The World Record Discrepancy

- In the 1991 World Track & Field Championships, Mike Powell set the still standing long jump world record at 8.95 meters, and what an epic athletic moment it was. For over 30 years now, no athlete has been able to match or surpass this leap, except for one special athlete from Cuba, who in the early summer of 1995, made history.

I can't wait to see someone clear 9 meters. Even if it's wind assisted. Right now the longest jump ever is a wind aided 8.99 from Mike Powell.
Think about all the things that have to go right. Powell was an amazing jumper but not particularly fast or a powerful runner like Carl Lewis. Sprinter over the last 35 years have became increasingly stronger (maybe with or without steroids) but have for the most part abandoned jumps. History shows 29 feet is nearly impossible. Beaman jumped 29’2” at altitude and nearly by mistake with as many fouls he had. I think the next 29 foot jumper will have to be a sub 10 second 100m sprinter with at least 38” plus vertical jump. However the way long jump is promoted and sprinters just sprint now-it will be another 30 years.
Beamon's 29'2" was his first jump in the finals, fouls in the prelim round almost kept him from qualifying.
@@jimclawley7503 I stand by my statement. Everything has to go right. Yes he wasn’t that fast. His best 100m time 10.45. With a time like that most DII track coaches would hope he was good at something else
@@dan1e1473 eh, weight is irrelevant. Greg Rutherford was nearly 200lbs. Bo Jackson was a 6’9” high jumper in high school yet easily the over 200 lbs and Jonathan Edwards could blow away in a stiff wind. If you are strong enough to carry you own load weight doesn’t mean anything.
Long jump approach is 30 to 40m so 100m speed doesn't matter
It's ridiculous that there's only one anemometer at an event, given what's at stake.
It's also ridiculous that no-one asked the official to move.
Look at the weather conditions, you couldn’t see from one end of the runway for the long jump to the pit at the other end; it wouldn’t be surprising if no official could see the guy standing next to the gauge at the time…
@@2themoon863 Except that there are several officials nearby, certainly close enough to have seen the guy standing there.
Besides, there should still be more than one anemometer.
@@ianmacfarlane1241 Sestriere is a small village in the Alps famous for winter skiing.
I am surprised Pedroso was competing in that event
It is ridiculous. Athletes are allowed to use modern technology to get better results, but not nature.
@?? Exactly. As evidently happened here an athlete might be robbed of a chance of greatness...one moment where it all comes together perfectly, wrecked by an idiot standing in exactly the wrong position.
The officials should be sympathetic to the vagaries of the sport - the idiot should have known better.
Here's me assuming that the fog was the obstructed thing in play
I was thinking the same thing too.
What's not mentioned - at all - is that fog was not moving at all! Zero wind. The fog is a perfect barometer for whether the anemometer was interfered with and proves there was no wind.
“This was a monumental leap for the long jump”
See what you did there, TRP! :)
@Café Littéraire ??? How did you come to that conclusion
@Café Littéraire what do you mean by suspended? If you mean banned then Russia was because they were caught running a state-sponsored doping program designed to boost its medal haul at international sporting events. But sure its bias still.🙄
@Café Littéraire cause three Americans are equal to over 1,000 Russians?
@Café Littéraire lmao the biased one here is you. The Russians are doped to high hell and the Chinese in the Olympics are forced to attend and train year round. It’s not a voluntary decision to join.
@Café Littéraire and? Russian teams are fed roids day in day out and the government sponsored it to make themselves seem better. Just accept that you’re wrong dude
YESS YESS YESS FINALLY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO
Wonder how different the histor of the long jump would be if it just measured the distance from takeoff. So many huge foul jumps are now lost to time
I've read that Carl Lewis during his best years has twice jumped past the 9.00m limit: 9.06 and 9.11 - although foul, these jumps were measured from the spot of take-off....
Lewis had one jump at the same track where FloJo’s 10.49 was set, and supposed to be over 9.00 meters - but one spike mark was found in the plasticine used as a foul detector beyond the foul line.
@@2themoon863 was CL on the juice then?
I could be wrong, but it seems having the front end of your foot over the thingy gives you a significant push-off advantage? Kind of like a slam-dunk where the player pushes off the defenders shoulder to get more height.
Not easy to measure in the 80 or 90 but In the last decade we surely do have the technology to measure it digitally in real-time.
The Legendary Cuban Ivan Pedroso. He jump so high it seems like he is walking in the air...
There was a similar problem with the woman's WR in the 100m by Fl-Jo. The faulty wind gauge read 4.5 M/S seconds before the race. Then 0 M/S during the race. Hence a WR that has existed for decades erroneously.
That record needs to be expunged, and not just because of the windage issue.
They juice the best (technically) instead of the most deserving (if there is such a thing). Eventually we'll have to legalise it all and let athlete's pick and choose. It's the only way we can research the effects - good and bad. I'll trust old school/ naturally occurring drugs rather than that nonsense they cook up in a lab and 'legal highs'. Imma see what happens to you first fam.
10.54s!!
Honestly I think it should still be in the record books, but with an asterisk. The official world record should be given to Elaine Thompson.
And she was full of roids.
As a former long jumper in college, I always had my best jumps with a slight foul. And I'm not talking about a few inches, I mean at least a half foot farther than any other jump.
The jumpers curse, your best jumps will always be fouls Jajaja
As a long jumper maybe you can confirm... It's probably because focusing on pacing your strides to coincide with the jump mark probably inhibits you from just running and jumping as far as you can.
@@lexblau6478 it's because the foul piece of board is slightly higher than the run up, essentialy making your foot/calf act use more power because of increased range of motion.
It definitely gives you a push-off advantage.
Probably because your running faster and strides become a few mm father each stride. Ten strides at top speed can get you few cm over take off
I love your documentary narration style

In my mind, this record is more official than FloJo’s 10.49 in the women’s 100m. FloJo’s time has been found to have been almost certainly wind-aided, while this one clearly was not given the same benefit of the doubt. It’s unfortunate when ambiguity enters the sport like this.
Ion know she gapped them by a lot
Nobody wants to disrespect the dead but she was geared to the gills. We have advanced so much in diet and training since the mid-80’s and no one has beaten her WR? As dominated (enhanced) as the Jamaicans have been for the last 20 years and they still haven’t bested it
@@davidhooper259 bro bolt record might last for a 40yrs and what ppl gonna say he cheated too
@@jayjordan7257 Bolt’s records will last fairly long time but not that long. Do a little homework on doping even the Russian state sponsored scandal and you will see that low population countries, especially island countries have an advantage. Since everyone knows someone in a small country they can see WADA at the airport it’s pretty easy to sound the alarm and prepare for an in coming test. Not all proven performance enhancing drugs/hormones are on WADA’s banded list either so it not entirely cheat proof. Besides testosterone(not the designer analogs) leaves the body pretty quickly. So don’t be surprised if years from now someone reveals Bolt was dirty. For years he was known to be a bit lazy despite how gifted he was.
So I never mentioned FloJo’s 10.49 shouldn’t count because of doping. I’m not gonna make any claims about that here. I’m saying her 100m record shouldn’t count because it was wind-aided. I’m not trying to open up a discussion on doping, whether you’re talking about FloJo, Bolt, or anyone else. Also, all those women that FloJo gapped set massive personal bests in that race, since it was wind-aided.
Another superb edition man. Great stuff
he's also Yulimar Rojas' coach
I feel like we can create a calculated metric for jumping that isn't just "This was a legal jump"; if wind and elevation are being used to gain advantages just factor them into the scoring, or say screw all that and throw it into the record book and just highlight the environmental details (wind, elevation, humidity, etc.)
Another lovely analysis. 👍
The script of your videos is great!
"the wind might've helped, that's too random" "kipchoge's run was too controlled" MAKE UP YOUR MINDS, OFFICIALS.
What a unique and informative video!
Ivan Pedroso's 8.96 m is not the only "World Record that technically does not exist". In 1992 the german female long jumper Heike Drechsler jumped a 7.63 m with a tailwind of 2.1 meters. Funfact: Drechsler's competition in 1992 was in Sestriere, too.
Excellent point out.
Yes, the first and only 25 foot jump by a woman. I did witness Jackie Joyner Kersee foul an apparent 25 footer at the 1988 Olympic Trials, though.
Everything Heike Drechsler did athletically needs to be removed from the record books. None of it was "legal".
@@HH-mw4sq really yeah right

Gr8 research! Kinda looks like he was robbed tbh, is it because he's Cuban?
Great video, Ivan is one of the greatest. They said he cleared 9 meters in training a few times.
Otra joya del deporte cubano.
90s Track athlete here... (Jumps) We all knew Ivan was going to be the GOAT for Long Jump. He was the only one that we would have bet to break 9m.
Cuba also produced Javier Sotomayor, the only man to clear 8ft in the High Jump.
Pedroso is my fav long jumper... he's smaller than everyone else yet outperform everyone else, really give smaller jumpers some hope
The story would have been different if he was a US athlete
The footage beginning at 7:13 is not Pedroso jumping at the 1995 Pan American Games but is more likely the 1997 CAC Championships held in San Juan, and where Pedroso won with a windy 8.54m.
Fouls in long/triple jumping really annoy me.
If you jump 9.01m but over-stride by 0.01m, they foul you instead of simply deeming your jump to be 9.00m (which it was).
Also wind readings in the short sprints 2 metres per second is legal but 2.1 metres per second isn’t.
Like baseball’s strike zone; lasers should be used
Really great video thank you and kudos!
I remember this as a teenager in Cuba. The Italians were giving Ferraris as prizes for breaking a record. We were all waiting for Pedroso to bring a Ferrari to Cuba but sadly he "only" got a Mercedes Benz, which compared to Cubans' chances of getting any car in their lives was already a supercar.
Things looking up in the music department: After so many videos with exactly the same techno sound track, it's good to hear the music being mixed a bit. Not a fan of ANYTHING techno, even "ish," but not having the same sound track for every one of your videos is a great improvement. THANK YOU and thanks for the always interesting information.
I wonder if the story would have been same if a Cuban held the record and an American found himself in this kind of situation.
Incredible! thx for it
It just may be legit, but they have to give a lot of consideration to why the individual stood in front of the meter only on his jumps. 3 of the 4 jumps considered legal were made by him and each of his, someone was blocking the wind meter. It even seems suspicious to me and I understand why they questioned it.
to hold a world record you have to be from the U.S.A. ,,, his biggest problem is that he from Cube , if he was from the U.S.A. he would have been famous for having the record . Politics controls sports , plain and simple
😂😂 there are a lot of world records where the holders aren't from the USA
I remember watching Carl Lewis take off well behind the board on a tremendous jump, I mean like almost a foot, I think it would have been over 9m but we’ll never know!
Carl is the greatest long jumper in history. Even that day that Powell broke the LJ WR, Carl jumped 29 feet a bunch of times (i think 4) but they were windaided. Something crazy like that. He was killing it but just couldn't beat Powell that day. But Carl won 4 Olympic Gold medals in the long jump & could have possibly won a 5th one but America boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Russia. I hate politics!
You really need a sport tv show I love ur vds
Would love to see more about great athletes from countries that aren’t widely know to be competitive in the sport
There's a video of Carl Lewis jumping what some say to be 30 feet. Unfortunately the official marked it as a foul despite no one being sure one way or the other.
If only they had HD cameras back then.
He used the rule that didn't actually exist to disqualify Lewis. SMH.
Yeah, but Lewis is a self confessed drug cheat so it doesn't really matter anyway.
Actually it does matter. I worked in sports medicine with elite athletes for over 26 years, and I'm going to tell you something: They ALL will sell their soul in order to win. What that means is, they ALL cheat. At the world class level, you can rest assured that they're cheating. The question is, will any of them get caught? And that includes EVERYbody who's competed in the last 30+ years.
1. I love the content of your videos and genuinely appreciate all your efforts in making them. 2. Is it necessary that you repeat things so much? They're albeit in slightly different wording but it's repetition nonetheless. Consider e.g. just letting the visuals run without audio for a while, this can actually produce a more powerful viewing experience. With respect, DF
I agree! Maybe he just wants to make his videos a bit longer
Longer videos, more money. A ten-minute mark is crucial there.
This is a great video.
In Spanish, Ivan is pronounced "ya-vahn".
Ee van
Yeah van
It's means John, in English
When people jump further then I can trow....
What about Carl Lewis‘s legal jump, where they ruled a foul because the tip of his foot broke the plane of the board. However, the rules don’t say anything about breaking the plane of the board, it’s where your foot is on the board. Wasn’t that jump supposed to be over 30 feet?
Yes.In 1982. There is a video on it that is posted on UA-cam.
One of the most interesting 11 minutes and 20 seconds of my life lately.
Wooow I didn’t know that Pedroso was jumping 9 meter, very sad it was a foul , thx for sharing this information ✊🏼✊🏼
There should be pressure plates installed into the take off boards to see the athletes power output.
I remember Ivan Pedroso jumping beyond 9m in training.
I jumped 6.50m at 16 and sub 2 mins 800m. I was a 1:56 800m runner
I can't help it .... my all-time favorite JUMP, from any one individual, is still Bob Beamon's 8.90m.
I know it's not the official WR...
And I'm aware of the advantage of high altitude.
But in terms of wow moments for long jumpers.... it's difficult to argue.
Plus, it still LOOKS like the greatest leap of all-time. His air time, his height... His unusual style ... all make that jump the best for me.
On top of that, he destroyed the previous WR with that leap. Something that'll never be repeated even if Mike Powell's WR is broken.
I do see some incredibly gifted jumper coming along and finally jumping over 9m ... might be next generation, but someone will eventually break the 9m Mark.
If someone was to achieved what Beamon did, I would be a mark around 9,15 wich is just beyond any dream jump and/or limit a human can achieve 😭❤️
Cuban pride 🇨🇺
If an organization assumes, that someone "might" have blocked the wind-meter (while keeping the meter "unblocked" was anyway this organization´s responsibility towards the athletes), and cannot surely prove that it was the case, then the record must simply count, since the rules are the rules, always. One can afterwards say, that the organization failed the expectations, but still cannot blame Pedroso for anything... So, according to the same rules that this organization set, the record is valid, even if the organization won´t admit it.
Perfect!
In my opinion this is very controversial because the athlete couldnt affect where the officials stand
I got one question though. i saw Carl lewis jumped 9..941m also on August 30th 1991. was that before or after this jump of Bob Powel?
The end of the board is not the line of a fair or foul jump. The last 10-12cm of the board is a piece of clay so it is easily identified if the jumper made a mark in it to tell if the jump is good or not. Watching the slowed jump it's easy to see his toe is easily 5cm past the end of the clay area of the board which means he's at minimum 15cm past the legal jump line. Taking that in to consideration this jump, if it had been absolutely perfect on the board would still have come up short.
I never knew about this. Kudos to Pedroso.
So you’re saying this official literally did in fact “break wind” to “break the win”?
Just standing here, minding my own business, nothing to see... carry on.
It seems difficult to determine- by a mark in the sand-where exactly to measure. Is there a more accurate way to measure the landing spot?
His world record jump is as much foggy as the weather he performed in. So funny 😂
Not really foggy.
It's when the clouds are low in the mountains 😉
1. There are other instances of Italian cheating in Italy in the long jump. See the Giovanni Evangelisti incident, WC in Rome.
2. Regarding the "long foul" -- the board looks like a 20 inch system, a 16 inch board and a 4 or 6 inch plasticine. It looks as though on plant his toes are beyond the plasticine. Being generous and assuming it's a 4 inch, the minimum foul would be 10 cm. If he was over the plasticine, it would be more. So, if people think he jumped 9.03, it's plausible that the actual distance (foul or not) of the jump was around 8.93.
For me this has always been the world record :) I ratify it.
Well, above or below sea level should be equated for statistically.
To Ciclo Rota BH: Regardless of whether or not it was Pedroso’s job to check the wind gauge (Obviously, it wasn’t.) isn’t the point. And you don’t get it. The official wasn’t trying to block the display, he was trying to block wind from getting to the gauge so the actual wind reading wouldn’t show up. And Pedroso would have been the beneficiary of this chicanery. Tell you what. Let’s include the what ifs. Include this jump and we’ll also include the Carl Lewis jump which was ruled a foul and most people dispute that. Most people there called it a clean jump. It was over 30 feet, so Ivan still wouldn’t have the record. He was a good jumper but is still third behind Powell and Lewis by all measures.
There’s a very real possibility that I’m talking rubbish but wouldn’t high altitude negate wind assistance, to a certain degree? The air is less dense at altitude so wouldn’t the wind be (at the same speed) be applying less force on the jumpers body? Be interested to ind out 🤷🏻♂️
The man who obstructed is named on the screen as Luciano Gemello, so it is bizarre that you referred to him as “Lusiano Hemello”. Did you not notice the G?
0:40 why is there loud music in the background of the dude taking?
If the dog didn't stop to take a poop, he would have caught the rabbit.
wouldnt the high altitude actually decrease the impact of the wind or not the case?

One other interesting fact is the fog that existed. Water vapor is lighter than air, not heavier as so many people describe it. This is why we see fogs lift, clouds high in the sky and not at ground level. So, this great jumper not only had the advantage of altitude, he had even thinner air to jump through. Less resistance. What a jump, for sure, under any circumstances! *Does anyone recall Carl Lewis supposedly fouling a jump at altitude that many claim was over 30 feet?
Fog is due to the water vapour condensing to water droplets, so it is actually denser.
@@martinpattison8916 Water vapor (H2O) is composed of one Oxygen atom and two Hydrogen atoms. At 18 atomic units, water vapor is lighter than diatomic Oxygen (32 units) and diatomic Nitrogen (28 units). The more water vapor that displaces the other gases, the less dense that air will become. Ask any pilot: Humidity affects the way an airplane flies because of the change in pressure that accompanies changes in humidity. As the humidity goes up, the air pressure for a given volume of air goes down. This means the wings have fewer air molecules to affect as they are pushed through the airmass (to create lift). Fewer molecules = less lift. But, for a non-aerodynamic long jumper, it simply means jumping through less resistance. Still? A super great jump!!!
@@bradreid6057 I am well aware that water vapour is less dense than air. I was making the point that fog contains water droplets (i.e. liquid). Since fog typically occurs in cooler conditions, the lower temperature may be a more important factor, pV=nRT or p = ρRT.
@@martinpattison8916 Good points. Whatever is the worst for an airplane to take off in, gain lift taking off from a runway, would generally be best for a long jumper. So many competing factors; the dense fog just stuck out visually to me in the video. Great jump!
What's the name of the track at the end?
The long jump is all about the tiny details it would seem.
Not a weather expert, but one thing I do know, when it's misty, there's hardly any wind. It was clearly misty when he was doing that jump, so it couldn't be windy at that moment.
Doubt that's accurate given the consistent wind measurements during the whole tournament.
I just don't understand why long jump is mesured from a fixed line to landing instead of from jumping mark to landing. Designate a jumping area (like 1 meter long) and measure from the jumping footprint to the landing spot, no?
Like some of the others, it is a "skilled" event.
Should a 100 meter race be measured from the time you leave the blocks until you cross the finish line, and not take into account the reaction time to the starter’s gun? Same principle.
@@mr.johnson460 Fair enough :) Nonetheless, high jump has no such limitation and I'd love to see who can jump the longest
what idiot puts the wind detector at torso level without a marking of tape around the ground to avoid the area? You're talking about measurements with human performance and can't put a measurement tool around people without it being inaccurate.
Wouldn't it be obvious if the wind readings from all the jumpers before and after were consistent with each other. What are the chances of anomaly wind speeds for only his jumps?
I ran a 4:27 mile in 7th grade. Even the coach’s jaw dropped. Tiny little white kid, one arm paralyzed. Lol
That has to be the Greatest single season of Long Jump Ever. Maybe Lewis has some similar in 84-88 period when he jumped more
Can you please look into Carl Lewis's 1981 jump where he supposedly jumped over 9,1 meters but the line man made a mistake
That was at the 1982 at the US Olympic Festival in Indianapolis, not 1981.
Hey, did anybody else realize that usain bolts’ 100m record at 1:58 in 0.25x speed on the timer he finished late 9.3’s or early 9.4’s?
I seen that happen for another sprinters video. It is not accurate
Pedroso's 8.96 m mark comes out to 29.39633 roughly 29.4 ft and his illegal 9.03 m comes out to 29.62598 ft a little over 29.5 ft! That's just incredible! Hopefully, soon enough there will be someone who will reach the magical 9.15 m or 30.01969 ft (30 ft) mark.
How can you do this entire report without explaining why that person was allowed to stand in front of the anemometer?
I wonder what is the real longest jump ever i mean adding the centimeters the athletes left in the platform plus the distance of the jump ?
I have never heard of wind (any) while fog was covering an area.
I'd revise the rules to count the jumps that were supposed to be "fouls".
Even if you step over the line, I'd just subtract how much you went over from the actual jump.
Oh you reached 9.00m?, but you stepped over by 10cm, you jumped 8.90m. Simple.
Same thing if you undershoot it. I'm adding that distance to the final measurement.
You'd still need to hit the board when jumping, you shouldn't be able to just jump anywhere you please.
