Seems to get worse as I get older too, I used to be able to marathon the entire show in a few weeks, but now I have to take breaks between episodes sometimes to catch my breath. Sarah is so powerful. From plucky and hilariously funny to absolutely devastating and all the brilliance in-between. Adore Her. 💖💖💖💖💖

    I never got how Dawn thought that was Buffy's perfect reality. Yes, her mother was still alive, but Buffy was stuck in an institution because of severe mental problems for six years, apparently completely unresponsive. How does that qualify as "perfect"?

    • @RitsychServare
      @RitsychServare 6 років тому +2

      maybe she also felt that way too about her own reality that maybe she'd rather be THERE where her mother was still alive even though it's not a perfect one... she probably is also having a hard time finding that closure

    • @greenywasabi5530
      @greenywasabi5530 6 років тому +4

      I know this is a late reply but I believe she saw it as Buffy's perfect reality because not only is their mother still alive but it would mean everything was in Buffy's head, this means she can get better. Vampires and demons not being real means she would be able to fall in love, get married, have children and die of old age. In other words an average life. Unfortunately for Dawn she was a by-product of magic.

    • @TMThesaurus
      @TMThesaurus 5 років тому +2

      It doesn't really make sense, but it doesn't need to make sense. It's more about Dawn having the emotional maturity of, well, somebody her age.

      That scene gives weight to the idea that Buffy "The Vampire Slayer" is a false reality. In said reality, Buffy's group/friends/her sub-conscious wants to keep Buffy there for their own survival. If Buffy chooses the 'real' world (psych ward), Buffy's friends and family become none existent.

    I love this episode because of how much it ties together Buffy's self hatred. This season already did a lot of parallels between Buffy and Faith to emphasize how similar below the surface they are, but this episode really helps to highlight Buffy's despair of her life and reality and the shifting perception of her world - she started out damaged but okay, she surrounded herself with a group of people who look up to her and tell her how awesome she is. In an essence her playing the hero is no different than Faith indulging into playing the villain - different means, same ends. And then everything just went downhill again and again, she died, twice, she made mistakes, she encountered Faith and could not stand to see herself in her, she revealed her flaws to others...and in turn the world around her changed and the whole illusion she escaped to was shattered - even her friends, the people who used to look up to her, are slowly changing HOW they look at her the more human she lets herself to be and the more she sheds away a mask of happy infallible superhero. So she dove headfirst into an excuse of being wrong, being someone else, in order to act upon her self destructive impulses and bottled up emotions she could not let herself indulge in as superhero. And then Dead Things shatters that completely, which is a strong Faith parallel to This Years Girl. And this episode highlights that change in her life - her reality changed to being so harsh and cruel that an alternative of being a mentally ill patient in mental asylum seems better to her. In the end she chooses to stay within real world, however both Buffy and the viewers will never know what was the right choice and which place is more of a nightmare...

      @CarlosHuiskens 7 років тому +12

      Actually the illusion theory is mostly thrown out of the window considering this ''illusion'' continues even after she accepted the world she lived in as real and saved her friends. So parallel realities as mentioned above seems a more plausible theory. The main problem this episode faces is the fact that events continue after this episode. And certain events happen in this world without Buffy knowing about them which kinda throws out the idea that she makes it all up. This literally would have been a real mind fuck if the show just ended right then and there.
      It would have been like Inception where the user is left to interpret for itself whether or not the main character is still dreaming.

      Carlos Huiskens actually your first sentence is accurate but still not true. Yes she we went back to the asylum after she accepted sunnydale, but she still hadn't had the antidote... and if she needed the antidote to be cured completely, there's no reason to believe that she couldn't slip back into that illusion before drinking it, regardless of accepting her fate.

      It’s been years since that comment but I’ll point out a few clues;
      The doctor say’s that Buffy has been going in and out of her delusion to which her mother and father agree « we know about her condition » but if this was true then she would’ve had episode in and out of both reality before being to the asylum
      Another important detail is that most often when Buffy is dreaming or in an astral projection context she often see her mother and father. Like when Dawn gets kidnapped and is stuck in a loop where once again Joyce and Buffy’s father are present. To me they seem to always represent a mental barrier created when she is unable to cope with what is happening around her.

      you have to remember that dawn feels abandoned after joyce dies, and then everything that happens afterwards only adds to that feeling, from buffy dying, to buffy trying to kill herself again, to buffy and willow going out all the time and leaving dawn alone, etc.

    I always believed it was clearly stated by the last scene that the institution is real, since we usually never see it if Buffy isn't there. But she gets to choose to live in her imagination, because that's the point of the episode, that we can choose our reality. It fits with the philosophy of the show.

    I think you took this episode pretty well!
    I remember back when it aired, I was PISSED. Not because of the overall episode itself, which was really, really fascinating. It seemed to be this concept where - after being dead and in heaven and being forced to come back to a dark, scary, depressing world where violence still happens and her mother is dead - Buffy in this episode needed to finally re-accept the slayer life and all that comes with it and stand up and re-engage in that life again. That seemed really powerful to me. But... I felt it was ruined by the last scene, which seems to make it as if Buffy really is in an institution, all 6 years that we've been watching aren't real, and the choice she made to re-join that world in the end is pointless because she's actually in a hospital, still in her head. Which is why I was pissed off.
    I felt that final scene ruined any message of hope (that Buffy is finally choosing to re-engage in her life again, after coming back from the dead) that the episode seemed to be trying to present, as well as pretty much treated the show as if it really wasn't real and we were all stupid for believing it when "clearly" none of that would ever happen and it makes much more "sense" that Buffy's in an institution.
    I would have happily loved the episode IF it had stopped with her choosing to stand up and save her friends, proving that that world was the real one. But instead they left it on this note that said "oh we're so cute, messing with you the viewers, making you second guess everything you've been watching for the past 6 years," and that just pissed me off to no end.

    This is one I often forget about but love, because it puts our reality back into this world of demons. There are no super humans, just mental patients. Buffy is depressed here and was happy when she was dead, possibly because she was out of her own delusions. I think this episode is good food for thought.

    That episode must be one of the creepiest episodes of tv history because you don't know for sure if Buffy halluzinated or came actually back to her real life. Since this episodes there are two possibilities. On the one hand she fought against a deadly demon poison that tried to make her a killer but on the other hand she maybe lost the fight against a horrible desease that kept her in a dream world from which she will never awake again...

    small note on this episode: joss whedon intentionally left the ending open ended to let fans decide which reality was real. so as a fan you can entirely decide everything that happens in the show is the crazy imagination rambling of a psych patient.

  • @falselight
    @falselight 7 років тому +2

    You slightly misunderstood the ending, There's no "only one can live" or parallel dimensions.
    "Asylum buffy" didn't die, they just "lost" her mentally she chose the fake reality, that scene was meant to leave the audience guessing which reality was true.. very similar to the ending of Shutter Island.

      Stop

    • @falselight
      @falselight 7 років тому

      uhm, whatever you tried to say, as incoherent as it was, is wrong.
      It's not any sort of multi-verse or multi dimension or parallel buffys that are connected...
      It's one person..
      She's either a Slayer having delusions of being in an Asylum due to the poison,
      Or she's a mental patient having delusions of being a Slayer for the entire series.
      And the creators chose to put the last scene there to leave it open for the viewer to choose
      The creator confirmed this many times and has said this:
      "the episode is intentionally left open to interpretation; the actual cause of the delusions, either the poison or Buffy's return to "reality", is not made explicitly clear. "If the viewer wants," Whedon says, "the entire series takes place in the mind of a lunatic locked up somewhere in Los Angeles...""

    hey I like your analysis on that whole parallel universe theory 'cause there's always that fascinating idea that maybe none of that Vampire/Demon Slaying deal is even real and it's all in her head for many years... but she chose to stay with her friends who needed her the most. She couldn't find resolution with the death of her mother so I think this episode just gave her that chance and even the viewers that moment for Buffy to move on... or at least have one issue in her life somewhat resolved apart from the myriad of things that she's been through and struggling to overcome.

    I have a theory that it could be a memory from her past that has been manipulated by the Trio, into thinking she has been in that institute for 6 years, when really it was indeed less. Also, going back to manipulation, there are three people in that room with her inside the institute. So what if the trio represent both The Doctor & Buffys parents and its Warren pretending to be the doctor, Johnathan pretending to be Joyce and Andrew pretending to be her dad?? So, in other words, they were/are real, only the institute is a memory from her past, that has been re-imagined by the hallcination & demon?? Resulting in her really being the slayer, but the moment affected by demon. She remembers & accesses that memory which the trio use to manipulate to try & get rid of her by making out to her that she is in fact insane when she currently isnt. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

      WiseWillow It was said that the angel episode "I will Remember You" debunks the whole theory that she was really crazy. Since Angel was the only one with the memory of a day that never happened it wouldn't make sense that something that would be considered a figment in Buffy's mind remember something that buffy doesn't.

    Buffy Wikia discusses all this in great detail;
    buffy.wikia.com/wiki/Asylum_Buffy
    Personally I'm fine with it any way, Sunnydale is real and the Asylum is just an illusion, great. OR Asylum Buffy is real and the last episode of the series represents Buffy regaining her sanity once again after 7 years and going home to Joyce, Hank and all her friends from the Buffy movie, great. OR they're both real in parallel dimensions and Asylum Buffy can live like a normal person again after the last episode because of the events then and the affects it has on Sunnydale Buffy. Any way you cut it, it's a happy ending. Perhaps more interesting is SMG's cameo on her old soap opera All My Children in the final few eps;

    Guess someone forgot to take her meds today? Read a great fanfic on this one where Buffy is zapped by the bad guys and wakes up in bed with her husband, Ford from Lie to Me, pregnant with their third child with Joyce and Hank acting as babysitters. Meanwhile in the Slayer world Asylum Buffy has to adjust to fighting evil with Dawn and the Scoobies constantly having to convince her she isn't suffering a relapse.

    Also at the end, what Joyce says? It’s almost as though it’s what Joyce would say to Buffy in real life during s6 if she could comfort her and tell her she is strong and won’t be feeling depressed forever.

    Normal Again was always my favorite episode, I’m glad you didn’t skip it. I don’t know if you’re going to try Angel one day, but if you do, you can’t skip the episode where Buffy follows faith to L.A. after she found out she slept with Reilly. I loved all of the dialogue between Buffy & faith in that episode. Angel & Buffy’s relationship also change a bit in that episode. There is a lot I would like to mention, but I don’t do spoilers.

    My personal opinion is that this was a special episode designed to create fan-based debate!
    In fact, I think it is not too difficult to understand what the only true "real" world is, and can be understood by many clues:
    1) First, if the world of Sunnydale infested with vampires and demons was imaginary, Buffy would not be fooled by Xander at the end of the second season on Angel!
    2) All that happens in the first crossover with Angel would not have been possible, and I add that the very existence of the TV series on the fascinating vampire is another clue to the choice made by our heroine!
    3) And if it is not enough to remember the enormous amount of hackers, legends, spells and more that are constantly extrapolated from the many books owned by Mr.Giles and not only!
    4) It is not enough yet to say that Buffy had "awakened" in the period of his death smelling "trap" (IT'S A TRAP !!!)
    In short, we can safely wonder what the solution is, even without considering what I just wrote
    SPOILER
    , but the fact that at the end of the season, Buffy himself laughed, thinking back to this thought that he closed this story definitively!

    I really do think both realities are real. Like different dimensions or something.

    • @DaveVampireSlayer
      @DaveVampireSlayer 7 років тому +1

      After Chosen we have canonical comics who no longer mention this story, either or the two realities have come back definitively, or all this was just a trick to make the fans crazy XD

    • @Hawk_of_Battle
      @Hawk_of_Battle 6 років тому +1

      Or Buffy simply never wakes from her comatose state and everything that happens including the comics and all the other spin offs are happening in her head. We never see anything of the "real world" beyond the ending here, but presumably it continues spinning on as normal. Both realities can continue on without being mutually exclusive.
      But yeah probably just supposed to make fans crazy.

    I love this episode, At the time when it aired I thought it should have been the series finale, and still think it could have been a great way to end the show.
    It did the Shutter Island open ended did it / didn't it happen 8 years before Shutter Island,.

    WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST!!! The watch the 7 seasons. THIS IS PSYCHOLOGICALLY SCARIEST THING I've ever seen, until Giles talks about this episode.
    I watched them all like this, as Joss Whedon in his audio commentary to episode 1 (Welcome To The Hellmouth) said the show follows on from the movie in many respects.

    I like how at the beginning of the episode you're acting all happy and then by the end of the episode you're what happened. I mean Dawn character made no sense at all to me she came out of nowhere and wasn't always well written. And why would Buffy's father just disappear and Buffy not know how do contact him. It brought up the age old question in the Buffy fandom was she a superhero or a schizophrenic girl living in her own mind? She was living in that world for a year was it heaven?
