    This was wonderful. Love the info on the DAP. Like you, I use the instant cure resin for most things but if you are doing a larger body of water, such as a pond, there is a product I used when my husband and I were doing a model railroad layout, called Magic Water by Unreal Details. It is a little hard to find but I did see some listed on eBay and they may carry it where other model supplies are sold. I had experienced so many failures before finding this stuff. After 9 years now as a waterfall and river on our model layout, and not being maintained under ideal conditions, the “water” is still crystal clear with no cracking, yellowing or other signs of aging. No other model water product has ever performed so well for us. For other mini projects, I also love the resin from Little Windows. I have never had a failure with that and their website and the owner of the company are fabulous.

    The fountain came out fabulous! Black washing it first made a big difference. UV resin is great for creating the water splashing from tier to tier. Run a bead of UV resin along the DAP silicone drip and texture the bottom a bit before curing with a light.

    This was incredible Ara. I love how the resin didn't work out for you on the Kraken project, but you didn't give up. And you also filed that fail video, encouraged others not to give up, then followed up on your own advise. Good for you. And the fountain looks great! Especially when you put it up next to the house.

    Old resin will have a yellow color and never totally set up
    And stay sticky 😜 found this out myself in a bathroom scene I made years ago and now have to get a new tub for that project 😒 but live and learn I guess 👍
    luckily the tub wasn't that expensive👍
    Happy to see you got over your fear of resin cause your fountain turned out great 👍😀 That Dap stuff is cool and the fact that it blows would make for a cool cave project 👍

  • @joannecarroll5504
    @joannecarroll5504 5 років тому

    Great work Ara. That caulking product looks a good idea for filling space frugally, before adding expensive resin, too. I'd only seen acetate or bits of polythene used for water drips previously & yes, you do wait for the resin to thicken & scoop it up onto the strips (or alternatively build up dripped layers of UV resin). I agree that caulking guns can be awkward for small hands, but you don't normally force caulk into such thin streams or through a needle hole. Normally you take off the nozzle & there's usually a little 'nub' on top of the tube. You slice the end off of that little nub which leaves a larger hole, then pop your nozzle onto the nub & trim its tip to the desired stream size. Hope this helps, best wishes :)

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 років тому

      Yes it can definitely be used that way. Its around $7 for the whole tube which should last a while if its capped off well. As opposed to resin which can be way more expensive! I have never used a caulking gun for its correct purpose before so that makes sense lol

    I have a couple of tips, maybe they will help. When mixing the resin use a digital scale. Put your cup on the scale set to zero add one part of the resin, set scale to zero again add equal amount of the second resin. This way you get exact amounts and only use one container. For water drops on cascading bits use a clue gun.
    By the way you did an amazing job on the fountain.

    Beautifully done, as always. I'd never seen the three part mixing before, most resin users on youtube seem to pour both parts into a clean cup once they've finished the first mix and mixing again that way. Love the moss, and raven... I might have been tempted to put a frog or some frogspawn/tadpoles into the fountain - but I guess you could make some tadpoles to go in a jar for Wednesday and Pugsley anyway. Well done for facing your fear as well - 10/10 x

    I love how it turned out! I use two part resin a lot. The hint to mix very well depending me the brand. A while back I made a mini fairy garden with a pot spilling water out of it and it had a stream going into a pond. What I did was I cut up a strip from a clear bag (like a zip lock bag) and I glued it to the top and end point. Then I mixed my resin used half of it to the pond and layered the clear strip but I let the other half sit for about 1-2 hours (depending on the resin) to the point were it was workable but thick. Then I poured the rest on the plastic strip again. Then I took a toothpick and at the bottom I stuck it in the resin then pulled it out making wave type effects. I usually like two part resin more because for some reason my I’ve resin always leaves a sticky layer on top? And I can never figured out why. I’ve tried literally everything to help but nothing works. Sorry for the novel but I love working with resin. If you ever need to know good decently priced resin (both if and two part) just let me know!

Make two small holes in the dab casing oppesit from eachother, and let the noncured resin use out of one hole into a bucket! Then fill it with new better resin or maybe leave it empty?

This is a good opportunity to get my resin and goldfish on clear film out...they look really amazing online so hopefully they will look good in the pond I want to make. I just need to figure out how to make clay rocks for the surround...I could texture it with some crumpled foil or paper I suppose! I will tag you when I do it. I have no clue if Dap is available in the UK but unless I make a little waterfall bit (I am thinking that's reaching a bit for my skill level lol) I don't know if I will need anything else except the resin. It's good to know though you never know what ideas will possess me next so I keep all these nuggets of crafty know how!

      I think you could also use a very clear hot glue for the same purpose. Some countries have better hot glue than others. I couldn't find any that was very clear so I had to go with the dap. Have fun creating!!

    I have dreamed of building a lush Hawaiian waterfall diorama for as long as I can remember. But my fear of the water (resin) was paralyzing! Watching this video has eased that fear enough that I may actually be able to follow through with that dream now.

    Did the DAP have a flat back once you took it off your baking sheet?

    • @BentleyHouseMinis

      Yes it did have just a very slight flat back but when I dripped the uv resin all over it that took care of that. :)

    Haven't watched the failed project being done (well, yet anyway ;-) ) but this time seems to have worked very well. Well done! :-D I think I have to watch the Addams Family miniature build now. I have no real association with the family other than watching sporadic animated show and the first movie (yes, I know about the older show and all that) but it could be interesting to see how the miniature house.

    Totally love your fountain and the opening drama, too! Have you ever tried using a glue gun to help create the dripping water? The hot glue works extremely well. There are some great diorama videos that show you how to create realistic water effects. Looking forward to your next video creation!

      Thank you Chellie! I have seen people use hot glue... but the hot glue that I have just isn't clear enough for the effect that I wanted. I do know there is clearer hot glue out there... I just don't have any at the moment. If you know of a good brand I would love to hear 💖

    The reason your resin didn't stick to the water rivulets you made is because it is silicone based. Resin won't stick to it even when thicker and would have peeled off the silicone if you had waited until it was thick. xx
