What do you mean at the end when you say “adjust accordingly”. Do you mean to add more coolant or is there something to physically adjust? Thanks and great videos!

Good video but you trivialize the reinstall of the water pipe. It's a nightmare job. The public should know this before starting.

This was awesome!!! I noticed a pretty serious leak on my daughter's Mini this morning. I was praying it wasn't the head gasket. I started doing some research and found this video and other indications to check the cross tube. I went back under the car after re-filling the expansion tank and could clearly see the fluid was leading from the pipe. I put my hand in there and could tell there wasn't any liquid above it. Moved the pipe around with my hand and the leak increased.....dead give away. Followed your video and removed the plastic pipe.....it was broken right in the same area as yours.....fantastic. Thanx, so much for your assistance. You really made my day!!!!! Cheers.

As always, thanks for these videos!
One suggestion for viewers, at 13:10 instead of pulling back and forth on the thermostat, if you instead repeatedly twist it side to side with both hands (like a steering wheel) it will allow the thermostat to be removed from the water pipe without breaking and will leave the water pipe connection to the water pump intact.

Going back together was a nightmare for me. I ended up taking off the intake manifold just to be able to connect the thermostat housing to the cross-over pipe outside of the car and then sneak it in. With the intake manifold off, you could clearly see the waterpump side and gives you a lot of room to work with. It's more work but made it easier.

Great video, especially the borescope. Couldn’t have done it without that. I had trouble with the pipe as well. Mine was not leaking, so in hindsight, I maybe shouldn’t have changed it. I broke it trying to get it out so in that respect I had to. In the end it took a special vice grip on the pump end to get it unstuck. I’m happy it’s complete, and saved a bunch of money.

Yes it is! I just did this today and once I removed the intake manifold, I had a clear view of the water pump and access to the pipe. That was important as part of the pipe had broken off and stayed in the water pump. Removing that broken ring was then easy.

NEVER replace coolant hose spring clamps with a worm gear clamp like you suggested. 1) those springs do not age or degrade or take a set, it's spring steel and not subjected to cyclic fatigue stresses. They don't wear out, the rubber hose does. 2) I've seen WAY too many times where a worm gear hose clamp was overtightened and cut into the hose. 3) spring clamps always maintain the same clamping force on the hose as the rubber expands and contracts with heat cycles. As the rubber ages and hardens, that spring clamp still maintains the same clamping force. 4) Worm gear clamps almost always get overtightened, and when the rubber expands from heat, that worm gear clamp doesn't, and it can severely degrade and cut into the hose even further. About the only advantage a worm gear clamp has going for it is that they can accommodate several different hose sizes, whereas the spring clamp has to be properly sized for the hose it's on. But that isn't a problem, because they (see number 1) NEVER wear out or get weak.

Does anyone know if the crossover pipe should be oriented the same way on a base model mini? I’m a 2007 but no turbo, super, anything like that. Dual overhead cam and everything-just replaced my thermostat and water pipe but it still seems to be leaking, and when we took the old one out it seemed to have been installed at a different angle than this video shows. I’m wondering if that might be why it’s still leaking

I've been struggling for so many hours to get a new friggin pipe in. 😭Have ended up breaking the small plastic parts which the clip sits in on the new pipe. Wondering if I could live without the clip as once the thermostat is fitted it's not like the pipe can go any where?
Have ordered a decent German brand pipe, if that doesn't go on I'll try reusing the o'ring as you suggested. What a crap design this is. 👍

No Brent, I've been doing da same. Thanks for posting A1, I'll look you up for parts👍.
Brent, I initially had NO PROBLEM wit da pipe leaking til I removed dat dang clip on da forward end to replace da thermostat housing. Da dang pipe came outta da water pump instead of da thermostat pipe at da clip.
I've jes received a new pipe today and wanted to see if anyone other than a $500 per r/r shop has ever sucessfully removed and replaced it witout having a $500 repair bill. Da transmission linkage is in da way on my '09 base Coop. Imma "give it a go" again.

Definitely didn’t reach your hand in and pull the broken parts out and also def didn’t use your hand to clean the area. This is a fairly simple job, just lots of steps. If you’re replacing the thermostat housing, you might as well replace this pipe as it’s known to leak/crack or be broken. It’s cheap enough and with a 20.00$ 1080p cam from Amazon, your life will be easier. There is also a metal replacement available so you don’t have to bother with this ever again.

A1's pipe came outta da water pump, (like mine did when I was replacing da thermostat housing).
So, anytime you are replacing da thermostat housing, it is nearly impossible to separate da thermo housing from da water pump pipe witout da pump pipe breaking and coming outta da pump.
Dere should be a design upgrade here.
Design a connection and clip at da thermostat housing curved pipe end, where technicians, (us) can access witout pulling da pipe outta da pump.
However, I know now as I speak, dis is da whole plan to sell more parts. Ok, dats kool too. Then sell as a package, thermostat housing and water pump pipe TOGETHER. You can't install da housing witout RIPPING DA PIPE OUTTA DA PUMP.

I agree. The design of the pipe and housing is probably the worst user friendly design on the planet Earth. the tolerances and rigidity of the setup is a nightmare. No access and line of sight. A redesigned housing with shorter stub for the pipe connection and a longer pipe is a simple fix. Moreover the whole plastic use is absurd.. Should be a nice rubber hose with a permanent adaptor at the water pump

This design is a pies of shit design.. i am having now on my own car replacing the thermostat and it would not come lose !! so when pulling hard i heard splash of cooland on the other side of the engine and yes the pipe broke at the waterpump side. But my Peugeot 508 has a addition connection on this pipe almost impossible to remove the dam thing. Orderd a new pipe and hose that goes below through the subframe underneat where no tools can come. And yes i also needed to take the intake not off but loose.
i had many cars but PSA engines or Peugeot en generall suck really really bad. For the simplest thing you need to remove also half the engine and having al the room in the engine bay to locate things better.
i loved my E46 and E90 even F11 6 cilinder engine BMW they where superb in design and know where things need to be placed.
i sad to my wife next time we only get a BMW.

This car is plastic junk lol I'm working on one and it sucks all the surrounding parts are brittle plastic and you have to be careful or it will cost you hundreds.
