Steve Morse and Andy West are legendary players. In addition to co-founding the Dixie Dregs together in Augusta, Georgia, in 1970, both virtuosos have colorful personal resumes.
Guitar giant Morse’s is more high-profile. He remains the leader of the Steve Morse Band, who opened the Dregs’s late April show at Nashville’s CMA Theater, where this Rundown was filmed, with 45 minutes of smart shred. He’s also been a member of Kansas and Deep Purple, as well as another instrumental powerhouse, Flying Colors.
Besides his tenure in the Dregs, West has recorded with Vinnie Moore, the Steve Morse Band, Paul Barrere, and Henry Kaiser, with whom he’s been a member of the Mistakes, Crazy Backwards Alphabet, and Five Time Surprise, which also includes Messthetics guitarist Anthony Pirog. (Full disclosure: I recorded a version of Steppenwolf’s “The Pusher” with Kaiser and West as part of Kaiser’s Moods & Modes of Halloween video quarterly in 2023.)
The Music City show was classic Dixie Dregs, with more than two hours of high-wire playing, all anchored by the bold melodies that mark their compositions. Joined by longtime Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein, violinist Allen Sloan, and keyboard player Steve Davidowski, the concert was an affirmation of Morse and West’s vitality and musical partnership after sharing stages for more than 50 years.
In the video, Steve and Andy explain their rigs in person and in detail.

I have always dreamed of having the Steve Morse signature guitar. I love seeing this old rocker with his usual ax making good music. I still remember with emotion the message he posted after the recent loss of his wife. Despite everything, he remains in the gap, giving us the best of himself. Thank you Steve and thank you Premier Guitar for these priceless videos.

Saw the show in CT last night. My God he's still kicking ass on all levels. I was expecting him to be slightly rusty with the wrist issues and being slightly beyond spring chicken age, but holy sweet baby Jesus...my friends, this dude does not quit! He played brilliantly as always, and everyone else was insane as well. Van Romaine was particularly off the charts. A true virtuoso on guitar and as a composer. Holy shit what a show!

I absolutely love Steve Morse's playing, but enjoy his gift of composition even more. Many people can play just as well, but few can actually write music that's equal to their guitar technique. The Dixie Dregs were an amazing find when I first heard " Dregs of the earth" This was the first time I heard modern complex instrumental music that wasn't obscure washed out jazz-fusion, and to this day The Dregs are a favourite album band that is listenable to more than just a few elitist jazz intellectuals.

I love this dude! I met him at the Bottom Line here in NYC 44 years ago! Holy fuck I’m old! Steve said he was so busy he didn’t have time for anything even to just relax. In the 80s, my band played the hotel club circuit on the East coast.
One Fri. afternoon at rehearsal, Butch Trucks was in the bar which was closed.
He was the road Mgr for The Dregs when they first toured.
They were opening for Chuck Levell and Sea Level, and Steve walked in the third set, the last song, and while we were playing , he got on stage and played !
The next set , the whole band including Andy, played the whole set.
Very gracious nice guy. He had a military road case and his old tele with 5 pups plus midi, which we knew nothing about !
Amazing pickers and Butch said they were playing hotel gigs like us until a couple of months ago !
Mind blowing to hear them in a 150-seat club !

Steve's rig has changed somewhat. He used to have just a short delay, a long delay, and a synth set to an orchestra patch, all modulated by volume pedals. The more you pushed on them, the longer the delay or the more prominent the synth became. Now Steve has a few other gimcracks like a compressor and that reverb box going.

First time I've seen someone use an amp modeler correctly. Those things are not made to go through a guitar speaker cabinet or a pre-amp. It totally defeats the purpose. In a pinch, you can run a modeler through the "effects return" and hopefully your chosen model is using the same speaker size at least

It must be an old guy thing, because sound guys don't know what to do with bass frequencies at shows. They just crank the lows until you simultaneously can't hear the bass, but also gives you heart palpitations and cracks the ceiling tiles out. I'd love to be able to hear notes. Lows are easy when the volume is up; let's work on being able to hear all the strings, guys.

What a pathetic comment that is…he physically needs assistance with it and is still a phenomenal player. Considering his age as well, he can do whatever he damn well likes

I will not be seeing them this is my favorite band of all time favorite players of all time but I’m just not interested I stop by his solo records after 1990 high tension wires there’s nothing he did after that including deep Purpl that even remotely got my interest sorry. But to see them at 70 year old going around the country and playing a few shows I’m not interested man this is just too much I’d rather this guy sit at home and write classical guitar pieces I’m so sick and tired of his rock ‘n’ roll fantasy BS man this guy has the most potential of any composer out there and he’s being limited to 3 quart rock with some great riffs involved but still it’s just not the Steve M that I remember

Why have I never heard of Dixie Dregs? I guess they’ve been around since 1970.
