    A lot of playing.
    A lot of testing.
A lot of researching meta developments and competitors.
A lot of playing into the Imperm column.

i recently taught my friend how to play yugioh, keep in mind ive been playing since 2001-2002 minus the 4-5 years pendulum era. And i did a test where i told him if i had a nibiru or veiler or ash or imperm and he would play accordingly and win. he won 5 games in a row of me doing that then i told him now he understands how to play with those things in mind and we played 5 more duels without me saying a word and he lost all 5. He would summon more than 5 times or wouldnt try to ash bait me. But when he knew i had the cards he always played correctly. Then i noticed him starting to try and bait me and said good job i see what youre trying to do but i know if i let the dark hole effect resolve it will actually hurt you more than me in the long run which is why i wont negate or respond to it. He's learning quick tbh im proud of him. he beats me alot now and he's only been playing a few months.

@@michaelmorales1602 I am not the original comment writer, but I still have a tip I could recommend, since it worked for a friend of mine.
When I teach someone the game I mosttly use Decks with only one extra deck mechanic and which are based on there core gameplan interactive. (dumb e.g. Sky Striker). For the first few games I would also not introduce handtraps just the basic spells, traps and monster mechanics so the new plaer can get a hold of the basic rules and concepts. after a while add some handtraps, not alle but the most known.
Then after some more games add an Extra Deck Mechanic and so on ...

@@michaelmorales1602 I covered the basics, showed him the play matt, monsters spells and traps then turn phases, spell speeds, conditions, terminology (send, destroy, banish, shuffle) and he did the rest. I also explained how fusions rituals xyzs and links worked and he ended up learning supreme king pendulum all on his own and taught me how pendulums function. I also set him up on YGO Omega to practice against bots. Few months later he has mastered several decks and learned to play against all 20 of my decks. The best advice is go easy on him so he wants to learn. Throw games if you have to if you see him get frustrated. I've thrown a few games and I'm pretty sure that made him happy enough to continue playing and learning without me. Now he's equally as good as I am it just comes down to the decks we play.

@@michaelmorales1602 dang i typed an entire paragraph and it didnt post. i showed him the basics, play matt layout, card types, turns and phases, spell speeds and timing, conditions, yugioh terms like destroy, send, banish, shuffle ect. taught him tribute summoning and only 1 normal summon per turn which is why we want to special alot. Oh the big thing was getting him on a simulator to practice against bots and me. EDOPRO and YGO Omega. He caught on from there. Even learned Supreme King as his first deck and taught me all about pendulums lol. Yup he summoned every type of extra deck monster in one turn and i knew he was good to go. Most importantly, try and teach him as you play, its just a game at the end of the day it doesn't need to be so serious we dont always need to win.😅 Patience, Encouragement and letting them feel good when they break your board. Always acknowledge when they make a good play and offer helpful tips on how they could play generic scenarios differently in the future.

One of my favorites was during a big 100 man tournament at my locals. It was my first big tournament and it was a format where Dino rabbit just came out in the tins and mermail just came out in abyss rising. I made it all the way to the finals 2-0ing every Dino rabbit player and I played watts. No one saw the deck coming and no one knew what the cards did or how they interacted. Notably my watt dragonfly getting solemn warninged not know I'd still get the summon off. I ended up losing in the finals to mermail 1-2 but its a moment I'll never forget as a young player.

One of my favourite mental games ever was during tearishizu format, vs Floondereeze. In that format I was reluctant to play tear so, I went the fun route of playing crystal beast. I know, just good old Necrovalley-shifter.dek. Anyways, in the match against floo, I always tried to make them known that I also played shifter on main, either by activating it or revealing him with prosperity. After that, basically all floo players side them out so I can put Droll and lock bird in, giving me safe access to the most broken handtrap vs that deck

i had a game recently where my friend set cards to bluff me but after he didn't imperm me after the obvious targets, it became clear he had nothing since i knew his last card in hand. if he had set one less card, I would've actually been worried about Nib, the one card that could do a lot in that board state. It was interesting to reflect on the way you can also mix your bluffs together by setting cards and also not setting cards.

Lilith Lady Of Lament is a really funny one to mind game with. It's less relevant now but when the deck was more relevant, you could grab 2 of a single name trap and a stray trap, you can have them add the advantageous trap instead. Especially with more rouge traps like Ballista Squad being added next to say Imperm and some players just see scary trap and just choose the other one thinking it'll either benefit you less or that you're working at a loss versus you wanting them to choose the "Bad Card".

Old school player here. I was once bamboozled by the old way of game losses due to time rulings. If you'd like to read about it there is an article, before games were streamed, on metagame site it's David Bustillos vs Jerry Wang. Jerry beat me by stalling and was able to get away with it. It was pretty messed up at the time. He was a cool dude and we got along afterwards but dang at the time I was so upset with him for stalling and the judges not giving him a loss. Oh and this was a SJC Championship, before YCS was a thing. I've always wanted to tell someone my story.

Even when I'm focused on using Board Breakers, I STILL run Infinite Impermanence to throw people off guard, who might think after deleting their monsters with board wipes I'm just setting something like a Forbidden Droplet, Contain or Widow Anchor to hit a monster with, and then get their backrow negated simultaneously unexpectedly. Not to mention running Imperm to snipe their going first plays might make people think I'm on other hand traps and encourage them to play around those, leaving openings in other directions.
It's basically like how Grapplers in Fighting games have to try to lead their opponents into a habit of "respecting" their Strikes with excessive blocking in order to ever pull off a Command Grab(though I'm more a fan of Zoning despite the huge stigma towards "Keep Away" in those games rivaled ONLY by Command Grab spamming, though good Zoning requires mastery of the Midrange as WELL as those edging pokes).

You should because if they have it and make right play it didn't matter regardless. At high level playing this should be happening. If the player is bad bluffing in ygo is pointless because unless they open "have it" you are more likely to out play them

@@tristianmeganblagoueakajay9174 yeah but you will play with “no fear” and now you will get stopped and lose completely instead of being smart, playing a little more conservative, and if they do “have it” you will still have a chance to win becuase you didn’t over commit.

Would the Labrynth player use Big Welcome before Back Jack if he had a valuable trap though? If Cameron thinks back to that moment in his head he probably lets the Back Jack go through.
Still, it was pretty much the only way for Zhou to win the duel, he has to hope that Cam forgets or doesn't think about that, so cool observation.

@cyberjake2020 , because if you have to negate your opponent's monster effect from anywhere before having a Dinomorphia card face-up on the field, so the Dinomorphia Intact can activate for the same purpose, that's the best card available. Also, it depletes your life points faster, which is convenient in that strategy. Lastly, in case you have your life points lower than 1,500, you can summon Dinomorphia Stealthbergia to avoid paying life points for the effects that require them.

I think a lot of players fall into a “Locals” paradigm where their mindset towards playing is usually based around games with familiar, friendly faces. So when a bigger competition comes up, even with a mentality of wanting to win, players look across the table and see someone they don’t think they have to play other than straightforwardly.

  • @michaelmorales1602

I keep winning matches vs YCS-topping competitors by using Nibiru as a bluff.
I go into each game with a growth mentality. Win or lose, I'm going to gain something out of this. One thing that I've been practicing is recognizing where best to Nibiru my opponents, even if it's not currently in my deck. I do this to know for the future where the optimal choke points would be in a given line had I opened with Nib. This oftentimes makes people think I have Nibiru, when in fact I'm just theorycrafting in the middle of a match lmao. In one event, I resolved Nibiru in game 2 of the first round against one of the best players in my state, with a lot of people watching. That Nibiru ended his turn and I went on to throw because I didn't realize we were out of time, so the match ended in a draw (I could've just gone to BP at any time to swing in for enough damage to take back the lead).
A few rounds later, I go against another good player and take game 1 easily bc he bricked and I was able to push through all his hand traps. In game 2, he opens with both Bonfire and WANTED, so he basically has full gas. I don't open Nib, but I stop him a few times to consider if I should drop it at a certain spot if I did open with Nib. My opponent sees this as a sign that I DID open Nib, so he promptly makes a 4-material Apollousa and ends on that. This catches me off guard and I try my best to hold back a smile, because I had the Change of Heart that I sided in hand, so that game was a complete wash bc of Schrodinger's Nibiru giving me a free Apo to work with xD
In the last round of swiss (this was a $250 prize card tourney with a cut to top 4), I'm still undefeated, and the only other undefeated is probably the 2nd best player in the state, and a guy I've been wanting to beat for awhile. Game 3 starts and I go first, opening an unplayable hand. I didn't side in the Nibs bc I like to have full gas when going first, and Crystal Beasts are very prone to bricks. I set Bridge of Salvation and pass. My opponent plays cautiously because I still have 4 unknowns in hand after he Knightmare Phoenixs away my Salvation, so he ends on Apo and hits me for half my LP, which means I survive. And since he sent Salvation to the grave for me, I used it in EP to search for a Pegasus, guaranteeing that I'd have plays going into turn 3. For turn, I draw Golden Rule. I get Drolled after my first search, so I'm able to Triple Talents Take Apo without having to use up one of her negates. Since I drew the Golden Rule, I was able to OTK under Droll without worrying about any hand traps.
So essentially, I resolved ONE Nibiru in the first match, and that helped me go undefeated for 6 rounds because everyone was scared of my Nibs (that I don't main deck) xD

Example: I was playing against floo at locals and he is on 4 summons with a normal summon remaining, an empen and little bird on the field. I have one card in hand and it’s nib. I ask if that is all 4 little bird effects and we look together and count that he has only used 3/4. So I say with a frown, oh, so you haven’t used eglen and you have a normal summon left? He smiles and says normal summon eglen. Then I smile and reveal nib. 😎

I think the one possible problem with this logic is that he was willing to shuffle his deck when he activated big welcome, so in my head I would think he either feel safe because he has nibiru in hand to shuffle away the karma cannon or he has nothing on top of his deck and let the back jack resolve. Because if he has no more interaction in hand why would he be willing to shuffle it away

It's rare because yugioh is more math and variance than skill. Technically, everything is, even chess, but it is much harder to simplify this. Chess is all math and it is a lot of match but you can never know all math matical situations for which scenario will matter. At least, realistically, as with Yugioh, you actually can. I think playing around have it is most probable. However, if your deck can afford to not do so, then your deck (much like full power D link) actually can afford to play around everything. No deck ever has this ability. Even tier 0 ones. Only one I can think of is D link. It could play around everything except Lancea. Which given whatever hand beats lancea would also beat droll + nibiru 78 percent of the time. The math on that in a game three may as well be 90 percent. Basically, these moments are rare and luck based. You played around nothing and were already completely winning or you played around the right card an won. I can not award anything to myself here as by doing so I played in to something else I should also loose to. The only way to have pride in this scenario is to create a deck that plays around everything and no mid range or control deck could ever do this, only a combo deck can.

So because a good player playing a better deck will always play around you better have it 94 percent of the time you will loose anyways. Also I agree had he held imperm maybe his value is greater later and it makes your opponent wonder what is set. However in this scenario we allow the snake eyes ash to play out meaning my opponent uses less resources to do the same thing and can also make Phoenix to call my bluff. If it a torrential. If it a book of eclipse. If it a warning. I will always take my one card combo as far as I can to force you to reveal the card if you do not I now know you are protecting the card then I remove it or force it and still deal with the board the same because you allowed me to run my one card combo down to oak

Also your theory on is the cat alive or dead does work however not when you have 2 traps and a normal summon this works best with floodgates decks. And older yugioh. As now a days floodgates just win regardless and generally are flipped on simple summons and not a skillful scenario

Ugh, Schrodinger's whole point with the thought experiment is that it is completely ridiculous to believe that something could be in mutually exclusive states at the same time. The Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum physics (the prevailing view that takes the thought experiment seriously) has gotten us basically nowhere in the last 100 years.
Thank you, Yugioh players, for coming to my TED Talk.

I literally said this on stream. I'm paraphrasing but something like "Why would he use Nib there? The Snake-Eye player has game on board through that. I'm pretty sure you just hold it and hope they negate Back Jack".

Do you really play around everything though? Don't you guess which cards hurt you the most and just play around them and hope for the best with the others?

My story would be that once at locals, I was against this one girl playing Marincess and I was on Tearlaments. We were going into time in game 3 and she normal summoned a monster and time was called. She asked if we just tied then. I asked if she was going to use her monster's effect before she ended the main phase. She said she didn't see any point because we had the same life points. And I asked her again to clarify if she wanted to end the phase or activate any effects. I got in her head and she pondered, thinking I maybe had something if she left an open field. So she proceeded to do some searches and try to add disruption to her board...I then chained Tearlaments Havnis and proceeded to mill my copy of Agido, which lead to milling Volcanic Scattershot which burned her for damage in time and I won the match!
I made sure not to lead her into activating an effect, but I put it in her head to do so. That was a next level play I had thought!

"Bluffing is forgotten" not forgotten but this is suppose to be about plays, if you want to bluff go play poker.

    • @Geo-ok1nw
      @Geo-ok1nw 7 місяців тому

This is wrong. Bluffing is 100% part of the game. Not lying, not trying to persuade your opponent “did you summon 5 yet?” That’s cheating.
      Bluffing tho is 100% valid

    • @TuckNeal

@@Geo-ok1nw If you are just setting a card or something to bluff then fine, but when you almost fully set a card then pick it up then do the same thing before finally and a lot of the "Bluffs" i see are just excuses to burn time, like you dont need to check my graveyard 4 times when i only have 2 cards in it, you shouldnt be asking me life points on the 2nd turn of the duel when no LP cards have been played
"Bluffing operates specifically through misrepresentation" misrepresenting the game is a penalty.
If you dont have nibiru and after i make my 5th summon you say "Thinking" but dont have a legal action but pretend you do, thats a misrepresentation.
Just play the game, i hate when people have to resort to using outside tactics like bluffing and stuff like that to me its just being a scummy player. if you have a card then activate it, if you dont then dont pretend you do
Now instead of making plays you are now trying to read your opponent and figure out if they are bluffing or not meanwhile the clock is burning, if tournaments had no round time limit then sure bluff all you want, but this isnt poker

We are talking about ycs. Cards are not a problem to these guys. Also not having cards make you solve problems you face by not having them and help you becoming good when you can afford them but still think outside of the box
