    Greetings from the Philippines!
I was still working in Wellington, New Zealand when I watched the audition of Only Boys Aloud at Britain's Got Talent on TV. I instantly got hooked to this all male choir from the Valley so I searched them at UA-cam. I learned about the Only Men Aloud too which definitely was my favorite to win at the Last Choir Standing.
Since I became a fan, I watched all the episodes of the All Boys Aloud documentary. Now that I am back in the Philippines from my early retirement as a nurse in NZ, I still listen to these Welsh choir which of course would make me teary eyed remembering my days in NZ. I used to work in an aged care facility and I play their songs to my residents who are Welsh by origin. They loved it because of relatability just like Scots loving Loch Lomond and Irish loving Danny Boy.
Needless to say, I will keep listening to these Welsh choirs over and over again. I'm a fan.

I cannot listen to this without tearing up and I can hardly breathe my chest swells so … just amazing guys. It makes me so proud of my Welsh heritage … my GGG Grandfather Morgan Michael (1783 - 1864) lived in Quarter Coch, Grennnig Road, Glanamman … his son John M. Michael and his wife Margaret Reece emigrated from there to the USA in 1832 to a Welsh community in north central PA. My mother used to take us to a church on Welsh Hill outside of South Gibson, PA to listen to hymns sung in Welsh/Gallic back in the 1940s. I listen to the "UK's Got Talent" audition version of this many evenings to end my day on an emotional high! THANK YOU!!!

    I’d not ask a life that’s easy,
Gold and pearls so little mean,
Rather seek a heart that’s joyful,
Heart that’s honest, heart that’s clean.
(Chorus)Heart that’s clean and filled with virtue,
Fairer far than lilies white,Only pure hearts praise God truly,
Praise him all the day and night.

The level of ensemble achieved by the men at the beginning of this, particularly when they're all in unison is spine-tinglingly exciting. A rarity to hear. Well done gentlemen. Keep making music.

    • @KenWAnderson
      @KenWAnderson 7 років тому +2

When I come back to this recording I confirm my assessment that the first 2' 30" is probably the best ensemble singing OMA achieved. I don't think they've kept up this standard since then. Come back to that level of ensemble excellent gentlemen.

@@KenWAnderson I’ve been watching and listening for 5-6 years now. It’s different smaller, and I miss Ben Smith’s voice but it seems more a matter of different music. They did many of the songs that lends themselves to great arrangements early. I do hope they someday re-record Aberystwyth though. I’d pay an album price for that song alone, sung in a classic-Tim arrangement!!

music at Christmas to their families. To the OBA & their direct
Or I can't tell you how beautiful you
Sang! I could see in your handsome faces the love you have
For what you are doing. Each of you have a gift, I see a wonderful

Each time I'm listening to this piece I sure lost 100 g of water (and not by perspiration or urinating !)
I remember very well the British Got Talent's presentation.
I was thinking : these boys could have turn very badly in their life, due to the economie crisis in their area. The poverty of their parents, the violence they can live in school etc...
And because someone did believe in their abilities, they simply concentrate all this anger into a angelic choir !
I also remember how Timothy Rhys-Evans (their teacher), was so so proud of them, how he was so so confident they will succeed to impress the judges even if the group of this boys was stressed. I remember the beginning of this song, with the 2 solos... no false note, no shaky voice !
Then, the music, with this crescendo associated with this choregraphy when the group integrated the 2 solos to make one and only one group....
Wouah... this union gave me goosebumps ! How great humans can be when they work together for a bigger goal than their little personal life.
That why I alway cry when hearing this song, sang by these boys !

I grew up with this song. I never knew it would become so famous but I am told that. Years ago during the so-called dirty thirties of the depression the unemployed miners of South Wales used to come to London AND SING THIS SONG AND OTHER WELSH HYMNS AND PASS THE HAT as they walked en masse down the middle of the streets to get a little money. That must have been a good sight for the London Welsh in those days.

That was how Paul Robeson met his first Welshmen. He asked them who they were, and why they were there. He asked them, How were the going to get back to Wales, they replied, the same way that they got to London, walking.Mr Robson hired a train, stacked it with provisions and the miners went home via rail. It was love at first sight for all concerned.

My Welsh father, the oldest child in the family, at the age of 14, moved from South Wales to London, England, on an apprenticeship during the early 1930s. He could see 'the writing on the wall'. The family were very poor in Wales as his father had become ill. Both my grandfathers were miners. Dad gave his first pay-packet to his mother who wept on receiving it. Thanks for that information. From Australia.

    I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.
A pure heart full of goodness
Is fairer than the pretty lily,
None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and sing in the night.
If I wished for worldly wealth,
    It would swiftly go to seed;
The riches of a virtuous, pure heart
    Will bear eternal profit.
    (Chorus)
    Evening and morning, my wish
Rising to heaven on the wing of song
For God, for the sake of my Saviour,
To give me a pure heart.
    (Chorus)

Sometimes the voice of a singer of another sex is a beautiful variety or addition to the theme, unfortunately, I find that very disappointing here, she fills in my opinion little and sometimes even not even above ... I am the agree with previous comments that OBA does not need it and can suffice with its own singers ..
