tories (ie, the Conservative Party) are very much the party of the bosses: rich, patrician, but able to project an idea that we're better off with them running the economy.
Alf is a portrait of the 'working-class Tory', obedient to his lords and masters, distrustful of anyone of his own class that 'makes good' (which he's incapable of) and believing in the 'good old days' of the British Empire. He simply can't change, and that's the one tiny bit of sympathy that makes his character tolerable - something Warren Mitchell knew and brilliantly recognised.
Sorry if I've rambled a bit here, but once you start my brain going, you've only got yourself to blame. Hope at least some of this helps.

Sort of. After Bea Arthur left the show the other three went into the spin off The Golden Palace where they bought a hotel. At least one episode borrowed a plot from Fawlty Towers.

"The Golden Palace" was a spin off of the Golden Girls minus Bea Arthur where the other three bought a hotel in Miami. Some of the plots "borrowed" from Fawlty Towers.
Unfortunately it's not worth remembering.

Bea Arthur is possibly the only person who could get even close to the acting of John Cleese in such a role in the US. I don't understand why they rewrote the Mr. Leeman character, who died in the original version, to not actually be dead in the remake. I ask because, even for American TV, it seems unnecessarily and just plain overly complicated to have the man both trying to be kidnapped and killed while merely being unconscious while being carried around like a rag doll, so to speak. The "collective confusion" confusion actually makes sense to an American audience along with the "believe what you see" thing to the exclusion of all else. The "stupid daughter in law with vicious mother in law" thing is an American thing also. The chef is Southern, which is why he talks so much in that role. A male chef, especially in that time period, was one of the occupations where you assume he had to be gay. Talking a lot was, as I remember being told, a sign of that since a "real man" was silent and just stood there and "looked strong" in the US. I think one of the problems, that you kind of point out, with Bea Arthur's Amanda is that she would have been too much like Maude if she'd been as deep a character, but in the opposite direction. That kind of cognitive dissonance to fans of Maude might have been thought of as a problem. Amanda is a woman in the 1970s, which is why she's like she is in the show. It's hard to explain to a non-US viewer as the US was fighting hard against a lot of social change even then. She has all of the frustration of Basil, but probably none of the sexual repression that is internalized. Very few American actors, to this day even, could live up to the Mrs. Richards performance except maybe Bea Arthur herself if given half a chance. There just aren't that many truly acerbic American actors like her who can be cruel and crazy at the same time the way Basil Faulty can as a character through John Cleese. Americans tend to laugh at cruelty when it's supposed to be comedic. It's just not doable to make a good US remake of a UK show unless you're Norman Lear, but in that case, the remakes are only knowable as remakes if you are an American, in this case, who has actually seen the originals.
Of course, a French Canadian from Toronto is a bit of a contradiction. It's more Chinese than French...

I want to see the version where Bea Arthur's Basil is married to Betty White's Sybil. And where Basil's Italian mother and her sex mad Southern friend come to visit.
It's called the Golden Palace and it was terrible but just like in this instance Arthur had some great zingers.

@@spews1973 The only part of that I can remember is when they did their version of "The Kipper and the Corpse". Sophia got tearful as moving a dead body around in the middle of the night made her fondly remember her childhood in Sicily.

Why on earth would America feel the need to re-make Fawlty Towers? Are American audiences really so insular that they cannot watch anything other than purely American content. Or is it just so that whereas the British series ended the American series can go on and on and on.
From these clips Bea Arthur comes across as bitter and mean for no reason. Basil Fawlty was desperate to be seen as upper crust which made his contained rage at the missteps in his hotel all the more uproarious. Bea Arthur seems to be angry at old age. Basil Fawlty seems angry at God!

The French-Canadian population here is tiny. He should be from some place in Quebec or possibly New Brunswick.

What failed in Arthur’s Amanda (if it were to emulate Basil) was the mania exhibited by Fawlty. Something the all too rigid Arthur could never do. Biting sarcasm could only go so far.

Every single sentence you narrate has an affected falling inflection on the final word, every single one. Utterly bizarre.
