+Vincent Paterson This is a wonderful biography for kids. I like how it was released the year of his 90th birthday. Did you work personally with people like Audrey Geisel? How involved was she on the project?
+654zns Audrey was delightful. She was so helpful and gave us access to anything we wanted...unlike the cat in the hat in the story. We included her in our decisions and she was very supportive.
Obviously a great deal of effort was put into this film and you guys did a fantastic job. I remember the first time I saw this and being blown away by how it told Geisel's life story. It was the very first time I had learned about his work outside of children's books including his work in advertising and WW2 political cartoons. It was especially delightful how many innuendos were used here, such as Matt Frewer wearing a hat in the opening from "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T" to the secret paintings, taxidermy and commercial toys and merchandise surrounding Geisel's office. I used to watch it repeatedly trying to see some of the stuff in the background and what they were from. This film was the main reason I fell in love with Geisel's work.
I loved making this movie. We all had a great time. Incredible art direction. I think it was a little ahead of its time. It is a little out there. Love reading that it brought joy to so many people. Thanks. Vincent
this video was my childhood @Vincent Paterson. I used to watch the vhs all the time growing up. I think I still have it on the shelf in my mom's basement.
I Loved this movie as a kid. I still have the VHS. I've found this because I wanted to show my kids as I believed this movie was absolutely fantastic. This movie helped to bring the characters of my most loved books to life, and helped to bring more magic to my childhood. I'm sure it will do the same for my children.
This was my absolute favorite movie as a kid! It honestly helped make me the artist I am today. Thank you so much for the time and effort you and the team put into making it. You are right, Its art direction was way ahead of its time, Its still outstanding.
I doubt you'll see this, but can I ask why Matt Frewer sounds so much like Jim Carrey? Was he originally intended for the role, but couldn't make it and Matt just wanted to implement his voice as much as possible for peak quirkiness. Originally I thought that the Jim Carrey voice was a tip of the hat to his previous roles in Dr. Suess, but then I realized that this movie came out a good 6 years before Jim Carrey played the Grinch and a good 14 years before he played Horton. I know this was a stupid comment I was just genuinely interested. 😅
There are two types of people in this world. The people that somehow miraculously stumbled upon this as a kid and those who didn’t. I love being apart of the prior.
Oh my god, I finally found it. As a young child, I watched this for HOURS, especially the Yertle The Turtle song. I loved that song. Thank you for releasing this online. It was a huge part of my childhood.
Just here....reliving my childhood....then realizing how amazing this was for it's time. I was born in '93....this has animation, accurate live action, appropriate live portrayal of animated sources, book recitations, historical facts, adorable musicals, a plus size lead actress who is ambitious, inquisitive and NOT a walking stereotype and they even unlocked the "Robert Williams" bonus! Oh what today's kids are missing out on.....
I was a construction assistant! Kathy Nijimy gave the crew thoughtful presents. It was my first job in the movies. We were at Canyon Country studios and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis where filming True Lies in the sound stage next door. I got to see her, but every time Arnold appeared I was busy carrying a wall! Never saw him. Lol Oh and the breakfast that Craft Services put on was AMAZING!
I remember watching this when I was a young child and watching Hocus Pocus as an adolescent. Somehow, in my late 20’s I realized Kathy Najimy played such a huge role in two parts of my life.
I loved this documentary. My favorite part was seeing and hearing Robin Williams narrate "The Cat in the Hat". He's the ideal choice to narrate a kids book
I think HE should've been chosen to play the Cat in that live-action movie from 2003. As much as i like Mike Myers in the role, i like to think Robin would've made for a PERFECT Cat in The Hat!
When I was younger I found this same video hidden in a Horton hears a who special features, it was one of my favorites when I was little and I’m so happy I found it
This has brought back memories to me because as a little kid I use to always watch this on either my VHS or DVD player and then I simply forgot about it and I lost it and I simply grew away from it, but I always thought about it. Then today I watched The Butter Battle Book on UA-cam and In Search of Dr. Seuss was one of the suggestions and I got so excited because I thought about it all the time and now I finally get to see my memories come to life!
Fun Fact: Before he died Dr. Seuss said these last words "Yes. I'm not going to die tomorrow." He was right; his spirit is kept alive in the hearts and minds of the children who (today and many years to come) read, enjoyed, and will continue to be inspired by his imaginative and mind opening stories. R.I.P Theodore Geisel, and thank you for all the "Thinks" you've inspired and encouraged us to think.
R.I.P. Graham Jarvis (1930-2003) (The Farmer), Kay E. Kuter (1925-2003) (Dr. Seuss) (voice), Eileen Brennan (1932-2013) (The Who-Villian), Robin Williams (1951-2014) (Father) and Andraé Crouch (1942-2015) (Yertle The Turtle).

I grew up watching this and know it's older, but it hurts that people still butcher his name to this day. Despite that, this was so fantastic and educational, and I'm glad I can show it to my nieces and nephews.
This is the happiest I’ve been in so long!!! My mom bought this in a shop on the army base we lived when I was just a little girl. We moved a lot so I didn’t really have any friends, I watched this everyday on repeat and watching it right now brings instant comfort
I watched this as a child on a DVD of a cat in the hat puppet show... Now I can't stop crying.. I've thought of this often, and can't believe it... I've found it :)
Believe it or not this was the first documentary I’ve ever watched at just age 5, and also my first time learning about not just Dr. Seuss the author’s life but also my first education about the horrors of World War II, the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. Yes, it’s way more unsettling as an adult but this documentary ingeniously incorporated the education of it all in a way that’s not too much nightmare-fuel for the little kids who are curious to watch this thing. But seriously, I love the hell out of this documentary. It translates the world of Dr. Seuss into live-action and feature-length film MILES above ANY of the movie adaptations that came after, everyone’s acting was spot on and exactly in spirit of the original books, it tells an original story in spite of it being a documentary, the songs just slap, the abridged versions of the animated Seuss specials are a joy to see and it’s inspirational for any artist or storyteller to see just what Dr. Seuss went through in his life to be so successful and beloved, and that they can achieve that too. I think the only Seuss work that comes this close in spirit is Seussical, but nonetheless, that and In Search of Dr. Seuss are ultimately the definitive pinnacles of celebrating the life of arguably the greatest children’s author who ever lived.
This was the best video ever to really show the inside of T.S.G and his wonderful stories. And getting a true understanding why and how he wrote them, as well as the History behind the stories. All teachers should watch this before they teach about Dr. Suess. Or Read across America. LOVE LOVE!!!
I used to watch this movie all the time when I was a kid. It was my favorite from that Horton hears a who dvd. I would watch it over and over again. Props to the cast and crew that brought the world of dr Seuss to life. 😊👍
It was perfect, but He did it quite consciously, He wanted to give children a look of highs and downs of the life cause He had been trough that already, and that the life is still awesome despite that. I think he didn't know he was going to die but he wrote that older and looking back to all he passed trough. (sorry the English)
there were two unfinished books that he wrote before he died. Daisy head Maisy and hooray for Diffendoofer day. though they were not published until after this special aired.
I’ll never forgive my mom for making us throw out all our vhs tapes when we moved one time, the movie included. Whenever someone asks me my favorite movie I forget this one and just say I have a bunch, but this one is really my absolute favorite.
I think about this movie all the time it informed so much of my childhood!! The messages are so deep and they are all articulated and performed/animated so well 💚
I don't know what possessed me to buy this at Seuss Landing at Universal Islands of Adventure...but I'm glad I did. It's a very thorough little documentary with a unique approach, and I LOVE Matt Frewer's Cat In The Hat. (And the recital of "How Did It Get So Late So Soon?" at the end is really poignant. I always wondered if the sadness we see there is coming from Matt-As-Cat...or Matt-As-Matt.)
I agree but, honestly, that movie was DOA. Mike Myers could only do so much with a bad script and I think that, while Robin would have been a lot more enjoyable to watch, the movie still would have been a flop.
@@roberttreacy8271 Absolutely! Robin had the energy and charisma that would have been perfect for the Cat in the Hat. But, like I said, a great actor can take a bad script only so far. ***** So true, and I think it does hold up well. Not only is it entertaining, but it also educational about the life of Dr. Seuss. I think the facts went over my head as a kid, but it does give me something as an adult.

I was extremely OBSESSED with Dr.Seuss stuff when I was little. I read most of the books, owned some of the merchandise, I even got a kick out the movie adaptations. But I ended up moving on to Star Wars, and Doctor who. And looking back at the film adaptations of the books, they're not the best, but they're nthe worst either(except for Mike Myer's Cat In the hat, that one was the worst). It's so refreshing to look back at my favorite childhood memories
I remember how obsessed my sister and I were with this movie as kids!! I watched it so many times in the backseat of the car, on the car DVD player ❤️ now I know why I’ve grown up to be obsessed with documentaries :)
I was looking for this movie for so long. I have a really bad vhs of it that I recorded back in the day and was hoping for someone to upload it. Thank you so much for letting me re-live a wonderful memory of my childhood.
I bought a Horton Hears A Who! disc 5 years ago, and I found this movie in the bonus features. Unfortunately, the disc got caught in a fire. I'm 13 now and have been looking for this film ever since! And at last I found it! :D
@@DerPlaguedPiperso, I vividly remember it because I was in second grade and earlier that month was the first I saw "Halloween Is Grinch Night" and then the Saturday before the premiere of this they aired a marathon of all of the Seuss books that had been produced as cartoons. My mom taped them all for me and we tried to record this but we ran out of the 6 hour tape right before the movie ends. It wasn't until I found this posted years ago that I had watched the end some many years later. Other kids were "Disney Kids" I was Seuss with a side of "Peanuts"
I ow a lot to Dr. Suess. Thanks to his books it is the reason why I draw to this day. And writing about there adventure. So thank you Dr. Suess. And I can not wait to see Green eggs and ham season 2.
I love watching this it brings me back to my childhood memories and when I first saw this in 1st grade. My first grade teacher still loves Dr. Sues and still loves collecting dr. Suess books.
I didn't understand a lot of the ideas presented in this when I first saw it as a child. But as a 30-year-old now, WHEW, did Dr. Seuss hit the injustices hard! (Plus, being of German heritage, I think he wanted to be sure NO ONE thought of him as even having an inkling of support for fascism in WWII.)
I've been trying to find this movie for such a long time, the I found it and I couldn't find the full movie!!!!Thank you soooo much for putting this up!!!!!
Yes, I had the dvd and a friend lost it, then I had to buy again but it came not working, and the third thank God it's okay, I did a million of security copies, and youtube too. Enjoy!!! ;)
i remember i saw the very end of this [ the oh the places you'll go number] on an old vhs tape years ago. and always wondered what this was then a year ago found it but every single time it gets taken off youtube so happy to find this again i always enjoyed this.
Jesus I'm 18 now and watching this 2021 I was 2009 and was 7ish when I got this on a Horton hears a who (+3 other something melodies cartoons) like holy shit I feel old
I directed and choreographed this. Wonderful to see it on here to be shared. Incredible cast.

Me too. :P
Given that the other one is well.... not to be spoken of (how could you mike Myers) yes
well, considering its competition... that isn't too much of a feat lol. in all seriousness though this is a pretty solid movie
Mike Myers was all right, but his role in Cat in the Hat was a bit sub par.
Its not like it had competition anyway

To me, Dr Seuss was like a real life Willy Wonka. Their potential was only limited by their imagination (wether it was candy or literature).
Has anyone else noticed that, in a weird sort of way, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" was quite appropriate for Dr. Seuss' last book?

And looking back at the film adaptations of the books, they're not the best, but they're nthe worst either(except for Mike Myer's Cat In the hat, that one was the worst). It's so refreshing to look back at my favorite childhood memories
This song popped up randomly in my head. I had this on dvd and when I was little I used to watch this everyday. Omg the tears 😭❤️
I remember watching this as a kid it nice to see it again
I remember how obsessed my sister and I were with this movie as kids!! I watched it so many times in the backseat of the car, on the car DVD player ❤️ now I know why I’ve grown up to be obsessed with documentaries :)
I absolutely loved watching this as a child and it's great to share this with my child. ❤️
I watched this thing ALL THE TIME.
That's like the exact same thing that happened to me :o; except my I just sold the DVD
Out of curiosity, what started the fire? Also, was it on purpose or accident?
+Bobby Kambert You Can Even Think About The Old Version In 1970, And That's Horton Hears A Who, Even Made By Chuck Jones!
My disc doesn't even play it anymore xD. I only got to see it once and then magically it was forever lost
Bobby Lambert I saw this on that same disc!!
In this day and age it is clear some people were'nt raised with doctor seuss
My dad bought me some of his books made movie ...shame he has been canceled no respect for the dead
I never knew what this movie was called but it always remembered it when I saw Kathy najimy im so glad I found it
I had this video on dvd and I thought it was the best
I had this on vhs as a kid and loved every minute of it. It always inspired me to use my imagination and look at things differently.
Brings back so many memories
Dr Seuss
1904-1991
He must have been very proud of these people making this movie.
I like this movie, it makes me think about my Dr. seuss books such The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax.
We miss you so much, Robin. Rest in peace forever. 💔
Still one of my favorite movies. I have it on VHS and DVD! I try to watch it every year on his birthday!
Only because I watched it air for the first time live, Sunday, November 6th, 1996 on TNT.
Aired a week before my 8th birthday.
November 6, 1994
You mean on the same channel where the Butter Battle Book film aired a few years before this one?
@@DerPlaguedPiperso, I vividly remember it because I was in second grade and earlier that month was the first I saw "Halloween Is Grinch Night" and then the Saturday before the premiere of this they aired a marathon of all of the Seuss books that had been produced as cartoons.
My mom taped them all for me and we tried to record this but we ran out of the 6 hour tape right before the movie ends. It wasn't until I found this posted years ago that I had watched the end some many years later.
Other kids were "Disney Kids"
I was Seuss with a side of "Peanuts"
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing will get better…it’s not”.
I bought a vhs copy of this at universal Orlando. Watched it so much.
this is my favorite film My parents are old so we had it on vhs when i was a kid and now i get to see it being shared. Thank you.
I ow a lot to Dr. Suess. Thanks to his books it is the reason why I draw to this day. And writing about there adventure. So thank you Dr. Suess. And I can not wait to see Green eggs and ham season 2.
Dav Pilkey should take over Seuss' legacy due to their similarities
51:23 Robin Williams - and one of the two girls is his daughter Zelda :)
Oh wow, I haven’t seen this in ages!
I love watching this it brings me back to my childhood memories and when I first saw this in 1st grade. My first grade teacher still loves Dr. Sues and still loves collecting dr. Suess books.
He is forever in our hearts, his lessons are for all ages and times.
I used to watch this all the time as a kid. Will be showing it to my kids in the future! Greatest!!
I watched this so many times when I was younger
This was one of my fave movies as a child. I had it on VHS and i watched this over and over. Still love it now. Brings bac my childhood. :D
This is my fav documentary of all time but no one ik thinks so

I love this movie. I actually watched it tonight because Billy Crystal in it but I loved it just as much anyway. Not my first time seeing it
The world would be a better place if everyone read and thought like Dr. Seuss every day!
I can't believe I found this movie; it's a very lost VHS that needs to be seen.
