I was a subscriber to your other channel. Just subscribed to your "new" one. I'm on the wrong side of 70, and started learning to play guitar about 5 years ago after I retired. You cannot possibly know how much you've helped me. In fact, if it wasn't for the internet, and UA-cam, and especially you, and people like you, on here, I wouldn't even have attempted to learn how to play guitar. I can't thank you enough. Cheers, mate! :)
for people who still dont know what JC is saying about the capo position. just tune to standard tuning and put your capo on 5th fret to play along with Buddy and James...you should be ok
Oh one other great comment is you have great T-shirts, great guitars and great attitude. It is a huge pleasure to watch and play along with you to learn these songs.
Wow, this video was posted six years ago! (I’m watching it for the first time in 2022). Based on my ability, I could never understand how a guitar player could power a rock and roll trio (e.g. Cream - I’m citing this example, and I apologize because I know that James isn’t a big fan of this group’s guitarist). After watching countless James James videos, I now understand how an amazingly skilled guitarist can be the driving force of a trio. James can play anything! James’s ear, timing, dexterity, musicality, and fearlessness put him on a level where he can hold his own with anybody - the best of the best! James makes it look effortless. I have nothing but respect and awe for your playing ability, and I have nothing but appreciation and gratefulness for the fact that you’ve taught us how to play thousands of songs! Wow, you’ve given us so much. What James has done is the equivalent of Bobby Orr or Sidney Crosby or a favourite athlete sharing all of their training secrets, and thereby giving us a glimpse into their greatness. James, I know that you like sports, and hopefully, you’ll appreciate the analogy. You’re the best! Thank you. Be well! Ted
I have to say that you are such a good teacher and I have always put the Capo on 5th Fret but you are right 4th Fret is better for easy access to the E chord and B 7. I've nearly got it so I'll be back. I have also learn't this song without the Capo but I prefer the capo with the reverb much better pitch.. Thanks to you my guitar journey in retirement is off to a much better start for songs. Keep it up.
Dude, you nailed that! And I agree... don't be afraid of the capo. I've heard it described as a "crutch" for those that can't play well. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most all the greats used one at one time or another. Chet, Jerry, Tony Rice, Glen Campbell... nuff said. Get a capo!
acting on your advice and beginning my journey to better guitar playing by learning Buddy Holly ( i think there are 10-15 songs that are considered classics songs), i am beginning here, thanks JJ
JJ - like so many of your videos, I watch it at first and say, "I'll never pick that up... too fast..." Then I slow it down with a metronome and nail it, and speed up the metronome gradually, and then say, "not that hard!" Thanks!
I just recorded my version of Buddy's song, with my capo on the 4th fret. Buddy had his on the 5th, but I found the fret dots confusing so I tuned the guitar down half a tone and capo'd the fourth fret. It's great to see I'm not the only Buddy Holly nut out there!
always used your PT channel for reference and now this one, sorry about those handful of negative dipsticks that made you decide to start this channel. Been playing years but because I only play for family sing songs , birthday parties , camping trips etc I never bothered with solos until this lesson came along it sounds so cool, you made it so clear thanks as always for the great lessons .
Great stuff -- I can probably play that. From the clip of his Sullivan Show appearance, it looks like Holly has his capo at 5, but tuning was an imprecise art in those days.
Love this. I love Buddy Holly and your shirt is really cool. It is a little hard to see but if you look closely at my profile you can see that I am wearing what I call, "my Holly glasses".
thanks a million -you have inspired me to get my Squier Strat out. But I'm puzzled: to play along I have to capo at 5 so you must be tuned half a step UP?
+Bill Clinzel This lesson - like nearly all my other ones - is really meant for people who can pick things up with minimal instruction. I play by ear and I try to teach others to do the same. I encourage players to take some time to explore the fretboard and do some trial and error. I don't really do detailed instruction, but there are plenty of other guys on UA-cam who do. My philosophy is a little different.
I didn't really think of it before I watched this video, but now I wanna learn how to play it. Also, I'm wondering how do you get such nice sound? I can hear the delay and there's also probably some reverb, but what makes it come out so 'jangly'? I don't know better word to describe it.
hey jesse james what is the tunning i didnt understand sorry my english is to bas thanks to you if you can help me just what did you do whit the tunning?
Natalie McPhee Yes, I'm aware of who and what Peggy Sue is. But I'll be honest with you: I feel like I'm pretty generous with my time as it is, so I don't really respond well to demands like "Do Peggy Sue". Regardless, check the privettricker channel for a Peggy Sue demo.
Jimmy Glover You don't need to know theory, just tune standard and clamp it somewhere and have fun with it. Do like James does and call the open chords just like you are full scale. A, E etc.
ChaotixPenguin My teacher didn't like capos -- cheating, he called it. That may have been good for teaching a kid to play barre chords, but I'm so happy to have a capo now. Make the investment.

M McCartney hope you're still playing mate
good to hear this man
for people who still dont know what JC is saying about the capo position. just tune to standard tuning and put your capo on 5th fret to play along with Buddy and James...you should be ok
great playing on this one. Strat sounds really good. Any rock n' roll lessons - Buddy, Carl Perkins, Elvis - are always appreciated.
Your guitars and t-shirts are fabulous ! .....And of course your lessons.
Oh one other great comment is you have great T-shirts, great guitars and great attitude. It is a huge pleasure to watch and play along with you to learn these songs.
wonderful song
Wow....this really made me smile. Love buddy holly

Love me some Buddy! Many thanks for your demo and instruction...I think even I can make this one happen!
What a great lesson. This helped tremendously thanks.!

Joseph Pieper But never the groom.
James James Hahahahahaha!!!!
Great lesson. Thanks
Hey! That's not the way Gary Bussey played it! Just kidding. Couldn't help myself. Glad I found your site.

Thanks a lot for taking your time to do this, it's really helpful.
I love your t-shirt. I have a similar but mine is black not white. Your strat looks like Buddy´s strat too. That´s nice!
so cool and again i meet buddy holly
Great playing! Love the shirt!

It wasn't just a handful. :)
well glad you ignored them, theres always the haters, it always amazes me the things people dislike on youtube
Nice lesson. Thanks JJ
Great lesson!
Great stuff -- I can probably play that. From the clip of his Sullivan Show appearance, it looks like Holly has his capo at 5, but tuning was an imprecise art in those days.
jrpipik It's still an imprecise art -- in my household. :)

Where did you get the t-shirt? I love it
Cool!
& since you're on this already, could you possibly try to do the Lead Guitar of "Words of Love"? Possibly the Beatles version? Thanks!
Oliver Oliver I'll try to get to that one, but there are a bunch of guys on UA-cam who do great versions of it already.
very good work well Done }
How does he get his whites so bright? Love the shirt. You should wear it more often. Love what you do.
Hi james great lesson mate
Nice!
Great stuff mate !
Nice.
I would assume that with the caple is how Buddy originally played the original recording
You seen the La's version , JJ?!
Stunning
Buddy Holly played it capoed so no shame in that (search for Ed Sullivan show appearance).
Ya kind sped through the opening lick explanation...are you htting the E&B strings open on that walkdown? Im lost

that's great better than the other version
Are you tuned different a half step as it’s usually a capo on the fifth fret ??
What do you use for the echo every pedal I've used doesn't get that echo sound
what did you do whit the E
rock, COMPTON !!!

@@fionn8057 yeah.
nice playing mate.
is this one the correct version? because both have diferent tones
I own a 1946 fender stratocaster
I doubt it.
Cool guitar too James come back ,😊
It's fine
hey jesse james what is the tunning i didnt understand sorry my english is to bas thanks to you if you can help me just what did you do whit the tunning?
+hansen james Just put the capo wherever it sounds close to being correct, and then tune your strings up or down accordingly. Tune by your ears.
Where did you get your shirt?
+Brian VanPortfleet I got it when I went to see that Buddy Holly musical/play. I honestly don't really like plays, but this one was fantastic.
Just wondering, do you still use your Daphne Blue Stratocaster?
Oliver Oliver I still have it, but it's never really been in heavy rotation.
Buddy would have approved.
He used the capo cuz he was a soprano. Nice man!!
amp settings?
is that a Koa wood body?
No.
what guitar are you using?
That's a regular USA-made Stratocaster.
Capo is supposed to be on the 5th
It was tuned a step down
By buddy holly

Rip
i think some beginners might prefer not to use a capo because they dont own one (including myslef)
ChaotixPenguin If you have a broccoli rubber band and a pencil, you have a capo... o/
Or like in my case I don't know the music theory behind using one. I mean I kinda do and kinda don't if that makes sense.
Jimmy Glover You don't need to know theory, just tune standard and clamp it somewhere and have fun with it. Do like James does and call the open chords just like you are full scale. A, E etc.

jrpipik believe me there is nothing more i want than to own a capo but im a sexy unemployed college student so its not in my near future.
Ok now you only need some glasses and you're good to go...
Do Peggy Sue
Natalie McPhee I hardly know her.
Where did you get that t shirt?
