  • Question: I've been working on trailer loading with my 3-year-old gelding. I've done most of the fundamentals with him and followed the trailer loading video. I have a step-up trailer, so I made a step with a pallet and plywood as suggested. I've put his front feet on the pallet and in the trailer and backed him out dozens of times, but as soon as all four of his feet go in the trailer, he will not back out. He's been able to turn around and come out twice and he does so calmly, but I know it's better for him to back out. Please help - I don't know what I'm doing wrong here!

I purchased a 13 yr old Suffolk punch draft who had been allowed to turn around in a trailer all of his life. Well, I am stubborn enough that when I got home with him, I would not allow him to turn around. I tried and tried to back him out to no avail. So I tied him back up and shut the back door of the stock trailer. I then took my mare who was in the front section of that trailer out the side door and put her away. I then got back to work on the Suffolk. It took a long time to get him backed out. At the start, every little 'lean back' was rewarded with a release of pressure. Then a tiny step back was also rewarded that way. It was a lot of work for sure. It paid off and I got him out by him backing out. Big horse to be fighting this issue!
I learned a lot from Clinton Anderson. Wish he was my neighbor! (well, I think! ha.)

I would not even think about loading my a horse in the trailer if he doesn't back up just with a voice command on the ground
