Well done ! Always good to go over basics and also pick up new tips along the way. I do it with drums after 60 years.
I love a drivers car and would rather have the car tuned, as you have done, with sanded proper tires. As for magnets ? Only if I have to.. Nothing like coming out of a turn sideways and down the straight, fast and successfully !

I bought a 1:32 track acouple of years ago. I had not raced slotcars since 1970s (no magnets). I Could not figure out why the cars slowed down so fast when I let up on the trigger. I finally thought to take out the magnets in one car and it made all the difference! Better control going into a curve, and faster excelleration leaving.

It's NOT to be questioned ever! Racing is about EXCLUDING PEOPLE so you end up with 1 winner! The race track is designed to exclude 99% of the drivers from winning! this guy is telling you to CONSUME AND DESTROY your investment while HE makes money from HIS investment.

This is how I feel about modern HO slot cars. Bring back the T-Jets! That said, you 1:32 guys with magnets are nowhere near the levels of ridiculous that HO has achieved. I won't even mention 1:24, those guys have had the fun completely sucked out of them. I guess magnets are supposedly trying to replicate downforce because that's difficult to achieve with aerodynamics on such a small model. The one major flaw is that aerodynamic downforce isn't available when the car is stationary of travelling slow.

we made our own track on wooden planks and milled it out with a
milling machine. so nog magnet strips on the track. the strips are made from a cooper tape. it's much more challeging then a scalectrix or carrera track. The selfmade track goos much much faster we don't really move the magnets out or car for the wheight because the speed on that track and the weight keeps the cars in a good ballance it drifts out a little bit depends from car to car. But i suggest you try to get your slot cars on proffesional selfmade track it's 10times more fun

Was a kid in the 70's and had a polistill slot car set with no magnets and it was so much better. The speed was more to scale and you had to drive them. After a while you could just blip the throttle and get the back end to twitch mid corner and knock your opponent off or block them passing 🤣. The racing was slower but so much closer. Can't see the attraction to hyper fast cars that are glued to the track and are just a blurr

Since my track gets dusty very quickly and I can't bother cleaning it regularly, I usually leave the front magnet in place. I agree, it's more fun than driving with both magnets in place. I disagree with the "more challenging" part though. It's a common misconception that cars in general (not only slot cars) were easier to control, when they had more grip. This is only true when you drive them well below their limit. When you are at the edge of what a car can do, the more overall grip you have, the sharper the limit will be, because: a) things happen quicker and you have less time to react and b) the dropoff in grip when you pass the limit is more severe.
In my opinion, this applies to slot cars as well. Without a magnet, when you go past the limit, the car will gently start to slide its backend out, and you have plenty of time to react and to keep the drift under control. With all magnets installed, the margin between you controlling a drift and your car flying through the air and landing 4 meters off track is very slim.
By removing the magnets, you make the cars slower and easier to control. This can be more fun, especially because it leads to better racing since you don't need to stop the race every 5 seconds, when somebodys car has left the track. The driving itself gets less thrilling and less challenging though.

  • @gearhead366
    @gearhead366 3 роки тому

It's not just the slower corner speeds that result in less damage to the cars. When you barely exceed the traction limits of a magnet car, it deslots and hits the wall. When you barely exceed the traction limits of a no-mag car, it slides out a bit, and you keep going. Zero damage, and the racing continues. You get visual feedback as the car approaches the limit. With a magnet car, there is no visual feedback until the car deslots and hits the wall. The sliding causes you to lose time, so you learn to try to keep the car from sliding.

Much better without magnets, the oldest clubs around Britain ban magnets. Nothing quite like leaving the braking till the last split second, getting the tail out and powering back on around the corner to leave the corner at a higher speed with a little fishtailing down the straight.
You actually have to drive the car, and if you don't get it right and get that tail out with the power back on, the car will just roll out at the slower speed.
As for lap times, once you master the corners, won't make much difference. As for losing the weight of the magnet, a little piece of lead in the right place can be rather effective. But you have to make sure the car will still tail out on the corners.

More fun? NO! It's more fun when you let the cars designer actually design the car and YOU DON'T! Buy the cars, drive them around, DON'T LISTEN TO ANY NON-company person, buy more cars, DON'T CHANGE ANY OF THEM! And after 25 years you'll get experience and realise each car is different and THEY DO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING! So, STOP PUTTING OIL on the tyres! STOP LISTENING to gossip! Stop letting the size of the population influence you! These cars are FAMOUS! Don't destroy the fame aspect of your purchase! Don't oil tyres! Don't change the cars! Just drive them and buy more! Drive them! Buy more! Eventually you'll learn what they've built for you and you'll love them even more! A collector buys 3 of each model car they want. 3 cars! Not 1! A professional collector buys 6 cars of the same model! Not 1 car!

Unfortunately, if you race w/o magnets, you HAVE to have to purchase the BORDERS...
Otherwise, the car will pitch out and and drop a tire and CRASH the car.... And the 90 degree corners are horrible IMHO... because it is sooo easy to loose it on that corner.... Funny how the ONLY flat corners that Carrera has in it's Track sets are ALL the sharpest corner track you can get... I wouldn't buy a track set ever again because of it...
I have placed silicone tires on my cars and put weight on them as well (obviously pulled the magnets..) worked great for the 1/32 scale but is HORRIBLE for the 1/24 scale Carrera cars... they are flopin all over the place, and causing some major damage....
Thank you for the video though....

And the perfect mass produced limited editions, get destroyed by the ego maniacs! Remind yourself, you DIDN'T go to any boardroom meetings! You also didn't get any correspondence asking you to ADD YOUR INPUT into the cars design when they are being designed! You're NOT A SLOT CAR DESIGNER! You DON'T stand on their shoulders and reinvent cars! Your cars have NO CREDIBILITY, NO FUTURE INVESTMENT, and you'll spend the rest of your life explaining to people what you've done to the perfect product from the brand. Your car has ZERO FAME AND CREDIBILITY as soon as you modify the item. You MUST therefore STOP USING the old name for the car you changed. Realise that when you BREAK THE SEAL opening the car from the plastic box, you've RUINED the investment for the future at that moment. So, STOP BEING EGO MANIAC consumer destroyers, and be men! Your modified car MAKES NO SENSE and its worth Jack Sh*t! Nothing!
