Wow! Haven't posted for a while... In today's video, I'll be teaching you guys how to create this really awesome looking wavy dots background in After Effects without ANY plugins. It was completely inspired by @mkbhd's style because he uses this background pattern in his intros and some other places. So credits to him. This tutorial is fairly simple and easy to follow, so I really hope you guys enjoy it!

For those who want a white background follow these steps. Follow the instructions as he presented them but add ONLY these simple changes to get a white background with black dots. Let's Begin! At the 0:52 second mark in the video: Begin by choosing Composition in your Menu panel - New Composition, but choose White as your background color. At the 1:30 minute mark in the video: Make a New Composition, but choose White as your background color. At the 2:18 minute mark in the video: Choose black as your fill color. At the 4:50 minute mark in the video: Add a solid, but choose black as the color. At the 7:58 minute mark: In your track matte option choose Alpha Matte "DOT". That's it! Enjoy!
or you can just make the whole thing and invert the colors....

I've a Q, What if i want the background to be black, but the dots to be some other colour, but not white. How do I do that ?

Tip: To make the effect cleaner on the edges, follow the tutorial, but after, make the main comp 8k (7680x4320) (any resolution larger than the desired resolution works, I just used 8k because it's a simple double), then increase the size of the mask (solid with the noise effect) slightly and increase the width and height of the dots tile. Then, create a new comp at your desired resolution and drop the other comp into the center of it. (render the new comp!)

I know this is old but for those of you who want the dots to be a different colour, you have to set the track matte to alpha, and then change the mode to stencil luma.

i want the dots in a colour. but how i can do it?
I have a serious queston, when i make my background white and the dots purple, after applying the luma matte it makes the dots a grey color but it still works. How would I go about fixing this?
Hmmmmm, try and change the alpha modes?
@@arialfx I went through the Alpha modes for the three layers but it didn't seem to change much and was still black, however, when I make the dots layer visible by clicking the eye it does make the dots purple but doesn't have those "gaps" or blank spaces if you know what I mean. at 8:33 of this video > ua-cam.com/video/mm_XKblLeCE/v-deo.html is now my problem lol. also thanks for the fast reply!
Ahhhh hmm. I really wanna help you but this animation is really difficult to explain, and many layers are affected so I can't really help you directly from here :c

Thanks a lot! Well this is actually really complicated, and I'd suggest just making a long version but if you really want to loop it, you could try making the evolution go to 100, then back to 0 and then repeating that so it loops. Join our discord for further support! Thanks.

Could you make a tutorial on something similar? There's this channel called Pocketnow, they've got this blinking/flickering dots background similar to this MKBHD one, here's an example of their background: streamable.com/160pj9
