  • The story of Joaquim Cruz is one of the most inspirational to ever occur. Born into deep poverty in an industrial town in Southern Brazil, Cruz took to the track at very young age and showed amazing results. At just 15, he had already run a 1:51 for the 800 meters, and by 18, he had broken the world junior record, running a time of 1:44.30 seconds. 2 years later, he had great success at the University of Oregon in 1983, winning the 800 meters in dominant fashion. After a stellar showing at the World Championships, the 20-year-old Cruz achieved a bronze medal at his very first international championships, however, just 1 year later in 1984, he would emerge as one of the all-time greats in his event, running some of the most unbelievable races in the history of the 800.

In 1984 he didn’t start running till January and was very slowly getting fit and wasn’t even the best in his country at 1500m, Peter Elliot beat him in a UK meet at crystal palace in June. 2 months later at the Olympics Coe was struggling to regain his 81 form actually by accounts in his book seb Coe coming back said” he used the 4 rounds of the 800m to get fit for his now main event the 1500m, which he retained and is the only man to win back to back 1500m titles at Olympics.Coe is the only man under 1.42 for 800m and 3.30 1500m. Only man to hold 800m, 1500m 1000m and mile WRs all together. He had a long international career from 77 to 1990. Cruz was phenomenal in 1984 just in his purple patch and put together 4 very fast olympic 800m heats semis and final. He was unmatched at the Los Angeles Olympics. I saw him run live on the TV. Cruz had injuries but made the Olympic 800m final in 1988 and came second winning the silver. After this very mixed results. I remember Cruz being much like Rudisha, he just flat-out ran away from everyone. However, to me, Coe is still the best ever middle Distance runner.

Coe is undoubtedly the best 800/1500 runner in history. He got two Olympic golds in his "weakest" event. He's the only person ever to go sub-1:42 and sub-3:30.
Rudisha and Kipketer have gone faster than Coe in the 800m, and Amos has gone as fast. But none of those guys are even remotely close to Coe's 1500/mile times/capacity. At one point he was the only guy to ever go sub-1:42 AND sub-1:43. And he's the only guy who has defended an Olympic gold in the 1500m. El G is obviously a better 1500m/mile -runner, but when it comes to the 800m AND 1500m/mile, Coe simply takes the cake.

Fabulous stuff TRP and great footage most of which I had never seen. Cruz's 800m Olympic victory was the only race I remember watching of the 84 Olympics as a youngster, and needless to say a couple of years later I took up 800m running myself in high school. Cruz's sensational 1984 season was one for the record books and might have had my vote for the GOAT honours if not for King David himself. Thank you for this great and nostalgic content.

I don't know where those figures for the fastest 800m times in 1983 came from, but Cram ran 1.43.61 in Oslo that year. As for the '84 Olympics, Cruz was absolutely on fire that year and would have been very hard to beat for even a super fit Coe. But there's no mention of Coe's injuries leading up to the Olympics here - he was training with 14 and 15 year olds in January of that year after a long illness. It would have been interesting to see how well he would have run had he been fully fit. Also, no mention of Ovett being crippled by asthma - he had to throw himself over the line to qualify for the final because he could barely breathe owing to the smog. Those points aside, Cruz managed to consistently run under 1.43 that year and was the first athlete to do that. He raised the bar again and it was a real shame he didn't get back to his '84 and '85 form after injury.

I was at Portland State University in1984, and Cruz was bigger than football and basketball players. Steve Prefontaine was bigger in Oregon than Michael Jordan. Back then, track and field in the US was still a mainstream event along with boxing.

Fantastic coverage of a memorable race. I must say though, at 5:11 in the vid -- "Against all odds" . . . not necessarily. By the time of that 800m Oly Final, Cruz was a pretty heavy favorite. Coe's 2nd-place finish was somewhat of a surprise to many, due to his missing quite a bit of training and competition throughout '82 and '83.
